Once the vinyl fad wears thin, They are gonna continue to push the digital streaming all the way and kill off CDs for good. All future music people buy will be in the 'cloud'.. (Does any current automobile even comes with a cd player?) . However when that .com collapse finally occurs (whenever that is), there goes ur music...and possibly anything else u entrusted the 'cloud' with

I don't understand the meaning of the cd today. Do you want a physical copy? Vinyl is much bigger, beautiful and fascinating, the covers are small paintings. Do you think he feels better digitally? Use streaming which is more convenient and cheaper than the cd. Help me to understand why someone should buy CDs in 2022 instead of using Spotify and buying vinyls.

Cds wont go away, this new garbage aint selling & wont last. If you have 200 great cds, are you going to buy them again as a download. Did you know cds are still selling better thandownloads. If you have a collection of cds, you have all you wont. Thats why new cds aint selling. Cds sound better than downloads. Too much wiring on computers screws up the sound. These 24 bit fdiles dont sound as good as cds. These new dacs dont sound as good. These old r2r dacs sound better than new dacs.

I owned a Record Shop in Connecticut (not that this makes me an expert, just for background) from 1978-1996. CDs virtually changed the landscape overnight. The store went from all vinyl to all CD within a period of weeks because that is what the public demanded. They demanded it because the sound was superior. That was common thought back in the day. As far as today’s love affair with vinyl..to each his own.

Just noticed your name - Uncle Jim's, right on Main st east Hartford / Glastonbury townline. Cleanest independent record store I ever went to. Went there occasionally from 84ish till 93, when I moved to Florida. You still had a lot of 70s sealed vinyl cheap well into the 90s on the back wall. I got a Hall and Oates H20 picture disc there, a Paul Dianno import picture disc there, (those were used and had a price sticker that looked like they originally came from Record Breaker in Manchester) and a still sealed Stories - about us. Circa 1990, got my Hothouse Flowers Home longbox CD there. Probably a lot more, but that's what I remember.

I bought my first CD as a teenager in 1986, and I never looked back. I can certainly understand why someone would want to listen to vinyl records, but for me the added expense, and lack of convenience doesn't make much sense in 2019. I know for some people they are nostalgic, but so is the CD for me as I play my collection on vintage early '90s equipment. As for sound quality that is so subjective. Either can sound fantastic. So that argument is pretty much a waste of time. The CD though for me gives me something tangible that I can hold on to. So it satisfies that need of physical interaction, and something collect and store on a shelf. On the flip side it is also easily converted to other modern digital formats, which is important for taking your music on the go with today's devices. Converting a vinyl record collection on the other hand is not very practical. I see the CD as the bridge between the old and the new. I think when the latest vinyl craze dies down a lot of people are going to be upset that they let their CDs go, and you will see a CD resurgence in another 10 years or so.

Being old enough to have seen 78s, 45s, LPs, EPs, tapes and CDs, I know which I prefer:: CDs every time! For me CDs have a much better sound, they take up less room to store, and you can put several in the player at one time and listen for as long as you like without having to fiddle with a turntable. No having to get up and down to turn over the LP. Having to be so careful that you don't scratch the record if you want to repeat a track. All done with the touch of a button with CDs. I can still play the LPs I have had for years, but have updated many of them to CDs. Aside from all of that there is only 6 or so tunes one one side of an LP. Also they are way too expensive. The only good thing about them was the nice covers - particularly when I could gaze at a nice big picture of Elvis when playing the disc.

Great video, Ben. I pretty much agree with all the things you said. If I'm driving around obviously I need a cd or cassette and at the house it kind of depends on the mood I'm in and what else I have going on. I still usually consider owning an album on vinyl to kind of be an honor. There is something about the fragility of the medium that kind of lends itself to that feeling. It makes it feel even more like a precious and sacred thing to be treasured if that makes sense. If I really want to fully immerse myself in every way possible into the ritual of the music I will probably grab a record. When it comes to albums I'm more likely to want to jump around on (hip hop albums are a good example) I'll almost always go for the cd. Ultimately I'll buy an album on whatever medium an artist puts it out on as long as it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg. I personally love all 3 options

Well said! The reasons why CD dosent sell so much these days is because every major & minor artist over the last 60 years already has their entire back catalogue out on CD, some often several times over the years on various 'Anniversary' or 'Super Deluxe' editions. So the vast majority of people already have them. Those that dont can buy second hand copies on ebay etc that play as good as a brand new copy. So theres no big rush to put out CDs like there has been the previous 30 or so years. Also todays modern artists are more bothered about downloads & streaming. They jump on the 'Vinyl Revival' craze because its the latest gimmick. All the old artists are re-releasing their back catalogue on vinyl because they see ANOTHER way of making even MORE money on OLD recordings that most people already own!!! This vinyl revival will soon dye out. Its just a fad. 99% of recordings these days are made digitally anyway & most vinyl re-releases of 'old' recordings are from a digital re-master made for CDs as the analog tapes are long gone! So in essence they are buying a CD pressed on to vinyl! Your example about the record cover is spot on. I Do miss the 12'' cover on 'some' albums but at the end of the day I'd rather have crystal clear sound & lots of longer or extra tracks because listening is all about the music not looking at a cover. Vinyl is the Vampire of music media, it died once & now it needs a stake through the heart so its dead once and for all!!! (Please dont get me started on cassettes!)

I knew a "metal" guy at my old workplace (NOT a friend) who didn't own a single physical cd/lp/tape album of any sort but had multiple thousands of downloads - and he boasted how he never pays for music. I think he viewed me as some "dumb dinosaur" that still bought vinyl and cds. So these days I'm happy that people still get it and are for buying and collecting physical media to show support for the bands and labels. Besides, collecting cds/lp/tapes is fun regardless which format is your favorite. That said, I do agree with other comments that too many modern pressings of LPs are warped and/or not made properly. That doesn't help the argument for vinyl. Cheers.

You are absolute correct about vinyl not reproducing the full dynamic range that is possible on a compact disc. The problem is not the format itself, it is the mastering technique. It is a case-by-case situation regarding whether a vinyl or a CD sounds better. For albums from the 90s and backwards, vinyl will typically sound better but not for the overused "analog vs. digital" argument. They typically sound better because the CDs from the 1980s and 1990s typically did not have very good conversion jobs. The reason why some albums in the 2000s and the 2010s sound better on vinyl also is not because of the "analog vs. digital" argument (especially considering most albums are recorded digitally nowadays), it is because of the amount of compression of the CD and the vinyl happened to have a dedicated vinyl master. Even then, not all vinyl gets the vinyl mastering treatment for new albums and reissues. In the comments section of this review for The Flesh Prevails by Fallujah album, Zack Ohren explains how he was not aware that Kingdom of Conspiracy by Immolation was even released on vinyl and was not approached by Nuclear Blast to make a dedicated vinyl master. www.angrymetalguy.com/fallujah-the-flesh-prevails-prevails-review-of-the-dr10-master/ At this point, the CD format SHOULD always be better than vinyl, but it's up to the mastering job, whether the CDs are compressed enough, and whether the vinyl has a legitimate vinyl master to make an accurate comparison. Essentially, vinyl is not objective "better" from a technical standpoint. At times, it happens to be "better" than CDs but not inherently because it's vinyl, it's because some vinyl albums have a better master than the CD. Most of my collection is CD-oriented. I'll buy vinyl here and there but I mostly collect CDs for many of the reasons you mentioned and more. From a technical standpoint, the one format that can objectively be argued as the best that I am aware of is 5.1 surround sound mix.

Thanks for the opportunity. I was a little half-cocked with that stupid statement of mine, and actually agree with a lot of what you said. You're quite correct in what you say about the mastering. In terms of mastering for vinyl, there's probably a dozen folks on the planet who understand what they're doing. In my country there's one, maybe two if you count Alberts. The big problem for CD is not its ability to reproduce but in the mastering. Like photography, everyone now thinks they can do it and many potentially great recordings are destroyed by an overwhelming desire to make everything sound loud. A great example for me is the band Muse. While I quite enjoy their early albums I find the production gives me a headache after 30 seconds. Live they are no problem. As with everything there are examples that contradict everything both you and I have said. There's a RU-vid going around comparing flac CD and vinyl of the same recording using the not inconsiderable talents of Terry Bozzio and Tony Levin. It's long and very dynamic. I listened to this video over and over, blind, on all kinds of equipment and had it on constantly so I could drop in and out at any time, not knowing which version I was listening to. Finally, I firmed up on a conclusion as to which version I preferred. FWIW, it was the CD.
@BurntOfferings138
@BurntOfferings138 5 лет назад
@@DC-js4gk When comparing CD to vinyl, everything is case by case. There are times when the CD is better and times when the vinyl is better. The mastering is what determines whether a CD sounds good or not. If an album gets released on vinyl, if it has crummy mastering, it will sound exceptionally crummy. A lot of modern vinyl doesn't sound particularly great because they don't have dedicated vinyl masters. I'm always very skeptical when buying an album on vinyl. Pretty much anything Rick Rubin produces nowadays is bound to sound horrendous. It's fitting you mentioned Muse considering they actually talked negatively about Rubin. There's a reason the Guitar Hero version of Death Magnetic sounds infinitely better than the CD version. The mastering on the CD stinks on ice. Like I said, everything is case by case. I love both CDs and vinyl, but if a vinyl sounds like crap, I will likely avoid it. If a CD sounds like crap, well... it's pretty much expected at this point because the loudness wars are still in effect. Some vinyl reissues sound better than the CDs, though. My vinyl reissue of Reinventing the Steel by Pantera (I give you full permission to make fun of me) sounds unbelievably better and more dynamic than the CD version because it was actually taken from the original master tapes and given a vinyl master.

So glad to know I’m not the only one who still loves CD’s the best! Vinyl looks cool for the bigger artwork and if it’s a colored album or picture disc, but come on: we all know it’s only popular again because of hipsters. CD’s were all we listened to in the 90’s (and cassettes in the 80’s). These vinyl enthusiasts who get all excited over LP reissues of 80’s and 90’s music clearly weren’t even alive then or were really young because I didn’t know a single person who was into vinyl back then. Most of the stuff I listened to 20-30 years was never released on vinyl originally, so if they truly wanna be a hipster they should buy the format that most used back then...and it was CD’s in the 90’s.

I find it weird that vinyl is seen as the "pure representation" of the music. If you send a digital master to the pressing plant, you cannot be exactly sure what you're gonna get with either vinyl or cassette, whereas cd is pretty much a 1:1 copy of the master. So it's a better presentation of what the artist intended, whether you like it or not. Lots of people I know prefer to listen to their own stuff on cd, which certainly makes it a bit harder to dwell in any vinyl elitism. It appears to be that cd and also cassette are in some small way making a comeback, due to problems related to vinyl production. There are limited amount of pressing plants available, all of them busy pushing out beatles or metallica remasters, and because of this, smaller labels have to wait, often more than six months, for their products. Whether this will lead to new plants being opened, to also help to keep the costs reasonable, is another thing. Even then, the shipping costs for 12'' are doomed to be pretty unreasonable, especially for trans-atlantic routes. The sales margins for vinyls are low and revenue is hence to be mostly collected from cd sales. If you prefer vinyl, that's cool, but it's kinda detrimental to keep on ridiculing cd as a format, because that's what the whole scene has been built upon.

I collect cassettes and CDs. They don’t take up much room and don’t cost as much. CD quality is top notch always . Cassette is my love and hobby so I understand vinyl folk. But it’s so easy to buy a new CD for $4-15 and hear something near perfection. Once you get past 2002 CD is your only option unless people went back and reissued releases on vinyl or tape. Agree on everything said One thing about vinyl is that the art work looks nicer and the record itself looks cooler to me.

Vinyl is romantic and nostalgic, and has some great qualities. I'm big on artwork and liner notes, so that's an obvious advantage due to scale BUT that has nothing to do with the music. I draw a distinction between vinyl from the vinyl era (mostly 1950s-1980s, mostly) and new vinyl (1990s-present). Classic vinyl is pre-digital. New vinyl is (often) basically digital recordings on an analog medium. To me, CDs are the workingman's format: stable, inexpensive, durable, playable almost anywhere (as long as optical drives are around) AND high resolution. ALSO CHEAPER THAN mp3s (at the moment -- hit that bargain bin!). 80% of the comments I read on Discogs are complaining about how a vinyl pressing is botched. Don't get me wrong: if I had a huge house and an unlimited budget I'd listen to vinyl. But that's not the person I am or the lifestyle I have. I'm with you.

When I was younger I was all CD, now im focusing on vinyl, each have their own advantages and disadvantages. But if you ask me, the reason I focus on vinyl because its just cooler, and as life gets busier I listen to less music, so vinyl helps me make a point of setting aside a bit of time. as for quality I think mastering has more to do with it than the format. But with vinyl, even brand new and cleaned in a professional machine, played on a brand new stylus will have surface noise, people like to get high on their analog horse, but analog is a hell of a lot more susceptible to interference. Another aspect is the collecting, if you're into collecting vinyl is probably the better option. I for instance am collecting every release i can find for my favorite band, signed, different colors of albums etc. The price also gives your music purchase more weight, you cant pick up 6-10 records every pay, but you could probably pick up 6-10 CDs. I tend to get most albums I really listen to a lot on both formats, or vinyl and lossless digital ideally (the appeal of collecting is not that it takes up all of my space! lol) Well, that was a lot longer than I expected, if anyone actually reads this let me know if I made any sense at all or if Im just talking crazy!

Beyond that functionality has reigned supreme (CDs work great in my car, in my computer, in my DVD player, Video game system, etc. -- it's also super easy to convert it to digital files, which for me is important as I listen to music at work everyday)..... For the most part, I have merely augmented my CD collection with records and cassettes for releases that were not released on CD (with a bit of bleed over on the cassette front).... If something is not on vinyl and I really really want it I buy the CD, it's a no brainer. i prefer vinyl, yes, but that is largely nostalgic, I admit it. It costs me more, yes, but I choose what I want on vinyl and what I want on CD, sometimes I buy the same release on both, because like you I applaud the artists and want to reward them for their great work. I've curtailed much of my vinyl purchases. When it's done right (which in my experience is only one out of every so many these days) I prefer vinyl. Skinny Puppy's Last Rights on 45 RPM sounds phenomenal. Easily my best sounding record. Also, all of the vinyl High On Fire releases surpass the overly loud CDs. Amazing difference. Just fills the room. All that being said, most of my music purchases are on CD and tape these days. It bums me out a bit when I go to a show and see a new band I dig and they don't have either for sale. I simply cannot afford $25+ for every album I want to check out (the average being $30). I understand the costs involved but I just can't do it. Also, I really lack the time to enjoy a record. That's a lot of money to just sit there. Space has also become an issue. And finally, one of my biggest gripes about vinyl is warped and or noisy pressings which happens way too much. CDs and tapes will probably always account for the bulk of my music purchases.

I get what you are saying,, but for me the listening experience is almost a religious thing, I love the care that goes into albums, the preparation, the old smell, the surface noise, it's all very satisfying, as for cds, I find them very cold and sterile, they do serve a purpose, mainly out in the car, but as I said, for me, when I sit down to listen to my music, I'm not a casual listener, I leave my music for home, and don't get me started on jewel cases, now when they started making the cardboard cover cd packages, that stoked my interest, because they looked like something more human, but for sound, they both sound great, I just prefer albums.
@cbcdesign001
@cbcdesign001 5 лет назад
The surface noise is contamination, it was not recorded and the listener is not supposed to hear anything that wasn't part of the music. This highlights for me the reason why Vinyl is an inferior format to digital, all the problems with records that led to the creation of CD, still exist.

A lot of people say that u don't get the same experience with the album artwork on CDs as u do on vinyl. As a young lad, I had 100s of tapes. It was just as cool to unravel a long stretch of cassette sleeve to reveal photos, liner notes and lyrics as it was with an LP. And they are smaller than CDs. I remember the first 5 years or so with CD releases, they made those big narrow jacket covers to duplicate the feel of getting a big record album. Then because it was eating up too much space at stores and taking up too much landfill, they ditched the sleeves. Things were never the same again, because CDs displayed all clustered together by the 1000s made them look cheap.. and budget bins certainly added to the cracker jack appeal. People didn't seem to be as curious about an artist they never heard of because it was filed right against ten .99 cent sealed copies of Pocket Full of Kryptonite. Anyways... I'm babbling..

For those that remember the 70's there was one super standout record by Iron Butterfly called In A Gadda Da Vida. Now, Etco (or someone with the rights to the recording) TRIED, repeat TRIED, to release it onto the CD format and many people that knew what the vinyl version sounded like were tempted to toss their last meal. The HISS on that CD was atrocious! It actually over rode some of the quieter passages of the drum solo. Even the cassettes weren't that noisy. I have both the vinyl and the reel to reel versions and they still sound great today. The CD has long since been flipped into the trash can where it should have been tossed before it ever left the factory. This is but one of the many CD fails over the history of the now soon to be extinct mode of listening. Many stores no longer carry CD's much less the blank medium to make your own. The newest ones are nothing more than junk before you even get them home. They soon refuse to play anymore or else their laminates start peeling apart leaving you with a neat clear piece of plastic to make a clock out of. I know of which I speak because I have a box of culls that are over 500 deep of CD's that no longer will play without skipping, IF they attempt to play at all. I am an avid music collector of all mediums of music and the CD's have been my biggest and most hated mistake!

A properly mastered cd, with a great design/booklet/etc is better than vinyl I think, even if the album was recorded on analog tape originally. Why do I think so? Well, because vinyl has inner groove distortion and gets static and dirty (cracks and pops). That doesn't happen with reel to reel. Yes, tape can get dirty too, but you get my point. Likewise, cd doesn't have IGD and and problems with static. If someone records in analog, and they wanna release an analog copy, Chrome tape would be the best. They sound amazing, and metal tape is just too expensive. I LOVE vinyl, Especially 70's and early 80's ones, but it's messy and lots new vinyl is hit n miss soundwise. Whereas my old Alan Parson's records, for example, sound amazing on vinyl.

I switched to CD after a few years and now have several hundred. I can't see any reason to switch to vinyl now. They cost way too much, can't back them up to a hard drive, can't play them in a car, too fragile, and when you're listening mega long multi disc albums like epic drone pieces, you have to keep jumping up and flipping sides every 20 minutes or so.
