In this video, I review the new Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X and Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones. And I compare them to the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 ohm headphones and the open back 990s as well. In this video I’ll tell you if I think you should upgrade from the DT 770 or DT 990 headphones to the Beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X and Beyerdynamic DT 900 PRO X headphones. I talk about sound quality, build quality and what you can expect from mixing and tracking with these headphones.

Love your reviews Sanjay, I’m a hobbyist music producer and I always end up mixing with low bass while using the 990 pros, it may be really worth switching/upgrading to the 700 pro X just to get accurate on the bass mixes. Great review, Sanjay C does this kind of review so well! I like the 48 Ohm rating of the ProX, plus the removable cable and other parts, so I've gone with the 700 ProX. The problem with 250 Ohm headphones is they don't work with most instruments like keyboards and grooveboxes, or listening devices such as phones, tablets ect. as you'll need a headphone amp to drive it. This is not practical for mobile music making. The 770s do come in a 80 Ohm version but are not much cheaper than the ProX in Australia. The 770s are about the same price as the Sonys here as well, which is weird!
@fabienbouisset

I'm surprised also not seeing a comparison (or a mention) for the 770 - 80 Ohm. Isn't it more compareable knowing that the proX is louder?

Hey, if you've gotten to listen to the 700 Pro X already, do you mind sharing what you think about the highs? Almost every review mentions that they aren't as clear as on the older 770/990 Pro, probably due to the lower impedance. Thanks in advance!

@EggiTheShadow
@EggiTheShadow 2 года назад
The 1770 would be closer to what you're used to since it uses the same driver as the 1990. I think you would be disappointed with the 770, i haven't heard this new version 700 x but based off my listening with the old version it just doesn't compare to the 1990. Highly suggest for you to go to a shop and give them both a listen and decide from there. 1770's are really aggressive though, a completely different experience to the 1990
@mister_xenomorph
@mister_xenomorph 2 года назад
@@EggiTheShadow Considering the 1770 Pro's are twice the price of the 700 X's, I'd probably look into the latter first unless I could afford the former at the time 😅 I also use SoundID Reference when mixing, so by then I'd figure a profile for the 700 X's would've been produced.
@EggiTheShadow

@@mister_xenomorph Ah okay haha i wasn't considering prices. I usually listen to the natural sound of a headphone cause i don't produce music, but since you're using soundid refernce i guess it doesn't really matter which one you get they'll all be fairly similar anyway.

I bought the 770 Pro 80 Ohms a few weeks ago as of this comment thinking they, and the 990 Pro would be around without an upgrade for quite some time. And not even a week with them, Beyerdynmics comes out with the 700 and 900 Pro X's. Ugh! As tempting as it is to want to upgrade, I really do enjoy the tuning of the 770s and they make my music so much more dynamic and spacious. As far as that treble peak everyone seems to have issues with, I find it offers a level of detail that I really like. I think maybe the complaints about it come from those who listen to their music way too loud which can really drive that 8k peak pretty hard. However, at lower to moderate volumes, it's very tolerable and welcome in my book. And out of all the headphones I've owned in the 40+ years I've been an audiophile/music lover, the 770's are the only ones that have an audible and present sub-bass. If it's in the music, they present it so distinctly. Even if the sub-bass is not in the music, I can hear some trailing ends to it if it's out there waiting to be presented. In fact, despite its well-presented, detailed and punchy bass, these are not basshead cans! I don't know how Beyerdynamics does it but that's a quality I will never give up! But dang, those 700 Pro X's! --sigh--

I have 32 and 250 ohm Beyers. The 250's are probably clearer (2 diff models), but I think the differences are more in how they modified the old DT driver for 32 ohm vs a totally new driver. I don't buy that higher impedence makes a better speaker, and I believe 80-250 ohms was a utilitarian design choice by BD. Consider super high end, money-no-object studio monitors - if it mattered they'd be making these with greater impedence than 4-8 ohm.
@hrodebertcoad9848
@hrodebertcoad9848 2 года назад
@@JN-qj9gf Monitors have a bit more... "natural impedance" let's say, in that they have to deal with a lot more air pressure when they operate compared to the much smaller diaphragms in headphones. I believe it's usually about damping, as you'd notice some cheaper low impedance headphones sound muddy even if the general construction of the drivers is sound. Usually this is the results of sounds not dying off fast enough. I guess speakers would also have the benefit that the noise is also typically way quieter than sound from the main signal that's driving it. There are plenty of other factors of course, sound is a complex and complicated thing to engineer for.
@YOGIKRASPRO
@YOGIKRASPRO Год назад
In a nutshell you can’t compare directly impedance of two completely different headphones. Dt 700 pro x has new designed transducer which acts differently than old one used in dt 770 pro. Because those are built in different way they sound different. Unless your signal source has high impedance (greater than 5 ohms) you will be fine with 700 (couse their impedance is a bit lowwer than 50 ohms). Low impedance in those headphone also make them more versatile. You should also have in mind that lots of headphones made for audiophiles has low impedance. In summary both headphones have unique sound and both are extremely clear and using them is joyful experience. I hope this makes sense for you. Regards

thanks for the review! i was hoping for more elaborate review on sound quality! the rest is easy to see (detachable everything) can you clarify 1) even though the 700s are closed, and technically open back 900s can have better separation for purpose of MIXING, you still think that the 700s can be used for mixing? this is confusing only bec even Beyerdynamic on their catalog states 3 out of 5 for 700s for mixing, and i think 4 or 5 for 900s 2) the 700 pro x reviews say they have too much bass = more than 770s (enjoyable sub bass for audiophiles but not necessarily for producers/ mixers). Did you feel that wayl? 3) did the 900s sound Too bright (some reviews say) so overall my ques. which is more neutral 700 vs 900? (seems like 700 have hyped bass, more neutral highs compared to 900 , vs 900 has "normal" unhyped bass, boosted highs (sometimes sharp and excessive) , but also a wider / bigger soundstage due to being open i do appreciate that you mentioned that 700s are more useful bec. they allow you to cut out outside noise (most pros still promote open backs for mixing)

Good review. You stated that the 770's 250 ohm version have better separation/imaging than the 80 ohm version. So, have the 700's, with 48 ohm resistance, have the same or better separation/imaging than the 770's 250 ohm? What has been sacrificed in the 700 to accommodate the flexibility of plugging in pretty much anywhere without a hp amp?
@nicktan4530
@nicktan4530 2 года назад
Hello let me explain to you. I have the Dt 770 250 ohms the old version. The truth, is yes 250 ohms is clearly the superior ones in seperation/imaging although your mileage may vary depending on your ears and source. 80 ohms have more oomph to the bass response. I have no idea about the 48 ohm resistance, no it does not have the same separation/imaging. For watever reason, the impedance have different tuning and have no idea why, over signature remains the same. The sacrifice of the lower impedance are less performance of separation/imaging, tighter bass response and detail as well as clarity. Not as less distortion but to the human ear, its beyond our hearing in terms of distortion and noise.

I bought both the 700 Pro X and the 770 Pro 80 ohm. Here's my two cents: - The 700 doesn't just have lower treble than the 770, it feels like there is no treble at all. All of the air and detail we enjoy in music, gone. Yes, the 770's treble can get a little excessive at times but it's still better than having almost zero treble in my opinion. - The 700 has better sub-bass extension which is great but the mid-bass has a higher bump than on the 770 which makes kick drums annoyingly overpowered. They've replaced the treble spike of the 770 with a mid-bass spike instead. Pick your poison. - The 700 sounds a bit muffled compared to the 770. Maybe it's the new thick filter fabric they put over the drivers, but the 770 sounds a little clearer and it's not just the higher treble giving off that impression. I've heard other reports of the 700 and 900 Pro X sounding like there is a veil over the music. - The 700 has a narrower soundstage than the 770. Not by much, but it's noticeable. - The 700 has a much higher clamp force which makes it way less comfortable than the 770, despite having deeper earpads. And I don't have a very big head. In conclusion, I'd go for the 770 Pro as it has a clearer sound, a wider soundstage, is more comfortable and cheaper. The treble spike and lower sub-bass can easily be fixed with EQ and the 770 Pro can easily be modded to have a detachable cable (just look at a RU-vid tutorial). The 80 ohm version has just enough volume when driven by a phone but the 32 ohm version and 700 Pro X can get louder. Hope that helps some people make a more informed decision. Peace!

U can hear high, mids, lows all perfectly and balanced. Had them for few years now, absolutely Zero complaints, zero ware&tear, still looking brand-new. I also have 2 other headphones, I used em for reference when I'm mixing. But Im always looking what else is out there

I don’t know what year your DT770 were made - but since the fall of 2020, Beyerdynamic has tuned the sound of this 770 family (they went in a black and orange box). I have DT770 (80 Ohm, autumn 2021) and I will tell you that their midrange sounds very sharp at times and cannot be called V-shaped 😉

I had it and I sold it. I will definitely go back to the DT 770 Pro 80 ohm as a secondary headphone, but I think the right direction would be to add a bit more cash and buy the NDH 20 from Neumann. The quality of the components is terrible. For example, the jack connectors in the cables were incorrectly made - one of them broke, while in the other, not yet used, I noticed badly poured sleeves. I immediately decided to send them back to the website - the complaint was accepted. Less than two months have passed since we returned from the complaint and headbnand fell apart. I doubt that they are still fully made in Germany. I am leaning towards China rather. And moving on to the sound itself. If you are looking for headphones for the production of electronic music - techno, trance, house, they can do their job, but do not reckon with the fact that the Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X are neutral or close to neutral headphones. It's hard to mix the middle with them. The treble is warm enough, delicate, and also subtle, and certainly not so analytical, raw (as in the case of the DT 770 PRO) that your ear could get "glare" and catch inappropriate harmonics that you need to get rid of, for example. Similarly to this situation - and the other way around. They are definitely headphones that color the sound, and I had them for 8 months and if someone tried to persuade me to buy them again, I would categorically refuse. Beyerdynamic let me down this time, and I had hoped for him as a fan of closed-circuit headphones during music production.

Hi Loads of Thanks for the detailed and precise review of the Beyerdynamics. I have a question, I do not sing just do voice over in order to post it on podcast, on the voiceover I add purchased music on background and edit all this on Logic Pro, thus can I simply plug dt 700 pro x (closed) into my Mac and start editing on Logic Pro or this headphone will only work with soundcard?

Problem with the DT 1990 Pro is the excessive peak in the treble at 8.5kHz making consonant sounds ear piercing. That peak is atleast 10dB too loud.

Hi Sanjay, if my comment reaches you, kindly help me with a query. I have noticed that when I record vocals while using my headphones (direct monitor on), I always get an out of tune actual vocal. This is very strange because when I use either one ear open or no headphone at all, my vocals are spot on. Can this be something to do with headphones? I use AudioTechnica m20x. Regards

I agree with you, using 770s for ages. Might get the 700 though but I can't work with open backs. Distract me way too much... and my mixes are still great using closed backs. MKight get a VSX set though too for refining mixes.
@Darkslide2AR-FE
@Darkslide2AR-FE Год назад
I know they say you should mix with open backs but to me it's more personal preference and not just what works best for one person works perfect for everyone. Just my thoughts on that, feel it's just being said way too much however I do think it's good that you're using both open and closed backs as they point out different things and give you better idea in mixing.

Humans like to oversimplify things to make up simple rules of what to do and not. Saying never mix on X is as absurd as saying you should only paint with X type of brushes. Use exactly as many brushes as you find appropriate, listen on exactly as many devices as you find appropriate

When I sold my m50x and msr7 I was looking for some Beyers, mostly for studio and everyday use. I almost bought dt770 (it would have been tough choice because of nondetachable cable and high impendance) but I found Beyerdynamic Custom Studio. I am really surprised why those are so underrated. They have all pros of Dt770 and of course detachable cable (3 in the box, coiled also), are made of aluminium and hard plastic and have impendace around 80ohms. I can see that Custom Studio are currently sold off on the EU website, so they will probably get rid of them and replace them with the X PRO line.

I have the same thoughts. When I bought Custom Studio, I just ordered a second one as a spare. They are great. In addition, they have a bass control, and the price was also very favorable. They cost less than 200 euros. They don't have the tiring treble as in the 770, and they are also very detailed.

Yup, still have the 990 and I use them as my mixing/mastering headphones. I recently added Sony MDR-7506 as tracking headphones. I learn and have been learning the EQ curves for them. Plus the Waves NX room emulations - Abbey Road Studio 3, Ocean Way, CLA - has those curves for compensation. That is a good point with the open back. I will add that while it can be annoying depending on the environment, open back does allow for some room interaction and this is usually why it’s recommended for mastering purposes.
@adamgreenhill110
@adamgreenhill110 2 года назад
Those plugins are good, I use Sonarworks with my 1990's and makes a world of difference. Open back is good for accuracy, but they don't have "room interaction"; that's a misconception. They just leak sound instead of reflecting inside the cups, making an 'open' sound. But your room doesn't reflect enough sound to 'add' anything

I would love to try these as a beyerdynamic user my self (DT990)... but it isn't really a fair fight, I mean these cost twice as much, so I would only assume they must be better. They should have put the detachable cable in all of their headphones though in my opinion... I really hate the coiled telephone cable my 990 come with.
