Lol i heard tht! Im a hs teacher. Ths is my first year and my LAST yr! Too much bullshit and fakeness. And i hate the senseless policies coming frm district. Countdown till may 2021.
@@crackedpoetgaming the school system isn't really the root of the problem in the US. Yes, it's part, but the MAJOR issue, the MAIN reason it's not effective, is the CULTURE. A culture that allows disrespect for authority, disrespect for fellow students, disrespect for their own parents who do NOTHING meaningful to instill discipline. THAT HAS TO CHANGE before ANYTHING else will mean anything at all.
In September 2017, I quit my teaching career for the EXACT same reasons. After 15 years in, I kept being told to stick it out for the retirement. I no longer wanted to be apart of a system that fails kids, fails good Teachers and that I couldn't change. I'm a middle aged white woman so don't take not having your voice heard personal. The whole system/process is demoralizing. Much happiness!
Amalgamate Why in tbe world would you tag such an ill-informed and mean-spirited comment to my statement?? The video nor I said anything negative about students. FYI- 16% of my students were Black Americans and they were not only the imost ntelligent critical thinkers, but they were also very respectful toward me. I left teaching because the system was not good or supportive of them. BTW- they were also quite patriotic. When I was in the military (Gulf War Veteran), I was surrounded by Black Americans who not only had my back- had this cou try"s back. My guess is you have never served this country or your community. You don"t have the heart.
First year teacher here at an alternative school and it’ll likely be my last year as well. Everyone says they need black male teachers but most black men are not going to endure all the things that come with being a teacher (low pay, buying your own supplies, being the “enforcer”) all in the name of being some positive role model mascot. Education in America is nothing but big business at the expense of low income children.
Margaret Garbincus it’s big business for those that run them. Fancy administrative positions with no purpose making more than teachers, alternative programs keeping students so they can get more funding and districts don’t have to deal with them. What other job gets away with making employees spend thousands of dollars on their own supplies?
WOMEN as teachers have been dealing with all the stuff that "black men are not gong to endure" in order t try to teach kids. Welcome to what SEXISM does to an entire profession.
I felt this so hard. I currently teach at a majority black & latino school in Houston and it's just...ugh. I came to make a difference in a school that needs teachers who care, but the system makes it impossible for me to do my job. My administrators don't know what works and what doesn't, and when I try to do what works, they reprimand me. And when I point out how they're wrong, they just get even madder LOL. So like, I'm moving to Sweden where I feel like I can teach AND be happy. It breaks my heart to leave my kids here in Houston behind, but it's like you said, the system is so messed up you don't even wanna be a part of it anymore because you know you can't make a difference no matter how badly you want to.
It's the same in the Foster Care system. It's not the children who makes it hard for a foster parent, it's the system. From the Judges on down.. (Not all, but the vast majority fit this category). The children are pawns in this cesspool of corruption. 😟
@@darkangel79413 Got a job at an international school through LinkedIn. You can also apply through the Swedish public employment agency. Honestly, though, their immigration agency is a total sh*t show right now. I came back to the US because of covid uncertainty, and haven't been able to get back since because of the immigration agency! I got a job, signed contracts, etc, last May, and my work permit STILL HASN'T BEEN PROCESSED a year later. It hasn't even been assigned a handler. Oh, and get this: because my would-be employer needed someone ASAP, the job offer was rescinded ages ago and around August last year, I emailed immigration to say "hey cancel my application for a work permit. Y'all have taken too long already and the employer rescinded the offer because they needed someone months ago!" And you know what? THEY STILL HAVEN'T EVEN CANCELLED MY APPLICATION.
I am not a teacher but I do work in the public school system as a sub paraprofessional in Brooklyn, NY & it is absolutely draining..I have experienced disrespect from teachers, administration, parents as well as the students because they pick up on how the adults treat us..And these schools DO NOT cater to the needs of the kids
How about the responsibility of the parents. If they are even have any at home. Because as a young black boy I didn't. Dad was absent and mom wasn't home when I woke up.
As a teacher myself, this is the most unfortunate thing I've seen. Race doesn't really matter as much, parental involvement is the most important factor for a students success and that is challenging in a single parent home. Homelife is something that the child will that with them to school and if that is poor then their academics will also suffer.
Well said. The system is broken because parents aren’t accountable for their children behavior. At fault, both the school system and parents are at equal level. Parents deny their kids behavior and the schools keep the worst teachers that get promotions
Thanks for sharing Monter. Yea...I taught on the East Side for 4 years. All I can say...keep the families and the city in prayer!🙏 It was truly an experience. There were a handful that were there to learn, and parents were involved, however...it just wasn't enough🤷♀️ Sad.
There needs to be more support for new teachers; too often it's sink or swim for rookies. I'm glad you found a career that makes you happy. Stay blessed!😉
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is truly unfortunate that you're not in classroom anymore. Our kids need to see Male role models like yourself in front of them everyday. But you're absolutely right. It's a systemic issue that runs back several generations. There needs to be true reform from within our communities to change the structure of our schools. I pray that you find your way back to education some how (doesn't have to be in the classroom) because your voice is so desperately needed.
This spoke to my soul! Teaching in an urban setting is stressful as a black educator because we see first hand how the system is and will continue failing students.
Is it schools failing studebts, or parents failing students? If a parent takes A child to McDonald's looking for rump roast and rice, was it McDonald's who made the mistake or the parent. Schools support parents and not the other way around. Time and Time again the research shows us that stable parents can send a child to a much less than stellar school asnd get a student who can read, write, and compute. The problem is not first what schools do. The problem is what and when the parents parent, when communities restrain themselves, and finnally how schools deliver their instruction. In that order. Children are watching parents go on tender dates, while themselves being exposed to God knows what on the internet, and sent to school sleepy the next day. Is it really the schoo? The momma shows up in a blonde wig and a Pink outfit and y'all say it's the schools fault that the child won't behave..... Because learning to read is anything other than discipline and practice 🤔🤨. If the child sees no restraint, disapline, and an unexpected wheelingness to practice at home, you can bet they will bring that attitude to school with them 🤐
Coach Toni, as a Black teacher, how can I get Black parents involved, I can count on one hand and have fingers left over the number of Black parents that show interest
I’m not an educator (auditor) but I can relate to waking up being so frustrated and not wanting to go to work. Like you, I’m a black man who graduated in the 00’s, with high expectations on changing society after college. One thing I’ve learned as I just turned 30 is there is no monetary value for a peace of mind. Blessing bro!
@@ruthcardona8734 i didn't mean to imply that. I am a teacher still in the grind too. I just meant that all too often the ones that can't face the challenge of teaching go admin instead of leaving, that's what I think is cowardly. It's brave to know it's not for you and face the uncertain future.
@@ll-nm4fw That's a lie..I've had know many teachers that hate teaching white because of behavior, disregard of authority, entitlement complex, etc. Your comment is ridiculous white students kill, bully etc. Asian students killed, too - just don't hear about! smh
I took my talents overseas to teach in education. It was one of the best decisions i ever made. I recommend any teacher to teach abroad. I'm from Chicago
Really? No matter what, I guarantee you that you more than likely touched one student who was grateful that you were their teacher. There are thousands of schools in this country but you believe that your talents are best used over in a country when you could have moved to another city. WOW!!!! THE SYSTEM IS NOT FAILING THE STUDENTS, THE TEACHERS WHO DON'T STICK AROUND TO FIGHT FOR THE STUDENTS FAIL THEM.
@@blackdiamond2977 Working with Chicago public schools was a nightmare. Most of these kids need parenting and i didn't sign up for that. It can be really difficult working with children in the urban community. To be honest, i always wanted to work with children in Africa. Yes, of course i touch many students but it wasn't enough. The school system doesn't care for their teachers or students. Alot of parents don't understand what we have to deal with in the system. I also left because i don't want to be in america ANYMORE
I'm an ex middle school teacher in AZ and I quit after 3 years. I couldn't keep giving out of my pocket, my mental energy, and dealing with the politics of leadership while in this body and voicing concerns for my students. I miss teaching however am MUCH HAPPIER OUT OF THAT SYSTEM! Much love to all of our teachers especially teachers of color out here!
ChaValiér N Sharps I’m curious what’s the next career move? I was studying to be a teacher and then I stopped. There was a real barrier there thinking about who I truly am... I’m a creative, a free spirit, a loving and affectionate being. That system is totally not for me.
@@eightyninetreasure if those things describe you I highly suggest steering clear of teaching in the USA! I taught at various types of schools with various models and it just ended up the same every time. I'm now in behavioral health working with kids and families from the other side of what I experienced in the classroom. All of my students had mild or severe behavioral, emotional, and academic issues before I could even think about teaching, so that's what I decided to do after finally accepting for myself that teaching wasnt good for my well being, my pocket, and seemed to be the least of my students worries. I'm enjoying it much better and feel more fulfilled.
I definitely can relate to your story. Until I stepped into a public school classroom as a teacher. I never in my widest stretch of imagination thought that any environment could be that chaotic. Some public schools are messy and chaotic and learning do not take place. I hated the job and prayed for deliverance everyday. One thing I did not do was walk out on the kids. I stayed until the end and got a non renewal because I told the administrators that the things in place were not working to manage kids’ behavior issues. The school cannot keep teachers beyond the first year. It is sad, so many kids are left behind in the public school system. I am a happy assistant professor and do not have to deal with behavior problems in my classroom at this point. The non renewal was a blessing!
@Kyle E Wow! Thank you for your information. I had no idea. I’m sorry that you had to endure all of that nonsense.I’ve heard the name “charter schools” but didn’t really think that much about how they operated. I have some research to do. You’ve given me a head start. Now, I know you’re referencing NYC charter schools. If they hire these individuals without proper credentials, do they at least give them a deadline as to when they are to be licensed or have endorsements? But I guess they ( the teachers )will just be wasting their time and money to only be fired. My goodness! You also bring up a valid point: I will take your word it, that charter schools all of sudden can transform low performing students into high performing students. This little bit of information really opened my eyes. Again, thank you. I will be researching further!
I was a substitute and I couldn’t bear being a teacher!!! Everyone wants you to educate and discipline there kids!!!! I feel sorry for the teachers, they are so under paid!!!!!!
I substituted once, and by the time the day was over I had written up everyone in the class! 😂😂 They asked me not to return to finish out my assigned week. Aaaahahahahaha!! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂 Shucks those teenagers were demons and devils in disguise and I didn't lose any sleep over my dismissal! It was... See ya, wouldn't want to be ya! ,🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂
I really think the schools in urban communities are failing our children by design...so is parenting these days failing by design of liberal politicians...that lie and really want to keep the black community down and depended on them for scraps...and hand outs...section 8...food...all are designed to keep the black community poor and dependent and voting them in office for scraps....all poor black people vote democrat...this education failure is designed to keep the poor black vote on the plantation...

Thank you for this video 🙏🏼😊 this was exactly what I needed . I was thinking what was best for me as well. That really opened my eyes when you said “with happiness no one can take that away from you” that’s so true 💯Keep up the good videos !
You took the words right outta my mouth!!! 1st year teacher. 5th grade Math, Science, Social Studies. None of my Masters classes prepared me for what I have experienced in my classroom. Daily, I have to remind myself that I’m needed and that I’m not meant to correct every behavior or deficit. Many of my students don’t know they don’t know and the ones that do, don’t want it from me. Not sure how long I’ll be in the classroom, but I know it won’t be long. Thanks for your transparency!
Correcting students. Yeah I tried to get the kids acting professional. They disliked me and like the previous teacher cause I demanded them to learn. Kids come to school for a social life and that's the biggest joke at school.
This was a powerful video it’s awesome you kept in touch with the kids even after changing your circumstances it’s definitely a systemic issue ... 😔 I’m happy for you finding your happiness again 🙏🏾 that’s dope! And I’m so excited I found another Chicago vlogger! Keep killing it your channel is dope
I really appreciate your video. I’ve been teaching for 8 years and I intend on making this my last year teaching. Nervous about the “walk of faith” part so thank you for sharing your story. #encouraging
I taught English overseas for a while and loved it . My mom wanted me to become a teacher in DC. She told me about a program at a university that basically pays you to go to school and gives you a stipend . The catch is you have to teach in DC/Maryland in poor neighborhoods for 3 years . I decided to go into tech instead . No thanks
I'm so happy that you've found something that makes you happy! Most of my teachers in Chicago were the same way. They would literally read novels and give us worksheets and pages to read every day year after year after year. I vowed to not be a teacher like that. I've been teaching for 13 years now and one thing I've learned is that the right school makes all the difference. I moved out of state and joined a wonderful community that valued teachers first and invested in our growth. That school changed my professional trajectory. I love teaching and learning.
Wow! Thank you for this! I’ve been a sub and taught long term as a teacher for a bit & learned how terrible the system is & this really helped me to stick with what I know and to continue following my path as an artist
From one educator to another, thank you for your service! I hope you take joy in knowing that your former students are better because of it. We each do what we can with who God blessed us with. And we do WHAT we can. After that many of us have to move on for the sake of our own sanity/health and to make sure not cheat others close to us. Yo, life on a "quarter tank" is a trip right?! And it's risky when one sees how far they'd have to go on that old public school road... The purpose was one of service. As for you it still is! I pray you reach others in a powerful way thru your service to them now in the photography arena! Be blessed my brotha
I just looked at your website and you have amazing reviews. Cheers to you for leaving your job and following your passion. I'm also glad you are still mentoring. You can always still teach but not in a classroom. Thank you for your transparency. God bless you sir!
Wow thank you so much for this video! Thank you for speaking to all of us about finding your happiness. I’m a teacher and seriously, the people I worked with especially the administration in several different school districts have left me feeling dead inside. It’s like they have a secret society. You are #1 and you deserve Happiness! Blessings to all teachers who are trying out there!!!!!
Love your video man. I'm a year and half sub and a black male. I was considering transition to teaching, but was recently offered a great job. In my heart I know me leaving teaching is not good but I need the money so bad. It hurts to know your fighting a losing battle but a side of me says keep fighting.
Thank you for your sincerity and courage. Thank you for sharing your story with us, I can tell you that most of us (teachers) have felt in this way. It's frustrating how education is seen only as a business or as a number in statistics. No one seems to really care. It's really frustrating when you are trying to create some change but everyone is going in a different direction. I have come to realize that teaching a big group doesn't really allow you to get to meet everyone's needs, but tuttoring one on one or a small group is a great way to help. I suggest you to join an after school program or volunteer at a school in a your free time, that way you will be able to create change at least in one, two or three people, and that really means a lot! Give yourself a chance, teaching is a constant battle, but the lessons you learn are priceless!!!!
Great video! As a first year teacher, I started the year so motivated. Being around so many peers who are only going through the motions really opened my eyes to why the students aren’t motivated. But, I know I was called to teach so I’m pushing to move into administration so that my voice (a voice of the students) will be heard!
I normally don't comment on videos but I stumbled across yours and it's helping me. It's 2022 and I'm currently at a crossroads. I'd never thought I would be the one to consider walking away from my students but walking away is what's best for them because students don't deserve a teacher that doesn't have the desire or passion to teach anymore. I've only been teaching for 5 and a half years and I see exactly what you're talking about. I cannot change a system that was never really designed for us. It takes a lot more out of us than most people realize. Thanks for your honesty and vulnerability.
It's my first year teaching and I feel you on this. Being a teacher, even for this short amount of time really reveals how jacked up the system is and confirms how it doesn't meet the needs of our black and brown students. Glad you did what you had to do for yourself and didn't feel obligated to stay even tho you were unhappy.
Thanks Jasmine...yeah, it was tough leaving. I actually stayed an entire year before I eventually left, just trying to decided what to do. You have to find your peace and happiness. I definitely miss my students, I miss being around students in general, but I'm very happy nowadays. Good luck with everything!!
Mack Julion, happiness and health are very important. When I taught public school, I could tell that I was aging badly. I went to bed praying not to die in my sleep, that was how stressed I was. I am glad that I got a way out of the public school classroom.
Jasmine, Public Schools, paid for with public funds, meet the needs of the Republic, in terms of human capital production. Parents meet the needs of students 🙄
Good for you, Mack Julion. I admire that you chose not to settle and just slide by as a teacher. I had a very similar experience. I was teaching full time, was feeling completely powerless to change the system, and I quit without a job lined up. I subbed for a bit, but recently found a job as a teacher in an intensive outpatient behavioral health program. It's still rough for other reasons, but it fits me, my values, and my passions so much better. I don't have that powerless feeling anymore. I get to work with students one-on-one and help them find more productive ways to behave... and I hope that it helps them cope when they get back to the oppressive environment at their school.
Many of my family members are/have been teachers and it only gets harder every year. Good luck to you. I hope you are able to fulfil your goals and dreams.
I love being a Substitute Educator. So far, I've taught, 1st -8th Grades. I don't want to deal with the Administration or Other Teachers' Drama . This is why I Sub.
This is my first year as a sub and I find it to be exhausting. My expectations were too high. Overall, its not bad if you have good students at the right school IMO!!!
Thanks for the comment. I am sharing this on FB. My aunt in law still sub teaching for CPS. Are you willing to set up a 501 C and teaching photo to the children and set up a mentoring program? THis is the reason alot of parents are moving to home schooling.
Your story resonates with me because I currently teach in the exact system... in a different country. I've been trading my happiness and it's really draining. Time for a change. Thanks for the video!
Giving me hope bruh, appreciate you sharing. Most folk don’t understand, the profession is incredibly noble and it’s NEVER the kids that make it hard. It’s the environment, culture, and your colleagues that end up making it unbearable.
Hey Mack! I loved the video and I feel your pain. Also, I glad that you found your happiness!!! I taught in CPS for 40 years and understand what you mean. I fought like a bear and was vicious on issues to protect uplift anything which benefited the kids. I changed the lives of scores of students but also couldn't reach some. Believe it of not, I'm still on the quest, in another capacity. Thanks for sharing!!!
I felt that 7 seconds morning feeling. There was times last year I would wake up, get dressed, get to my call then call in with an excuse. I just didn't have the energy.
As a Biology teacher for 25 years, my longevity stems from the motive of impacting learning with personal and social responsibility. However, the following issues must be managed to attract more teachers, especially African-American males in the classroom. 1) Higher salaries (50k or more the first year and annual raise ) 2) Adminstration that reflects the community ( No cowards, but courageous to make changes) 3) Parent involvement 4) Student accountability (behavioral standards and academic expectations) 5) Mentorship ( A Curriculum that involves students building self-esteem and skill set through entrepreneurship and post secondary educational pursuits)
Thank you for being truthful about what students are dealing with. Most do not understand how broken the education system is OR how those who only want the best for their students are downtrodden after only a few years. The education system needs a total and complete overhaul.
Since schools are funded by property taxes the difference between the "kid college" and the school where you taught was the quality of the parents. The success of the parents. The achievements of the parents. The discipline of the parents. The focus of the parents. The priorities of the parents.
Peace everything you said is so true!! I work in south Dallas I’m from NJ and I had the same experience in Jersey it’s a sad situation, feel bad for the students too!
I agree 100%. I sub in Chicago schools and that's hard enough. Also do photo and video so we're almost the same person. Wish I found this video sooner but please continue to help our children
I have 25 years in CPS. I wish you would have channeled your frustration and organized before you left. The AFT Black Caucus meets monthly to support African American teachers in CPS. If you decide to come back seek support. You can make real changes if you want to. Best blessed brother.
Could not have been more disappointed in CPS teachers walking out in their latest strike, after the mayor gave you everything you asked for. That was a slap in the face to the community. I now despise the teacher's union.
I worked in Chicago Public Schools. The money is good, but the system is not the best. All school systems are not perfect, but some school systems are better than others. I work in Washington State. I love my school, but it is not perfect. We are working hard and the kids are getting smart. Peace!
I teach in WA! This is my first year and I love the actual teaching part, but there are definitely things in this video I relate to. That scares me because I do love my job and don’t want to get into a place where I feel discouraged.
Lawrence Brown I’m in federal way so it sounds like we’re pretty close. It’ll be nice to have the summer to recover a little bit. I’m lucky that my principal and vice principal are pretty amazing and really encouraging so I feel like there’s a lot of hope.
I had a teacher who stopped teaching in high school back in 1972. Someone let the principle know. He took some kind of action. That teacher started teaching again. Back in the day, when we had dedicated principles who weren't just paper pushers and forrmer coaches.
Don’t ever doubt yourself. I know you haven’t up to now...but let it sink in that you know how to create your own balanced life. And that is very admirable. You’ll also be a great father! Total respect...

How can he be a good mentor he's selfish as hell. He said it in the video he decided to put himself first and follow his own happiness. That's borderline narcissistic. Kids need to be taught perseverance for when times get tough and and how to deal with everyday problems so things don't get that tough in the first place. This guy doesn't doesn't know how to do any of that.
@@lunacron Most young people are taught to put themselves first (thanks Obama). All about ME. Just listen to them talk. Ir's always ME first. Me and so and so. I was taught to put and have consideration for others first above myself. NOT ANYMORE.

The courage to leave behind the wrong for the right sets you apart from the fearful, and this man is courageous as hell.
@@alano_onala Striving to help others get to that level? He was in a position to do just that. He could have been a good example to hundreds of children, by teaching them how to deal with a bad situation, but he abandoned them. If he's willing to abandon his entire class, what makes you think he would stick around for a single child. He didn't even have enough drive to the last the entire year and that's extra stupid because that probably means he can never go back, in case a position at a good school or possibly a college were to ever become available. You should never burn a bridge. I'm sorry, but he's just plain old selfish or possibly even narcissistic and so are you if you think that way. Long story short things got difficult and he just gave up. That's the last person that a child with abandonment issues needs, someone who will just give up and go the split second there's a problem.
I did talk to couple teacher, many shared similar stories with me, then I talk to the students, and I came to interesting solution: compulsory schoo just to 5th grade, then you can either continue or join the workforce, many young people cannot sit in one place for long, they need simply go to work, they could always go back to school when they would realize they need it. To allow the young boy join the work force the minimum wage should be abolished , otherwise nobody will hire they until they will get proper skills
Unnecessary on your part.... There are many students who have dad's and still have issues. I suppose that time of year is an issue but father's day comes n goes rather quickly. If you're missing a parent in your life then you suffer with that everyday.... doesn't matter whether or not it's a holiday.
I can understand why a lot of teachers quit! Both the state and Federal governments are running the public schools. The schools are under a lot of pressure to perform up to state and Federal standards and abide by state and Federal laws. The teachers are under a lot pressure to perform up to state, Federal, and school district standards, policies, and procedures. They also don't have the time to deal with special needs kids; as well as give them the individualized attention that they need. They have to teach what they are told to teach; and they have to do it within a certain time frame. Teachers also have to take a lot of flack from the parents. They also have to grade papers and do lesson plans. They also have non-teaching duties such as supervise the students at lunch; as well as when they get on and off the school buses. If there is child abuse, they have to report it. No matter how hard these teachers try, it's still not good for the school administration, the state, and the Federal governments. Their whole attitude is "Well you're in the wrong profession," or "Well then this isn't for you." Teaching is a extremely demanding profession. You should weigh the pros and cons of being a teacher you decide to become one.
