As Charles Dowding says often, it’s ok to walk on your beds. With a no dig system that has lots of compost/organic material in the top layers, you arent going to cause compaction by stepping on the beds or occasionally rolling over them with light equipment.

Just bought the land. I was struggling with buying a tractor. It would take away from so many other needs. This is an excellent option and leaves me with enough money to buy a greenhouse and other important items we need for our 10 acre barren farm field in New Brunswick!!!! Thanks

Thanks for the informative videos JM. We just bought our dream property and will need to buy a larger BCS system in the coming months. My old 712 has been such a reliable workhorse though. Such an impressive piece of equipment.

Awesome! Good luck with the farm project and with leveling up your BCS. Start with the essentials and build out your kit from there!

My mentality is "I am the tractor" whenever I'm working my 2 acre market garden using only hand tools. Thanks for another great video folks!

My main business is honey so I plan on mass growing honey plants that provide great flavor and high production. Then I want to build a market farm for food production. step one on food side is grow what I like to eat to be self sufficient and work my way.

We recently bought a BCS740 with a 85cm Berta flail to work in our wood now it has reached the stage that our old Massey Ferguson 35x won't get in there any more. While we really like the 740 there is no doubt we couldn't live without the 35x. At least here in the UK it would be a lot cheaper to start with an old Fergie or similar along with some second-hand implements than to go fully down the 2-wheel route. There are simply not sufficient implements for 2-wheel tractors on the used market (and almost no used 2-wheel tractors out their either). Over here, old Fergies, David Browns, etc are reasonably abundant and spares are readily available and cheap.

Thank you for giving me a $#/acre. Tractors, quads, even wheel barrows create so much compaction. Some is fine, but I pull out 1' dandelion roots by hand just like Paul. The tools I use changed once it was wood chip went on everywhere. JM your a huge inspiration for me. My wife and I manage 9000sqft on side and its been awesome.

@@TheMarketGardeners Sure thing! I just don't want to starve lol Id love to see you garden, but Northern AB is super condensed growing season so my time is super limiteed. Have you ever had luck fall planting onions before?

Love my BCS. Its the primary machine in the garden. Have an old Ford 1910 but it just moves material and mows. Cant wait until BCS releases an electric version, thats my only complaint right now (fuel, maintenance, noise). "Bigger is not better", absolutely. Quality diminishes the more you scale. 1 cultivated acre is the perfect size with 1-2 people

Awesome! Yes a tractor (or truck or atv or other 4-wheel vehicle) is definitely useful for moving heavy loads around, no doubt about that! Thanks for the comment fouroakfarm! 👊

doesn't severe compaction result from using heavy machinery (like a car or truck)?

Do you prefer the PDR over the power harrow? Thinking of buying a bcs in the next year and looking at best attachments.
@TheMarketGardeners
@TheMarketGardeners Год назад
Power Harrow has always been our go-to for the fine bed prep, but the PDR is great and allows you to use one tool in multiple ways, and here at the new farm we're using the PDR with tiller for all the bed prep currently!

you definitely don't want to be doing all your fieldwork with only a BCS if you are growing on any scale bigger than 1 acre and even then... very rough on the body. plastic mulch layer doesn't work well on clay soils. moving around materials on the farm. flipping compost pile. there are uses for this machine, but it can't do everything. and even among the things it can do, it can't do everything as well as a 4-wheel tractor. we tried to start-out with only using this machine and it got old very fast. ✌️

I think the key is being ready, and organized. I have the CAEB front loading cart for my Grillo. It is a powered wheelbarrow, i.e. a poor man's front end loader. I have the driven wheeled trailer as well, much bigger capacity. I find my self using the little cart more, it's not that small.
