Why I'm Throwing My Whoop In The Trash

I've been tracking my sleep every day for 5 years and although I love my Oura ring, it's pretty useless when it comes to fitness.
With so many of my friends swearing by the Whoop 4.0 and telling me how much they love it, I thought this might be the all-encompassing device I've been searching for.
But after using and wearing it for the past a year, I've decided to cancel my subscription and throw it in the trash.
Watch this video to find out why.

1. Charger is USB c. You will not have to purchase another charger as you likely have one. 2. Whoop does have a strain score for Strength Training workouts that accounts for the lower HR. 3. My Wife and I have had our bands for 2+ years, no smell and extremely sturdy. 4. Whoop tells you your "restorative sleep" calculating REM and Deep. They don't try to hide the fact that your sleep percentage is based on total time.

1) mostly talking about puck 2) doesn’t work well and can only do their programmed workouts 3) I use the sauna every day so yeah that’s what it says about me 4) it should be factored into overall sleep score, dumb that it doesn’t

So I have a Whoop, and have the same struggles with it. Ive also had the Oura ring and liked it, except for the lack of fitness part. I have an AW Ultra and the Athlytic app, but my HUGE issue with Athlytic is that that it doesn't factor your sleep into your recover score. it literally says that in the app. Supposedly the reason being is that you could only sleep for 5 hrs, but have a really good HRV so you're good to push it. However, as an amateur athlete, I truly feel that sleep, both duration and quality are really what drive recovery on a day to day basis. HRV is a nice trend to see over time, and if you could be overtraining, but I really don't believe it has that it has the same impact that sleep has on whether or not your are recovered. This is the big problem that I have with Whoop and to and extent the Oura ring. Whoop definitely prioritizes your daily HRV value over sleep. Three days ago, I slept 6hrs, but had a slightly elevated HRV so I got a Green Recovery, but Im not gonna lie, I was exhausted and could barely turn the pedals. The next day was red, because I had a couple beers, but I slept 7.5hrs (I know alcohol is bad), but I actually felt great all day. Then today I slept 9hrs, but had a low HRV maybe because I'm at altitude and in a very dry climate, and was back down to yellow, but barely above Red. I went out for a 10k Tempo run and felt amazing. I also have a Garmin FR955 and honestly I think the data is the most accurate to how I feel, though the app is a little lackluster. I really want a device or app that prioritizes sleep for recovery and just gives the HRV for trend purposes to see if I'm getting sick or overtraining.

The monthly option is £27 per month, every month with no discount, absolutely overpriced for a health tracker which has had no upgrade for several years now, and no feedback from the developers for when 5.0 is coming. A joke for what the competitors offer

It seems to be that Fitbit should tick all your boxes. The Inspire 3 has 10 day battery life, is super accurate and is so light and compact you forget you are wearing it. Plus the app is super easy and you can dig as deep into the stats as you feel you need to.

So...I´m using whoop for a few years now (started with the 3rd Gen Wristband) and it definitely has it´s pro´s and con´s. But so does pretty much everything. There´s no "one fit´s all" in my oppinion. But I have to give my 2cents to some pints you made in the vid. 1. You have to buy new Bands because they get dirty/disgusting Sure you have to, but so you do if you are using a smartwatch or pretty much any fabric thats close to your body. Even these rubber-wristbands of the smartwatches get absolutely disgusting and you have to buy a new one. And if I´m looking at the prices for 90% of fitness tracking devices, the device itself costs you anything between 300€ and more (living in europe so can´t speak for amerika). Sure the monthly plan isn´t the cheapest and you have to count that in as well, but for the data it provides you, I think its a fair price and they are constantly working and improving the software and the devices, so in my oppinion, that price is okay. 2. Broken wristband Sure it shouldn´t happen but I´ve made the experience, that whoop is super quick and costumer friendly in handling such cases. My wristband broke after 6 weeks of normal usage and after some e-mails I´ve got a new wristband sent to me for free. Don´t know if you tried that, just wanted to throw that out there. 3. The point of your friend - whoop is overwhelming sometimes Well I do agree to a degree. Yes if you go through every single number it CAN provide you with, it gets overwhelming. But to be honest, I got that device to track my health/fitness/sleep. I wouldn´t be paying the monthly price if it would give me any less data. So it´s basically just about what you look at/ what you take or want. If you want only basic stuff I´d recommend everyone to get a smartwatch. But that´s pretty much what he recommended anyway with the apple watch. 4. Charging I´m definitively on your side with that one. I´d love to be able to charge the whoop itself without the battery pack. But I´ve never managed to lose mine, so that´s not a point I can really say anything about. I forgot to bring it with me, that definitively, but I´ve never lost one. But yeah, "direct" charge for the whoop would be great, even if it would be via wireless charging. Thanks for the video, loved the pace and quality of it!

If smells so bad buy a new strap, why are you even letting it getvso bad If the products free make it good? Make that make sense. Whoop is great for the audience its aimed at. It's not for everyone. And although I generally agree that there are good alternatives to Whoop, I have to point out a few things. First. Cable length. Seriously? It's 2024, and you probably have a dozen USB-C cables lying around at home. If this one is too short, use another one. Second. The fact that you don't wash your strap says more about you than it does about the strap. I wash mine regularly, and it doesn't smell at all. Third. Apple Watch doesn't take pulse and HRV measurements every second. Even with Afib History enabled, the number of measurements-and thus the relevance and accuracy of the data-might be significantly worse. And fourth. Athlytic can't work with HRV RMSSD.
