I really enjoy your videos. Im 72 years old and just beginning my journey with Bonsais. I have many years growing Neofinetia Orchid Japanese Wind Orchids I’ve purchase a couple of 10 to 15 year Bonsais to use as examples to develop my own and to sharpen my skills. I will concentrate on outdoor trees able to thrive in Central Florida. My last comment is to personally Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience to the World.

Agree I would not propagate juniper from seed, but then I had to smile remembering that impatience is antithetical to the essence of bonsai. A few years ago I bought a palm-of-the-hand black pine that had been propagated 35 years earlier from a seed in Japan. Its backstory was important to me. I remember seeing a picture of a crabapple styled by Peter Chan propagated from a seed picked up in a public garden in England. I have noticed that sometimes the older we get we are drawn to collecting seeds from botanic gardens. Enjoyed the Q&A . . . thanks! I too like the chicken litter pellets, except the smell.

Thanks for the reply and advice. I've done this many times before too, but my lawn is full of this moss. It looks like it's spreading seed all over the place from there. But I will be much more careful now that I know I have to act quickly. With all due respect, thank you again.

I know I'm repeating myself, but I really like your philosophy and it confirms my own approach. Your approach of not slavishly adhering to tradition and instead going your own way that suits your nature is exactly what I prefer. Because Bonsai is an art that everyone has to discover for themselves. Just as not every painter or sculptor follows the same strict rules, but instead develops their own style and thus becomes unique.

Thank you for sharing your bonsai philosophy. I’m adopting your techniques especially the soil mixture. As a long time gardener I think the mix you use makes so much sense. I watched your videos all winter, purchased a nursery juniper at half price after Christmas and now trying my best not to kill it.

I appreciate your approach to growing bonsai in a dry climate. Please keep giving us these tips since very little of the US is tropical jungle. As you have mentioned, I also seem to need a potting soil that will retain moisture and fertilizer. I still water at least every other day. I also prefer plastic pots when a tree is developing a heathy mat of roots because more moisture is retained. Keep up the good work.

Hey Milton, I love your videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Any experience with pomegranate trees? I plan to grow this sapling in a big pot and air layer until it gets to the thickness I want.

Good idea. Yes, I know a lot about pomegranate. Please view the garden tour last week fore my 100 year old tree. I will do a thorough discussion on pomegranate trees. For now, let the branch grow long, because the tree flowers art the end,..,.Hopefully you get some female flowers, then you cut off the rest and let the fruit form. Have fun! My idea now is to work a group of trees of the same kind, but of different age, and give a thorough discussion of that sp.

Thank you for another amazing video Mr. Chang! Have you ever had any success with juniper cuttings in winter? I tried making cuttings with some trimmings from winter pruning but had no luck.

Time...leaf size reduces with raminfication...also choose maple trees with small leaves to start. For example Ozakazuki has the most beautiful red fall color, but leaves are huge...so you have to make those into huge bonsai for scale.

Please don’t throw away those beautiful pieces of wood, although they didn’t live as a bonsai there’s a huge community of people with aquariums and vivariums who pay good money for pretty pieces of wood to grow plants and moss on in their tanks!! I would love a bonsai tree “growing” out of my fish tank. Beautiful

May I ask a few question possibly for your next QA? 1) For your outdoor trees, how do you keep the soil from being displaced during rain storms? 2) if you use the moss powder to establish ground cover, will that hold the soil in place during rain storms? Sincerely Bruce

Bonsai pots are usually above the soil line. If your tree is not on a slope, soil is not washed away but compacted. Moss can hold soil somewhat if your garden is not on a steep slope. Usually people use grass instead of moss or even juniper on a steep slope.

OOO! thank you! I have asked several times what to do with the moss that wants to cover everything. Now you have shown what needs to be pulled out - Irish moss. And this one is growing in my pots. It is very difficult to exterminate and it blooms and multiplies very quickly. Maybe you have some advice how to destroy this nuisance. Thanks for the wonderful videos and tips.

What I do is to remove the entire top layer of soil. Over it with new soil...adn be VERY vigilant in ulling out the seedling as I have show in this vcideo. In fact, I have NO more irsh moss problem! Goodluck!

The trees in my yard don't have root ball. It's all taproot, oaks and cedar elms. Oaks are harder to keep alive as a matter of fact I don't have oak yamadori 😅. Thanks for the tip and cutting around slowly.

Thank you so much for your videos! I've been fascinated with this form of art for decades, and decided to start doing something about it instead of just admire it. I have a weeping birch I planted almost 30 years ago. It is only about 5 feet tall and maybe 7 inches around at the base (the moose have done a great job pruning it!). I'd like to turn it into a bonsai, but have no idea how to start doing that. Any (and all) education and tips would be muchly appreciated!

Spring is a great time to transplant. Just do not et roots dry out. Birch loves water. When in doubt, plant it in an over size pot to start...have fun!

I can't force fit! I tend to go with the flow. Take advantage of the exiting flow to make into any of the above styles. :)

Se[arate when the tree can be handled...Not urgency so long as the roots got so big that it jams the pot.

What do you think of adding mineral grit to the bonsai mix? From my research it is suppose to add the micronutrients that sometimes our mixes miss. I make my own mixes also. Bonsai soils to expensive for me. Just a thought.

Sure...you must mean micronutrients like what is in commercial fertilizer.

@@bonsaiheirloom It is a rock dust that adds trace minerals to the soil. Azomite is one of them and Andesite Mineral Complex. Not a fertilizer, so to say. Just a thought.

I'm sure you have gone over your soil mixes. But I can't find it. Here in central valley california it's difficult to keep moisture with non organic bonsai soil. I noticed the trees in the potting soil grow more vigorously. But my trees in traditional mix struggle. Is there a happy medium.

Отсутствие забора - может, и эстетично, но крайне неудобно. Дети и домашние питомцы тогда отправляются в свободный полет. Забор нужен фкнкционально, это не декорация ))
