WACHA POMBE The scene opens up with an aerial view shot of the 'State of Kibera.' The evening sun crawling it's claws through the crevices of the shanties. Kibera has its praises and inadequacies. Different ages dotting it's landscape, some being advanced in years shaffling their feet in a gait with a walking cane and others welcomed to the world. In the mid- range ages are some who tossed aside high school life like a painful memory brushed in sepia tones. Abel was such. Quite elated, freed from the chains of what seemed to tie down his movements and wild experiments. He was now free to swim into the murky waters. Eager to test what life had in store. He had a lot of time in his hands, if only he could trade with those who seemed very occupied , darting from place to place to eke out a living. One can imagine the events that played in his head. Probably there were explosions in his brain. Good ideas I presume, in that buzz of electricity. " Buda! badala ya kukaa hapa, naskia kuna club mpya imefungliwa, twendeni tuicheki" " Sina form, twende" "Pia mimi" quipped another. All sung in the same chorus. Hundreds of conversations told in loud voices and hip-hop music dominate the atmosphere. Abel and his team warm their way between guys to catch a spot as well as order drinks. " Sasa madam, nilete chupa mbili". They said with much confidence as if tons of money was available to sustain their lifestyle. Good thing they had whetted their appetite with cheap liquor like Sapphire. " Madam niletee...Grrrrrrrr! Grrrrrrrr! Abel's phone danced in his hands, with its polyphonic ringtone going into a rant as if an annoyed rattle snake. He scooped it and spoke into it. The music muffled his voice but with his lighted facial expression, it was obvious new plan had been hatched. " Aaah! nawapenda sana. Asante sana kwa kunileta kwa club lakini nimechoka kukunywa vitu za pesa kidogo, nimeitiwa wine ya pesa mingi kwa hivyo juu ya hiyo stori adios muchachos." In a flash, he was a puff of smoke. Smoke that twisted artistically and smelt of abandonment. He was in his cousins cubby hole, in the heart of Umoja Inako, prepared to devour his expensive foe i.e wine. " Yaani cuzo umenitoa Kibera ukuje unipatie pombe kwa chupa ya dawa?" " Bro, usionge sana kabla hujaingia mechi, wewe tulia, kata hizi vitu wewe tutaongea after chupa mbili." Chupa mbili, you must be joking, wewe unijui? Even in his half liquor stained state, he managed to utter such. He hungrily gobbled down the first shot, and the second and the third punctuating every shot with stories and soaked in laughter. His shaky hands could not afford another shot. Wine kickied in. Mixing with all he had taken earlier on. Eyes swiveling towards the back of his head in a distressed sense. Everything in the house changed figure in a blink of an eye. " Wacha nirudi Kibich sasa, this is enough" In an unbalanced attempt to rise, his feet was noodles his head an anvil. Horses were galloping, thunderously at his sockets. He plunged head fast into the coffee table sinking his teeth into the cloth embedded on the top ricochetting to the floor. " Eish uko sawa, ama you need kutilia kidogo?" " Zii niko sawa. Twende tuu unipige push kwa stage uniweke kwa Niso minieleke mtaa." " Minaona nikama umelemewa, ungetulia tulia ishuke, lakini kama unaona ukosawa we zidi" Like a heavy log, Abel was dropped in the front sit. His cousin paid for his sit and the vacant one next to the driver and instructed him to take him to Central Business District. The uneven uncarpeted road heaved him from side to side. He was shaken by the hiccup that came up his throat issuing forth a breath laced with the smell of alcohol. A sudden stinging urge to pee took over his body. His bladder was full and was about to burst it's banks if he took no action. " Manze Dere ukipita hapa najinyorea. Naona choo hapa JIAM, hii kwa round about. Niweke! Niweke! hapa sahii na hii jam" he shrieked out. He staggered his way to the ladies lavatories. The floor was tiled and discoloured. There was a cracked mirror affixed to a wall. Nearby were two women minding their own business but yelpee upon seeing Abel. " Waaaa! what the hell?" " Yeah, what the hell. Pia mimiimi nimekazwa Kama nyinyi. Ni noma. Wapi urinals? An awkward silence hovered above them. It was obvious there was no uriinal but Abel's urge clouded his thinking. " Mimi ni customer na hufai kuwa hapa. Toka! Toka!" He was escorted to the gents and promptly helped himself. Liquor stenched the windowless room, as with every splash of urine against the wall-hung urinals acted out as his lullaby. He drited into unconsciousness, the world was a blur, random people seemed to float around his pool of thoughts. He was the great philanthropist, dishing out his valuables in a spirit of kindness. His wallet, watch, shoes etc. Abel lazily rolled open his eyes. Screwing them with the inside of his palm. He felt light and it dawned on him why. All that act of philanthropy that danced out in his dreams was actually real only that to the outside world he was being robbed. He dragged himself outside brushing off the server who claimed he was not paid. A blanket of darkness lingered within the city. He set out to walk to Railways to catch his bus. He weaved through the streets unusually slow like someone under hypnosis, weight of travel clearly weighed on him, so he took an hours rest in one of the public benches. By the time he found a bus that plied his route, it was 9.45pm, Curfew was imposed in Kibera due to the high rate of crime. By around 10pm, the streets were swept clean, no soul was to be found roaming outside by the men in blue. Street lights dotted the 'state' with their lights washing over the in roads. They welcomed Abel as he trudged on, one step forward and another back. His footsteps seemed to echo throughout the desolate street. "Yo Irush, kuna mahali munaingia tena?" In Abel's mind, he thought this was another escapade from his friends. Irush motioned to him to be quiet. " Hapana bana, munataka kuenda muniache, tumekataa maji na nyinyi halafu muniache" Abel was oblivious of the fact that he arrested himself. It was a case where a thief turned himself in before fourty days. The police were content that he made their work painless. " Usiogope kijana, hatukuwachi, ingia. Karibu sana." He was satisfied to know they were heading out for another 'drinking spree'. A slight nudge momentarily brought him back to reality, making sense of where they were. He had never been in a police cell before. The walls were dull and paint had started peeling off. Thick stale hung over the room, a cocktail of bad breath and sweat. The unsettling smell set him on the edge but that did not matter, all he wanted was to call to the universe and promise to do good things when released. " Irush mambo ya pombe mimi nimemalizana nayo. It's a wrap. Sikuwai fikiria ninaweza lala kwa police station." In the wake of October, three weeks after Abel was netted, Irush walks up to him with another plan. "Buda nilikua nataka kuchukua maboyz hapa nimeangukia plan safi, nataka niwapeleke kwa club lakini wewe uliacha pombe, so aina mambo" " Eeeh! Mimi nilisema niliwacha pombe, wewe uliskia wapi?" Irush and his boyz slip in among the crowd. Some drinks later, they got what they craved for, a feeling of elation and a burst of confidence. They fed from each other's stories chuckling in laughter. " Lakini Buda kuna time niliingia South B na maboyz walinivuruga. Walinihanda wakaniingia mfuko, wakachukua my cash. " Wait, Irush, maboyz walinivuruga, maboyz wadosi wa South B na wewe ni wa Kibich?" " Bana" " Buda twende kwa hao maboyz sahi" " Unawajua?" " Eeh! Wanastay hapo karibu Mariakani". " Buda twende sahi" Irush was quite perplexed. He wondered how Abel mustered such courage in a whim. While on transit, he stared at him in awe. Probably, he was the brother he never had. Anger flowed through Abel, it's smell bile. " Nionyeshe hao vijana wako wapi, hakuna kijana wa Kibera anaweza guzwa nikiwa hapa" The residence was situated in a police band. They quickened their pace, crunches of gravel crying behind them. " Respect is about to reign" . He mouthed those words in silence. Pounding on the door, Irush shouted, "Fungua! The door flung open with an annoying creak following it. Even before he was given the chance to meet his visitors, Irush yelled " Niaje jo! wewe ulinichapa juzi bana ulikuwa unafikiria hatutapatana, nimecome hata na boy wangu" Now, the next 15 minutes was an ordeal never told be forgotten. They were beaten to a pulp. Irush was mean with his words. He failed to mention that the law caught him on the wrong side and was manhandled by a policeman. Both paid the price, the policeman's agile movements tore the two apart. They walked away hurriedly, their tongues soaked in tastes of blood. On their way home, they were at a loss of words. It was a moment of reflection. The type that leads to a new way onwards. " Buda" uttered Irush. " Situingie club tupige mbili bana tujiambie pole" " Unaujinga sana Irungu, hii pombe imefanya karibu tuuliwe sahi halafu unasema turudi, mimi nimewachia pombe?" Well, it was another chapter being young and stupid. Year marked in their history.
