Why I think I was Rejected from Oxford University // An Honest Rejection Q&A Part 2.

Hey guys!! So here it is: part 2. 💛 I highly recommend you watch the first video dissecting my rejection first, but here I am answering some more Qs about being rejected from Oxford University last year (for Biological Sciences!). After receiving feedback from the interviewers, I chat about why I think I was rejected, discuss having a back up plan and having your confidence knocked post-rejection. I hope this can help someone out. ✨ I think it's important that we talk about and normalise these "failures" just as much as the positive times! x
Part 1, Dealing with Rejection: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZsiFa-y24y8.html
You are not defined by an institution. 🌟 In some ways, I think I learnt more from this rejection than I ever would have done from a direct acceptance. Bigger and better things, ma friends. Lots of love x x

The application advisor at my school always told us that applying for a deferred place at oxbridge reduces your chance of an offer by about half, so I’d imagine that did have quite a big impact. But the gap year was definitely the right path for you so there’s no point overthinking that decision! ❤️
@teamcori
@teamcori 5 лет назад
lucytansley That's good to know, I recently got rejected and also applied for deferred entry. I requested feedback and so it would be interesting to see what they say.
@MD-wy9zm
@MD-wy9zm 5 лет назад
Couldn't she apply, get in, then ask to defer? Or is that not possible in the UK?
@user-ql1ng1xn6s
@user-ql1ng1xn6s 5 лет назад
M D No normally you have to tell the university when you apply because it’s like you’re reserving a space at the university, so especially if their acceptance rates are low it’s like you’re either in now or not. There’s also the loss of knowledge in the subject over a year that the university wouldn’t really want, which is why in STEM subjects specifically it’s advised not to take a gap year because it lowers your chances at an offer

What you said about cancer, is so true. My mum passed away on 23rd December 2015, when I was just 13. I find it is better to speak about death, rather than shy away and not address it. I am very open about her passing and I will sometimes bring it up in conversation so that I won’t be sad constantly, not with the intention of changing the mood or asking for sympathy as that is so wrong. People need to speak about these topics so that they can be happy and content. It’s worse if you only think about a relative who has passed and not address their death as you won’t be able to get over it and it will always linger behind you. I know I will never forget my mum but I don’t want her death to overshadow the rest of my life. I have a life to live and I know that my mum would have wanted me to carry on thriving and she wouldn’t want me to not fulfil my life.

You have been instrumental in me dealing with how my interviews went (badly), as I think of you as a very intelligent person and someone who is already successful and I'm sure will go on to do incredible things, so it gives me hope that Oxford definitely isn't the only route to success. I find it so fascinating that you initially had your heart set on Oxford (one of the oldest, most steeped in tradition schools) and later found yourself at Minerva- an institution that challenges the traditional model. Thanks for sharing so honestly in this video. Know that if you wish to do a post grad, you could always apply there again. I read somewhere once that when we hear no, it’s possible that we might be hearing “not yet”. All the best for uni!

I'm 14 and i just did my KCPE exams (i'm Kenyan) and I did not do well according to my standards since I'm used to getting all As(400 out of 500) and I got 361(B) I was devastated my teachers wanted us to cheat in our NATIONAL EXAMS and I refused to So I did much worse than a lot of my classmates and to add insult to injury my twin (who also did not cheat) was the third highest in the school(all As and one B plus). Long story short I released that not meeting peoples expectations does not make me a failure and I did my best in the situation. Thank you so much for this video. Because it proves a) hard work really does get you to great places even if you don't expect it at first. b) That talented smart, wonderful,people from all over the world get disappointed and failure is more universal than we think so thank you PS: I''m sorry this is so long. I'm also 18 and on a gap year after being medically disqualified from the United States Military Academy at West Point this past July. It's so awesome to see someone else the same age also in the same boat as me, and just watching some of your videos, it's evident that you've grown tremendously from just the past several months. I've grown more in the past 5 months than I have in any other time period in my life, and I really do think my disqualification and this gap year is a blessing in disguise. On rejection, this gap year has also given me a bit more perspective on college. I was just rejected from Yale last week (my reaction is on my channel), but I now realize more than ever that I am not defined by the school I go to, it's what I do and who I am as a person that matters the most. It's refreshing to see someone else also be able to handle rejection so maturely. Keep the videos coming, Jade! I look forward to following your journey on your gap year just as I'm filming mine on my channel! Work hard, dream big -Raye

Top UK universities do tend to prefer really 'focused' candidates who know their field inside out, but I'm glad you regained your confidence eventually because there's so much more to being a person than knowing everything about one's field! I definitely don't know that much about my own field compared to my peers, but we all have diverse strengths anyway. I doubt many of the other candidates who may have been much more well-read on biology would've necessarily had the well-roundedness you have, your unique personal insight, communicative skills, etc. Being a youtuber who films and edit videos in itself is a pretty niche skill. Hope you get to celebrate your idiosyncratic strengths and am glad you didn't let this define you :-)

I know I've had my fair share of failures and it helped me. Sometimes I think we are just meant to fail so that we go on to do something we might not otherwise have done but like you say, at the time, we feel so bad about ourselves, as if we are not capable and are never going to accomplish anything in life. I believe all of us have a part to play in life though, we don't neccessarily have to go on to study at the best institutions or have big jobs. Yeah, I feel you. I loved meeting the people at Trinity, but talking and being there did make me feel poorly read! 😂 I met lots of lovely people doing all sorts of subjects. I feel like I need to read more books now, so I'm going to do that over the summer. I got at least three new book recommendations, so I need to explore those! I tried not to boast about my interviews, but I do feel that my interviews went brilliantly, and I talked about it openly. I wasn't boasting about it or pushing it, but I did talk about it openly.

@nananini2273
@nananini2273 5 лет назад
Maite L hi! I’m a second year IB student and I’d advise to go against doing IB. As much as it’s advertised to make “well-rounded” students, it’s an EXTREMELY (arguably the most) difficult curriculum that requires lots of rigor and work and leaves you with little free time whatsoever since there is ALWAYS something to do - no matter how ‘easy’ your subjects are. if you’re applying to the UK, I highly recommend doing A levels where you have loads of free time and more than half the work is gone but gets the same credibility (somehow). IB students need to do “theory of knowledge” “extended essays” which counts towards 3 points and requires extreme work just to get an A on each of these components ( a 2 year process for 2 essays - one is 4,000 words on chosen subject and the other around 2,000 on a question out of 6 that IB gives to you). On top of this, we have internal assessments for each subject which is essentially a research paper for each subject around 12 pages each that is only months of time of work and is 20% of your grade so you must get the highest grade possible otherwise you can’t achieve the highest grade in your external exams and it’s also very hard to do this too. and most IA’s are all at the same time, on top of your extended essay and your theory of knowledge presentations and essays. this doesn’t count all the content you need to cover across 6 subjects. Compare this to a levels and it sounds like a dream - we all wish we did it. Out of over 100 students in my year group, no one believes ib is worth it, it is also only credible if you do well which is just as hard. A levels provides a much better basis and is so much less stress - I think IB causes bad health issues because of how hard it is. Although we are more equipped for university essays and * somewhat * handling time, I’d rather do a levels and get good grades because of the content covered and how much less it is instead of being forced to do a language, math, English, a science and social science when not everyone wants to do these things. And some might say it offers more variety for choosing career paths but this is untrue because all universities have requirements for higher level subjects, (3) like the requirements needed for a levels also 3 but only 3. so not something to be advocated because it is not true. this is a bit of a rant but i wish more people knew this information because we were all misinformed. a levels - good grades - good uni where you can practice essay work ib - bad grades unless all time is put into it - bad / no uni - essay skills that are useless to you i hope this informed you :) ahahahaha
@ailbhenoonan819
@ailbhenoonan819 5 лет назад
@@maitel1705 Oof... honestly, the IB is one of the most stressful things I've ever done, but to me at least it's worth it. I've learned and grown so much in these past two years from everything - I feel like my brain has just exploded! I will warn you, it will probably be the hardest thing you do in terms of education, and you'll wish you'd taken the easy way out, but stick with it, it's worth it in the end. IB is more rigorous than A-Levels from what I've understood: there's more to do, especially in HLs, and we have a million tasks to do all at once at any given moment. It requires extremely good time management and determination, but if you stick to it, it is possible. Personally, I'm behind on almost everything at the moment (I B stressed...), but I have friends who are on top of everything. And despite what IB students may say, it is entirely possible to still have a social life and still sleep... you might just be hanging with IB students and sleeping 6-7 hours a night. XD IB students love to complain, but really, if you're willing to put in the effort and work, then it's 100% doable. IB is more like taking a pre-uni course than a "leaving school" course, especially at HL, so be prepared for intense rigour and depth. IB will challenge you like nothing ever has before, unless you grew up with the IB system. It will explode your mind, teach you new languages, and change the very way you see the world, but I think personally that's a good thing. My ESS course has taught me so much about how the world works, IB English Lang/Lit actually inspired me to study English at uni, and History HL has given me such a different insight into the past and current events that I feel can't be gotten anywhere else. It will teach you to think analytically and critically (beware of TOK - it WILL blow your mind!), and you'll become a totally different person. TL;DR: IB will shatter your worldview, change your brain around, and give you so much stress, but in the end, it's worth it... at least to me. ;) It's like nothing you've ever done before, so be prepared to have your world changed.

I think owning it makes you so strong. I failed my first year of law school last year and I redid it this year. Every time someone asked me what I was studying I had to tell them about it (because the next question is always 'in what year are you?') And I hated it so much.

Hey Jade, I really like your videos! By the time you got rejected, I got rejected too (not for Oxford though). I had to search for new options and decided to take quite a different path and got my acceptance letter this week! I think it's a much more suitable degree for me, so I guess sometimes it's good, when stuff doesn't work out

Thank you so much for this video, I am in year 11, and I took an entry exam to get a scholarship to a really fancy private school for sixth form, and I got asked back for an interview, but I decided not to go so I emailed them to withdraw my application. Sometimes I regret that decision and I feel selfish for turning down such a great opportunity, but I didn't feel good about myself when I went there. Two people got in from my school, and sometimes I find myself comparing myself to them, and thinking I am too dumb and would've never got in, but now I feel that everything happens for a reason. I know that our stories are quite different, Oxbridge is a lot bigger and so much more effort goes into it, and I can't even begin to imagine the devastation you must've felt, but I agree that it isn't healthy to doubt yourself, and happiness and personal growth are so much more important, keep doing what you're doing, you're such a beautiful soul x

I was in the same situation as you last year. Got an interview at Queen's college for Classics and got rejected- it hurt when I saw the email eventhough I already knew I hadn't been accepted in as my interviews went horribly. It was made even worse when my head of year announced to my year that I was waiting on a response from Oxford before I got my rejection so it was tough. But I didn't let it stop me- and even after spending a week at Oxford I realised that it wasn't the university for me so in a way I'm sort of relieved I got rejected because I'm so much happier at my current university than I know I would have been at Oxford. Plus at least I do get to say that I had an interview at Oxford and still attend one of the best universities in the UK. Rejection is always going to be a big part of life and learning to pick yourself up again is important because it's not the end of the world. At all.

I trained to be a teacher, it was a life long ambition only to realise the reality was far tougher than I imagined, I left after 18months. I was devastated. Looking back now, it was the best decision I ever made. For anyone going through hardship, especially if you are young, please do not be impulsive. Things can change in an instant, you have no idea. Be flexible in everything you do because there will be a time when things are not so tough … and you deserve to enjoy them.

I feel like whenever you are rejected from a university, it happens for a reason. It's not that you are 'no good', you simply aren't suited for that university. Like imagine if that uni took you in just out of sympathy, you would literally struggle in the uni and possibly hate it because of how much it isn't your style. For example let's say you want to go to Harvard because it is the best school in the world, not because you like it or anything, but just because of the ratings it is defined by. Let's say you are an artistic person (whether it be liberal or design-wise), and let's say you somehow got into Harvard. You might absolutely hate it when you are taking your course because of how hard and demanding it is, and you are not academic, but the school is SUPER ACADEMIC (and you are more inclined to extracurricular activities/experience than studying academically). I hope this made sense!! I think everyone should realise this~
