I have been wanted this breath controller for a while. This video really showed me how to use it but also the differance between fader/breath controller. Great video. Love the content!
thank you for telling composers to actually play music. without getting to[o] into it. i wrote a thesis studying the performance practice of pianists in the late 19th C. back then improvisation was crucial to how they introduced new repertoire. and what i came across is that it was virtually unheard of (unintended pun) to see a composer who didn't play something. it's crazy to me to see now how many composers don't even play an instrument.
Looooove my breath controller. As a brass player it is the most logical way for me to program modulation. And it helps hide some of my terrible keyboard skills!

Great video! I also use that device exactly as you do but I really recommend trying out some modeled instruments with it. If you think it is expressive with sample libraries wait till you use it with audio modeling‘s wind instruments or other similar libraries!
Looking at this as a non-musician (well, out of practice I suppose) , this looks like a neat tool to set up macros with. Like having a whistle to command your computer.
Thanks Zach. I also have a TEC BBC breath controller. When it comes to strings, have you experimented with the "head tilt" controller for controlling CC1 and/or CC11? I also combine the "bite control" feature for vibrato - so you get a tilting head for modulation and a bite to add vib. Sure you look like Stevie Wonder with a migraine but it works quite well!
Hi@@dbmusicproductions9181, I can't profess total expertise with the TEC controller and I don't use it as a matter of course. That said, I don't think the extra weight would be noticeable (given that I don't know what it would be like without it. I only know the TEC with the bite controller so that's my only reference point). It takes a bit of bending and twisting the holder/frame to feel comfortable and well balanced. If you don't get this right, it can sometimes feel a little awkward in the mouth but with some patience it works out just fine. I wouldn't say the bite controller is a game-changer. It's just another CC you can control in real-time so it's more flexible, but if you don't have it, you could simply play in any other CCs after the fact. Hope that helps...
This is a super sweet tool! Definitely considering adding this to my arsenal. Btw - I adore my DT 990's. Most comfortable and transparent headphones I've ever had.
Hi Zach. Really appreciate this demo. I've been watching many video's about the bbc1. I am wondering why you chose the bbc1 instead of the bbc2 which adds nod and tilt? Unless you had bought that before the bbc2 was released. In that case which one would you recommend. I'm learning to compose for movie, media, and video games.
Today it arrived, but I still don't know how to connect it to my Tyros 3. I think it has to go via a PC and a specialized App? Any help on that would be greatly appreciated, Joh from Australia
Hi Zach, great video on the breath controller. I struggle with the modwheel on my keyboard, short throw and always a jerky looking pattern to fix, so looking for another option. Question though, do you ever use expression CC7 along with modulation CC1? Or just CC1 only? Thx!
Thank you for sharing this! I have a breath controller with an 1/8" jack that I used to use with a MIDI keyboard that had a breath controller input that I no longer have. Do you know if there is an interface that would make it useable for me? Thank you!
I have similar questions. I am already convinced of a breath controller's usefulness, but I don't know how to make to make the necessary connections. I have a DX7s keyboard but Yamaha's original BC1 controller is no longer in production. Wondering if I can use this TEC controller with my DX7s instead.
Hi Zach! Thanks for your excellent videos! I discovered you from Mattia's channel and love what you do too! I was wondering what happens to the controller input when you breathe. Does it go down to zero or does it stop where it was when you stopped breathing into it?
I've had this exact same breath controller for a year now and have never been able to get it to connect to my DAW. Instructions on getting the DAW to recognize it and connect are non-existent online. So now it just hangs unused on a hook on my desk.
Thank you for your video! every needed! I woudl ike to ask you if can be used as simple as connect it directly with the piano that has usb? or it requires use of computer and other sofware? I would like to try it with a casio, but not sure if it is allow me that. Thank you in advanced.
Zach, I purchased this same breath controller about 2 years ago. I could never figure out how to set it up in the instruments in Logic Pro. So, it’s been collecting dust. Also, how do you get the virtual instruments in your template to sound so good? I think I’m doing something wrong. I have VSL Special Editions. When I’m trying to record midi I can barely hear the instruments, and they really don’t sound like their characteristic instruments. Sorry to ask all of these questions but you seem to have videos that I can follow along and understand so I thought that I would ask. Many people on RU-vid or these “online courses “ skip a lot and assume things that people like me don’t know. And asking for help in the forums is almost like asking to be ridiculed for what you don’t know. I just thought I would ask.
Hey Jon, that's a HUGE question worth hours of material and years of practice. MIDI realism happens over time through lots of trial and error, listening and imitation, and learning your software. This video might help as a starting point for you: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7lzJ6aIs_kE.html Hope it helps as a launching pad 👍🏻
Hey a I had a quick question for you. I got a Mac Mini recently and want to start to record different songs BUT can’t find software that records the internal audio where you can also hear it. My question is what screen recording software do you use?
