Here's a nice cheap mod: The clips that hold the rear part of the gas tank, put smallish zip ties to them. Makes it a lot easier to pull the clips out. I have an r80 too. I posted a walk around video on month or so ago on my youtube page...which I just watched and for some reason have the gas line disconnected on the right side... weird. Also I have since ditched the stock side stand for a brown side stand... so much better. Highly recommend getting a brown side stand

That’s a really good idea with the tank clips, I might do that. What’s a brown side stand in it sure I’ve heard of that?

@@HodgeAutomotive Brown stand is the name of the product. It's a pretty nice after market option for airheads. Mounting for the monolever is different than the twin shock airheads. It mounts to the rear engine bolt and a clamp to the frame in front of the engine bolt mounting location. On twin shock airheads the front mount is to the exhaust header instead of the frame. The brown stand location (the end of the stand when retracted is right behind your footpeg) makes it much easier to extend and retract than the more forward located stock stand. Hope this was clear.

@@Thunder_Bear_mg just looked it up, it seems to be aimed at airheads 1970-84 as their side stands weren’t great, mines a 92 and the stands not too bad to be honest, it is in an awkward place though, I don’t think I can easily get a brown side stand in the uk but there’s other similar options I’ll have to check out, thanks for the info you’ve added another part to my list! Haha

@@HodgeAutomotiveit is true that the brown was technically only made for airheads up to 84 but you can make it work. You gotta mount the front mounting point to the frame instead of the exhaust. I used an r65 exhaust clamp because it is a smaller diameter clamp and it’s close enough to work. I’ll post a video on my channel of it. Post here again when that is done.

Poor BMW. Don't need to drain tank to take it off. Zip ties? K&Ns, 😞 Yes you need a strainer on a 40 year old bike. NOT in the tank, inline afterwards. Lots of water, stones, shakey shakey, rattly rattly for a half hour or more. Can epoxy fill, but if no leaks, just really mechanically clean it.

I drained the tank because it was full of rubbish and rust. They aren’t K&N’s they’re DNA filters. Why do they make a strainer screen for inside the tank if you don’t need one? It’s a standard BMW part, which seems to filter much better than every aftermarket strainer I’ve fitted after the tank. I wouldn’t put stones inside my tank….

Whats the tires you got on it please. I am after a set of these for mine airhead. Did you have to mod the brace between front forks in anyway or does the tire clear it no problem.

Off the top of my head they’re called victory TT classics, I can get the sizes for you tomorrow as im not with the bike now, but he’s they rub lots on the fork brace, I’ve ground a lot of it out and it still rubs, they’re also only speed rated for 92mph so expand a lot causing the rubbing. Im changing mine in the next couple of weeks and there’s still life in them so if you’re in the UK and want to pick them up or pay delivery you can have them mate

@@HodgeAutomotive Thanks for getting back to me. Let me know please when you are changing yours, I will be happy to take you on your offer and get those off you as I am still building mine. I am in the UK.

@@HodgeAutomotivefork brace is on backwards. In fact the calipers technically should be on the front side of the fork lowers.
