This was a fantastic woodworking video - probably one of my favorites I've seen in years! I'm also a student doing my PhD, having a full time job, and teaching, while still trying to be an avid woodworker (when I have the time and money to be one at least). I know how hard it can be to find the time to do this sort of work and I admire you for your commitment! The cost in time and money is irrelevant when you make something this beautiful and with so much intention.
Absolutely gorgeous. We share the same sentiment about creating. Having taken an interest in woodworking I've also realized I don't like sanding, cutting, etc, especially the loadness of machines, yet woodworking is becoming one of my favorite things to do, for me it's the process, designing, building, seeing the end result.
Please please use push sticks on the table. My missing fingertip and screwed up nail is a testament to the importance of using them. I had to skip to the end, my ptsd got triggered. Really nice work.
Absolutely gorgeous design. Very stocky and thick but softened by the obvious curves and the delicate curves. Thats a retail floor piece, ready for public sale. Nice job!
Really nice work, and great video! I love the look of the finished piece, it contains strong reference to different styles but combines them all without getting muddled, that shows a lot of design smarts. Big thanks for including mistakes & fixes, the humility is appreciated. Cheers! Looking forward to more
Hello young man I am enjoying the video but I noticed you were wearing loose-fitting and floppy clothes, here's a safety tip never wear loose-fitting or floppy clothes around rotating machinery or devices it's an accident waiting to happen. Please be careful you don't want to lose some fingers.
It's warming to see and hear your views on this tedious applications of making. It is the "why" we do in Why We Do It... Beautiful project, excellent final product in both the furniture piece and in your video.
Magnificent! My only comment, is that it seems a little short for standard beds, but I have no doubt that was intended. My second comment, is that your makerspace is waaaaay better than mine. I feel like a pauper.
Very nicely done. Though I would have rounded the legs at the top and under the box. The squareness moves the eye away from the beautifully rounded box. One's eye catch on the corner of the legs.
Looks very epic, love the contrasting woods and unique rounded shape. My only recommendation would be to make a taper or something for the front legs. Other that lil minor thing, you killed it. Good job
What a beautiful piece! Ikea, HA! You made a work of art, rather than buying something utilitarian. Just based on the results, there is no comparison, but I also completely echo your feelings about the satisfaction of bringing a vision into the world. Personally, I go a step further because I greatly enjoy the process of working the materials and being physically involved from rough lumber to finished piece. In that sense, woodworking is the opposite of my "day job" working with corporate computer systems: hands on vs cerebral.
This design is awesome. Im truly inspired, your skill and attention to detail is amazing. I’m a design student going into my 2nd year in 2024 and I’ve also just recently moved apartments. I’ve always dreamed of making my own furniture for the place and also starting a RU-vid channel to share my interests and ideas I would be cool to chat a bit especially with woodworking in mind if you’re ok with that
The video was very nicely stitched and i kept glued till the end. Hence did subscribe...). As far as what you made, i loved it. Like my kind of project in the forthcoming holidays..
Hey man, great job. It is really well done, you video has a nice feel and pace. Oh wait, I have to say boo! Boo I say! You used CNC, Sawstop and Festool! You are a hack! OK, that's out of my system. I personally enjoy my CNC, would love to get a domino, and Sawstop was created a few miles away, and I will likely get one someday. I just had to pretend to hate so that you can feel included with many other makers. Enjoy and keep going!
Great piece. Great design. My only critique is that the visible drawer slides are ugly. You can use under mount slides next time. Or don’t use metal slides at all.
I mean this with totally positive intent - not here to be a troll - but I think you may want to look more carefully at your jointed boards before calling them flat (referencing 2:14 in the video. There was a definite lack of flatness on that piece). Overall the piece turned out fantastic!
I’m an aspiring woodworker in high school. The equipment at your college looks very nice, could I know which school you go to so I can apply there? Looks southern but I’m not sure where.
It honestly depends on what type of projects you want to do, woodworking can be so broad. For the type of work I usually do, I would start by getting a quality table saw, circular saw, and a drill. Table saws can be very expensive but are the heart of the shop for many, so I wouldn’t advise cheaping out on a cheap jobsite saw, I have a 700 dollar rigid hybrid at home and there are great deals on used tools. With those and some drill jigs you can start making some pretty cool geometric and modern pieces, and after that buy tools as you need them for a project you want to do. I am very lucky to have access to a maker space (if you can find a local one that is also an amazing option, especially for trying it out), but I built up a tool collection of my own over many many years, there’s no rush. I can’t give you really detailed advice since I don’t know your complete situation, but I hope this helps
The best part of the video is where you reflect on the question "Why do I love woodworking". As a maker myself I also ask myself the question. All the small steps that you need to do for this result aren't really interesting, but the final result makes it all worth making stuff :) Good video!
Your design and craftsmanship are notably worth of admiration and praise, but stand intellectually toe to toe with your wit and prose. Truly remarkable work, my world is better for having joined yours.
Made it to the end and I gotta say, you made a really cool cabinet kid! I was starting to freak out when you started adding gold leaf, covering up that BEAUTIFUL curly maple. But you brought it back like a champ by making the drawer faces out of equally beautiful curly maple. I don't like gold one bit, but that cabinet makes me like it this one time. Good job champ!🎉
Super clean design and build. When I was taking project based courses and had a part time job I thought I was going to die. I cannot even fathom working on RU-vid videos on top of that. Super impressive all around man, keep it up.
This is as well done as something by ShaunBoyd or FourEyes - great explanations, a down to earth vibe, clear camera work, and a fantastic end product. I'm subscribing!
Whoa!!! Watching you standing a piece on end and sending it through the table saw blade to complete that rabbet made my skin crawl! This is one of the most dangerous things you can do. I hope when I see your next video, you will have a sled that will allow you to perform this operation safely. There are many examples on RU-vid.
I subscribed on your last video as I thought "if this Creator really goes for it, they're gonna take off". Really really pleased to see this next video. Thanks for sticking with it!
this is extremely nice! both the woodworking and the storytelling. Inspiring stuff mate, keep it going and you'll have a big channel one day :) Greetings from Czechia!
Wow. Really enjoyed watching the whole process. Also really appreciated you leaving in the mistakes you came across and earnest commentary on your journey that goes wider than the actual woodworking itself such as fitting it all in with school work etc. LOVED that you shared your thoughts on why you love woodworking too! Amazing piece! Keen to watch you grow as a creative! I think the effort you’ve put into the making of the cabinet as well as the video deserves genuine feedback and praise. Subscribed.
Beaaauutiful work! Greetings from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. I was wondering if you can explain a bit about the economics of your work place? Is it a public coworking? Is it municipal or you have to pay for it? I do hand woodworking and really struggle with lack of space where I can dedicate myself to work.
That’s gorgeous! I love the rounded edges both in the carcass and drawers front, I would have put rounded edges on the top of the four legs as well. Really well made, you should be proud of your creative skills 👍😊
Beautiful piece! I wish someday I'll have access to a real workshop and can do some actual wood working myself. In the mean time i have to live vicariously through amazing creators on social media. ... My only concern is that you only made one 😢😢😢 the silverlining is that you'll have to create a new design when you eventually settle in a larger space and need a pair.
6:39 ditch whatever program you're using and get SketchUp (8 preferably, since it's the most stable of them all) and make that radius out of 100 segments (you select the corner tool and type 100 + enter). That way, when you'll print it, it's a smooth circular feature, not an approximation with facets.
Awesome job! Slapping together some pressboard IKEA crap is not building anything. What you built is yours and yours alone not one of 10 million trash pieces.
Woodworking is perfect. Design is a bullshit. If the corners of the drawer fronts are rounded, then why don’t they fit into the groove of the body? I see the building at the angles of the facades and I don’t like it
I am starting college soon I have a love for making things with my hands and I especially have a love for making furniture like the piece you made but I am unsure what to do in college and where to go I would love to have some advice from anybody that knows more than me.
Dude learn how to use a jointer and throw away these push blocks. Also do not make horizontal cuts on the table saw without a capable jig, otherwise woodworking will be taken away from you along with one or possibly more fingers.
