Sorry to hear about the loss of work! I was a tour photographer for 20 years but switched to real estate just in the nick of time. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery for you. All the best my friend!

Thanks man! How's the real estate market been for you during covid? Still getting a lot of work?
@CHASINGTHATHIGH

Brendan Grant it’s been crazy! Real Estate industry is the only industry to work in. Everything else is nonsense. I did 20 in the Entertainnent Business covered tours of every Hip Hop and Reggae star. Besides the girls and drugs it’s was a waste of time! Anyway, start doing Real Estate videos bro!

Thats the one thing preventing filmmakers from just going out and making stuff. Falling into that gear-chasing hole, where u spend more time researching, selling, and upgrading gear instead of using it

I wouldn't say it's the ONE thing preventing filmmakers from making stuff. Most filmmakers who don't actually go out and shoot spend their time unwisely in loads of other ways. But if you're like me, you upgrade once every 3-4 years. Not much of a time suck. Plus, in my opinion, it's my job as a cinematographer to be up to date on all the new gear (cameras, lenses, lights, you name it). And not only gear, but I spend a lot of time doing research just trying to gain knowledge and improve my craft itself. It's a constant, never ending cycle. And I tell people if that's not what they're passionate about in the first place, they shouldn't be pursuing this career at all.

Hey don’t worry about it man, everyone’s gonna feel like a stranger when productions get going again. You’re not gonna be the only one ;)

Great video man! The fun part is, cameras and gear is only as obsolete as we make it. We can still shoot on a ScarletW 6 years from now without spending any money for new gear or loosing money because we sell it. If you reached a certain level, Just keep on making cash with what you have. I know dsmc1 Red and Sony owners which still make money with 2000 and more hour bodys. These cameras are quiet old and were very expensive back in the days. But still create stunning images. But if I count all money I spend on cameras its way more than the guys who once bought a DSMC1 or FS700. So, id say decide, buy and be pleased with your decision no matter what comes next is the goal with gear. Rather than selling constantly because marketing forces us to get the next shiny invention. ;) How ever you see it, great and enjoy the Komodo man! I’ll get one too if the black version ever comes out ;) Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the response Alexander! One thing I forgot to mention in my decision was the resale value of the SW. Once the Komodo goes into full production, used SW's are going to plummet, meaning I would never be able to make money off the sale again if I didn't sell soon. Selling allowed me to get a new camera and actually make back money off the switch :)

I agree with you, but unfortunately, the 'if you reach a certain level, just keep making cash with it" part is simply not true. Once you reach a certain level you have to keep up with trends, and the trends are more and more resolution. As Roberto Schaefer (DP for Miles ahead, above other titles) would explain it, Panasonic and other TV makers need to do things so people buy a new TV every years... and the "K chase" is just that. Even if you wanted to use your Arri Alexa 2K from a few years ago, you could *not* work on a Netflix production with it, even if your name is Roger Deakins! That's why you basically at this level just go with whatever camera the production put at your disposal. The Black magic pocket 4K and 6K are mind-blowing too... the Komodo does feel like a rip-off from Z Cam IMHO in terms of form factor and all but the low light is truly out of this world. The Ursa Mini that I shoot with is now almost totally obsolete. I personally never been a fan of RED cameras color-science, and I don't have the money to invest but it's tempting to get the Komodo. It saddens me to see the M4/3 trend goes away so quick tho, because it really did allowed access to some crazy vintage 16mm glass which equivalent would be totally out of reach for indie filmmakers. Of course, nothing keeps you from using any camera you want as long as your client agree. But that's the problem : your client's level also increase as you progress in the industry. Arri will sell a french-flag for 800 bucks if they so desire, simply because there are shoots where anything not branded "Arri" is literally legally prohibited by contract...! I kid you not. And I saw the original pocket BM 1080p cams getting graded within Alexa color-space with preserved luminance in Resolve, swapped a Rec 709 on that combo and you had 1 1/2 more dynamic range on the RAW files. You could grade it side-by-side with Alexa shots... 16mm sensor! 1000 dollars cam...! But we have to keep up with all this corporate nonsense.

You bought the scarlet w at the same time I did, and I remember watching your unboxing video. I didn't even open it for a couple of months, and I don't know why. I don't use it as much as I want to. I'm sorry about your covid situation. your new gear looks awesome. may i ask, how much did you sell the scarlet w for? mine is in MINT condition, hardly used :).

Really sucks man, hopefully things are kickin back up for you at this point. How do you like the pair (S1h and Komodo)? Been shooting on the S1H for a little over a year now and I love it. Been a trooper for sure. But looking to get a new A cam, and looking at the Komodo. Really think I’m gonna pull the trigger. Do you like the pair together? Thanks man.

Thanks man! It's crazy to think how long it's been since I made this video already. 2021 was my best year yet financially and career-wise. After things started opening up again productions got real busy and work has been booming. I've been shooting on both the Komodo and S1H a lot recently and they are both awesome cameras. I just got off a set today where I was using the Komodo built up as A-cam on a dana dolly and the S1H as b-cam on a jib and ronin. They pair together really well.

@@Brendan-Grant good to hear man. Glad it’s working out. The last two years were insane for sure. Lots of crazy. Thank you for your input as well. Pretty sure I’m gonna pull the trigger and look forward to having the pair.
