Why I Needed No Man's Sky

After a famously rough launch, No Man's Sky was the laughing stock of the internet. However, Hello Games worked hard to fix their game, and have turned it into something truly incredible. No Man's Sky may not be a perfect game, but it it was the perfect game for me right now.

And many of us loved it at launch. Alot of the problem is preordering and over the top expectations that clouded a good game that just needed to grow. I may have crashed 3 or 4 times early on and with the exception of some of the glitchy problems you get with updates it's been running great ever since. Many gamers need to avoid the hype train and the rush to be the "number 1 fan". Too many are more into fitting in and jumping on bandwagons (good or bad) that they dont' care if they kill a game or not. Luckily, HG sat back and endured and kept going.

I found the coolest base location, I can't even describe it.. On an icy world with a HUGE cave system, hundreds of metres tall, god rays of light flowing from the ceiling, trees growing peacefully contrasted with the snowstorms outside. The cave entrance is actually halfway up a mountain, so I built a landing platform going out the side of the mountain, overlooking some red lakes at the bottom, with my base buildings hanging around the 'roof' of the cave. I love this game.. I build a tiny base everywhere I find that's beautiful, so I can come back later.

It's good enough that I just ordered parts to build a new gaming computer yesterday so I could crank up the graphics. I'm a tight a**. I don't just spend money for no reason. This game was worth it. It is a game you can get lost in. Exploration, pirating, trading, mining, farming, base building, missions, and even a little bit of ranching. Like commanding a massive fleet of ships you can send out on missions? Got that. Like having a massive ship that you can build a base on that you can have follow you around from system to system? Got that too! Love that show Stargate and were pissed it was never made into a game? We got stargates! Seriously. Love driving vehicles, submarines, or even a walker suit? Here you go. You can even play with friends. 18 quintillion planets. Planets with weather. Rain storms, fire storms, lightning storms, ice storms, wind. And ya, the lightning hurts. You know those giant worms on Dune? Got those too, and they fly here. What more do you need?

It took weeks, and was one of the most enjoyable things I have done in NMS. I still recall some of the (mis)adventures I had along the way...the trip was far more enjoyable than the arrival. You can also 1. max out units, nanites, & quicksilver 2. max out MTs and/or ship(s); like really max out with only best of top S-Class 3. there's room in the freighter for a 13 level maze (21 x 21) 4. I've been wanting to play this game for a long time, but only until this year I could buy a computer that could run it. And I'm so glad I did: I'm 300+ hours into No Man's Sky and enjoying every bit of it. The Artemis storyline is great and there are many things to do. But what I find myself doing the most is simply jumping into a planet in which no Traveller has been before, taking pictures and relaxing. How weird is that you play a game to do sightseeing and just chilling. My biggest worry was that, due to its procedural nature, the planets had started to look pretty similar. But the Origins update has fixed that in a wonderful way and I feel as if the game has started again for the first time. Your review was insightful, funny and overall excellent. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The biggest thing about this game is that even the most seeming repetitive tasks are inherently different. Do I send groups of my fleet on missions from my freighter? Yes but reading what is done on each mission is different. And my yields are different every time.

Unpopular opinion: No Man's Sky was pretty good from day 1, and very few people parroting that "No Man's Sky was horrible but now it is finally good" ever played it until recently. It's certainly a *different* game now, and probably a *better* game now, but back then it was just a game about exploration. There was no base building and no vehicles--you had no reason to stay on a planet. You were constantly on the move, just stopping long enough to refuel your ship, take in the sights, scan a few things for money, launch and then move on. It was not a bad game. It was passionately loved by those who loved it. Everything was special and interesting, from the oceans to the mountains to the caves, from the cold nights to the firestorms to the acid rainstorms. It was beautiful and unique, yet you couldn't stay--somehow you knew you didn't belong and needed to keep moving. Yet, you couldn't rush too quickly, because there was no ending; your journey just repeated in a different galaxy. The point was the *journey*, not the destination. The universe felt like it was created for you to enjoy, but it was so much bigger than you could ever hope to completely explore over your entire life. You would enjoy and appreciate the small part you had access to. Explore caves. Trek through snowfields. Park your ship on a canyon and watch the sunset while relaxing to the sound of rain hitting the canopy. Those are my most precious memories of this game, and they were all there in 2016. Check out Noah Caldwell-Gervais's video about No Man's Sky for a different perspective right around the original launch.

8:23 - Extremely well put! This is not a game I have had an easy time trying to explain to someone else. After the main story missions are done, possibly earlier in the game too, you've asked yourself "what's the point?". Even semi-early stages in the game can leave you without any direction, and for the most part it's down to you. Aside from all that there are a couple areas to geek out on ingame like cooking, refining, base building, exploring & documenting fauna/flora. Missions inside space stations & the Nexus is another. But seeing how many various community driven projects there are, various sub reddits (NMS cords exchange for MTs, starships, fauna etc. among others), Galactic Hub Project (I think) ended up in the game. Another is the Galactic Atlas site for Euclid which can be used in real time...

Games that I can recommend on scale from discover to feel: - Subnautica - Breath of the wild - Hollow Knight - Nier: Automata All of them great positions that you should definitely check out at some point and again, so glad to have u back!

Nehh, Hollow Knight’s a bit boring, 90 percent of the time, I spend walking around not knowing what to do, it just feels very shallow.
@jandziegiel6288
@jandziegiel6288 3 года назад
@@prinzdenax It's true that it often doesn't tell you what to do, but that's what allows you to discover stuff on your own. It is a lot less satisfying in my opinion when the game leads you by the hand to every discovery. Given how complex is world design of Hollow Knight (you pretty much always have 2-3 ways to get to an area, making it possible to have different playthroughs each time) I wouldn't say it's shallow. If you ever feel lost in the game I suggest opening a map and checking out the corridors that seem open on the map, that you didn't go through for some reason, and if you see a place with a path that you can't get through due to lack of mobility or smthing, tag it for the future. At some point game will give you the positions of 3 dreamers that'll also help with direction in case of feeling lost

This was an amazing video. I have a couple recommendations for games. God of War, Hell Blade, Ps4 Spider-Man and I just recently started playing Genshin Impact and I highly recommend that aswell. Each of these games evoked that sense of "feel" gaming just in a different way. Genshin just being the latest. The whole video I was thinking that if I made a video like this it would be about Genshin Impact. I have been playing the same mindless games and it was getting to the point I didn't want to play. Genshin came out and it was like a breath of fresh air into my gaming life.

I started loving the game in August of 2016, watched it live streamed over 1000 hours and then bought a ps4 pro and began playing with Foundation. I'm over 1000 hours played and mostly bored the last few dozen updates. I'm glad people loved them but I loved exploration and not grinding collectibles. This update (another free one) has put that feeling of wonder as you explore again. Finally, HG has "remembered the face of their fathers". (And I'm part of the Gek Nip Gang..a few hundred nms lovers that came together 4 years ago and now play all kinds of games).

One of things I think the game succeeded at that no other game has is they made everyone an explorer with infanite places to explore. It's literally a brand new feeling. Lewis and Clark could only explore and discover so many things. And once they discovered it, everyone else is just a tourist. This game lets everyone be a Lewis and Clark. My only hope is that they put more in regarding the different races, find planets that have cities and are populated. Maybe not always by advanced races either but tribes or something. If you have not yet, I do suggest trying it out in VR.

There are a lot of things I love about NMS. The third person gameplay, the base building, the AMAZING visuals and atmospheric worlds, the detailed cockpits that are specific to each ship...but there are also a lot of things I hate. The look-alike ho-hum station interiors, the inability to choose ships from a single "store"-like location to purchase or customize them to your liking, the ABYSMAL galaxy map functionality, the ENDLESS grind (I mean do we really need two completely different types of fuel for each of our ships that get drained like we're flying space Cadillacs? Not to mention jet pack fuel, weapon energy, O2, life support etc in a universe where you should logically be able to buy everything you need from the gargantuan space stations that are in every solar system) and the inability to find specific locations without having to fumble your way through learning how to use the rip-off Stargates. Every place NMS fails for me, Elite: Dangerous, it's much more serious older brother, excels and vice versa. I bounce between the two a lot and, while I love them both in their own ways, I find myself wishing that there was a way I could mesh the two together into a single perfect space game. (Yes, I know that Star Citizen is technically the thing that I'm talking about but I'm a platform gamer, not a PC gamer, and I'd like to have a game that's not perpetually in Alpha/Bata that's constantly eating up thousands of my dollars with no true release date on the horizon.) Whenever I feel like launching from my personal carrier group, flying around all willy-nilly to take out some bogies and breaking atmo on a new planet through the clouds, I pop in NMS. And when I want to do some hard core RP with no story holding my hand (other than what we're given via Galnet) in a 1:1 Milky Way and do some grunt work for the Alliance, it's E:D all day. But what I wouldn't give for a console based space game that gives me everything I want in one package... By-the-way, if you haven't given Elite: Dangerous a try...you should. Once you get past the learning curve (or, more appropriately, learning cliff), it becomes something wholly unique in the console space even if you sort of have to "make your own fun" with it. Who knows? Maybe one day when gamers are finally tired of SC's cash sucking and force its developers to drop the product, maybe we'll get a console version of it on the PS8 and the XBox Infinite or whatever we're playing on when that happens two decades from now.

Exactly how I felt about.. few years ago. I went back to playing single player games and I remembered what games used to be like. It took me back to my days with the GameCube and PlayStation 2. I see my bro and some of my friends stuck in today's game structure: you have to play this game so that you can get the [in-game currency] and if you don't you feel bad if you don't get your "dailies". So then what's the point of playing if it becomes a chore. I picked this up and am playing it only on PCVR. Graphics look even worse, but, oh boy, the experience is breathtaking.

7:30 I totally agree , since one of my favorite things about Warframe is remembering to just enjoy the feel of the gunplay as you headshot grineer, blast angry corpus into space, or suck squealing infestation chargers into a vortex. For me, it's the little things, and the SUPER detailed environments in some places. For a game that has such fundamentally pleasing basics, it then is purposefully designed to numb the player's brain with the distractions of "what goal am I grinding for." Some of the "numbing" games must be enjoyed with a strong will to experience their other joys. And hey, I love the challenge of grind sometimes, that dopamine high of pumping resources out of a defense mission, but grind MUSN'T replace our original reasons for gaming.

I'm a little late to your video but I share your sentiment. I've been through many video games while hiding from covid. Even sandbox ones like Snowrunner. But after a while, every single game is a grind. But NMS is special indeed simply because it allows me to goof around, horse around & just go off somewhere with no objectives to fulfill.

One thing I've always been obsessed with in this game is discovering/scanning everything...especially animals! You'll always find something new you've never seen, with this update its waaay better with the diversity, bringing in the anomaly and other new aliens are amazing but yeah the story and quest and everything else is so meek, I only play so I can collect everything (mainly s-class exotic ships, they have so many different variables which makes the 6 ship gap really fucking frustrating... Wish they gave a garage or inventory so you could own all the ships or guns.. Seriously imagine just being able to pick from your garage inventory to warp ANY ship inside your freighter BUT you can only have 1-3 on the freighter at a time, so you can still bring ships in and trade with them.. That'd be 10x better

I just picked up the game before the Origins update came out. This game made me feel what Skyrim did almost 9 years ago. Telling my friends over xbox live all the cool shit I found while exploring caves and all the cool shit they found while doing quests. I don't really look at games the way i used to anynore. Im not all about which one's better developed or better liked by the critics/players or which one has a competitive community. I like games that relax me and this one feels like therapy when I start it up after dealing all day with angry or annoying customers.

I clock 220 hours and I don't really call nms making me feel, cause some games evoke strong emotions on me. But to think of it, nms did make me feel, it is just more subtle. Even after 220 hours, there still sense of wonder and some sort of meditative quality to just sink into the atmosphere. Then there are the hours of tediously trying to get the perfect planet for settling in or finding S rank stuffs, lol!
