I'm back again with my Land Rover discovery 5 hse luxury talking about 2 new major problems that have come up! One of the issues being one I thought I had missed but it's finally caught up with me....
My Land Rover Discovery has already had a new engine and now at less than 50k miles has started with 2 new issues.

To me as an outsider it’s just incredible how the Brits put up with such appalling poorly made cars from Land Rover and yet continue to support them. Engine failure, suspension issues, windscreen issues after just 47000 miles is completely unacceptable.

I agree, absolutley expensive junk, a lot of us hate them, i cant understand why people insist on paying premium price for crap. Could be a status thing.. more fool them

Totally agree. So you know it's a vehicle with many well documented major faults but you buy one anyway. Asking for trouble. Sorry, but no-one to blame but yourself for such a poor decision. I hope this experience will teach you to buy with your head, not your heart.

They are atrociously built rubbish and I can not fathom why people keep on paying top dollar for them . It’s a status thing re the badge but there are so many superior alternatives out there from any of the Japanese of Korean brands .

If you stand outside the car and put your arm in the drivers side and push the screen near the headliner, you WILL see it move. I work for a windscreen company and we replace around 5 a week in the two JLR dealer we do work for. The glass is coming away from the bond along the top edge.

I encountered the same issue and Land Rover not only replaced the window rubber surround but they also fitted a brand new windscreen, which I was very grateful for as it was getting a bit sand blasted. They also acknowledged that the battery wasn't looking healthy (car was three years old) so they replaced that as well, even though I never requested it. Issues suck but it was nice to be treated the way I was treated and consequently I've ordered a new one.

I absolutely LOVE mine… MY2019 and no issues. I treat it as a mobile skip with tonnes of logs thrown in the back or building rubble one day, then a wash and a quick vacuum and then off to Ascot. It will cruise at way over 70mph in comfort and quiet. I have the 310bhp 3ltr engine….I still have my old MY2004 Disco 2.5 and whilst that is creaking and had some chassis work for MOT recently, it’s like an old smelly dog and is just part of the family… of note neither have a sun roof 🤨

Hi Doctor, sorry to hear of the many issues you have had with your Discovery, I don't own one, so can't give any advice or experience. I would say that they are all serious issues, on a vehicle that is relatively new, that is low mileage, I would be very disappointed if they weren't all fixed by a recall or covered by a £900 a year warranty!! As for the water leaking down the inside of the windscreen - This is a 4 year old, luxury off road vehicle, who on earth would consider this to be acceptable, especially when you have stated this is a common fault... I hope you are able to get these issues sorted quickly with no extra expense to yourself👍👍

Mate let me tell you my story. Disco 5, hse 3.0 D. 40k miles no faults whatsoever, 48k miles, had an issue with the battery. Would wake up every day to a low battery almost completely dry ass battery. One miraculous day however….. dead battery, car won’t turn on at all, tried jump starting didn’t work. When I eventually got in the car, the start stop button (believe me or not,) was flashing, whilst everything else was off. Ok let’s take it for a service. I took it for a service at an approved Land Rover site. Substituted the factory LR battery to another one. Revised all the other stuff car working great again. Then…….. the start stop button again flashing and almost draining my battery all over a day after the full service. Called the LR mechanic and the approved Lr mechanic. Guess what they said, one said that there was nothing wrong with my car and the other tried to extort money off me by saying it was a software update issue or the cables from the centre console were chipped or whateva I obviously refused to accept that.z BULLSHIT!!!! Do not 100% trust LR mechanics, always take it for a second opinion or worst (which is the light at the end of tunnel) try fixing yourself first if nothing else works. I manually software updated the car and began turning the start stop button off every single time I turned on the engine. Guess what? So far the battery problem stopped. Start stop is an enemy to any discovery, be careful with yours and stop using it. My opinion about the extended warranty that you paid for, I don’t think they sort anything out for you, it’s the same situation with Tesla service issues. They are all rubbish and think they know our cars that we drive every single day for 1000s of miles better than we do. Best of luck mate. Your disco is really gorgeous.

Had exactly the same problem with windshield at 4 years, also extended warranty- Dealership was absolutely no help and had to pay the full replacement cost around £840 . Like you I was not prepared to let it go and after days scrolling Internet found a Land Rover USA site which basically recalled for this problem ‘ LR Technical Note’ which actually included my Disco 5 VIN number in the range to be rectified. Wrote to LR Customer Service giving details etc and my experience with dealership and they agreed full refund ( very generously! ) - good luck, just don’t take the dealership advice at face value, as on numerous occasions since I had the vehicle from new, every issue seems to be a battle with them.

I have a D5 2017 TVD6 first addition, purchased at 2 years old 20,000 miles. At 3 years old, exactly the the same leak occurred. If you pushed the windscreen from inside just infront of the roof rails you could see the screen lift by 3mm+. Landrover provided a loan vehicle. Car was then kept undercover for a week, whilst they got a replacement windscreen and fitted it. All done under warrantee.

Had the same problem with my D3, most said it was a blocked sunroof drain, bit I didn't have a sun roof. Found a single thread on a forum about the roof body seam under the capping trim on the roof, couldn't see anything visible but a tiny bit of mastic to the factory gunk they put of panel seams, and hey presto, it works no more water coming from the top of the roof.

Hi Doc, I bought my 1st Defender 90 brand new in 2014, as we left the main dealer excitedly to drive home it started raining heavily, I got on the A12 in Essex near to where I used to live and the water started p*ssing in through the drivers side rear window. I long story short, Land Rover had my Defender more in the 3 years I owned it than I did, and that is NOT an exaggeration, they even took the whole side of the car off, de bonded it, rebonded it and refitted it…..it still leaked like a sieve. I feel you pain brother!!!! Kind regards Tony

I feel your pain.....had a 66 plate disco sport, panoramic roof started leaking. Took it back to the dealer, they couldn't find the leak but told me my windscreen was cracked. It wasn't cracked when I took it into them. Obviously they cracked it while looking at the panoramic roof. Anyhoo, they told me the panoramic roof not covered under warranty. I investigated the issue, and it's a well known fault. Disgusted with the dealer, this was the 3rd car I'd brought from them. I replaced the cracked windscreen and got rid of the disco. I love Discos, but I will never buy a JLR product ever again.

I have owned an X5 and Touareg both with sun roofs, they leak the same as Landrovers, the drainage pipes clog up and have to be cleared. Not a big job to do and test about 30min, the dealers should check this as part of a 20k service, most don"t.

I purchased a brand new L/R (21 plate) last year, after 4,700 miles it had a major fuel leak and was recovered by the AA to a L/R main dealer, 6weeks later the D=deale rang and said that the vehicle was repaired BUT it needed a new engine, disgusted with the whole situation I told them to keep it, and will NEVER EVER go near a L/R again, I now own a Mercedes E class which is superb.

From what I've read about other manufacturers having similar problems the cause can be blocked drain holes in the sun roof, if no sun roof is fitted try running some 'Creeping Jack' sealant or similar around the top of the windshield seal, failing that hope for a cracked windscreen then you can claim off your insurance for a new one at low cost.

It’s simple, a large car needs a large engine. No matter how powerful a 2L engine is it will be under more stress as compared to a 3L due to the weight of the vehicle. Hence why you see 3L vehicles with higher mileage and outlive the 2L 4cyl

I had a 2003 TD5 SE7 in Australia from new. Whilst many problems existed over time, more specifically, yes the windscreen leaked. It leaked from new, whilst under warranty, through the top RHS. Land Rover tried to seal it with silicon from the inside and behind the roof liner. After years of it continuing to leak I needed a windscreen replacement to repair a large stone chip. I discovered, the storm water was leaking through a joint in the metal between the roof and A pillar where the windscreen is sealed. I finally fixed the problem by repairing the metal folded joint and resealing (black adhesive sealant) in a new windscreen. After 30 years of owing land rovers, I now own Isuzu’s (NPR truck and Dmax) for better reliability and lower operating costs!

Not only are the cars not fit for purpose but neither is the company. Had a new screen fitted to my Wolf this week. In the workshop was a D5 for a screen replacement (£600). Worth a check that the drain holes on your sunroof are clear. Must admit, this related back to 1995 Peugeot 306, but I vowed never to buy a car again with an openable sunroof. If you need a windshield reseal, you can check if you have a leak by getting air compressor and blowing air around the seal. Listen inside for whistling noise (again my experience relates to a replacement window that was incorrectly sealed). This should guide you to the failed seal location. The only remedy is window removal and reseal. Most window companies will be able to remove for you and refit for you, but they will not guarantee that they will not break the window. Good luck. Chin up, you will get there.

Had a 3 litre HSE Lux. Great car but land rover would not honour warranty claims in the first three years. All wheels were badly tarnished but more worryingly selecting drive on the gear knob sometimes defaulted to Sport so you would drive away with a cold engine with the gearbox stuck in first! LR said can’t replicate it so no action taken. Knowing gearbox problems can be expensive I changed to Lexus 450h. At 77 I don’t want to be in a lay-by waiting rescue. D5 is a great car - wish it was made by Lexus.

I weighed-up the Discovery, Range Rover, X5, Grand Cherokee, Land Cruiser and Audi Q7, and it came down to a choice between the Land Cruiser and Touareg. (Couldn't find a Land Cruiser at the right mileage/price.) The Land Rover products were out of the running fairly quickly after I started seeing too many horror stories similar to yours. I had the same problem with my D5 HSE Lux Si6 at 4yrs old. First of all, best thing is to use LR Assistance as they get it in straight away and provide a hire car. LR said the same thing about water ingress not being covered by warranty and talked about good will gestures. I made it very clear that I had no intention to pay for what is clearly a well documented manufacturing defect. After 2 weeks of discussions, LR UK covered all of the costs to replace at over £1k. Overall, my D5 has spent about 20% of it's life at the dealership and so extending the warranty is an absolute must!

Please don’t leave this leaking windscreen for long. We have 2019 disco 5 HSE. During the later part of lockdown we noticed the passenger window started misting up and and then the footwell was wet on the passenger side (front). Booked into landrover and they took the car and the leaking windscreen had somehow corroded the full/main wiring harness (I apologise if I haven’t got the name correct) this was a full interior out and required a back order as the part is assigned to the chassis of only new cars. We didn’t see the car for 4 months. Thankfully under warranty they covered all costs and used landrover assist to keep us mobile. We where given a disco 5 the same as yours for 2 months (hse luxury) and a RRS for the other 2 months. Please get this looked at straight away.

I have had water ingress issues in the past but on different vehicles, and often it was down to the Sunroof drain which runs down the inside of the A-Pillar become blocked with debris. This can usually be fixed with forcing high pressure air down the channel and clearing it. I might be barking up the wrong tree here, but it might be worth a try.

It was a nightmare in my case caused all kinds of electronic issues(stereo went silent, it used to randomly throw errors like "low tyre pressure" that would jump between all 4 tyre and eventually disappear, the gear shifter would intermittently refuse to rise, and on occasion it would throw fantom DEF errors) resulting in LRNA buying the car back. I don't know what TATA is doing but my disco 3 was quite reliable it was a good 4-5 years before anything broke which is what you expect in a modern car. I bought the 5 when when 3 started acting up, somehow I drove the 3 more than the 5 because the 5 spent hundreds of days in service, waiting for parts. It is a shame as it was a great car when it worked, but really you should expect more for the premium price paid. Bought a Hyundai palisade which so far has been good, it's 20 grand less, drives alright, has a plush interior, has a LONG warranty, is absolutely massive inside, and has a decent AWD system(not it's not a LR but the 5 was nowhere near as good as the 3 mostly because of 20in wheels and the factory tires vs. AT 18's on the 3).

I have a LR4 2017 low mileage top of the range 3.0TDV6. I absolutely love the car and space. But in the last two years I’ve had leaking sunroof which would fill the footwells, new alternator and pulleys and the final straw crankshaft failure causing catastrophic engine failure. In total it’s cost me £10k+ in two years. I would love a LR5 but it seems they haven’t improved things.

Hi, I think I messaged you before as I had a 2.0L 2018 D5, the engine failed after 21k and got two new turbos on warranty. Amongst other issues was DEF sensor, a broken rear passenger speaker and the final straw for me was exactly what you have experienced... After heavy rainfall I got in the car and the drinks holder was full of water.. fast forward a week I looked under the driver mat and it was soaked. Water was literally coming in and dripping on me if I drove through a puddle! THEN.. the hazard lights starting to come on intermittently and couldn't be switched off.. the was the start of the end for me and the beloved D5. To stop the battery draining AA assist advised me to disconnect the battery when the car wasn't in use! In the meantime I had to wait 2 weeks for the official dealer to confirm that LR would pay for all the work (windscreen replacement, new carpets and dash insulation). The dealer also said they couldn't find any error codes or issues with electronics which was obviously not true! I did have an extended warranty, but a claim was not needed. However, although the work was done, I have since offloaded the car back to Peter Vardy as I have no way of knowing what issues and gremlins the water ingress will have caused (the water is probably still in the car rotting the chassis and damaging electric terminals?!). I wanted long term reliable ownership and unfortunately the Discovery cannot offer me this.. the dealer did a good p/x price due to my issues. They also gave me free servicing & money off a new Defender. I am now 5 months away from getting a 3L 110 SE and fingers crossed no issues in that

I have also heard that you can park with the nose of the car pointed up hill to help stop the leaking. Hope this helps if Landrover takes too long.

There needs to be a class action law suit. I also had an engine failure on my 2017 Discovery 3.0 L HSE Lux. Land Rover originally said they would pay 40% of a new engine, but later backed out with the only reason given was I was the second owner. I bought the car while it was still under warranty. I hate Land Rover! Horrible example of a luxury car manufacturer!

The problem is that JLR have such a high number and value of warranty claims that their service engineers put pressure on dealers to reject as many warranty claims as possible, even when they are obviously liable for supplying faulty and substandard goods that are not well enough developed.

My wife 2019 Disco HSE about 20Thousand miles windshield leakage from the driver side and LR corp knows about the issue and when I spoke to the Dealership they told me it’s common with the sealant they laid the windshield on. So I’m sure the warranty will cover it since it’s a manufactory defect and LR know they used the adhesive by not putting enough or the wrong kind.

I had my 2017 discover HSE for just about a month when I bought it last March 2021. 40k miles on the clock. Started small and it then got way worse in Colorado snow and rain. They quickly ordered me a windscreen asap took about 3 weeks to come in but I took it in and they gave me a temporary solution. The windscreen was covered under a “manufacturing recall” and completely covered by Land Rover. I’ve had my 2017 for a year starting March 1 of last year and in 1 year I’ve put 25k miles on it just had my 65k service. Oil changes and that’s pretty much it so far. I’ve been fortunate. Also had battery and earth issues has you have had. Had to have new wiring harness 12months ago which I now think was caused by water ingress. I asked local dealership if water could have caused a problem. They said that problems of water ingress in previous models had been sorted and everything was fine. I'm sorry but I really struggle to understand what it is that people seriously think they need these enormous, expensive and extraordinarily complicated cars for, which have nonetheless been brilliantly designed to drive over the most challenging terrain it's possible to imagine - plenty of YT vids can demonstrate their truly amazing off-road abilities. If you're not using if for such purposes on at least a consistent weekly basis and that purpose is somehow essential for your very existence, why burden yourself with a vehice very well known for requiring such high maintenance? If you have the requisite money, there are all sorts of viable alternative choices available. My suspicion with these cars is that although they're unquestionably brilliantly designed to offer a superb combination of space, comfort and off-road ability, the qualilty of the actual materials and construction is at best, far too inconsistent for the money. I also question the wisdom of small engines in big heavy cars. Anyway, personal choice, as ever...

We've had the water leak on our 2017 Discovery....twice. First one was replaced under the warranty period in 2019. Then it failed again in 2021, a few months out of warranty. Thankfully my service advisor worked with Land Rover of North America, and they covered the replacement as a "goodwill" since it failed again in under 2 years. So far it's okay, but I don't have much confidence that the fix will be permanent. Unfortunately, what they say is true about JLR products being poorly engineered and unreliable. At least the other issues I've encountered, I've been able to repair myself, but for those who don't have the means to DIY, these are absolute money pits. It's a pity because when the car works well, our family loves it.

In my opinion the reason the engine block cracked is because this little motor is working too hard to move this big vehicle. The DIscovery 2 had the same issue with the 2.5 Litre BMW engine, mine had a cracked block & my younger brothers 130 Defender with the same engine completely failed, over worked small Diesel engines in large 4x4’s will always fail, in my opinion! Landrover tried to sell me one of these with a 2 Litre motor Disco’s, I refused & told Landrover that this exact failure would occur, again this is why I changed to the 79 dual cab Landcruiser instead, as I’ve mentioned before on your channel.

Same problem with my 2017 Disco, purchased in UK, which I exported to Kenya, where I now live. There is a class action in USA, on this known defect. My Land Rover dealer in Nairobi, Inchcape, tried to fix the issue, by resealing the joints, which I paid for, but this did not resolve the issue. Rain water pours into the drivers area, into the coffee cup area, flooring and threatens the electronics. The dealers answer to resolving the issue is that the customer must buy a new windscreen. JLR claim according to their dealer Inchcape, the issue derives from sunlight breaking down the rubber seals. There is of course nothing wrong with the windscreen, and, if I were to buy a new windscreen, I have no guarantee that the windscreen or rubber linings have been redesigned. My Disco can fjord deep streams and navigate off road on safaris, but cannot handle a simple shower. Shame on you Jaguar Land Rover! I too have had to resort to sticking gorilla tape over the roof and windscreen joints, which ultimately lifts off as I drive, fluttering like a kite around my luxury Land Rover Discovery.

I Bought a brand new discovery sport 7 seater September 2020 and it completely broken down, luckily of the motorway 1 week after purchase. No one could help me push this vehicle of the road, not even AA or even jump start it as it’s a hybrid. It took numerous road users to push this vehicle of the road safety. Only the Land Rover mechanic can assist if it breaks down not AA. It’s been recalled back more times than I can even recall. The gear box has been replaced, electrical fire 🔥 recall, the petrol tank has been replaced and numerous computer issues recall. I have been in more replacement vehicles than my own purchased vehicle. I have never enjoyed driving it as a warning ⚠️ sign always flashes up. It’s been in the garage for the last 2 months since Febuary 2022 and I was given 100% re-assurance all service was done and it’s safe to drive. Within 12 hours, it’s flashing service required. The lookers Land Rover and the manufactures and dealership are a real nightmare to work with. It’s a really sad situation be in after purchasing this vehicle brand new for £41,968.80 in September 2020. Currently it’s being referred to the Ombudsman.

Hi thanks for sharing your experience. From my personal point of view, it is of incredable value, to publish such issues of bad quality - both jn terms of manufacturer skills and aftersales- service. The windscreen of my Series Land Rovers and my Discovery 1 300TDi are waterproof. Only the Series vehicles collect water at the A-posts and roofs-rails through the door seals. It must be a kind of extraordinary intuition to construct a premium car, with a glued-in windscreen, which lets water in. Nowadays, it is hard to decide, which car to buy best in terms of reliability and longevity.

Despite the fact, that this van accompanied us for about 20 years, MB convinced us to never buy such a car again. I bought with 110ooo km on the clock and the 3rd rear axle, due to diff failures. I saw some rust spots and treated them with an angle-grinder, got the hood and fronters hot-dip-zinc-coated etc. etc. I never got rid of the rust through all the years, exhanged all the doors ... At 120.000, so only 10.000 km in our ownership, the timing-chain broke. There still rumours, that OM616 engines last for ever (lol), at least taxi-drivers do 1.000.000 km without having any major failures. So we decided for a genuine MB engine on an exchange basis. 80.000 kms laters, the engine shows come signs of weekness again. Became hot on long slopes, struggled to get up the hills etc. ...
