I would bite off my own arm to be able to travel with you, even though I fully realise these experiences are only possible solo - but your energy, the reality of your problems and frustrations, your excitement at new projects - it is just inspiring how awesome you are. Not a walking advertisement for hiking gear with a permafrost smile like so many RU-vidrs, but an actual human, with adorable stubborn doggos (I have a beagle, so I know what's it like to hike with a dog that prefers to run around the zip code area) and a fantastic sense of solitude. I cannot wait for this upcoming hike vlogs.
One of the reasons I like traveling alone, I can change my travel plans anytime I want. This sounds like you will have a great adventure if this works out.
So looking forward to seeing your Swedish adventure! Yes Endurance is a fantastic book, if you look for a RU-vid Channel called History Hit they are currently on an expedition searching for the wreck of Endurance under the ice, take a look it is facinating and there is lots of information on the expedittion as well. Glad you made your journey home safely, have a great time seeing your Family again. Stay Safe.
Always enjoy your journey and videos. I remember watching the Palin "Around the World "videos years ago and recently, a video on Shackleton. Great stuff!! Explorers of that time period were crazy!!
I always so enjoy your vlogs, your are such a good storyteller that keeps it real…Thank you for the Endurance recommendation. I read the book some years ago about the expedition…I’’m currently following the search team on Endurance 22 who are on the ice in the Weddel sea looking for the ship. The Sweden hike sounds amazing, can’t wait to see your adventures along the trail. All the best Maui, Odessa & Linka
I can add to your recommendation about Alfred Lancing's "Endurance". It's a great book! A gripping story of survival in the harshest conditions in such a remote part of the world with no modern methods of communication. I loved it! I also started reading "South" which is Shackleton's own account of the journey but that's a much harder read (he was definitely more of an explorer than a writer!)
If you're going up into the Fjällen in Sweden during wintertime, make sure to plan ahead, there can be some pretty strong snowstorms up there, get a good tent (look at Hilleberg Soulo, a sturdy tent that can stand against wind and up through snow). Once a storm hits, all you see is white. Also an Inreach or similar rescue device to contact mountain rescue, there is no guarantee that you will reach a cabin on the trail. There is actually a few good videos on the trail and what to expect. In the summertime there are boats across the lakes, but you could probably walk over them in the wintertime, ice is probably pretty thick at the time when you're going. Just remember to bring "Isdubbar" with you before you go out on the ice - and also learn to use them. I wish you good luck and happy trails. (Michael Palins 80 days is awesome)
Funny! I was thinking as you were talking about exciting stories “she might like Endurance” then you said that it was next on your list! It’s one of my all time favorite survival adventure stories! You might also like Alone on the Ice by David Roberts
Beautiful. Plans are made and plans get changed. Happy you made a decision to return home and start something fresh. I believe the dogs will be happier in a snow trek adventure. When I am on long car drives I enjoy listening to murder mysteries. Trying to solve who done it? 🤔 Keep the vlogs coming. Happy Trails. 🤠
What a journey! Really looking forward to your next adventure. You mention not having a warm enough sleeping bag, if you already own a couple of sleeping bags you can double up by putting one inside the other. They work even better if you have the zips on the opposite sides as it protects the cold air getting in through the zips better. I often do this with thinner bags as my duck down bag can be a bit too warm to take sometimes. Being too warm can be just as bad as being too cold sometimes. It's great to have all the best and latest kit but if you're on a budget like most of us then sometimes you got to make do with what you have. All the best from the UK.
I am glad that you had a great time visiting Portugal and Spain and that your trip back to Estonia went smoothly! Best wishes on your training and prep for the hike!
I enjoyed the book "Project Hail Mary" - thank you for your tip, i will listen to yours on the next trip .-) i loved to watch your experience and good to hear about your new powerful hope :-) love to see you soon in sweden (I've been there two years ago in autum and enjoyed the start of the winter in lappland
have you any suggestion, top10 list or something like this for hiking routes in estonia, latvia and lithuania? (video idea?) I'll do my next holyday (june) in this area
The journey home is always the quickest…! Now you're back, the film of "Shackleton", featuring Kenneth Branagh, is well worth watch too, if you can find a copy. It is so well acted and believable. Good luck!
And, Matt Day, the Australian actor, plays a really good parts as Frank Hurley, the photographer. It was his photos (every bit as iconic as Ansel Adams) that brought the journey home to everybody - it was the first photo-blog, if you like! In the film he (the character) claims his family-motto is "Find a way, or make one!" In other words, never be defeated. It's perfect - go do it!
Glad you got home safely. I personally love to drive but am also NOT a fan of the cost of fuel. I hope the Ukrainian war does not hinder your hiking plans. Thank you for sharing your adventures. I look forward to seeing more.
Maiu, Endurance is an excellent read, I read it many years ago. Another adventurous book to read on your next adventure is Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum. He did it in the late 1890s.
I am so excited to see your journey on the Kungsleden, I have never watched footage of someone doing it in winter! very jealous haha.. this vlog was brilliant, amazing storytelling and the dogs playing with the snowflakes in Poland was too cute!
@@isaginationchannel I would think yes. But ofc you know her better :) Just take her with you when you train for the hike and with a nice warm jacket she should do just fine. And if she does get tired, she's small enough to have ride on the sled ;)
the photographs from that expedition are amazing.. and what Shekleton accomplished is unbelievable. no that all said.. you trip was very cool. great stuff.. < J
I'd say "quit" is a harsh word as your integrity and life are quite an inspiration to watch unfold, a true wanderlust. Id say your just always flipping the page into new chapters in the book of life. Being a traveller for 20 plus years i can relate to your stories. Its good you have a place to center yourself at home in Estonia. Yes the world is on fire from being bogged down by Covid and you being close to the war (gas $ 😬), its best to get back to your roots and simple things. Best of luck. Watching. Cheering. Learning. ❤✌🙏 P.S. im also getting European yogurt ads on your video now 😄
I read the original book 'South' by Ernest Shackleton decades ago. It is one of the most impressive examples of perseverance and resourcefulness in recorded human history. I'm wondering what Lansing changed in his retelling of the story. I thought you would have an appropriate sleeping bag from your Fjällräven Polar experience; maybe not. I'd loan you my customized North Face VE-25 expedition tent if we were geographically colocated but I'm sure the cost to ship it from here to Estonia would exceed even the high value of the tent.
The sleeping bag in Polar was indeed awesome, but we only got to use it, along with the tent. But don't worry, I'll be borrowing/renting the bag and the tent a bit closer ;)
Hi Maiu, given the books you are raving about in this video I think you would enjoy Mawson's Will by Lennard Bickle. An amazing story of courage and endurance and Antarctic exploration. (It is on Audible.)
Thank you for this video! ... yes, terrible gasoline prices ...(and a lot more terrible things) ... thanks to this special crazy russian lonesome old man :( Greetings from Hamburg/Germany, Dietmar, DL4HAO
You have me stumped, your video has you in the right side of your van but I thought the driver's seat was on the left side, so I am confused. I drove in Germany and Italy and they drive on the right side of the road and so did Spain, France and Greece.
To me snow is Mother Nature covering up all man's faults and garbage. I enjoy the snow. I wish that from October to 1st of May had nothing but snow. I love my dogs but hate when the outside thaws and the dogs get covered by mud.
I was already back in Estonia when the war started. I did pass Poland on my way to Portugal in November when the Belarus-Poland border issue was at it's hottest and that made me worry a bit, but nothing happened and I was completely safe.
It was already high before the war and the sanctions, I think it's mostly taxes that probably come from the climate crisis reaction so I can't really whine too much :D But yes, I'm waiting where the prices will go with the sanctions as well...
