I returned the REL T9x subwoofer. Want to know why? Watch this video. This is my final review and the final video I will be making on the REL T9x. I've tested it for a few weeks now - and I've reached my conclusion..although it has been very drawn out.
The Rel T9x subwoofer has the following specifications:
Quick specs overview
300w AB amplifier
No DSP on-board - signal feeds straight into the sub
10 inch active driver and 10 inch passive
High level and LFE inputs on the back
High level via the Speakon connector as opposed to bare speaker wire
Auto on/off switch on the back
0/180 degree phase switch
You can learn more about this subwoofer and other subwoofers I have reviewed in the video.

I gave it a like, but disagreed with much of it, based on personal experience. REL’s don’t go as low as most, it’s true, but I happen to like what it does to the presentation.

@@healthynutster I agree, a lot is snake oil. Like rels expensive high level cable upgrade. I think the reason they don't go as low is they are better at picking up low frequency detail. And this is what they mean when they say musical. Subs either slam or have higher fidelity. Its not to say the t9 can't do theater though. I hear that all the time. Personally I have no complaints with what the T9i can do for LFE output. Also another point to consider for the reviewer is the main speakers are quite small? So for music do you have the crossover on the sub set quite high for low/high level in? Mine only covers 40hz (I have large floorstanders) so lower for 2 channel, vs LFE which is obviously up to 120hz.

Hello [young] Man, You don't need a million pound special microphone. We don't listen to music with special microphones, we listen to music with something far more sophisticated, our ears, brains and even our eyes that have a psychological impact on our perceptions. The question we want answered by a reviewer is their opinion on which sounds best, or grades of that question re various aspects of the sound v other gear that's available and we're hoping that gear will emerge that is superior at a lower cost, e.g. a £1k sub that trounces all/most £5k subs, ...that's the dream, but failing that we want to know what's the best bang for our buck v our taste and reviewers that we trust have similar tastes help us to shorten the journey by identifying exceptional gear that we can short-list. Does this snake oil taste good v other snake oil? Does it make my ears tingle and fizz in a good way? Is it a complete waste of space, time and money? Your review has left me more confused.

I think the issue here is, you're an SP customer, not an SQ customer. You need slam for movies, while the T9x does do it to an extent, it doesn't to the extent of say SVS in the same price bracket. What it does do which the SVS cannot, is blend into your main speakers so much so, that the sub is impossible to localise to the point it simply sounds like an extension of your own speakers. The REL's are so much faster, there's no bloat at all but the downside is less extension. The T9x is for music/movies, if you want this but with more gut punching slam (extension) like the SVS, you have the Series S like the S510, but they're £2k. Sound amazing though, even more speed, they make even tiny speakers sound 10 times their size but you get that real deep bass for theatre as well but with all the delicacy of a speaker. I'm an SQ customer which is why I like REL. Maybe you should try and get a review on the S510, see if that does it for you?

I have the REL tx9 set up for 2 channel audio and I really like it. I had a Sunfire perfect 10 before that gave out after 17 years that I really loved. It had much better extreme lows but besides that I like the sound of the REL much better. I tried a SVS SB-3000 and never heard a sub that I hated so much! It was just loud obnoxious. I hated it so much I was wondering if I had a defective unit because of how much rave that sub had. I would say its would be hard to beat the REL for accuracy at its price point. Its take some time to dial in but once you get it. It’s very enjoyable.

Yes the placement was crucial to it took a bit of trial and error to find the best position for frequency response then settng the crossover cutoff point so it played under the main speakers lower roll off then set the gain so it disappears another thing the upgrade cable would definitely work I made my own from some good quality speaker cable I had sitting dormant also the mains cable changed it quite dramatically it was an eye opener for me

I own 2 REL T9x for my audio (not movie theater). I can tell you that product is very good form performance and design view. Is it prefect, probably not. My subs not jumping around, because i do not use them for cracking windows. Audio level is like food. Salt should be used to bring other flavors in food but not eat salt. Same here REL is the sub where base is helping to hear other sounds but not actual base. it is amassing experience then i could get to that level. FYI: I paired my SF Olypica 3 which have already good mid base. So adding these 2 subs made it a lot better.

fair enough glad you enjoy the sub...to be honest if you carefully listen to what I'm saying in the video..my main issue is with the REL marketing..not really the product itself. I'm surprised your subwoofers aren't moving around. Either they're stuck to the floor with blu-tac (as REL suggest in one of their videos) or you haven't come across the right movie scene yet. Anything with sub 35hz bass turned up to reference 75db made my REL units do the moonwalk
@makafuniruni
@makafuniruni Год назад
@@propercushty I appreciate your honest review! And agree their marketing is somewhat bullshit. That said, I have the t7x and never had the walking problem either. I had 4 different subs on trial (SVS another REL ht1003 and a B&W.) The only sub that didn't intrude and only added to the music in a positive way was the rel -making itself "invisible". It was also by far the easiest and best integrated with main speakers. It lacks some low low end for movies, but I will live with that compromise any day of the year. With the grille on it's also quite beautiful especially compared to other subs!

@propercushty
@propercushty 2 года назад
Hi Robert. The idea is good (because original multichannel audio was envisioned with 5 full range speakers - later down the line a 'boom track' was added which I think evolved into the LFE channels we have today) but I think the problem with REL's model is their subwoofers still don't reliably fill out the 20-30hz range (unless you spend really big money). In the end you will have a living room full of subwoofers and I just don't see that as the most practical solution for everyone. Also take into account, when the audio is being mastered, the engineer probably does not set up their studio like REL recommend - typically it would be 5 identical channels + a correctly placed subwoofer with a crossover point at 80hz (I've also heard 120hz is a target crossover depending on the setup). I think setting up one's listening space to better replicate the engineer's is a better idea potentially (but that's just a guess..nothing proven). My preference (and kind of best of both worlds) at the moment is to get 3 tower speakers for your front L C R channels - each can play their own localised bass (at high dB with low distortion if you have a powerful-enough amp) and the bass produced will be better phase-aligned with the mid/tweeters - the bass quality itself is also likely to be better than a subwoofer's down to about 50hz where distortion usually creeps in with a typical loudspeaker woofer. Then couple that with 1 or 2 'proper subwoofers' - I mean big boys that can fill out that 20-35hz range at high dB. One more thing - with the REL products you always get a delay when connected via high level connection (it's about 8ms via their filters) - REL claim this as fast but if you set your distances correctly via the AVR setup menu then I think that becomes a moot point. I will publish a video soon demonstrating my new setup - and I think it sounds quite good actually. Have a good day :)

My Tzero MKlll works great with my McIntosh MA5100 and my PSB Imagine XB bookshelf speakers in my small music room. It has made a huge difference in the overall sound of my modest 2 channel system. It speaks quickly with a tight bass sound (which I greatly appreciate) and has integrated wonderfully with my equipment. I don’t think their product line is mired in BS and hype due to the simple fact REL makes really fine sounding subwoofers.

I enjoyed your frank review . I would be interested to know the dimensions of your room as I believe it is necessary to match the sub output to the room . How important do you find it ? I have a smallish lounge so am considering smaller models like the T5X and am also considering gear from BK electronics, I am mainly listen to music rather than films. I thought the object of the high level speaker connection was to be able to more easily seamlessly match the bass output of the stereo speakers without the need for an AV processor , or am I mistaken ? Regards Mark

@propercushty 2 года назад
@@pauloazera3801 SVS provides you with 800w - Dynaudio 500w. So we can expect the SVS to potentially have an extra 1-2dB of headroom. This might make some difference if you're watching movies at a very high volume level. The SVS also has a little bit of an advantage when it comes to surface area of the driver - so we'd expect the SVS driver to be more efficient. The SVS also benefits from a handy smartphone application which you can use to calibrate the subwoofer how you like. The Dynaudio has the advantage that it will offer nearly the same raw performance as the SVS, but it takes up a significantly smaller footprint as it's a dual opposing design. The other benefit of the Dynaudio is I imagine it has professional connections which facilitate studio monitor connection - not sure if this benefits you though. The Dynaudio could potentially benefit higher up the bass range (for example, over 40hz) - smaller drivers are lighter and easier to drive with less distortion. But it's hard to know unless we do an AB test and see. I think both of these subwoofers are solid choices nonetheless. I think go with whatever one you prefer the design of.

A few thoughts: - NOT including DSP in the sub means that we as potential purchasers don't have to pay for it. I see that as a good thing, as I'd rather have my AV processor do it anyway. I don't really understand why anyone would wish to do it within a sub, just a dumb place - Class A/B vs Class D on sound quality is still under debate. I currently have an AB, but have owned a Class D. A key point that I found out to my displeasure was having a board failure on my Class D. Class AB amps are well known technology and pretty easy to fix. Class D, nope, get a new board. On my amp, the main chip literally melted - I've never used an SVS sub. How does it deal with input to apply time delay? Is that done in the digital realm? If so, doesn't that mean that it has to digitise an analogue input, before applying the delay and then conducting another conversion back to digital? I'll let you consider the implications of that additional set of steps - It would appear that you missed the real objective of the high level inputs, i.e. to better match the sub to the rest of a stereo system. I've previously owned a REL sub (currently own NO sub), and can happily vouch for it's benefits - Just how loud were you playing it to result in it shaking so much? - If the sub was shaking so much, that's NOT about cabinet bracing, rather the weight of the sub trying to deal with physics. If blu-tak is too much effort, does make me wonder. Additionally, why not do the obvious thing and add mass to the unit? I did with my old REL by stacking some slate chopping boards on top, which not only helped to eliminate that effect and also protected the top from dummies accidentally scratching it Sorry, but whilst I understand the content, the approach and mindset looks to be way off

I am not sure if the downward fiiring passive radiator is the best design choice. They could have gone for dual opposing 10" PRs instead. But then again, the size of the Ti/Tx series is so small, it's hard to get a proper tuning even using passive radiators. Pressure levels in PR - designs can get really high and hard to keep under control. Rel would disagree with me I guess but I think a main concern about there Ti/x series is looks rather then performance.

@@bandg777 if you have tower speakers, then there won't be much benefit getting a smaller sub. With enough amplification, your tower speakers will rival a smaller subwoofer. To get a real upgrade in the 15-40hz region, you are likely going to need a larger, ported subwoofer to handle those frequencies with more authority than your towers will. A sealed subwoofer may also work - but you'd have to ensure cone diameter is large enough and good amplification - something like the SVS SB4000 or SB16 Ultra is where I'd be heading if I wanted a sealed to cover those lowest frequencies. Multiple SB-3000 subwoofers would also work. Allow your towers to play the majority of the bass - cross them over 40-50hz and you should get a pretty good sound.

@@damianhaber4890 It arrives tomorrow so follow up with me on Friday. I think for $449 it is a no brainer. I also bought the 4 year warranty via Best Buy. It is very good to buy from them since it is a brick and mortar you can return to or get a full refund 4 years from now if needed. A superior sub is the Rythmik F12 "affordable" version. You can save about $100 if you have your own cabinet. I also bought the KEF KC62- to audition (15 days) via Best Buy $1,500. To me it's meh. Sounds good. Goes low and is fast but not with as much SPL in the low range. It would be excellent for $500. It is going back. I think I will end up keeping the REL 1205. If Best Buy had the F12 I would have gotten that. I don' t like that I would have to mail it back if there is ever an issue. I also doubt it is far better than the 1205. Better, sure but not twice as good and nearly twice the price. $449 is a no brainer. My advice is to get it new with warranty via Best Buy. If you don't love it, return it and get something else. Are you mostly listening to music or home theatre or in what ratio? All these sealed subs are best for music. Also, two 1205's will generally sound better than one in a good sized room. You also have to dial them in and use REW to get them set up correctly (location, crossover, etc.)

Mate, if you had large floor standing speakers which can go down to 50 htz, in a room that is 2900 cubic feet 18w*15l*11h (feet) (I’ll be sitting 11-12 feet away), would you rather buy 510 sub from rel or sealed sb4000 or 16 models? 70% music 30% movie usage.
@propercushty
@propercushty 2 года назад
if you had large floorstanding speakers and a big room, then I'd be going for something with a large cone diameter. You're also sitting quite far away so will be demanding even more watts from the system. The most efficient option would probably be a 12-15 inch ported or 15-18 inch sealed if you want all grounds covered. In the USA, the HSU subwoofers offer great value. Your speakers are covering down to 50hz quite cleanly I would imagine, so it's the 15-50hz range that we are trying to find cover for - if you're listening to mainly music then the argument might be to lean towards the SB16. But a good quality ported like the PB16 Ultra wouldn't be a bad choice either. I personally love a big ported subwoofer like the PB16 Ultra. With DSP and proper setup you can get it sounding really nice and will hardly know it's there. At the same time you will really appreciate in movies. The SB16 would also be nice, but in bigger rooms it's going to come up short compared to a ported. Hope this helps

Are you saying studio monitors are better than Hifi speakers for the best music production? I bought a pair of Focal Twin6s. Very expensive! $4,600 Sometimes I miss the smoothness of my old Hifi speakers. Did I make a mistake?
@propercushty
@propercushty 2 года назад
Was just saying that in the market for studio montiors, companies are much more transparent and tend to give customers hard data. That's because audio engineers need speakers for a purpose and don't buy into the marketing hype - the market is very competitive. The smoothness you are talking about might not even be the speakers' fault - it could be reflections from the room or something in the DAC/pre-amp stage. The focals could just be showing you the truth. The difference with hifi speakers is that they tend to be made to sound ok in average living environments - studio monitors are intended to be used in well-treated rooms. However, in the case of subwoofers, I can't see a reason why a 'hifi' sub would be better than a studio sub at reproducing bass - and also don't understand why a high level speakon connector would outperform a balanced XLR connection - it just doesn't make sense to me but each to their own i suppose

@@WWeiss-nv5vz Genelec is very expensive - they have alot of recognition and are regarded as one of the best brands in pro audio. Hifi subs usually cost more like for like. For example, Dynaudio make two twin-fire subs - one is for studio application and the other one is for home environment (hifi). The hifi one costs almost double even though in terms of sonic performance they are the same. The studio version is called the dynaudio 18s but i forgot the name of the hifi version

@DanielRivera-wn7ne
@DanielRivera-wn7ne Год назад
In short, if your intention was a speaker for enjoying audio, then yes, you made a mistake. Engineers pay lots of money for speakers that are as "flat" as possible and reveal issues so they can FIX PROBLEMS BEFORE PUBLIC CONSUMPTION. Most mix engineers would not use studio monitors at home. They are for work, not play. The good news is you probably would not loose much money on those if you sell them. They are very desirable monitors. I would sell them and go for something like the Klipsch Heresy IVs and spend the extra $1000 on a good sub or two. But I'm an admitted Klipsch fanboy. Lol. Best if luck!

Excellent video, I subscribed. Anyway, I think by a musical sub REL means fast acting, which I can see their point. As far as their finish, I never had a problem with it, and find it to be one of the best around. As far as the (i series) compared to the (x series), I find as you did, that the (i series) is more refined cosmetically, aesthetically, and structurally. I have talked to REL on the phone, yes with an actual person, and I found them to be very cordial, and informative. They are obsessed with their speaker output option, and placing the sub in a far corner. I prefer to put the sub or subs closer to the actual main speakers since that make sense, at least to me, instead of nearly in another room. Again great video.

@andrewz925
@andrewz925 Год назад
@@propercushty The idea behind using a high level connection like Rel is that your subs are seeing the same signal at the same time as the main speakers, so the system blends together better. If your amp is giving the mains any kind of tone or imparting some characteristic, it'll also give that to the subs so everything matches. Rel also designs the crossover circuit in a purposeful way to make it higher quality. The subs also receive a nice, strong, amplified signal, then you blend in where your mains naturally fall out.

Am I right in assuming that to be an audiophile means you want to hear what the producer heard? .. or has the definition changed...correct me if I'm wrong! If you want to hear something that just sounds good to your ears, then that's fine (i'd call your a melophile rather than an audiophile)....but I also wouldn't pretend that REL's product line is superior to anything else because for some reason professional studios seem to be using completely different gear that heavily relies on DSP to account for the room. I liked them better when they were manufactured in the UK. Also the differences in amplifiers, a/b & d to apply to all types of amps and internally work differently. Please educate yourself on this subject before providing this information. That being said, all of amp types can sound good. That “speaker level” cable works completely different than line in. You should really be using this input. Did you read the way this works? That is what people by REL subs for. It actually uses the RCA input and the speaker line level input together to give you the complete sound from the amplifier, but takes into consideration your volume control. That way the output for the sub matches exactly with the output for your speakers. I think you missed this entirely. You can still adjust gain and cut off, but this is the way this sub is designed to work. I’ve had experience with REL subs for over 15+ years in music and home theater set up and I have no complaints. Also, looking at your room. It appears that you have too much sub for that space using any of these with hardwood floors and no sound deadening material, etc. you should have them on rubber pads or carpet. These used to come with spike feet. You should invest 5 quid on rubber feet. Seems like you are just wanting some thing that will shake your windows. If that’s what you want REL subs may not be for you at the price point. I have had much more thunderous subs but none that one set up properly. Need a little adjustment between music and theater.

I would prefer the feet to have NO logo, the drivers don't need logos either IMHO because there is a very nice badge on the top. That should be enough! Rolls-Royce cars don't have RR on every door! A discrete RR on the radiator grille is enough! Cabinet moving around the floor: KEF have been solving the problem of unbalanced forces for at least 20 years by having opposing drivers - in the KC62 this is taken to the next level by having one magnetic assembly for both opposing drivers. Theoretically you could compensate for the delay by placing the sub further forward of the main speakers, allowing their sound to travel forward to arrive at the same time the sub makes those waves.

I like the rel rant rubbing it in. lol I saw a rel video before seeing you're video, 2nd time now. I been so close to 98% to buying wasting £ on SVS PB16, but why? My JBL can do a frequency range that shallows down but with some DSP crossover and PEQ tuning can get them at 10Hz to 120Hz as 120Hz is the stopping point for LFE.1. LFE.1 range is 5Hz to 120Hz. Subs are going to find it awkward so that is where I have bass shakers take over at cos more felt than heard cos infersonic is inaudible. Just as high frequencies get past 8KHz the ear frequency range slopes off and so the turning PEQ and all needs to have certain frequency range tuning so the rest of the frequencies below 8Khz are less louder cos we can hear easily hear those frequencies. I can hear few sci-fi sound/fx in a movie Alien 3, 1992 that goes up 18KHz. Music mixes like, jean michel jarre will have a range to 20KHz few youtube videos may manage that some won't depending on what they used to rip the CD but the CD , up to 21KHz that I measured on RTA. Only my Cats can easily and annoying hear that range so easily but human hearing is rubbish compared to my Cats. Cat's range 40Hz to 90KHz it doesn't mean a Cat can't hear 30Hz or feel sense it? So Cats win. Unless got a pet Bat that is 1KHz to 100KHz? What does it matter "we" can't barely hear range once it gets past 8KHz it gets faint and needs to be greatly amplified to notice it as pinching pressure on the ear drum. I wouldn't touch a rel sub with a barge pole. Or any other home cinema made sub cos they never been used at cinemas. I use, JBL professional cinema subs 18" large boxes big sound or scale the size down for the small room but I am more accustomed to hearing/feeling them at cinemas in the past and they often cheap on ebay and all they need is Behrinher DCX2496 DSP loudspeaker management crossover and Behringer NX3000 that is more than enough even a NX1000 would suffice and wouldn't cost the silly daylight robbery prices rel are changing their products or any other greedy home cinema manufacturer to get more of the same thing, only used JBL PA subs are cheaper. It takes x4 or more subs to tango the single mono LFE.1 evenly in frequency once REW has been preformed. But the LCR surrounds have to also provide bass and I don't use bass management cos all the speakers in my room are JBL pro cinema and was cheap compared to say rip off, M&K 150 at £1.5k each daylight robbery, and M&K marketing is scamming the public to make star wars fan boys thinking they used those speakers for mixing star wars. yeah right sure? Only in post editing not for final film mix that is done using JBL professional PA speakers that are same used in cinemas so what they mix there, is same translation to the cinema or my THX home cinema, with real THX cinema in my amp rack. Those tiny M&K 150 wouldn't be able to handle Star Trek 6 opening titles on their own with the amount of bass! JBL PA cinema handle it easily cos the films was mixed on JBL and played back on JBL. Mine handle music at PA levels or calmer level in the dBA on the HF horns 2446 CD , 2380A horn can handle 120dbA which would be deafening and 85dBA peak is more than satisfactory. I heard had smaller JBL for years and wanted PA cinema but prices now have come down somewhat lower, got watch the bay, and know what JBL cinema PA and mine was made in late 80's and like a speaker goes. A speaker is a speaker, it's the crossover that makes the speaker. With DSP crossover I can tune, experiment until I am blue in the face, lol. Yes aware of harmonics when using sine wave and RTA and mic sees the 2nd 3rd 4th 5th and so on harmonics. My JBL used had scratches and they are all placed behind AT screen so as long as they do the proper cinema sound or PA club sound with LP or any other music that I can feel with LP makes me feel dizzy due to the frequency dynamics on the LP, chest feel. Place a coin on the sub does it fall over? if it does its due to internal breaching cos the box has a resonate frequency vibration? Oh so what. So does cars and buses have resonate vibration noises, think about it?

Your rel t9i is a special edition, and doesn’t come with the silver feet , but the standard rel t9i do have the silver feet ,just like the t9x , I know what your saying about the new rel t9x being shorter ,it’s almost like they have turned the subwoofer cabinet on its side ,but I like it ,tbh all we want to know is it’s better or worse than the t9i , and personally there are slight differences although rel use the same amplifier on both models , I like all the branding , personally there isn’t anything that I would criticise ,

Man discovers anger/passion, lol. You didn't mention the rel 3d theatre because I really wanted to know if it works with home cinema or is it marketing. A big thank you for recommending bk electronics p12-300sb-pr, I bought one last week and sounds great.
@propercushty

Lol thanks - maybe I was having a bad day when I made the video 😂. REL 3D theatre is definitely marketing. Like I mentioned in the video (I know it was a long one lol), your aim when you're trying to recreate audio is to try and match what it was they used in the studio. In studios they typically use active monitors for the front LCR and surrounds (all the same model of speaker). Have a look at this webpage and you'll see what I mean. www.genelec.com/audiovisual-production They then use partnering subs for LFE effects. The crossover is usually set around 60-80hz to take strain away from the main speakers. This also gives back power to the main speakers (as they're not playing bass, they're now capable of more low distortion sound at higher listening levels). REL 3d theatre is just a way to exploit the customer into buying multiple subwoofers from their line-up. They reference how Dolby cinema is meant to be 5 full range speakers partnered with an LFE channel (and that's why you should buy as many subwoofers as possible basically). You can recreate REL 3d yourself by getting 3 or 4 subs and placing them round your room. For instance, you could have two subwoofers specialised for LFE, and then you could have two smaller subwoofers placed elsewhere to specialist with audio above 50hz (you could even cross these over with your main speakers and you could use that especially for stereo). There is a guy on RU-vid (sparechange) and he did a video of REL 3d which I looked in to. In the video he seems like he really likes it - then if you watch a few videos later (when the REL guy isn't there), the sparechange guy mentions that 'REL 3d sounds good for some things, but not so good for others'. Try and find the video - you will see it if you look enough. Put it this way - if REL are capable and willing to spread misinformation about why the high level input is better, that their cabinets are acoustically inert and resist vibration...all that stuff which I exposed in the video as garbage...then I am sure they are also willing to lie about REL 3d. I don't buy from companies that endorse lying. When I get sick, I got to a real doctor that can prescribe me treatment and medication based on proven, peer-reviewed science - I don't go to the village witch doctor to look for alternative medicine and rituals to perform to make the evil spirits go away. Glad you bought that passive rad from BK - they are actually a decent company. The driver you get in that unit is quite expensive - very, very good value subwoofer that is. Have you found it rattling around and doing the moonwalk round your room? I imagine that's not the case?

@@leonnoel1243 Thanks for the kind words. Truly appreciated. Genelec is one of the best studio monitor companies in the world. There are some other great brands: Neumann, Adam Audio, ATC, Focal etc. Alot of people don't know B&W is actually another one: I believe they are the mastering speaker of choice at Abbey Road Studios. Genelec produce active speakers - that means speakers with the amplifiers already built in (often they are bi or tri-amplified to provide specific power to each driver). The whole point of this product is to reproduce the most accurate audio possible. They are perhaps the most revealing speakers on the planet - these are used to help the engineer hear every element of the audio and make correct decisions with mixing and mastering. Speakers used for mastering are typically closer to what you want in the home environment, as they are more designed for midfield listening and have better frequency extension than smaller nearfield monitors. My argument is studio monitors are used by content creators, so if you want your content to 'sound like the producer intended', then you'll get closer to that standard if you use the tools the engineer used in production. I mean.. that makes sense to me (if you're an audiophile) but other people don't seem to think so. By the way, this advice applies if you are an 'audiophile' and want a 'high fidelity' system. If you are a melophile and just like listening to music, then there is separate advice for that need. If you just want the music to sound good to your ears then the only thing you can really do is get home demos and try for yourself. All these reviews on youtube are totally subjective and subject to major bias (who do you suppose sends the gear to them for reivew...all those freebies come at the expense of a properly detailed, data-driven review). I understand I don't have alot of the measuring tools people use to measure the audio, so my videos offer my subjective view as a musician and audio enthusiast, but at least that opinion isn't smeared in bias because I use my own money for my ventures. I would not reach out to REL for more products because after testing these subwoofers I know what sort of company they are: good for others but just not me thanks. On another note, I haven't seen any properly negative reviews on youtube except for the stuff I produce. If you know of any other channels please let me know as I would like to reach out to them at some point. I think there are maybe one or two other channels I have seen (audiosciencereview being one that I recommend). To conclude, I think in the home setting a pair of studio midfield monitors will probably beat any mainstream hifi system for faithful reproduction of audio. For subwoofers it is a different story - what you want is low distortion, high output bass. Most studios are small-midsized rooms, so their needs for a subwoofer is different to if you have a large home theatre for example. In the case of a home theatre of large room, you would need far larger subwoofers to pressurise the space. One more thing, most of the bass you hear is reflected sound and your room modes, so it's far more important to be scientific about choosing a subwoofer. That's my opinion anyway.

@@propercushty I listen to audioholics and they sometimes have james larson and mathew pose who really get into the details. Another guy is erin audio corner if you like measurements. Genelec seem like the perfect solution to put in a house for auro 3d 9.1 layout especially the active speakers. I'm used to the wires being plugged into a avr then your TV connected to that so this active stuff sounds confusing. But I guess that's the future which why its expensive but can't find much information about dealers or prices in England. Great having the ear of a knowledgeable down to earth reviewer.
@propercushty
@propercushty 2 года назад
@@leonnoel1243 ah yes I forgot about audioholics. They're good - I have no problems with them really. Erin is also good - he has a klippel device or something like that I am sure. But at the same time I haven't come across many channels that give negative feedback really..it's usually always positive. Perhaps I am a pessimist or depressed or something like that lol. Audiosciencereview is one of the only channels where I notice there is a firm 'not recommended'. Going active for the speakers isn't 100% necessary, but you will probably get much better sound quality this way compared to an all-in-one avr. Each of your actives would require its own plug socket - the signal would feed to the monitors by RCA or XLR. If you have an AV processor you would do it by XLR as that's a professional balanced connector and more suitable for clean audio over distance. The benefit you'll have is loud, clean audio. Each speaker will have between 200-300w of power to itself (as they're individually bi-amped or triamped). If you want the best you have to pay for it - one benefit of studio monitors is they don't tend to lose much money compared to speakers - the same models are in production 10-15 years usually so your resale values are usually better. For instance, the Neumann KH 310 (which I am personally considering at the moment) has been produced since about 2012 and is still a top seller today.

I have to agree that so much audiophile stuff is definitely just a money grab, but at then end of the day, if you're happy with how it sounds and you feel like you got it at a good price then that's that. At least that's how I see it. Never heard or owned a REL sub so I can't really confirm or deny anything you really said in this video, but just the few non bs issues like shaking and small quality control seems like enough to think twice before buying one.

I owned a Sunfire as well when it first came out. It was the sub to have for HT at the time. I found it to be slow when reproducing music however, due to its stiff thick rubber surround. I soon sold it and ended up buying 2 Entec LF20 servo subs and immediately learned that fast, lightweight cones with nimble surrounds, and servo control over woofer excursions, both forward (+)and backwards (-)really clean up the coherency of 2.1 , 2.2 channel music.

There are some rules for subwoofers and it doesn‘t matter if it‘s for HT or music. A subwoofer should be as heavy and a big as possible to sound great. You can‘t cheat on physics.
