13 Reasons Why I Love Saving
Money is a powerful thing and if you manage it correctly, it can change your life for the better. Oftentimes, when speaking about saving money vs spending money, there is the question, "What is the point of saving money, if we are all going to die?"
People ask that question because you cannot take the money with you, so you might as well enjoy it while you can. I think people say this because society tells us that life is better when you spend more money. As if the more you spend and accumulate, the happier you become; however, I argue that the more you save, the happier you become.
In this video I give "13 Reasons Why I Love Saving."
1. We're all going to die
We are all going to die and that is a fact, but I think in order to maximize your time on this planet you have to save money because if you spend all of your money, then you have to work more. However, when you have money, you can have more control over your time and do what you want in life.
2. You can't buy your way into happiness
The problem with trying to buy happiness is that society is constantly evolving. Once you have the latest possessions, the new one comes out and you have to get the next one. It is a never ending cycle of spending money in the search of happiness.
3. The lack of money can make you unhappy
Money won't make you happy, but the lack of money will make you unhappy. We need more to survive and pay bills. If you are unable to meet your basic life needs and are constantly worrying about money, then that can effect your happiness. When you have savings, you avoid the unhappiness that comes from the lack of money.
4. Money can improve your life, but only to a certain point
Constantly spending money isn't going to improve your life, but spending money on certain things will. That means "meeting your basic life needs plus a bit more." For me, I spend 40% of my income and save 60%. I believe that is how much I need to be happy and I save the rest.
5. Sitting money gives you peace of mind
Sitting money is money like my emergency fund and investments that I do not plan on spending for a while. It is a nice feeling knowing that if I lost my job or needed to cover a big life expense, I could cover it financially. When you spend all of your money, you are depriving yourself of the peace of mind that comes from savings.
6. Sitting money makes you less desperate
If you lost your job and had no money in savings, you would have to take the first thing that comes your way. That often means bad bosses, low pay, and no benefits. However, when you have money saved, you can wait it out longer until you find something that is good for you.
7. Sitting money makes you more money
Having money invested in the market can make you more money over time. I invest in index funds, which on average have a yearly return of 10%. Although that is not guaranteed, if you are patient, your investments will start to be a passive income source making you more money.
8. You don't have to be as frugal
Frugality means different things at different phases of life. I have noticed as I get older, my standards get higher. When you have money saved, you do not have to be as frugal and redefine what frugality means to you. I will always be frugal, but having money saved allows me to change my definition of frugality over time.
9. Delayed gratification is better than instant gratification
Delayed gratification is "the ability to wait to get what you want." Many people use money to get instant gratification, but this often fades away very quickly. If you save and delay your gratification, it will be much better than instant gratification.
10. You don't have to base your decisions off of money
When you do not have money in saving, you have to make decisions off of money. However, if you have money saved, then you do not have to base your decision off of money.
11. You're able to take more risks
Money equals options. When you have more money saved, you can use that money to allow you to take more risks in life.
12. Life really is better with less
In my life I have learned that happiness comes from community and experiences, not from stuff. When you have less, you appreciate what you have on a deep level. When you embrace living with less, saving becomes very easy.
13. To live life on your terms
The point of having money saved is to live life on your terms. When you have money saved, it gives you options and you are able to live your life on your terms.
I do not believe that the more you spend, the happier you become. I would prefer to save my money, use it on things I enjoy, and let it allow me to live my best life!

Nice video watching the crypto market's ups and downs shows how quickly things can change. In crypto, strategic, informed trading isn't a choice; it's a must. Remember, caution is as crucial as ambition here. This dedication to continuous learning is inspiring...managed to grow a nest egg of around $87k in Bitcoin to a decent $246k... I'm especially grateful to Shea Ardolf tactics and strategies.

saving money makes me feel like I have my life under control. It allows me to know that I can choose to purchase something when ever I want to, but that I have good self control to be able to not do it when not required to. Keeps you going for a goal, with a set number to go for. For instance, aiming for your first £10,000 in your savings account. Then going onwards from that. But there should be a balance too. I don't want to live to work

I used to save 76% living on a boat. After 7 years bought a cheap house, put a roof on it, did some good hits on the stock market and killed the mortgage in 3 years. I've celebrated by now saving 56%. Hard core for 10 years but I'm now rent free. Don't have a lot in savings but heading towards 6 month emergency. 58 now. It dawned on me at 48 that I was heading for a serious loss of dignity. Wouldnt recommend going hardcore. Anyhoo its done now. Really agree with your thoughts, I spent a lot of years sailing and working in between. Saving gives you options. No cash no options. Thanks for your vids. Cheers from NZ

Hi fellow kiwi. Which stockmarket did you dabble in? I find the NZ market doesn't move much. Sharesies now has the option to invest in US and Aussie stocks although both are taking a plunge at the moment. Good buying op, although some RU-vidrs think the US market will recover slightly and then trend downward again based on past bear markets.

For years and years i didn't take savings seriously and just never paid attention. When I got in my mid forties I finally found out how treacherous life was without money. I saved. But then blew it all on nonsense. Then I was humiliated having to get food stamps, welfare and a loan to pay my rent. You can only imagine the environments you go into when that happens. After a lot of tears and being FIRED by a hateful boss,(for no reason other than her power trip) I swore this would NEVER happen again. I saved and saved and saved some more. I prepped my apartment with long term necessities like canned goods, rice beans and pasta, tuna, granola. No concerts, no ball games, no cable, no car, no mortgage, no unneeded clothes or gadgets. Public library for books, the occasional movie and reference books. I did travel but on the cheap with Megabus and other discount means. And for a long time I was a hostel king. But you're right as I got older and the bank account is much better I don't like hostels much anymore and only stay when hotels are just too much like NYC or Chicago. What I love now are what you said options and choice and NOT being a slave to a paycheck or the whims of other people controlling my time. The pandemic helped with greater self discipline as I was forced to cut out money wasting habits like the daily starbucks at 5 to 8$ a pop. And other little habits that creeped up on me. That money is now in SAVINGS. Sitting money😊 I still save half of my total income every month and it feels GREAT to have that peace of mind. Thank you

Great points! I stopped spending as much money on useless things when I looked at it from a different viewpoint. I would calculate how many hours I would need to work at a miserable job (taking into account the taxes, expenses, etc.) to buy said item. Most of the time, said item was just not worth it. I also started to look at the things around me as my energy and time spent, and it was a real eye-opener. I wondered why did I waste my time and energy to acquire all of this? So, I curbed my spending and am using up whatever I have. If I buy something, then it’s a necessity. Or, I’ll spend some money on travel and experiences.
@site_is_down

That's the easiest way to minimize our spending - to always convert the value of anything to the time of hard work it would take us just to buy any thing and that will make us realize that sometimes it could have taken us years of long works just for unnecessary things.

One thing that it’s funny and weird for me is that I’m Ecuadorian and feel cool when you talk about Ecuador but also kinda weird cause yeah there’s places where people don’t have much but it’s not just that 😂 is a rich country in other stuff, the soil it’s so fertil that can grow whatever we want so food is cheap, rent is cheap, and not everyone is poor yeah just clarifying that 😂

It's a way of life or lack of having one, due to a slave like mindset. Most people live on credit it's their way of escaping and thinking of the future now...working hard, saving, waiting..why should we the media says buy now...pay later Sad truth is they really do Pay for it much more later!

Yes. If we don't save, we're depriving ourselves from money. Especially when we're old, weak and unhealthy. It's cruel towards our older selves! We actually don't care about our future! Psychological science confirms that, sadly. We need to begin becoming kinder towards our older selves. Health declines rapidly, as we age. The earlier you begin to save, and the more you save, - the better!

Howdy, I think it really just depends on your life situation. I made a video (one of my early ones) on how I graduated college debt free. I like your content, but I wish you would focus more on fewer topics. You always seem to have 10+ ideas on your lists. I think it would be more productive and useful if you shortened them to maybe 5 items and spoke a bit more in-depth on each. Sort of following the “less is more” idea that seems central to your thinking. I think some of the topics on your list could often be combined to allow for better flow in the video.

It’s possible to go too far in either direction. My philosophy is save some, spend some. It’s not about trying to buy happiness with things, but using it on experiences is worth it, and doing it younger is better. Old age decreases your ability to enjoy certain experiences, so save some money for later in life, but don’t put off all experiences indefinitely in the hope that you’ll do it all later.

I think moderate spending is the key. Learning how and where to spend your money cannot only give us financial security for the future, but it can also give us the right memories to remember when we grow old.

Peace of mind is so important, I have an emergency fund and was recently hit with a medical issue out of nowhere, I wouldn’t have had the money to deal with this health issue without my emergency fund, and would have had to go into debt, or borrow from family. I’m so, so glad I’ve managed to put a little bit aside for these sort or unexpected emergencies.

#6 hit home for me because I've been there. I've been on jobs that I absolutely hated. Treated horribly by management and colleagues, but I couldn't leave because I needed that job. Once I learned about Emergency Funds and the benefits therein, it was a game changer for me. I recently changed jobs...but it was done with patience and far less (if any at all) panic a desperation. I am living my life on my own terms these days because I have that precious tool that helps me make my decisions as I see them to be necessary...I have options, I have money, I have health...I'm good!!!

I have a Lot of nice things, I've lived almost everywhere, I've traveled all over and I have to say that all those things I've done did not make me happy. In the end all I want is a tiny home with a porch to drink my tea knowing I have money saved in case I break a hip or something LOL :) Saying all this at 36 makes me feel like 63. We save so we don't have to depend on so many for freedom to live the way we want.

So true about the phone, cases, accessories, etc! That first decade of smart phones I was getting one every two years (carriers had started pushing 2 year upgrades even before smart phones). I have been on prepaid for years now and keep my phone for years. I also buy my phones unlocked from the manufacturer, so it's kind of fun to jump to different prepaid services to try them out, and no hard credit checks involved for prepaid. The "Sitting Money" resonates with me too. When you're able to finally save enough to cover emergencies, then save enough to cover a few months of expenses, you're able to breathe! When you have 6-months to a year saved, you start to worry less about your job and maybe even become bolder in your job because you have a safety net if you lose it. Delayed Gratification -- that's not something the credit card companies want you to experience! As a kid I remember saving up allowance to be able to finally buy a printer or modem or other gadget. It was so satisfying when you finally had enough and could go to the store and pay the cash for it! Even now I still "save" for a large purchase or delay it for a while to make sure it's something I really want.

I remember hearing that everyone in China saves 30% of their income. I had an appointment with a client who was born in China. She has her CPA so I thought she would be a good person to ask for verification. She said everyone in China, rich or poor, saves 30% of their income. I asked why they save so much. She said it is because they have zero hope that the government will offer any kind of assistance for them if they fall ill or are too elderly to work. I have given some thought to that as to why Americans are poor savers. Perhaps it is because we have a belief that no matter what, our country won't let us go without food, shelter and healthcare. I live in Los Angeles, we have over 100,000 people living on the streets, many are elderly and have major health problems. I can assure you that the government is not helping them.

Only 30%? Weird... I aim for 50%+, I have background from USSR/Siberia 1980-2004, Canada 2004-now. I'm Polish Ukrainian Jew, maybe it makes a difference? I try to save every cent above my needs. Luxury items are rare in my basket. Maybe once every 3-5 years. I also derive huge joy from creating, not as much from consuming. I've developed this habit personally, in adulthood, since I'm RESPONSIBLE for my own life as of 18. I took that responsibility seriously! Got educated, got wise, established goals and followed through, immigrated, have a family. It's important to parent yourself correctly after 18.

I usually find that the people who ask that question are the ones living in and with debt. The same question can be asked of them... if the end result is death, and that's all you're willing to see, then why live? Side note: being cheap isn't the same as being frugal. Frugality is being intentional with your money. Keep up the great job on your content. There will always be internet trolls hating. My great aunt was 88 when she passed. She didn't have a life insurance policy, but she hid cash all over the apartment she shared with my sister. There was more than enough to pay for her funeral. Should she have invested it? Maybe, but that wasn't her style. She was about 40 in 1929. She lived through hard times and didn't trust banks. She was born in the late 1800's. I was a teenager when she died. Maybe she misplaced it. I've done this. Yesterday I found cash in our house. There was enough to buy groceries I ran out of cash for. We're buying items from BJ's so we don't have to shop weekly. I really hate shopping. Not shopping every week will free up cash and time. As we pay off debt, we have more options. We're unloading stuff we don't need. It's nice having space in my home and budget.

Hey Austin, love your channel, mostly agree with what you say! But let me ask you one question: do you have or want children? I am a woman, who has two of them, now grown up. I was widowed at a young age, for me happiness was never only in buying things. But often i had discussions with my son, who was influenced by classmates and friends, who wanted to have the same fancy stuff his friends owned... He had all he needed, we were not poor, but i refused to buy him the newest and expensive brands he longed for. Today my grandchild has the same taste for expensive things.... I always had the focus on doing something interesting with my children, instead of buying things. So what and how would you teach children to see money the same way you do?

I save so that if there's an emergency, I have the means to financially take care of it and pay cash. Also, due to a family medical emergency out of state, I am able to eat out and not worry about the costs (eating out is not something I do when at home). I also had $2365.00 worth of car maintenance, I was able to pay it off in cash. When shopping, I am a minimalist. I have nice clothing, but I don't have lots of clothing. I buy when I need. I save so it gives me the security to do anything I may need to do when something spontaneous occurs. I save so it relieves me of any stress of bills, something I'm glad I don't have. I don't feel I am frugal. I just don't need a lot of stuff and things. Too many things overwhelms me.

Nice video. I lived in Buenos Aires for three years around performing artists who had very little, but who were much happier than many of the people I know who make a lot of money in the US. I think I learned the same thing you did from your experience...one needs very little (as far as material things) to live a happy and connected life. As long as you don't get wrapped up in keeping up with the Jones' once you make it back, you'll be set for life.

I am a little older than you and having spent 3 decades being frugal whilst working in a modest job I retired at 51. I was able to do this as I had amassed enough reserves to no longer work for the rest of my life, I can do this not because I’m very wealthy (I’m not), but because I know I don’t need very much and sustaining my basic needs is fine. When you achieve this equilibrium point as a frugalist it brings more different questions about life that I think it would be interesting to discuss. On a different point … it was very amusing to see you must having a Netflix subscription as being an essential thing! I’m quite content with no tv, no subscriptions to anything. Perhaps it was a joke?

Rent beautiful million dollar apartment by beach 500 week feel on holiday everyday. Travelled 40 countries with husband who died aged 67 at Xmas. Glad had all experiences prior and before COVID. Now frugal downsize volontary simplicity recycling minimalism , frees up time for family and friends been semi retiring since 50 not waiting till 65. 3 day week as rn gives life some purpose but not enough burn out.
