I got French garlic last year from Wilko and it grew really well from planting in cold greenhouse and then planted out on allotment. Quite a few allotmenteers use supermarket garlic without problems especially in these financially hard times. X
I put extra onions and garlic around the edges of beds so the scent deters pests, they have space to grow and generally it’s unused space between brassicas.
Hi Eli Reference hot bin I bought one for my birthday back in July. it’s 3 months already so yesterday we emptied a small amount out, it doesn’t look quite like yours though! Yours looks so dark with no bits in? Mine has egg shells the compost is dark and light , it stank a bit too, I have been layering it, perhaps not enough? Today I see the bin is no where near the green dial so not getting hot, is this usual after getting the bottom panel front section area of compost out only Compost seems a bit wet, obviously not enough browns in it as you explained on previous video with robin
Hi, I live in Scotland too and have only recently discovered a love for gardening and stumbled across your channel, I just want to say thank you - it is so helpful and enjoyable.
I think I would use sandy soil for garlic in your area. There are 2 good reasons I love my sandy soil-no slugs and no chance of rotting. This year I ordered a variety pack and think they are all hardneck. If they don’t keep well I will dehydrate most and maybe some diced. I can then powder the dry batch. Good thing it’s nice out when we harvest so we can dehydrate outside☺️ I hope I didn’t plant too soon as we are having Indian summer after a week of freezing and I noticed a couple were up already. I threw some old hay we had on them in hopes no more pop up. Some varieties were starting to sprout when they arrived and I only planted a couple inches deep. Oh well, I’m sure I will end up with enough to replant next year so I don’t have to buy them again as they are expensive.
Great video! Might've ordered too many cloves so we'll be using any spare pots/troughs. Your netting looks clever, is that MDPE pipe? What fittings did you use to connect them to the frame? Appreciate your advice. Did your garlic grow better last year? x
Hey Andrew The elephant garlic (which I really hope it does turn out to be) isn’t in the planters. That was all the other types. The elephant garlic is in taller and wider pots. Will just have to wait and see 😀
@@eliandkate thanks for that Eli I hope you don't mind me asking it's just that I have onion rot in my soil and tend to sow onions and garlic in pots generally 30lts pots with 3 maybe 4 to a pot. Maybe ill reduce the size. Thanks again
I do put my coffee grounds into my compost but I’m not sure about using them as a mulch, ie spreading them in a thick layer over the beds and pots. I’ve heard of folk adding it to their mulch?
I’ve gotten 1/2 the garlic in the ground and then the weather warmed up with lots of rain. Last year nothing survived. This autumn I’m determined to plant too much so something survives to harvest. My first year I pulled so much you could smell it on harvest days 2 homes away. 😂
Our garden club had a garlic expert as our speaker at our last meeting. He said if you're growing in a pot, he recommends a deeper one (12-18 inches). We had a ton of rain last year as well, and my garlic did well in raised beds, I think because they're raised off the ground so the drainage is excellent. He plants as late as possible to avoid getting any green showing before winter as frost damage on the plant will seriously reduce production. In a year where a very cold or wet year is expected, he plants in early spring instead of late fall. (We're in Vancouver BC Canada; lots of winter rain; it doesn't usually snow, but we sometimes get a freeze and a little snow that lasts a week). And he says any small cloves he doesn't plant, he uses for cooking.
Perfect Candace, exactly what I was talking about around the knowing and understanding your garden, your climate and not just copying someone else. We can learn so much with the amazing info we can now access on the internet but we need to take that info and understand how it relates to us 😍😍😍
Last year rather than throwing the small cloves away I planted them all in a pot and cut the green leaves as they grew, great in salads and we had several pickings. Michael in Arbroath
Did you actually split/plant the elephant garlic? Reason for the query is twofold. Elephant garlic needs about 12 inches between cloves (so 'they' say) .... and grows taller than normal garlic, so am wondering if those will be issues for growing in pots.
Yeah so if it turns out to properly be elephant garlic then it will be SO MUCH bigger But I only had the two so that has gone in a pot on their own so plenty of space… we shall see
I think I've got 10 cloves of elephant, and 2 bulbs of normal to get in yet. Am swithering between a low raised bed, a high raised bed, and 30ltr buckets .... or may be a combination of all of them. I just know I need to pull the finger out and get them planted or they'll still be sitting come Springtime lol.
I'm hoping to try growing some garlic next year. Would they be ok in pots in -20C and under about a foot or two of snow or should I put hoops with frost covers over them for winter?
I guess what you have to think about is how much the soil/compost. (And garlic) is likely to freeze. I’ve read that garlic will withstand temperatures down to minus 30c and garlic does need a few months of the cold winter to help it develops properly. But…. This is all thinking about having it in the ground. Pots is something different to think about because there is less protection there. I would definitely consider giving it a bit of protection over the worst of the weather, even if you are just wrapping the pots in layers of insulation.
Kingsland white do the best for me up in the Highlands. They needed good regular water cos I'm coastal too so pretty windy, and I noticed the scapes taste the best compared to other hard necks. 38 out of 40 were awesome, the other 2 were uprooted by a cat, so never mind. They did take a good while to cure though compared to other garlic ive grown. Enjoy cos they're very tasty. No garlic growing this year as I'm putting up my polly tunnel..
@@eliandkate i side dressed with blood fish and bone end of spring. Other than that I just left them to it. Germidour was OK... Big bulbs but a lot of their skins split should have lifted them earlier, so ill need to get through them quickly and Eden Rose were OK. Messidrome were another good performer but ill definitely do Kingsland Wight again, by far the best.
Hi Eli , loved your update today I always use IOW Garlic and have just returned from a lovely trip there and brought home my Garlic which is safly planted out , I got Rosewight , Merseywight and Kingsland Wight, happy days x
The rains been non stop here (Falkirk) my garden and raised beds are water logged so this video is perfect timing.... im planting garlic for the first time so will do what you have done and put it in pots...should i cover my pot's with tarp to orotect them from getting wet and if so when should i uncover them ....im new to gardening so any help is appreciated. Oh and did you take all the paper of the actual clove? I was going to plant them with the skin on 😐lucky you posted this video when you did lol. My friends are laughing at me because they say im being over protective ive got a new rhubarb plant and got it wraped up like a toddler ...well i dont want it getting to cold 🤣🤣🤣 or blown over with the wind ..... Can you tell im new at this
Eli - how deep were those containers you planted the garlic into? I also have lots of rain, as well as high humidity here in Tennessee. Think I lost a lot of my garlic last year but won't know until I harvest them in July.
Hey Eli, another great video. I think I’m binging ; ) It’s sometimes hard to know the best way to plant. Our weather changes from year to year in Zone 7A. What Zone are you in? Did you add compost on top of the garlic?
We’ll it is, so you’re right there… it’s just now been added as a mulch on top. It’s just the compost that they are planted into. So I made up my big batch of potting mix, filled all the pots and planted the garlic. No mulch on top, so that’s what you are seeing 😁 does that make sense?
I planted my Isle of Wight garlic last week and also a French variety. I used those last year and they stored well. Lovely to meet you and Kate last week at the Adam Frost evening in Edinburgh! You're as nice as you are on here. Thanks for the chat!
You’re showing off…. Last week? 😂😂 It was awesome meeting you too, hope your journey home wasn’t too bad, we were thinking about you. Now we’ve got a smiley face to add to the name 😍😍😍😍😍
Hi Eli & Kate, great video on explaining in detail anpit different types of garlic. I hope it grows well for you this coming season. Thanks for sharing and take care 🙂
@@eliandkate - salads, stir fries, mmmmmmmmm…. I just planted between 125 and 130 cloves of various varieties. I want to see if the scapes from porcelain, let’s say, are distinct from Mexican purple. Nakusp, British Columbia. And btw, your garden is a delight to behold. Neatness is not one of my virtues…. Lol!
Hey Pam I put a message out in the community a week or so ago but it maybe didn’t pop up for you I’ve taken some time away from making videos, I’ve mentioned this in a few videos but my health hasn’t been great for the last couple of years and I need time to focus on myself. I’ve not quit don’t worry, just that RU-vid takes up so much time that I really needed to find some time for me 😀
@@eliandkate oh my hun, I’m sorry to hear this!! I can completely sympathise! 100% you and Kate come first!! Please do rest tho! Even tho your not doing videos I bet your still doing lots of things (like living) lol I apologise for getting you to repeat yourself and I’ve not seen you say (my bad) Take care of yourself, if there’s anything I can do to help please say x
Och no Pam, don’t worry. It’s one of those things with RU-vid, you need to tell it to show you notifications for everything otherwise it picks for you. It’s so unreliable 😂
It’s not too bad once you get the hang of it Basically if you want notifications you need to subscribe to that channel and you also need to click the bell and tell RU-vid to send you all notifications. There is also a benefit to visiting a channel homepage rather than just clicking videos as you see them. The home page is usually set up with videos the RU-vidr recommends for you and you can see the tabs along the top with links to things like the community page or about page
I *loved* using my scapes last year - had the same problem you did and none of mine cloved. I still haven't gotten mine to grow this year. I'm with Kate - don't bin them 😂 Your containers will make it easier to keep out the weeds, as well. I like where you've out them to start off. The portability will serve you well! By the way - I like your hat 😉
