Definitely. I make food for people just for fun and they're always like "I'll pay you whatever you want!" And my mom thinks that I should take advantage of that. But I like to cook and bake for others because I like the look on their face when they taste it and they genuinely like it. It just makes me happy to see others happy.

@@probablynotdad6553 do you realize how long the hours are of a farmer? In harvest season, it can go to 15-20 hours in a row of back breaking work. There is no “I’m too sick to water the cows.” When you hear something out attacking your chickens, you go out and see. And then you barely make a profit. Being your own boss is really hard and it takes more discipline than makes sense for all life styles and personalities. And the next time you have mail delivered, drive your car on roads, or get a pay check in a legal tender, that’s the work of hundreds of people who work for someone else.

Same. Work a 9 to 5 in healthcare but always wanted to work for myself. I enjoy designing hand made jewelry, but that was the fun. Making something for a friend or family, but when it came to making 20 or more of the same item for sale the joy was gone. That meant it was a hobby and not a business. This happened to me with other projects too. Meanwhile for years I would write for fun but never thought about sharing it with others. One day my mom told me once again I should try writing as a career. This time I actually thought about it and got past the self-doubt. Thinking about writing for others has improved my writing style already and I've started sharing my writing with others. I had always heard if you do what you love the money will come. I spent years looking for that something and not realizing I was doing what I loved all along. One good thing is I have dozens of stories, some even series, my biggest problem picking which ones to do first. It's still fun.

I bake empanadas and cakes for my family and friends and when people taste them they always tell me i should sell them so i did for a time but eventually ask me for discounts here and there just because we know each other so i end up just baking out of trying to please them. I woke up one day hey i don't wanna sell my empanadas and cakes just so people can buy cheaper ones yet expect the best. Same reason I stopped studying photography or sharing that I do it as a hobby. I love taking pictures for the creativity and enjoyment factor. Then, others find out, and they ask me to do event photography, portraits and graduation pictures, etc. The ask is generally not for me and my enjoyment, nor profit. It's to undercut the prices of pros they refuse to hire and pay with the hope I wouldn't charge them because I'm not a studio or pro. I often don't bring my camera to family events and gatherings anymore because I end up being the event photographer rather than getting to enjoy my downtime with family or friends. I still enjoy photography...just on my own terms now.

Thanks for mentioning how it undercuts professionals! I’m just starting a business as a fine artist and I recently had a conversation with my friend’s partner who has been a part time DJ for a long time. She says sometimes she feels bad being part-time because she feels her lack of commitment harms others in her field by reinforcing the idea that it’s just a hobby job. When people think you love your job they want you to do it for free and it makes it so hard for creative professions. And it compounds that problem when there are part-timers and hobbyists who are willing to work for cheap or for free! As a part-time DJ she always insists on making every gig professional and charging fair market price. A lot of people hiring for weddings boohoo the cost of DJs or musicians but come on, weddings are expensive. If you’re going to drop $1,000 on flowers and then expect a DJ/musician/photographer to work the whole night for $100 you’re not seeing the artist as a human being with a career and bills to pay, and that’s very inconsiderate. So I appreciate your attitude towards keeping a hobby a hobby. I also understand how it can feel when people think if you can do one creative thing then you can do any of them lol. Taking your own pictures is one thing, wedding photography is a whole nother beast lol. And trying to do it when you don’t know how because someone asked you to usually makes everyone unhappy in the end. Like the amount of times I’ve been asked to create logos and posters…. I paint portraits and scenes with animals damnit I’m not a graphic designer lol. I volunteer with a non-profit and I grudgingly do the graphic stuff because the intern just cannot and I know they don’t have enough money to hire a designer but I don’t like it based on the principles I mentioned. And the stuff I make is amateurish lol. I refuse to do drawing and painting for free though because it is my livelihood and I feel the need to take on the System and fight the “paid in exposure” attitude. I’m so ready for “paid in exposure” to die lol. We have social media now, no one needs word-of-mouth exposure that I know of. It only advertises to other people who want free art. Anyways… professional pay for professional work and hobbies for personal fulfillment ❤️

This is how I felt about art. So true. Even if dozens of people say you’re good at a hobby and should monetize it doesn’t mean they know anything about business or that they have your best interest at heart… especially how draining it can be physically mentally and emotionally. This is a perfect example of when people stress self care. Thank you for spreading this message. Take care of you ❤️

I was very annoyed that everyone thought bc I like baking it was going to be my job in the future. No. I've tried selling cookies in my school and whatever joy I once got from that recipe is now tainted from memories of forcing myself through the process so I can deliver to my customers. @Dakarn
@Dakarn 2 года назад
@@basicbrittani Don't know how old you are, but it used to be that when a song pulled in millions of dollars, the label would take 80 to 85%. The manager would get their 10%, and the band got what was left after. So out of a million dollars, the band would wind up having to split $50,000 as their cut. It's why so many bands went on tour constantly. Because the merch and ticket sales directly benefited the band in the inverse way, where they got to keep the majority of the money.
@basicbrittani
@basicbrittani 2 года назад
@@Dakarn I’m 22 and you are 100% correct on the scams that happen in the music industry (A decade of being a collegiate and classically train musician runs you into a lot) Unfortunately the splits also exists within the contracts that you sign. That is why you *MUST* take your contract to a lawyer before signing to go over every aspect of it and ensure you don’t get jipped. Even those who sign up for American Idol and the Voice have to be careful as well because even those contracts have a clauses saying who you would be under as a production company and your record label that you would automatically sign to if you win. I think Kayne might be the best example of what can occur if you do not read your contract fully and rush in. there’s also a lot of discourse about people not owning the masters to their songs. So if A record label/production company was miss treating you as an artist and you get out your contract, you might find out that you have no rights to your old music that you recorded. We saw that with Taylor Swift. It’s all about reading your contracts and negotiating on them. You have to know your worth as an artist and stand firm on that. A lot of people are going down the route of independent artist but It tends to be less money and that hence the phrase starving artist. So there’s nothing wrong with signing with a company that works well with you and is willing to negotiate. Even then most the money you get is from touring and merch sales. even J. Cole can attest to that. Just because they have more money to promote a song doesn’t mean they’ve sold their soul to the devil though.
