Why I Still Love Cities Skylines 1

I still LOVE Cities Skylines 1. The modded game is still MUCH better than Cities Skylines 2 at making realistic cities. While it's by no means perfect, the original Cities Skylines has a charm and magic that its sequel has not yet been able to replicate.
It is for this reason, I've decided to continue creating content for the first game. In today's video we will be returning to the city of Saltaire to build out a massive suburban area based on the real life town of West Valley City. Throughout the video I will show real world inspiration for the places I'm building and talk through all the great things about modded Cities Skylines 1 and why it's still worth playing in 2023 despite the release of Cities Skylines 2.
If you're trying to create truly realistic cities, the original Cities Skylines still reigns supreme.
If you're new to the channel, Saltaire is a realistic, but dystopian, American Cities Skylines build inspired by Salt Lake City, USA. While not quite a true one to one of the real life Salt Lake City, it is heavily based on the region, but somewhat exaggerated. Think if SLC was remade in Grand Theft Auto or something similar.

i miss the custom park building the most - the fact that parks in 2 don’t have node edges to build paths off made me so sad
@KingDavidCreates
@KingDavidCreates 10 месяцев назад
It's one of many weird missteps I feel they took with 2. I can understand not having the time or ability to work in some of the DLC features we got with CS1, but little things like not being able to access props or rocks, and what feels like every park has a fence around it so no customizability is just odd. I get that not everyone is a detailer but a lot of bigger name content creators and a lot of players are, and it's one of the lesser mentioned reasons imo why you see a lot of players and content creators returning to CS1. As it's hard to be creative and "Build the City of your dreams" when assets and tools are so limited. It's not even a "Well CS1 has 8 years of DLC and CCPs so there is more assets." thing. I'm 99.9% sure even base CS1 had more asset variety than CS2, especially since commercial assets in CS2 are at best like 2 assets per zoning size (1 for each style) but with different signs on the front for different companies.

CS2 is a Colossal disappointment. For me, the entire point of a CS2 was to fix the computer melting performance. But, nope, it's just lipstick on a pig. It's rough now, wait until mods and assets become available. 911 to the fire department is on speed dial.

While I'm not as much of a Modder or Hyper detailer like you, I have found myself going back to CS1 not just in playing but also content I'm watching. it's just much more interesting than watching people place and zone the same industry, commercial, residential, etc and services. It's hard to create things that feel unique or interesting in a game with so few assets and the ones it does have are so big and in your face that you can't really do much to make them feel unique. Unlike for instance seeing people blend Vanilla/DLC assets in CS1 to create wild things like Navel Bases or County Fairs or unique High School Campuses or... You get the idea. CS1 is just the better game for creativity which also makes it more fun to watch imo.

Yes! So pleased to have more Saltaire content! You're one of the few who tends to build cities with a real sense of place rather than just being a hyperdetailed diorama of a random city, and it's really nice to see more of it while CS2 seems to be in a position where it's difficult to make unique cities with it.

i agree in that currently modded cities skylines 1 is much better, however at the same time cities skylines 2 is still new, after the devs release the asset manager/store. people will be able to do much more with the assets. as they give way more than cities skylines 1 gives. and with the devs also working with modders, i cant wait to see just what tools theyll be able to make.

As you say in the video, C:S1 still is such a wonderful game 😻 Nothing about that has changed in the last couple months, so for me personally it would not make sense to love it any less, if you know what i mean ^.^ in fact, as you also point out, the amount of really amazing that you show in the video are only possible in C:S1 currently, and exactly that is one of the things I really really love so much about it 💛 So, as I keep mentioning, still really enjoying C:S1 content in general, and will absolutely continue to do so ^-^ This video to a certain extent reminds me of "soulfood", if you know what i mean. It's great diving into C:S2 and learning about the new game and so on, but coming back to C:S1 is such a treat ^-^ So so many really amazing assets, they are great ^-^ But more than that, you are doing a really amazing job using them to build really special places, absolutely loving it 💛 And this one episode alone contains so many really different builds that are all cohesive but still absolutely unique and beautiful all in their own right :) Absolutely love this level of diversity/variety 💚 It is so so satisfying being able to build this really diverse and immersive kind of city, isn't it? ^-^ Again, really enjoying your videos & builds ^-^ Really enjoy the trees and green spaces in the area :) Even though lots of your builds in today's episode are kinda dominated by low-density sprawl, I think the areas still are quite dense and these green spaces are really amazing to help break this up. And of course, trees, plants, greenery is just beautiful 🌳🌲 Thank you so much for the episode, really enjoyed it, much much appreciated! 💛 Looking forward to the next one ^-^ ALL the best :)

Not that it matters much, but "Nephi" is pronounced with the vowels of "knee" and "fight." Also, having watched the bit of the Saltaire series where you made Temple Square, I've kind of wanted to say that I appreciate the general, well, normal tone you've taken to the Mormonness of SLC. Like, yeah, we can be really weird in some ways, like a lot of cultural groups. But we're also just pretty normal and mundane, too. We have bleak sprawl and same-y chain restaurants, and we watch too much RU-vid and play Cities: Skylines. I happen to live in the Rose Park neighborhood of SLC (my house is at about 1200W and 800N). Just looking at the map at 16:55, it looks my neighborhood got paved over with large industrial buildings. Oh well. Scale is like that sometimes. I'm enjoying this anyway. :)
