How do you run so many plug ins without pro tools crashing? What computer do you use? I use a macbook pro 2015 with 16gb of ram and i7. I have max buffer size and external ssd and would never be able to run that many plug ins. If you could help I would appreciate it so much! I run my own recording studio and I always feel limited by how many plug ins I can use.
Great job explaining this bro. That r vox is indeed a gem for presence. I actually used it for a kick just something subtle to help the kick push through before I started mixing.🔥🔥🔥
This video opened my eyes... I learned too much compression was a big no no but what should really matter is the final product, there are so many different ways to approach a vocal and seeing someone use three compressors on just one vocal is eye opening.. In college, NOBODY will tell you to use more than one compressor, two is almost a taboo and this is what they teach in school...
bro, thank you... fr fr, i have learned SO MUCH from you N i just wanna say how grateful i am to get access to this information and techniques. really appreciate u man, i wont forget you when i get where im going n people wanna ask me where my skillset came from...YOU bro. thanks again. (i have watched all of your videos WAYYY more than 1 time...pshhh, probably more than 10 times each video, n i keep coming back to solidify the skills.)
I dig how you're always animated and energetic in your breakdowns of your processes and explanations. It helps clarify things that would be kind of difficult to understand otherwise. We need you out there. Keep up the awesome work big brotha.!!!
17:29 How do you get those stereo vocals? Please do a video on how to get great backup vocals like yours because your adlibs and dubs are so fire. Please do a video how to do it and different ways to do it. Can you make the video long too because I feel like a lot of people want to know this too. Thankyou!🙏🏾
Does my ears need to also pick up frequencies and volume Quickly? Because when he bypasses the plugins it seems so rapid. And Im starting to think Im slow. I mean I could barley hear the difference. LOL.
No matter what I do I can’t get the clear high end in my vocals like it sounds in major artist drops. I got $500 and over a stack in preamp and outboard cla2A HELPP😢
Devvon....I want to say a huge THANK YOU for doing all these amazing educational videos!! I recently purchased a new home studio and am literally sitting here with pen and pad TAKING NOTES like I'm in a college classroom! You are dropping GEMS in every video! By the time I'm done watching all your videos I'll probably have an entire folder full of notes haha! THANK YOU! Are your plugin packages available for Adobe Audition?
I used to follow you really closely when I was 16, like 6 years ago. Was new to music in general and your stuff helped me through some tough times, staying excited about the world. Fast forward to now, I'm 22 and never in a million years imagined I'd be making ym own music, but I'm here now. Imagine my surprise to see that you have your own established channel as you work to build yourself up as a musician!! I can't express how amazing and inspiring finding this was for me today. Your music was always an inspiration in the past, and now as a novice making music I feel lost. But seeing how committed you are means more to me than anything on the beginning of this journey. Thank you so, so much brother🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽. Keep on going!
Speaking of a Compressors tone; Im amazed at the difference between the VCA's, FET's, Opto & Digital Logic Compressors that are so doggone district from one another. (Once again in Logic Pro) The use of Soft Distortion on Drums is been a life saver on the tracks that ive been making. How is it that these Compressors sound so incredibly different from one another with some basically trashing the sound. Noticing that out of the 7 Types of Logic Compressors there is usually one thats the proper tone for the drums. It must have really been expensive back when in analog, if different colours & compressor tones varied so much as in Logic's representation of them if they aren't simply exaggerated their tones?
That’s a great question, I would even ask in a general sense. Do you process background vocals/ad-libs, the same as lead ones ? In terms of : EQing, Compressing, De-Essing...
@@obryanmiezan8192 I process mine different from the lead. I take out more on the low-end when EQing my backs and most times on my libs to allow my lead to be more centered
@@lilkenny83 Would only make sense to take out the lows I guess ? Since they fulfill a different function in the entire track. But I meant in more as, apart from EQing differently, background vocals are still undergoing that : cleaning frequencies, leveling, controlling dynamics, adding colors etc... Or do you do less ? If you’ve watched his videos about obtaining a ‘ X artist ‘ vocal sound, you’ll see Devvon have a specific pattern for mixing vocals
@@obryanmiezan8192 from the videos I've watched and veteran engineers I communicate with, the chain is more than not generally the same, if that's what you mean

I think you are confusing everyone with your slower attack and fastest release theories! What is exactly slower attack and fast release you need to understand first.
I don't get it. It turns out that to hear these subtle nuances, we need to train our ears and listen carefully on good acoustics in the studio. But then why do we need them, because when we listen to songs through our iPhones, we enjoy the words and the music? Isn't just good basic mixing enough?
Why do you try to control the peaks with the first compressor but literally avoid the peaks with the slow attack and fast release???? I do not understand that. If I want to get the peaks, I would try a fast attack. Isn‘t it right?
@@darianjohnston1658 No, he said he wants to let the transient through before it's compressed but mainly uses the first compressor to boost the gain on the quiet parts
Do you use the vocal fader to level the vocal after getting it to a solid level through compression, or do you just leave the fader untouched and rely solely on compression?
Great video Devvon!! Thank you for taking your time to do them. I have one doubt about your technique, should you use the 3 compressors always sequentially or it depends? Also, do you do subtractive and or additive eq before those 3 compressors? Thanks for your wisdom!
Wow this helped me big time. Especially with rnb type vocals in my opinion. Especially with the CLA compressor. How u could keep the dynamics a good amount with the attack and release and still good a good volume.
