Geographic arbitrage involves advantage of cost of living differences between different locations. For example, you can make money in an expensive place like San Jose, California and then retire and spend money in a less expensive place like Las Cruces (or Silver City or Alamogordo or Truth or Consequences), New Mexico.
Let us know in the comments about any great examples of geographic arbitrage that come to your mind.

I grew up there and my parents still live in Las Cruces (and we are all white and say the name with the horrible American pronunciation). It's a GREAT town to retire in. Great weather (invest in good AC!), lots of open spaces, plenty of outdoor activities, almost NO traffic (rush hour is when you are 5 cars behind at a stop light), you can get anywhere in town in 15 minutes or less, the food is OUTSTANDING, and the people are nice. The only reason I moved (in Seattle area now) is because of the limited economic opportunities in the city...but if you are retired, that ceases to be an issue. Housing is dirt cheap down there too. I think you would love it!

Ditto! You took the words right out of my finger tips. My wife and I retired in California, quickly knowing we couldn't afford to live there without jobs. We were fortunate to have a lot of equity in our CA home. Like this video's author, I did a lot of homework/research and developed a list of criteria for possible retirement destinations. The list included: affordable housing, diverse population, college town, good selection of restaurants and retail stores, great weather, proximity to international airport, Blue state. Considering those criteria, Las Cruces jumped off the map. I feel like I'm rambling so I'll sign off...

John Nemesh: "...horrible American pronunciation)" Why "horrible?" You sound apologetic, but that's how American pronounce it! After all, this is (still) America, not Mexico. As for me, have lived in El Paso ~50 years...know PLENTY about the area (that may be glossed-over here in this video, as is done on CityData), Las Cruces and Mexico. Presently, however, I'm living in Colorado -- you should heard the "pronunciations" here. ;-) -- BR

I moved here 20 years ago from near NYC and love it. Only problem is that we're so close to Texas and stuck with Arizona on the other side...Went back 5 years ago and couldn't wait to come home to LC! Covid has slowed things down, but before that things were hopping...tons of arts groups and loads of activities, all so easy to get to. Just up the road from me I can get over the pass into Aguirre Springs for a nice drive....and the taxes on my house are about 10% of the ones I left in Jersey. Literally. We moved here to save money and we did! As for the weather...100 here is nothing like the 90's in Jersey, which is HUMID...here, dry heat really makes a huge difference...it's not half as oppressive as living in Jersey in the summer! At 70, I feel chilly! You acclimate easily....Also, there is no issue with the border here! We are not being overrun by drug gangs from Mexico!!! The good people of LC also helped a lot of the migrants a couple of years back. We have a complex that houses the homeless, with concrete bases for tents off the ground, food and other services! This town has a big heart!! PLUS...I garden all year...my winter garden is amazing! Go to my channel to see videos!

No one is in a hurry ( people wait a long time to go when the light turns green, or that was just my east coast mind getting the way) I will retire there no doubt in my mind. Retired & a resident of Las Cruces. It's a great place to retire & definitely lower in cost of living. We have three hospitals & lots of medical facilities & specialists. In 1990, there was only one hospital. When we arrived here, there was only one Walmart; now four. Additional medical specialists can be found in nearby El Paso, TX (about 45 minutes away). Traffic has picked up, however. Great post.😊🌵

Enjoyed your video. I love New Mexico, it's my favorite state. Lived in Las Cruces in mid 90s for a few summer months trying out a job. I loved the people there very friendly. Yes it is hot there. There are nice places and not so nice, like anywhere. Yes, housing prices were (are) very reasonable. Would be good for retirement living I think (I am retired). The reason I left the job was more of environment, we could have made it home with my family economics wise. We lived in Santa Fe for a few years prior and loved the multicultural vibe there, Native American, Mexican and Gringo. Las Cruces lacks the first one and I really missed it. Funny. Good luck with your decision.

Attended NMSU for a couple years. The area is among the cheapest to live in the country and overall it's a decent place. Cost wise I think it would be a good place to retire; however, if you want to be able to see medical specialists, you will have to go out of the region to places like Houston or Phoenix, or go into Mexico. If medical is your concern I would stay clear from the USA, the US system will bankrupt you quickly in excessive medical and nursing home fees towards the end of your life.

Like you, I also have certain idiosyncratic tastes in where I live, such as liking medium sized cities that are within easy driving distance of bigger cities and major airports. And yes, summers there would be hotter than I prefer, but at least it's a dry heat, with cool mornings and evenings, coupled with great weather the rest of the year. And even though I'm a gringo, I dig Mexican culture. I'd even looked into moving to Mexico before, but decided something like Las Cruces might be better for me, while still getting to experience some of that culture.

Nice pics and commentary. Lots of what you say makes sense but its a tad hot for this New Yorker and Albuquerque with higher altitude and more temperate climate is more appealing to me. Real Estate in LC is definitely a great deal and it has grown by attracting seniors. Grew up in Naples, Fl so no interest in living in God’s Waiting Room ever again. Also prefer a bigger city with more going on. The proximity to El Paso and need to go there for “big city hit” is exactly why I have RULED OUT LC...I refuse to spend a dime in Texas and even checked routes west that avoid going through it. I will gas up in Oklahoma and set cruise control!!! I suppose I,owe it to myself to check it out (LC) before I make a final decision, but I am mid-fifties with more years left working still ahead of me. Thanks for taking time to post!

@@multicollinearityfi Hi there! I decided on Albuquerque NM so I can “retire in place”…Being affordable NOW was super important, not just post retirement. I found a great deal on a 2 br/1 ba condo with a garage. I closed on it in September…it needs some updates which I can do out of cash flow, but my costs are about 50% less than renting similar. I should be able to pay it off in 8 years paying what my Milwaukee rent was and with modifications completed by then. With maintenance of $212 and property taxes about $89 it’s a steal of a deal!!! I will easily afford it post retirement, and will be able to continue to max my 401k while working. Meanwhile it is centrally located to lots of fun destinations while working and in retirement. This month we have Balloons! Having lived in NYC and Milwaukee, the references to “high crime rate” doesn’t really alarm me as I located in the lovely Northeast Heights, and really do not plan on doing drug deals at 2am in the International district (or anywhere else!) Driving has been an education, but all in all I am happy here, and I hope my well guarded secret doesn’t get out too much!

But everywhere on youtube points to lots of crime-AND gangs, which means organized crime. Small wonder being within ~ 100 miles of Mexico. Hi, Greg. Las Cruces is so far from the coast that your risk of storm damage might be higher on Long Island than it is in Southern New Mexico. Compared to Florida, Texas, etc. I'd consider New Mexico low-risk for the worst storms (but nowhere is risk-free, especially as the climate changes). Crime is definitely a concern in New Mexico. You can use web sites like City-Data.com to compare crime statistics for where you currently live to crime in Las Cruces. My hope is that New Mexico policy makers are tracking the data and investing in law enforcement. Does anyone reading this have a sense of how much gang activity there is in Las Cruces?

My sister and her family lost power for a week and had to stay with us. At least 10000 CO2 consuming trees were lost in NYC alone; countless tens of thousands more on LI and upstate.
