True because your grades doesnt matter. The knowledge you bring into the real world matters. This video is what I've always instinctively felt deep down but was scared to adopt the mindset, because like most people I was pressured into "grind/hustle" perfectionist culture as well. I would feel inferior because I wasn't the 4.0 GPA, aced every exam, can study for 12 hours student, especially being in the competitive pre-med path. I really appreciate you putting this content out Matty. What I'm happy about myself and is proud to say is that I've always done things that made me happy and pursued people and endeavors that my heart desired. From now on I'm definitely going to remind myself that perfectionism isn't the thing to strive for, but a happy balance life while going after your dreams is. Cheers brother

I only study a couple hours a day and I still get mostly A's, a few B's. I just remember what I can from class and I'll focus my attention on anything I didn't understand. My focus with studying is less memorising and more understanding, then I'm less likely to forget everything after the test. I don't just want to pass, I want to understand the topic, and I've generally found that it's easier to learn by interacting with the topic by thinking about it, rather than just remembering phrases from a textbook.

For me, I'm not in college solely to get a job. I'm here to learn more of what I love and a happy consequence is that a degree will also render me more employable. So with that said, "good enough" isn't really a concept I can relate to. I just want to get an A in every course, since an A is an indicator that I've mastered the material. However, if I don't get an A, it's not like I've failed. I'm still learning if I get a C. So if I employed the concept of "good enough", that benchmark would be merely to not fail, which is not my ambition. Love the video though. I decided a while a go that I wouldn't be grinding anymore and I agree with lots of what you said, particularly about enjoying student life more.

When he said that he spent most of his childhood studying , that really hit home 😭I used to study soooo much in middle school so I could always get the best grades in my class and get better marks than that one boy (who I was obviously overestimating lol ), so I was always studying to get an A* and I wasn’t playing outside like other kids , when I could’ve just got an A- and saved tons of hours to go and play and live my childhood instead of studying for those extra few points that didn’t change anything ( I mean wtfrick was I doing studying all those hours in middle school ! It would make sense to do so in highschool since u need those marks to get into uni but middle school marks gave me nothing except for a missed childhood ). Now I’m in highschool and I’ve realised my mistake in middle school . So I’m trying to not spend hours just to get a few more points but to study to just get “good enough” like he said . I really regret not living my childhood and I’m not going to waste my teens doing nothing but studying just to get an A* instead of a an A-. Like he said “it sucks to look back and see that u forgot to live “ Thank u sooo much for making this video , I really needed it and it made me feel like someone understands me

I totally agree with everything you're saying. I had that problem in high school. Studying long hours, neglecting every other part of my life. And when I graduated with Honors and a scholarship, I still felt like I wasted my teenage years. Now that I'm in college, I'm trying alot more to live life and have other experiences outside of school, like meeting new people, working part time jobs, playing sports and joining clubs... I think it's totally worth it. If you want to have a balanced lifestyle and experience everything life has to offer, shooting for "Good Enough" is what you want to do. Also always remember that school isn't everything. Applying for part time jobs taught me that employers look for alot more than a diploma, so you could be the guy with 100% in school and still be rejected if there's someone with more work experience in your field.

It also helps when the top grad programs ask for high gpa or UK class honours. When it’s this competitive, it’s hard to let go of any small points you could ace.

Finally, a youtuber I can relate to. During my last year in middle school, I grinded to win the gold medal in the science bee. I studied the whole day, only sleeping for three hours. I got to win first place in our city but climbing up the stage during the awarding didn't make me happy. It was all not worth it. I got the recognition but it feels empty and unfulfilling.

im just in my high school you guys saved a lot of time of mine by like spaced repitition and active recall so thanks for that but the thing is i still study for the highest grade i possibly can get for no one to remember and ask after say a week or so ..... ive always been wondering bout this and ive been always been getting good grades since my childhood but now i have to sacrifice the time which i just used for having fun ...... the pressure of still achieving those grades just keeps increasing ...... i still study for like 7hrs a day after 4hrs of school to maintain those grades and live up to the expectations of everyone around me ...... it felt as if the future me was talking to me to just enjoy every moment...... :)

Yup that´s true, typical sign of "i did so much today or i did read so much" but it´s mostly ineffective work & passive Learning actively in my humble opinion is very hard to do for 8-10 hrs It´s just doable over the long + not healthy

Work smart, never hard. I'm glad you talked about this topic. We all strive for the best grades. What matters is getting the grade that satisfies the requirements to get onto the next level. Try your best, aim for the top, if you fall short then you will still have passed. BUT do not lose your sanity and peace in the process! Personally, I try my best, I now aim for progress. I've learned that tests vary upon circumstances. Some personal eg lack of prep or things happening in life, or the assessors eg questions not worded well or misleading, questions that cover topics which are not in the syllabus (you'll need surprised how often this occurs)

i absolutely love this video. I also had this realization last year during the lockdown. i was rlly forced to look inwards and think about the things that would matter to me at the end of my life. it’s morbid, but i feel that we need to be frequently reminded we will die. we will be forgotten, and we will be forced to look back at the way we spent the majority of our life time. did we spend it helping people? were we stressed for the majority of it? was any of the stress worth it? did we neglect the people we loved as a result of a professional endeavour? sometimes we’re so focused on perfecting the next step in our 5-year plan that we fail to realize that life extends far past our goals. i don’t want to look back on life and realize that my entire life and personality surrounded academia. i want to remember the laughter, the music, the good food, and the tears i shared with others in my life.

💯💯💯 spitting facts. Whats the point of life if you can't enjoy it and find meaningful experiences? Studying 24/7 can lead to good results, but at what cost? You will lose precious opportunities for making memories if all you do is about academia

I'm a 20 yo Electrical Engineering major that stumbled across your channel by chance. Outside, I play League(reached Masters this year, aiming for Challenger next year), Osu, and just started Valorant to enjoy time with my friends. Outside of my computer, I'm a Tricking Martial Artist and Breakdancer. I've always held good grades whether I tried or not, and college freshmen year I did significantly well in my classes...until second year quarantine zoom university. I've made new friends, gone through most of my Engineering lower divs. Half of them I've done really well on, and the other half not so much. Now that summer's almost over, I've realized that I've forgotten most of the information I've learned from zoom but if I were to relearn it I would have an easier time and I understand the concepts. One of my friends the other day asked me to help him on his physics final, to which I barely remembered much. I asked my other friends who had studied significantly more than I did to help my friend out and they stated they barely remember anything as well. The important factor is that I've developed personally strong studying habits through all sorts of hobbies and academics that allow me to learn at a faster rate than anyone else I've met while doing everything I've mentioned on the side. This video and my experience made me realize that the way I was living life now was much better than students that study all day long because I am able to enjoy myself and live healthily physically and mentally. At the end and in the future, at least I understand the concepts of what I learn for my future career endeavors. My friends and I plan on traveling together and exploring the world for a bit before settling into careers when we're all graduated, and I would assume by that time none of us would even care about our physics grade. We'd be more focus on our life in front of us instead :D

I was a student athlete in college and I was mentally and physically drained. I kept telling myself that grad school will be better because I can just dedicate all my time towards studying. Now I just finished my first summer term of occupational therapy school and realized I’m doing the exact same thing that made me burnout and unhappy by spending hours of studying and trying to “please” professors. I’ve come to the conclusion that the pace that I am going is not sustainable for me and I want to be in this for the long haul and to do that I have to enjoy my life and stop striving for perfection because perfection is toxic and it doesn’t exist. Thank you for your great content. You all are helping so many people ♥️

The final part of this video is what I tell everybody at school. Way too many people are focusing too much only on studying and sometimes forget that there even is a life outside of school. I always tell them to live YOLO but in an regulated way. You never know when something will happen to you so just live your life if the choice is between getting 1 grade more or follow your passion please follow your passion. I realized this when I had a 2 week holiday about a year ago. I literally did nothing all day, i didn't even know what to do outside of school and I wasn't even the type of person to study all day. In that moment I realized that I had to stop prioritizing school over everything. This also because the more you don't have passions the more you dream about the things you could be doing rather than studying which makes you less productive and you end up spending the whole day doing nothing and not even having enough to time to study which is LITERALLY THE THING YOU JUST GAVE YOUR DAY AWAY FOR! Thanks for reading all of this. And always remember, you can have bad days, just don't make it a bad week because it WILL escalate into a bad month. So yeh, this is it, you only live once, but remember you probably will have a future awaiting for you and you want to be prepared. Yolo but regulated....

Life is happening now ,and not at the end of the marathon🥲🥲🥲 that hit really hard🥲🥲🥲 As an asian student I was told that once you finish your GCE Ordinary level exam you will get three whole month vacation so put your effort now and study hard for it , and on the last day itself of O/Level examination we were given brochures containing tons of information about Advanced level tution and forced to attend them disregarding the vacations . Then we were told that once we are done with Advanced levels you are just free to do anything in life so put your total effeort and in the end you'll find peace once u enter a university so here I am currently studying for Alevels and not focusing on any "fun stuff " onlu believing that" Peace " will come soon but deep down I know seeing our depressed elder sisters and brothers at universities that Peace is just an illusion🥲🥲🥲🥲

This hit home for me. I remember during the semester, I would actually skip lunch just to get another hour in to study. My grades improved, but all the other aspects of my life diminished (diet, exercise, relationships). Another channel called "Captain Sinbad" recently put out a video about Theodore Roosevelt's daily routine. He was considered one the most productive persons out their, but if you see his schedule, he would only dedicate 4hrs to study, but during those 4hrs he would focus intensely on work (Parkinson's Law) and the rest of his day was filled with hobbies. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9cj8TkwA1m4.html (10 min vid) This is probably my favorite video from your channel, just because I 100% relate! I became the grinding guy when I was at engineering…I learned to not study for the exam and started to ask the right questions in my head and moving everything to look for answers…i became the head physics teacher's little wonder bird under her wind…now I QUIT Engineering and now studying Advertising and Digital Media…lost motivation on Mechanical Engineering but I’m really hoping to have a great first semester in the new career…engineering is very exhausting if you want to be The Ace…it is not enough to have potential…failure there can get you stuck…I would really advice everyone to really think about what are your skills, what are you good or great at, what you suck at, and what really pulls your heart…don’t have two options and pull the trigger on one of them just because it won’t bug your parents…fight for what you want…even fucking scream at your parents if it is needed for them to understand your choice, but fight for your passion…and if everything goes back to blank paper it is ok…get your to explore and learn cuz new goals will come to your mind…don’t worry

I finally feel seen. I have always felt insecure about the amount of time I've spent studying compared to my peers. Was I wrong to feel that studying too much was pointless? What was the point of trying to score 100% when all i needed was a 75% or and 80%? That is Good enough.

I agree with enjoying every aspect of life besides only studying. However, being the best one in the field takes extra effort and the result pays you very well by increasing your value. If your end goal is hard to achieve and have a high competition you may have to apply a loads of efforts maybe 15 hours of study daily who knows. It depends on whether you are happy with whatever you are doing or not. Remember, Output = time × focus

This hit me so hard. I come from middle but I go to one of the most expensive schools in my country. my parents sent my to the school because going for any other school is basically the same thing as not going to school ( constant strikes). I always struggle with school but don't know who to talk to since everyone in my family expects me to be a top student and get a scholarship. This expectation is kind of killing me because I don't know who to talk or what to do

Definitely something I learned in high school. Everyone around me was so focused and studying so hard when I didn't do as much. Felt pressured to do more and then eventually I realized, why am I working so much? I changed my learning method, the way I do things, and though I didn't get a high grade, I did have a life as you mentioned. Just doing enough feels better than doing too much just for that number and to be on top.

SO TRUE I always get good grades in high-school and even in college, and this has caused me to have that perfectionism attitude whereby I must perform just as well in any upcoming exams. Therefore, I have spent most of my free time studying and feeling miserable. I really hope one day I can just get myself to do "just enough", so that I can have more time to enjoy life in my 20s, and most importantly, feel fulfilled.

This is exactly what I plan to do when I go into college, all I need is to just do good enough and instead of over studying I would work and put my income into investments so that I’d reach financial freedom sooner, it’s not like I have something I’m extremely passionate about to the point of where I would be happy to work for the rest of my life. All I want is to be able to see, experience and live life instead being confined in an office for the rest of my life thinking about bills I have to pay, utilities to pay and how I wish I could just not be stuck in a 9-5 cycle worrying about my salary.

I still go to school (last year, Italy) and I usually get pretty good grades so It's not like I'm super lazy about studying but when you introduced the concept of "good enough" it opened my eyes, in a good ways. I was already trying to approach studying in a rational way and without anxiety really giving it only the time that I was willing to give because of my own decisions, but I had never thought about the god enough benchmark.
