It's just a name for a cute pet. 🥰Calling a person this wouldn't be acceptable, but a bearded dragon isn't going to be offended lol.

In my personal opinion, I agree with you. Not everyone is going to agree on the same matters. I love the name Stumpy. It did not occur once to me that it could come across as offensive. People have different perspectives tho, but it doesn’t mean they should automatically label you as “ableist.” People name their animals based on their appearance all the time! (For instance, Spike, Spot, Fluffy, etc.) and Stumpy just happens to be one of them. If you intended on naming him Stumpy in a mocking way, then I could see how it can be upsetting. But it doesn’t seem like the case. Obviously it would totally inappropriate to call a person stumpy, but an animal isn’t going to be offended lol.

Honestly, for a pets name, is it really that much different than naming him Spiky, Scaly, or something else that is based on his physical appearance? Of course it's not right to call a person stumpy. It's also not generally okay to call a person some sort of name based on their physical appearance anyway... I think Stumpy is fitting and he definitely has enough spunk in him for two beardies! My beardie, with all four of her legs, could honestly use some of Stumpy's energy lol!

As a content creator you will unfortunately always be attacked or criticized, it is inevitable. It is up to your self-awareness, critical thinking skills and own personal research to differentiate between when to (1) consider the criticism as valid after reassessing the situation, and change it accordingly, or to (2) stand your ground because of your own different perspectives and values. Always keep an open mind, and yes, have empathy, but trust yourself! Especially when it comes to criticism from strangers on the internet, this is important to keeping your sanity and integrity as a public figure. My two cents about the situation: I deal with chronic illness and debilitating neurodevelopmental disorders (don't really feel comfortable sharing the specifics publicly), and even inside these communities people wildly disagree about certain words, what language is offensive or not, what situation is acceptable or not, etc. It is not like there is a written guideline for these things. I used to be more easily offended and righteous when I was much younger, about the "proper" use of words (mostly because I was chronically online and lacked nuance in my thinking lol. many such cases) and then got a bit "hit" by reality when I had the chance to start interacting in person with many other disabled people, from a lot of backgrounds. Realising how much disagreement and different opinions there are from person to person is pretty eye opening and humbling. Sometimes even complete polar opposite opinions on what makes someone hurt or comfortable! So how can you fulfil and respect both those polar opposite opinions, in cases similar to this? It is not like the "majority" opinion on twitter is the common consensus about the ethics of language when it comes to how disabled people, as a whole, feel. The community is not one big and uniform entity. Not to mention, even then, what is considered acceptable can change drastically every few years! I believe you have explained yourself more than enough, even if I personally think you didn't have to. Lastly, from personal experience, if someone gets genuinely upset about hearing such words as ''Stumpy', endearingly addressed to an adopted bearded dragon with one missing leg (in a video on the internet, no less), they really need to step back and reassess their mental headspace. Genuinely, not a jab. I know the internet can be a very important retreat for many of us who struggle, and I feel for you. But working on your mental resilience and tolerance for different opinions in whatever way you are able to, and can afford to, is vital to your own inner peace as a disabled person navigating the internet. I yapped a lot, but just wanted to share. much love to you and your adorable new member of the family!!

I don’t see anything wrong with naming a bearded dragon Stumpy lol. People name their pets based on physical appearance all the time. For humans it would be rude, but an animal isn’t gonna be offended lol.

I think it's cool It reminds me of Sergeant Stubby, a Boston Terrier/Pit Bull mix that served as mascot to the American 102nd Infantry Division in World War I, who was repeatedly recognized for heroism. He located wounded soldiers in No Man's Land, and dragged them back to friendly lines if he could. He used his acute senses to warn his human comrades early when he smelled poison gas or heard incoming artillery fire. He even once captured a German spy all by himself, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Stubby Stumpy's in good company.

Y'know, screw them and their 'seek-to-find-offense-ism. My father is a hand amputee has been for at least 65 years. During the 1970's CB radio craze, his handle was "Captain Hook" . When he was playing Ralph 'Raif' Rackstaw in H.M.S. Pinefore there is a line: " Is not my love as good as another's? Is not my heart as true as another's? Have I not hands and eyes and ears and limbs like another?" and he said 'Hand" instead of Hands hand held up his hand and hook. He embraced and celebrated it. I say go for it.

Sad that you have to explain why, its not malicious in any way, but there are too many looking for anything to put someone down. I kinda thought about renaming my blue hybrid when he lost a lil bit from his tail from a small kink to stumpy.

@@reptiliangarden I know, but they shouldn’t be offended by names that are not offensive. I mean, I had a gold tegu that lost half of his tail by accident ones and my brother called him stumpy and honestly I thought it was hilarious but joke was on him because it turns out can grow their tails back. Point is tho people shouldn’t be offended so easily. If it’s an offensive name, but something like stumpy no big deal.

@@reptiliangarden If by "offended" you mean "unwilling to tolerate the idea that I'll always be considered as less than a whole person by society", then sure, I guess you could describe that as "offended". But I don't think that's really the most accurate word.

I am very sorry that you feel that way. I personally don’t want you to feel that way ever. I made a personal decision to name my lizard something out of love. It was not meant to make you feel any less of a person. I truly wish you the best and hope you have a good day.

@@samb1055 you seem like the type of person that will get offended by anything for attention. You act like this is an attack on YOU personally which it is not. I myself am disabled and I make light of the situation with nicknames like stumpy. I am living proof that this ain't that serious. But nice try trying to hold everyones attention for no reason 👍🏻😂
@thereptilorian
@thereptilorian 3 месяца назад
@@hillarylove2305 see, I don't see this person's comments like that at all. They respectfully voiced their opinion, and merely offered one perspective on what the name brings up for them. You have another perspective? Does that make this all about YOU? No. It's not "all about" anyone. These are conversations she is going to have to get used to having, so she might as well start now!

I think I get your point here, but would you name your channel "The Always Sick" girl? Would you want your chronic illness plastered across your forehead like it's the first thing you point out to people? A name introduces you to the world, and well, we can see that his leg is gone. Was just hoping that we could go with something more creative, like Captain Ahab!
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 3 месяца назад
It’s all a matter of perspective and how you view the situation. I chose his name to represent his difference in a positive light and share education on their care. A disability is not something to be looked down upon. It is something that should promote compassion, understanding, empathy. He was named with nothing but positive reasoning and if others view it another way, they are entitled to their own opinion as well.
@thereptilorian

@@reptiliangarden I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of disabilities, and applaud your want to show them in a positive light while educating others. I really like your channel! I just think you might get a more positive reception if you are open to all fan bases! I think that if there are people feeling 'another way' in your comments section, it might be helpful to consider their viewpoints, instead of automatically dismissing them.
