I have slowed down significantly on buying blu-rays. Early 2022 I was buying tons of new releases at full price, and then not rewatching them for months, if ever. Nowadays, they all hit streamers only a matter of months after they release. I try to just buy movies I adore & see myself revisiting for years to come. I totally understand where you’re coming from man!
That’s a great mindset to have when it comes to collecting. I always say what’s the point of owning a movie you’re only going to watch once or don’t really care for.
I have all but stopped. I just think digital copies through Vudu/Apple are easier to deal with. The prices are nearly always better if you wait for sales (I have gotten a lot of stuff for $2 (Vudu MD2D), $5 and $10). Many times things go on sale maybe two to three weeks after release date. And best part I like is I can take my Firestick on the road with me when traveling and I have my entire movie collection right there. Ripped all my discs to Plex and put all my Blu-rays into storage. If they take stuff away, fine. I won't be happy about it and it will probably result in a class-action lawsuit. But the vast majority of things I watch are rentals anyway. I cut my Blu-ray collection down to like 300 discs too from 1200. Most things I watch once then rarely if ever revisit so makes little difference to me. Boutiques will always be around for physical movies too.
Some excellent points. I like the convenience of being able to take your collection with you when it comes to digital. And you don’t have to worry about digital movies taking up space in your home. I like to collect both but lean more into owning the physical copy. But I don’t blame ya one bit.
I hear you! I have been going through a lot of this same stuff and reasons on slowing down on the purchasing of new movies. I still will pick up new titles, but just at a slower pace.
There's nothing wrong with being practical. It's your money, your time, and your prerogative. You know your priorities better than anyone else. Collecting should be fun, not a burden.
Why i slowed down? DEBT! Fridge full of groceries, roof over my family's heads, keeping cars in garage! Thats the long & short of it for me my man lol. I'll get back to buying more films in future. But I've dialed back considerably.
I just buy the good ol classics at thrift stores, new movies I was going to watch at theaters for almost the same price at the theater I might as well buy it and own it.
I agree. Theaters have gotten crazy expensive. Might as well watch at home and have the ability to pause and use the bathroom if necessary. And you own the movie forever.
I concur with your reasons. All legit. My goal is to buy just one movie a month or 12 per year. That way price is less of a concern and I can cross off my most wanted items.
I’ve done the same there are so many releases now I’m being much more selective as I want to save more besides I’ve got such a large watchlist so I’m going to catch up on that.
I agree with you , and another thing, all this upgrading from Blu to 4k is bananas 🍌 to me . There’s barely a visual difference, but yeah I’m selective also , most of my purchases recently have been boutique releases that are coming to Blu for the first time , boxsets etc, I’m to the point like you that if I can watch it first I’ll do that 90% percent of the time
I've made the decision to buy more this year solely because many older movies are already out of print or headed that way and the used prices on certain movies are climbing.
Ive had to slow down too, alot of increased costs like insurance among other things :( i think the entire economy is in the pisser, for everything. woahh u stopped at the bestbuy, i did that too!!! lol
Streaming has so many benefits that radicalized physical media collectors refuse to see. Like Streaming it first before buying a movie so you don't end up wasting $30+ on something you don't like. Movies are not getting any cheaper, so might as well know you're getting into and not just blind buying every new release.
I’ve slowed down for sure but my bank account doesn’t seem to agree. The prices are out of control. A new criterion for me is $50 for a 4k. I’m making a bit more money but my wife is also on maternity leave and I rather spend the money on my kid. Availability is a good shout. Here you can only get physical media (new) from a select few stores. Amazon has taken over and it’s not the same. Give me that Us steelbook! This year I’m really tackling what I own before buying. I got rid of all my streaming services. I track what I’ve seen and I review everything I watch now. I’m about 70%+ viewed and if I don’t like it, I sell it. That’s how I fund my collection.
Speaking of availability, totally forgot to mention the Cameron 4ks. Even if you pre ordered, you’re not even guaranteed to receive them on time or at all for that matter. But yeah, I’ve heard good things about the sequels. Might just have a Psycho marathon sometime soon.
