Nigel I love your Panasonic GH3 videos both the Panasonic S5 and Panasonic Gh5s are on my radar. And to be honest I see the Panasonic S5 as a full frame, Panasonic GX8, GX85,GX9,G7,and Panasonic GH3 all rolled into one.
gear seriously DOES NOT MATTER. give a Pro any camera set up, even a kids toy camera and they will still make stellar images, because they know how to translate what they see in their head into the image they capture with the camera. People will complain that the pros say gear does not matter while using expensive gear, well duh. They have put in the time and established themselves and use expensive gear because they can afford to. They do not NEED to use the expensive gear though. once you all advance your photography, you will also get to the point where you finally realize that GEAR TRULY DOES NOT MATTER. the only people that think it does are the amatuers and casual shooters.......
@@orion7741 well, I consider myself Pro, been on many high production sets and each job requires specific technology to tell a story. If you would like to capture a water splash in slow motion, you need specific gear for this, if you want to have a gopro looking footage, you need a specific gear for this, if you want to have home made video, you need specific gear for it, each job requires different gear. Now this doesnt mean you can not make beautiful images with cheaper cameras, but oh Boy Gear does matter and whoever tells it doesnt, are really not understanding the question correctly.
@@ElBoyoElectronico I see that all the time about cell phones and I roll my eyes. The phone just came out 3 months ago, what do you mean? 🤦🏽♀️ I just want a great camera lol.
I’m using the G7 for video and some photo work. No one has complained about the image quality. My “main” photography camera is a Nikon D3300 that has been with me for around 7 years. My only “complaint” is that none of them have dual sd card slots, but other than that, I’m quite happy with them.
i've had my DSLR for.... wow. 14 years now. I've invested in very nice lenses since then, and can attest to the fact that it is glass that matters most.
@@epoi92 focusing is all in the glass. I have invested in high quality lenses. My lenses, since on such an old body and at this point even my lenses are years old, don’t have image stabilization. To me, that means if I’m shooting in low light or on or below 1/60, I HAVE to use a tripod. That’s the only difference I see, really. All of the new tech that’s come out isn’t really all that better than what we already had. Tech in the past 20 years for digital photography has marginally progressed, not enough for me to replace anything. If I do upgrade, it’ll be to get a full frame and that’s it. All these new cameras with all the bells and whistles are just that- bells and whistles.
Yup, I just brought out my Canon 5D Classic for senior photos and it turned out great. That camera came out in 2008. The kid I was taking pictures of was born in 2004.
I really like this video and I'm the type to cheer for those underdog film production where they try to go and make something big with so little and actually achieve it. And videos like this helps filmmakers a lot.
@@LucidRecords honestly the A7iii is no joke and i bet with the A1 out you could get a killer deal on a used one. I don't think I'll ever need a better camera. I got the viltrox 85 1.8 along with the kit lens and has been solid.
Hey Nigel, you nailed it again on how shooting on a camera that shoots 1080p is still relevant. As you said a lot of people are stuck on having the latest gear and not realizing that your skill, ideas and creativeness is what is going to showcase your work, not a $5,000 camera. I feel you can make this video in 10 years and you will still smash this topic, well said Nigel!
I bought that camera this month and man I'm so happy, thanks for the advice I saved sow much money,i got the case for 250 Canadian dollars and two lens for 100$. The picture and video are very impressive still today's.
I gotta agree with you Nigel. Sometimes you don't need the latest and greatest equipment to create incredible projects. You just need something that works and helps you get the project off the ground.
Love my GH3 in 2023‼️Your comment about the image quality is right on. I parked my Pentax 35mm when I ran out of film 🫤 and this camera returns similar looking still images - at a far cheaper cost as well. Thanks for the vid, I’ve subbed✌️
totally agree! i still use the gh4 as a workhorse on corporate projects and companies are super happy with the video quality. story, skill, lighting, sound are most important. impossible to buy a camera today with bad image capabilities. now, 'what can u do with it?' is the question...
Oh baby, that FD 24f2.8 is so peak. I have never seen an old SLR lens with better coatings. Some of the OLY glass was great, and the other FD glass was pretty balls at times, including the 50f1.2L, but that 24f2.8 is phenomenal. I use it on my X-T2.
I agree and I still need to learn a lot. I have traveled around the world with my GH2 and other cameras before that, but now I am ready to learn more with a new G9....
you're totally right, when you buy expensive gear that shoots 4k or 8k or whatever, you're not just buying the camera and that's that, you need to also get a high-end computer to edit that 4k footage, you need tons of sd cards and multiple hard drives! I watched your videos when I got into filmmaking and I wanted to get a gh3 so bad too but I couldn't find one in a good condition, later on, I stopped looking and I ended up buying a Sony A7 with a cute rig and some lenses for a good price, even though its a camera from 2014 I am just so proud of it, the footage from my Sony a7 is just amazing, I have an ad I did for a little gig I have going on if you wanna check out it's on this channel, it was shot using my a7 and a vintage lens, overall the video quality doesn't matter much, great movies were shot on 1080p , its not about the gear but the knowledge you have when it comes to this craft, anyway great video buddy! you inspired me a lot, also I learned lighting from you, but i can't find some cheap gear yet hahahha
Thank you!!!! No one tells you this. I've spent a fortune trying to keep up with the next thing. I've recently purchased new stuff, but now I am more likely to hold off any future purchases and max out my use of the current tech. Hopefully, I'll be youtubing my 8 year retrospective some day!
It's so cool that you're willing to go against the standard of "new gear is better" and use something older and still get awesome results. I'm impressed with the upscaling to 4k part, which I thinking about right before you mentioned it. I'd never think to do that nor would I even think it was a good idea.
I love my panasonic g7....I bought it used for $300 and i was able to create awesome high quality videos for clients. Plus i also love to mix footage with my iphone 12 pro max they never seen a different and are happy what i am able to produce for them. I even use a nokia 920 window phone sometimes in the mix as well. But my G7 is truly my work horse
owned the gh2-gh4 a nd gh5 and loved them all. besides low light and auto focus they are amazing. specially IBIS

Awesome video, I shoot on c100s, the fundamentals and story you are telling are so much more important then how new the camera is. When I compare my c100s image to other cameras I shoot, I still love the look of the video it captures.
It's not wonder that my favorite filmmaking channels are NigelBarros and ponysmasher and one just recommended the other. Love your stuff Nigel, always a pleasure!
Wow! I love this concept (just subscribed) and I've been watching the GX7, G7, GX85 and even GH4 prices and they're getting down around $300 or $400 recently😉 The GX85 is my choice (because it has such good IBIS) and I overcome the battery life issue with a faux battery, 5v to 9v converter cable and a waterproof power bank...and speaking of waterproof (well, weather-sealed) the G85 is the only one that is ALMOST on this $300 list that does have that. I am always trying to convince students about this idea of budget filmmaking and it's SOOO REFRESHING to hear you take this approach!
Ok, I now have a GH6 and an S5 as I’m getting back into filming weddings. So I been shunning my GH2 and 3…. I just tried mixing in some GH3 footage on my 4k timeline…. WOW! This camera looks just as good! Never gonna make the mistake of leaving it home again.
I love these kinds of videos. I still use my G80 (G85 to you yanks) and I love it to bits. It is nearly as cheap as the Gh3 these days, but it does shoot a beautiful 4k up to 30fps. I think the GH3 beats it on codecs though.
I use a Gx85 from 2016 and couldn’t be happier with the image quality! There’s a wifi hack gets you cinelike d, the ibis and small size make it great for portability. Since it’s so small you don’t need a super expensive gimbal, my tiny G6max holds it with no issues! Panasonic products are highly underrated and would always recommend one!
Why do you use it? Because you're the king! Another great video dude. Did you get a bunch of snow in Oregon right now? We are all snowed in here in seattle.
This is so true. At my school I used to always borrow the GH4 for film projects instead of the FS7 or EVA-1 because it just fit my workflow better. And now years later I sometimes have to wake myself up and realize again I shouldn't aim for gear I want, only the gear I need.
I completly agree, even though we own some recent cameras like the Sony A7C we allways end up shooting in 1080p because of the 120fps and the really small and easy to edit files, sometimes with a good bitrate the 1080p can even be scaled up to 4K and clients dont even notice even if I tell them that it isnt true 4K
I've upgraded to the bmpcc4k from the GH4. I'm never going to sell it tho, everytime I go back to it, it feels so good to use! Video quality is still very good 👍🏼
Excellent message, Nigel. The RU-vid filmmaking community is definitely the worst place for FOMO and "I need the latest gear" syndrome. It doesn't help when the creators rely on sponsorships from gear companies to make a living, which means naturally the latest and greatest is always pushed into our faces every other week. It's catch 22 in a weird way.
Hey man, always an inspiration. I managed to pick up a Gh3 just over a year ago for about £120. Really great camera which allowed me to get into making videos without breaking the bank.
I'm hooked on my Sony a5100's, great gimbal camera, vlogging and the video looks great. I can buy them for $225 with kit here in Saigon. I have 3 and am not looking for upgrade at this point. The 1080p looks better than the a6400 in my opinion. Of course I'd like to shoot 4k, but haven't found a camera that compels me to change cameras.
@ORCAasmr I run mine on gimbal with a dummy battery and the rear screen open a little. I can get 20 min here in Saigon without overheat. Got same result you did before I used the dummy battery. Plan to upgrade this year, but will keep a5100's for "hazard cams"
I totally agree with you. I love my G6. It could be the geek in me that likes older cameras. Plus, I'm not into just buying cameras for the sake of buying cameras. I don't do video and certainly care less about 4K, my computer wouldn't stand for it. I have another camera that uses 4K and I have never used 4k on it(GX80/85). So, both older cameras. It's not the camera that takes the picture, or makes the video. It's the person behind the camera. By the way, I really appreciate seeing Oregon. I grew up there. I hope to visit there next year, with my trusty G6.
Still rocking my Canon 6D! It surprises me every day. The beauty about using a camera for so long is that as you realize its quirks / limitations, you become more able to compensate for those flaws. I know I've become way better at lighting because I know with that camera I can't push it in post as much.
I still use a GH2 along with a G85 for multicam shoots. I color match them to A7siii and a7iii. I still really love the colors out of my hacked GH2. Still holds up now.
Love the hidden light in the frame. Very smart. Just like this video and you! Thanks for sharing. I'm currently stamping down my GAS for the S5. This is helping :)
I got a GH3 off ebay quite a few years ago to get into photography. though the video quality was excellent I just did not enjoy any photos that came straight out of camera and I found focusing was a big issue for me. I didn't want to invest in the lens ecosystem since over tiem I was having no fun using the camera, so once I had enough cash I sold the body and bought a Fuji XE4 (refurbed and before all the hype so luckily I got a great deal with the kit lens). brought back the fun and love I had for photography. grateful for the part the GH3 played in my journey but I was so happy to move on from it.
I'm saving up for a Lumix S5 as an upgrade, but I still currently use my GH2 for everything. Going strong for 10 years, hacked for some minor improvements, and still does a great job. Can't even do 1080p30 without losing sound but its such a great challenge to not shoot with slow-mo. GH3 seems like a dream camera from here haha
100% agree. I have some pretty amazing new camera’s although I still shoot.with the Canon T3i on occasion. I just love the video image quality out of that camera and I also mix it in with my new stuff and I think it blends nicely. The only reason I don’t use it for every shoot is the lack of follow focus. It’s a lot of work to use on moving subjects. Although static shots... the results are just pleasingly aesthetic .
Thank you, Nigel! I've been into music all my life and thinking of starting my YT channel but getting overwhelmed with all this camera and video stuff. I´ll try to get one of this cheap cameras and try to learn on the go with your help! Inspiring! thanks!
First video i saw from you on my recommendations list and i subscribed. Your videos look so good and are so well paced. I had a gear syndrome a year ago but i used it as an advantage by setting myself a goal to get enough money from videos to buy a canon eos r to replace my eos m50. At the end of the year i got the eos r but sadly it did not make me any better creator over night😅 but it did make filming & editing easier and faster.
I love what you are doing on this channel. It's too bad that youtube only promotes videos that help camera manufactures make money. I own two gh5s that I bought for $4000 in total. The quality is only marginally better than the GH3 or 2. I think these old Panasonic cameras still hold up really well. Thats the great thing about cameras these days is the quality hasn't really changed drastically over the last 10 years in these small forms. Makes me want to sell my pro cameras and just live off the gh3.
I bought the GH3 when it was released and still use it, the quality is incredible I was thinking to upgrade to the GH6 but it just doesn't make sense at the price it's now. I guess I'll wait until it drops under $800 then maybe give it a shot. I also would recommend the GH3 to anyone looking to shoot pro quality videos. The sound is also really good.
I still use a c100, circa 2012, 9 years old. Whenever I get camera envy, look online for cameras to replace it, I look at the footage I just got and realize "dang, this still looks really good". I'll eventually replace it, but this camera is still very very useful, especially in controlled situations.
I randomly dusted off my 11 year old GF1 and have been using it recently. A lot of fun to use and the image output is really good I like the rendering of the older m43 bodies. On a 27" 4k monitor or even the 24"x36" print I have hanging the 12mp is straight up gorgeous and proof that any ILC camera from the past 10 years is more than enough. I have a G9 as well. edit: the other thing that trips me out is how the 11 year old OEM batteries last forever in the GF1... like 3-4 sessions over a period of a week, ~500+ shots. Don't buy third party batteries, they swell after a few years and become unusable.
It's worth noting that modern compression algorithms like h265 have dramatically reduced the amount of space a 4k video takes up. Even Samsung's NX1 that came out in 2014 likely has files close to the size of your 1080p GH3 files. Newer codecs with ultra high bitrates take up space for sure, but there is a happy medium with 4k.
I shoot stills with both medium format film and MFT (talk about a radical difference?). For film, I go out with a Mamiya 645 Pro TL and C220. Up until recently for digital I used an Olympus E-M5 II and shot primarily high-res tripod shots of my abandoned interior/exterior style explorations I shot in film. I bit the bullet and bought a mint/barely used E-M1 III almost just for the handheld high-res mode. Obviously it's better in every way (unless size is a factor?), but being able to use high-res handheld is really nice even if its lower resolution compared to the tripod mode. I've also been able to use it for macro and portraits to a certain degree with high success. To me MFT gives a near film quality that I like, plus I'm already lugging around medium format film cameras, so the smaller kit is nice.
I use a Pentax *istDL from 2005 almost daily I can buy the camera for as low as $20.00 on Ebay it works fine I've owned the camera since new and legacy lenses can be acquired for reasonable prices as the lens mount has not changed since the 1970's
so right, but you have to say some words to the lenses. I think this is also important, cause the perfect lens will mostly have more influence to the pics then the camera.
