So many of you have asked about why I drill holes in the pots of my plants so this month's #plantwithme is all about the pros/cons to drilling holes and not drilling holes when growing your house plants in semi hydroponics or passive hydro. It's a preference thing, I really like have the drain holes so I don't overwater my plants. I'm a constant overwater-er, but if you're already pretty chill then using filler pots may be what's best for you. Experiment and try new things!

What you wait'n on Princess? Git to plant'n. You can control it to your situation. Don't be afraid. Start with a Pothos, Monstera Deliciosa, Arrowhead plants, Dracaenas, any one or two of those you can pick. They are easy to find. Most of all easy to take care of. Just water and then let them dry out most of the way. If they are wet when you buy them, let them dry out most of the way before you water them again. You can put them in pots you like later. Let them sit in their nursery pots for sometime until they get used to your home enviro. When you do put them in new pots make sure you do that DURING THE WARM SEASON, OK. BLESS!! John 3:16-18

You've inspired me to switch to semi-hydroponics. Got my LECA yesterday, getting pots today, and buying superthrive tomorrow. I didn't know I liked plants until my aunt gave me an aloe vera and now I'm in love. But the soil has mold and lice and gnats and I DON'T DO BUGS! So thank you for these detailed videos. I can't wait to grow more things. Stay dope Queen!

Some thoughts from someone who has been doing passive hydro for years. 1. Leave an inch or so between nutrient solution and the roots of the plant. It will make your plants roots reach for food. In the beginning it will make for a more hearty plant. You will notice air roots. You want to create a happy spot between water and air. 2. Dont use straight tap water. I use a repurposed milk jug that i fill and leave the cap off so the fluoride etc evaporates. I was told by an aquarium guy that that is not enough but it works. 3. Food. I doubt growing in just water will work. I use a fertilizer that is made for hydroponics. I like General Hydroponics mostly because it's less expensive to others but after a while you will get burned roots from the salts if you don't "flush" out the water. It is 10-4-14 and I always use less than recommended. 4. Ph... this is a funny one. Ph is a measure of how alkaline or acidic your mix of water and food is. The scale is 1-10. I think, although i may be wrong, you want a Ph of around 6. The reason it matters is that your plant cant eat well without the right Ph. 5. Roots do not like the sun. In my world clear containers promote algae. Algae will eat the plants food before the plant can. The hydroton, or LECA i guess, will block some light but I always cover my containers. Although it doesnt look good I cut paper grocery bags to wrap around the container.

9:50 I devised a hack for easily for removing inner pots out of their cache (outer) pot. Getting your finger in there to lift it out can be a PITA (pain in the arse...only saying bc my mgr asked me the other day what PITA meant lol)...esp w/ tight fits. So I use a hot nail to poke a hole about a half cm to a cm down the edge of the inner pot. Then I make a little loop out of fishing line. It creates an invisible handle. You can do on just 1 or on both sides.

I recycle plastic jars and use a soldering iron to burn holes in them. I find this method safer (and faster) than drilling, especially drilling glass. If I have a lovely glass container, I use it as a cachepot and insert a perforated plastic jar (or orchid pot) in it.

Ive been doing semi hydro for maybe a couple of months. Im still trying to figure it out or what works best for me. I havent drilled holes yet, that is on list to buy the drill bits. For now, I have used the small glass yogurt jars for my tiny/seedling plants or used a cheap dollar store non clear plastic pot w/ a cache pot. Oh and Ive done the basket pot (orchid pot) in a glass cache pot. Clear pot is definitely easier & more gratifying to see the root growth. I think its time I try the hole method now. Registered to vote & here in WA everything is done by mail as far as voting. Thank you for the reminder to all.

What might help in regard to using the catch containers with the nursery pots and avoiding the stagnant water smell, is if you use something to raise the inner pot from the bottom of the outer container! So I like to use bottle caps, or tiny plant pots that are upside down, so that the inner pot with LECA is sitting higher up within the larger pot. Then air can also diffuse throughout the sides of the container and reach the water as well! I have not tried LECA yet (going to be trying soon), but I do this method for my soil pots nonetheless! It also has the benefit of making the plant look a little more pretty by sitting higher up and seeing more of the plant :)

I think you were one of the first video I watched for getting into leca. Now almost all my indoor plants are in leca. But drilling holes I think I will pass. I will probably end up breaking all my containers ! Lol. So glass containers without holes and my preference is to have a proper hydroponics container although some are in glass coz they look beautiful with the leca in it . Only thing is the glass container must be small else it's hard to get the water out without the leca pouring out as well ( without holes )

Sorry in advance because I have so many questions lol (I'm a new plant mom, started a week ago, and I found out about LECA from you, so thank you so much. And I absolutely love your videos and your vibe and aura!) I wanted to convert to LECA (I have a lemon tree, 3 Calla lily, and a mint plant) and I have a lot of stuff in my Amazon cart that I want to get, but I need some questions answered and I'm also doing a lot of research and youtube watching before I buy anything. 1) How often do you use fertilizer or nutrient water for your plants in LECA and does these decision based on the plant watering needs, the directions on the fertilizer, or based on the LECA balls since they don't have any nutrients? 2) Is watering your plants with normal water (meaning water with no nutrients/fertilizer) different from watering your plants with nutrient water in LECA ? 3) Can I make my own zero waste fertilizer at home or is it better to buy them? Thank you!

I’m super new to using leca, and I started my plant dad journey a couple of months ago with propagating Basil. Hazel the Basil is doing a really good job, I transitioned her from water to a self-water planter with soil a little over a month ago, and she’s really flourishing drinking a max level of water every two days while in my windowsill. I bought a bunch of indoor plants over the past month, ferns, palms, and succulents mainly. My Areca Palm (Erykah) is not very happy in the self-watering planter, so I’m thinking about transitioning her into a nursery pot/ceramic planter after getting superthrive and the foliage-pro plant food. But I’d like to know how important getting the correct ph level is for this process? I’ve kept all my plants (except succulents) in self-water planters and only use cold filtered water. Hazel seems to love it but all the others seem pretty meh about their water and recent planter situation. Should I transition all the ferns and palms to leca and see wassup?

I watched this video to find out if the holes were actually necessary. You definitely answered that question. Thank you! I have another question that you touched on in another video. You briefly said that the roots will grow down into the water and those roots will be able to handle sitting in the water. Does that mean they won't rot?

Thank you Princess, thank you. I'm good to go in both areas you've spoken of. Where brown folks are concerned if we are slack, it will come back to haunt us in a very onry no, evil way. We already hurt, why add salt to a struggling wound. Wonder if they get that? Time wil tell. I heard by way of news that in some states where ballots were cast by mail, some disturbed person took the lot and cast it in a ditch. So that's going on. Also sometimes brown folk misfortunes are not always due to their own fault but by others whose hearts are black and care nothing but about themselves and their fortunes. YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS AND SPORT IT SO. Your locks are great. Have a blessed season and balance of the year. John 3:16-18. Yah, not a fan of deco pots no matter what they are, all of my plants sit in trays. Gotta watch that water.

Hey, question if you don’t mind asking. I started semi hydroponic 2 days ago using your video and advice as a guide. The issue I’m running into is...for the plants that have no quite “rooted” yet I put them in a 8oz mason jar with leca. The concern/ question is: would it be ok if I put the plant in a net pot with leca, then fill the jar up with leca right to where it meets the bottom of the net pot. Then fill with the nutrition water to the same level of where I think the root ends and leca begins
@meikahidenori
@meikahidenori Год назад
If the plant hasn't quite rooted it won't hurt to submerge those roots to get them started. Many cuttings are easily rooted out in water and don't mind growing in it beyond that phase. It's when the plant has existing soil roots that you want to keep some of them out of the water while it develops water roots but as long as there is no soil on the roots submerging in water won't harm them.

Hi! In trying to convert my Calathea Ornata right now, and since I know they're quite finicky I'm gonna leave it in plain (filtered) water for a couple weeks to ease the transition. I think they'll do well in LECA since they like humid environments and growing medium. Good luck with yours!

@@misslucario7278 thank you l hadn't thought of putting in water first so will do same and try the leca. Thanks for the info...x

I'm not sure you can grow *any* plant in LECA some plants seem to do better than others. Hoyas I know for sure do well in the system also all my Pothos, Philodendrons, and Monsteras like it too.

You mentioned algae and I do have that issue when it is in a glass container and the sun is hitting the glass. How do you, if it all, deal with the algae? I have to say that I am very lazy with drilling the holes. I do have the plastic pots more than glass and that has the drainage holes and allows me to see the roots, though they are sitting in another pot so I do have to take it out and see what is happening. Sidebar: Can you do a video on what types of plants can grow in leca/water/hydroponics? For example, I wanted to do this with a spider plant and was concerned if it was an option. Calathea too.

by the water, I will leave the drilling to Ernest. He knows what he is doing and I don't lol.

I usually just flush the plant with water as soon as I see the Algae and that's enough to get it out. I've also heard people flushing the container with a Hydrogen Peroxide solution as well.

hiya, are water bugs a real concern with leca? you mentioned it but not sure if it was more of a joke
@obaileyo

I’ve never had problems or heard of anyone who’s had problems with bugs in leca. most bugs need more organic decomposing material to survive, which doesn’t really occur with just leca :)

Kind of a joke but also found some little white bugs in a plant in LECA recently sooooooooo

Maybe someday voting will be done the right way. All in one day and in person with ID

Maybe try putting the plants that are in nursery pots in a saucer? That way it gets some water but not enough water to go bad? It might work. 🤷🏿‍♀️

thank you fellow virgo, I have been registered to vote for a long time. I'm going to go over to my polling place and vote for Biden, he's the only one qualified to vote for.

I don't understand why people in America need to register in order to vote. Like it's your right to vote and the state is supposed to ensure that you are able to make use of them. Therefore it's not logical to me (as a german where we don't need to register) as to why one has to register. It is just making it harder to vote for those of us who already have it tougher.
@obaileyo

considering the ideals of the US’s founding fathers, it’s not a design flaw. unfortunately, it was most definitely designed with the purpose of discouraging and disenfranchising particular votes in mind.

some people are not able to vote, such as convicted felons or new immigrants, that's why people need to register to vote.
@ILooveeuuu
@ILooveeuuu 3 года назад
@@goddess131 but that still doesn't make sense. Like in Germany you are automatically either eligible or not eligible to vote. Like as soon as you are eligible to vote you are "registered". And if you aren't allowed to vote... Well you can't. Like you won't be able to do postal votes etc. And if you go to the polling station (you are required to go to "your" polling station) you are on their lists. You identify yourself, they cross you off their lists etc. And off you go voting. If you go their and you aren't eligible to vote... Well you can't. Like why does the responsibility of registering to vote lie with the person who's right it is to vote. While it is the state's responsibility to make sure that you can make use of your right. The extra step of "registering" is unnecessary and should be done automatically by the government.
@goddess131
@goddess131 3 года назад
@@ILooveeuuu ok that's great, I agree with you. When one is eligible to vote they should be 'registered.' The voting system here has lots of flaws (obviously) that have to do with the history in the United States, for example Jim Crow laws which is a whole other can of worms. One other thing about 'registering' to vote here is, when one registers, they register either as a Democrat, Republican or Independent for example, how do you do that in Germany? Do you need to belong to a party? Or when you vote, can you choose any party? And can you choose any party at any election, or do you need to choose a party before the election?
