It is a personal choice, but one that isn’t a difficult decision for me. I had to replace my MIPS helmet after a crash late in the afternoon when I slipped on ice going down towards the Suisse chair in Courchevel. It was a big fall, I was somersaulted and landed on my head. The lugs in the harness had all sheered off (as they are designed to), the helmet was cracked I was concussed & was out for a few seconds, but otherwise fine. I’m pretty certain that had I not been wearing the helmet i would have been seriously injured. I agree with you about moderating speed and there certainly are some scary sights of skiers going to fast and without control, but for me mitigating risk is a good thing. I would never not wear a helmet.
If you are doing alot of tree skiing - Japan for example...A helmet is essential, as you tend to hit alot of branches...even glancing blows are better when you have a lid on.
Good to revisit this. Couple of other thoughts, great to avoid clobbering head with skis/poles. May be mandatory for insurance purposes depending on policy? Agree about the speed and control aspect. Generally don’t see ESF in helmets unless Peak season and worried about someone crashing into them.. Control speed! Nuff said.
FWIW I wear a helmet - Atomic Savor GTHD CTD - and back protection - Atomic Live Shield 2 Amid - not really to protect me from me hitting any thing as I don't ski that fast, but to protect me from skiers who do ski fast, and who might go into my back. It is also why I wear coloured jackets or pants that stand out so those muppets can see me below them. In short you have to do what it takes to minimise injury happening to you via the actions of others. Note: I always find it puzzling that some skiers more often then not female think it is clever to wear mostly white or light coloured outfits. Ex: One French male muppet in Les Deux Alpes in Jan 2023 was mostly all in white with just a black back pack. i,e, an accident waiting to happen.

I’m a fan of helmets and like your research shows, they do offer a level of protection that for most skiers is worth having. If you’re an expert (instructor level) you can often avoid people, objects etc, and so they may not be as necessary, but for the majority of skiers, a must IMHO. For now, it’s a choice and rather than make them compulsory, I’d rather see the slopes policed better. There are far too many out of control, crazy skiers zooming around European slopes. Remove them and the number of accidents would reduce significantly.
i learned skiing in the 90s, a time where we used to laugh at the germans for wearing them on pistes and even bikes. we do wear them on skis now, still not on the bicycles though :P. i think without a helmet you have more awareness to the sideview of your eyes in a way, which does get muted a bit at first when wearing a helmet for the first time, over time this awareness does come back a little bit but its not the same. i do wear a helmet nowadays, not only cause im a instructor and want to give the right example to students and people on the mountain in general. also the only time that i didnt decide to wear it this season on a last downhill run is the time i fell over backwards and actually hit my head causing me to have to ibuprofen myself and go to bed right away after getting home from it. in the end a hat keeps you warm just like a helmet, so as long as im wearing something on my head, might as well put something on that also protects me a little bit. the difference between the old days and nowadays though is that the slopes are getting a lot busier, so you are moreso wearing it for others lack of technique or awareness, than your own shortcomings in skiing.
I wear a helmet since i fell head first off the piste while going fast at bad sight/conditions... Luckily i fell into powder and not a rock... Bought a helmet after that... So the moral for me is kinda on both sides, u can choose to ride safely and not buy a helmet or take chances and better go get one... And anyway, i need something to keep my head and ears warm so why not add the protection... Peace and thx for all your videos.
Oh dear 🙈 Your choice , agree I know a few people who refuse to cycle and ski without a helmet and it’s all about image. And we can see your image (hair) is very important to you. It’s quite obvious you like to let everyone know you’re an OG on the slopes and not wearing a helmet is very typical for someone trying to portray that image. Awful evidence on why not to wear a helmet. Your shoulder , ankles can be repaired and with rehab get you back on the slopes. The head/brain is a lot more fragile. Another viewer lost I’m afraid. Not wearing a helmet is your absolute choice and right. But also plain silly. To choose this for yourself is one thing. To try and justify it. Is really quite irresponsible and shows a lack of smart. Your naive “evidence” is really quite nonsensical.
If you hadn't of brought this up i would not of noticed. Now you have mentioned it! and promote not wearing one! my opinion on you has changed, peace out 👎
