Why I wear GLOVES. The real reason... (my journey of dealing with Focal dystonia)

"Why do you wear gloves?" is a really commonly asked question across all of our platforms, and truth be told, I don't always do a good enough job at telling that story, and how it ties into this RU-vid channel and the SBL Academy.
But with the recent release of "The Devine King Project Volume 1", my first solo album, I felt it was a good time to talk about it, especially because the gloves also play into why I've waited so long to actually put out any music of my own.

I am a clinical psychologist that works in traumatic brain injury rehabilitation. This is not something I have encountered but I will pass this along to my PT and OT colleagues. One incidental benefit for your audience is, when you're teaching, the white gloves help to highlight where your fingers are on the frets! So happy for you and grateful that the glove correct the issue, seemingly like eye glasses correct eyesight. We love ya brother!

Dystonia is *very* common following severe brain trauma, typically affecting areas on the right side of the body: hand, foot, neck/upper back and jaw. There is a great deal of literature on the topic.

Agreed. The white gloves work great for a teaching scenario whereas if I were playing live in a club, I'd probably opt for a more subtle neutral look or even black gloves.

I shared the old video of your diagnosis and solution with my physician wife. Years later, she saw a patient who was exhibiting a focal dystonia, but the patient was really only annoyed that she couldn't apply makeup anymore. My wife remembered your video, put a nitrile exam glove on the woman's hand, and to her surprise the dystonia subsided. Huge win for the patient, thanks to your sharing!

Hey Scott, I'm a professional jazz pianist and I've had severe focal dystonia since I graduated college in 2017. I took 3 years off playing, and during that time I moved to NYC to study the Taubman Approach with Edna Golandsky. I completely left my old technique in the past, and I had to stop any of the movements that caused symptoms (isolated finger movements for example) both on and off the piano. Since 2021 I've been back to gigging, and I sure do appreciate it now more than ever before! Currently recording my 2nd album with my trio and some horn players on certain tracks. I 100% relate to what you said about not feeling good having everything riding on one or two recording days back to back. For this reason, I've spent the past few years building a home studio to record in so I can take all the time I need (among other reasons!). No gloves for me, and I definitely have FD still, but I've learned how to do what I need to do on and off the piano without those movements. I've changed how I type, hold a cup, shake hands with folks, and more. The good thing about solving it this way is that when I play with 100% correct technique, I have crazy endurance because it feels effortless. The hard part is trying to stay 100% without going back to any old habits while in the moment improvising haha. Definitely still on the journey. I'd be happy to chat sometime more about it if you're curious. Cheers.

You really are an inspiration Scott! The fact that you did not give up on what you love and found a life hack to continue playing is amazing within itself, but to also creat SBL, which is without a doubt one of the greatest educational music platforms in existence. Well that just goes to show how much you love people. To take the time that you can play, and use it to educate. I know there are many of us that are grateful for the site. So thank you!!! And the album is fantastic!!!!!!!!

As a longtime, lifelong subscriber and supporter of SBL and the Team at SBL, kudos for this video!!!! I can't imagine how many times Scott has been asked and how many times he has ANSWERED the question about the gloves. As a healthcare provider, kudos to you for bringing the awareness of the condition of Focal Dystonia to light and educating those with and without the condition. From a production and PR perspective, you should leave a link in all future posts (and even previous posts) on social media, leading back to this video, which is a fantastic and thorough explanation and solution for Focal Dystonia. Second, start a non-profit to assist musicians, and others, not fortunate enough to have the health coverage or financial means to treat Focal Dystonia. Kudos and godspeed Scott and the SBL Team.

Thank you very much for sharing ! I am a drummer and a little more than10 years ago I lost control over my left hand so can't hold the drumstick straight anymore since than ( played matched grip) .actually my wrist turns in a strange way when I play with a stick in the left hand. Like you, I went to all of the fysio's .gyropracticer etc. Finally it got diagnosed as focal dystonia. I had to accept not being able to play at the level I was used to anymore. I loved to practise a lot but no longer because of de FD. ( Luckily I can still teach drums in a decent way and use the traditionall grip mostly and manage)..... I started playing the bass intensively and I love it just as much as I loved playing the drums so I put my focus on that now! Luckily no problems at all with the hand and fingers ....And a big advantage over the drums ... I don't have to carry all the drumgear any more . Only the bass (at gigs an amp and cabinet or combo) ! 😊

I'm an American Chiropractor that passed the Boards in Switzerland. But early in my career my Dad had an accident in a stairwell and I injured my shoulder helping him. There was a medical error after an operation and I've suffered too many operations. And I've had to learn how to rehab, but also change my techniques to keep working. But it helped me try many new techniques, and it also made me quite the specialist for shoulder problems. I've become quite disappointed with many therapists in Europe since I think they are not diagnosing the shoulder properly. I would have some suggestions for Scotty, and tried reaching out to him before. Hopefully this comment start something, but I'm suppressed on all social media for my efforts fighting Big Oil and working for renewables.

I'm turning 50 this year, a couple of motor vehicle accidents messed up my lower back and broke my C2 in my neck. I sorta have most functions of my limbs . I've been playing guitar since I was 12 years old or so and started Bass just over a year ago. However for the past 2 decades things get worse and I obviously can't play at all like I use to. Thank you so much for this. I have been playing guitar and bass since I was around 5-- at 15 I started having ulnar nerve issues in both my arms. Turns out I got completely fucked by biology and have an extra muscle in my arms only 25% of people have, that grew large due to playing and started pressing on my nerve. Got surgery in my right arm and have been managing the pain on my left, and randomly 2 years later my right arm is bothering me again and I'm having bad shoulder issues that are exacerbating my nerve pain on both sides. So many more musicians live with injuries then people realize. It freaking sucks. I was just getting my motivation back from the last time, and now I can't play again. But for someone as amazing at bass as you to be dealing with something this debilitating is really inspiring to me. It gives me the hope that I can still improve despite having to limit my practice time. I wish you the best and thank you for sharing.

Dude, you literally saved a couple of friends of mine suffering from FD. I really appreciate that. I'll forward the information. I wish I could do the same, helping others with a solution, as I have arthritis for 30 years and also some unrecognizable autoimmune disease messing up and even damaging things, but apart from the fact that once it is livable and other time it is hell, I have no clue what is happening, why and what to do with it. The good side is, it rarely affects my playing music. Everything else, even simple everyday things, it can mess up. But I'm not complaining, not at all. I am lucky. Apart from pain and other issues, good things tend to happen to me and I can play. I am grateful to have good things and good people around.

Really interesting! 👍 I went thru a trauma a while back that has made my hands shake most of the days when I’m doing simple tasks like writing, playing, etc. Even to get my coffee cup upstairs is a big task. It’s ok at night, thats why I’m able to write this. I’m going to try this, to see if it works even in my case. At first I thought the gloves limited the nerves from “feeling”, but then I understood that it is the opposite. And I also learned another thing: I’m Swedish but I’ve always been very fond of the British language, so during the pandemic I came up with the goal to be able to speak English like I was born there. So now I know that you say “plectrum” instead of “pick”. (In Sweden we also say plectrum, so it’s easy. ☺️)

.one is quite abite different. I have sinus issues that inflame my throat which has affect what types of music I could sing and for how long. I affects the amount of time and when I talk if I have to talk in a loud environment. A Dr took my tonsils out because they were inflamed but it actually made it worse because my sinuses drank and make it even more inflamed. I have found if I sing properly and relax I can sing like I do when I'm sing parts in a choir I have less issues. It also affects my range. I have notes I can sing but immediately have throat issues when I try. All that to say it has severely limited my freedom musically but I'm still able to find opportunities to participate in music even though it has limited my career on the music side and can be quite frustrating that there not a definite solution. Thank you for encouraging people Scott. It's ok to have limitations and important to find some musical outlet. It can be discouraging to deal with health issues but knowing others are dealing with their own struggles and moving forward is a great encouragement and the honesty will help a lot with mentally dealing with a limitation.

I started playing with a glove on my left hand after seeing one of your videos several years ago. A few of my reasons are. I have arthritis in my fingers, knuckles swelling, painful and the gloves provide some compression and comfort. Another reason is my hand doesn’t sweat on the finger board with a glove or does it and make the neck clammy with a glove plus it makes the neck faster. Thanks for the idea. I can’t play without a glove now!

I have my issues myself, was very sick a few years ago, now I am ok now but I have serious consequences on my quality of life so I can really relate, had to quit martial arts because of it ... still trying to get over it, for those who don't practice martial arts, it's not a hobby, it's a way of life, you don't just give it up. I am glad for you that you found a "solution" that at least brings it back to a manageable level that allows you to play.

Scott, I’ve been watching your videos for a while now..I subscribed to your channel after watching this video..I’m not a bass player, but I want to learn!! I’m a brass player (trumpet and French horn) with cerebral palsy, which thankfully doesn’t affect my playing, but I admire the way you refused to let your focal dystonia end your career. Your videos are very entertaining. Please keep them coming!! You’re a fine bass player, and I enjoy hearing you play.

No focal dystonia here, but I did fall asleep for about 3 hours at my desk with my forehead resting on my forearm, that was resting on the edge of my desktop, and killed the nerve that wen to my right hand and wrist. I'd raise my forearm, and my hand would just hang down, unable to raise it or straighten out my fingers. I could still grip things, but I couldn't make my hand open back up. It would release whatever I was gripping at least. I could still pluck the strings, but it was difficult putting the bass on. I would be able to grip it, but I had to raise my arm up to get it over my head. I could still pluck the strings, but since I couldn't straighten my finger back out, I had to lean forward a bit, and let gravity stretch my finger out enough to pluck the string again. All the fingers were affected. I couldn't play 16th notes, but I managed. While I do a lot of things right handed, I'm actually left handed on things like writing, shaving, or eating lol. It took 6 months for the nerve to grow back, and I'm glad it did.

Wow, great story Scott. I wasn't even aware of this condition. I wish you much success with your album and documentary and I'm so glad you decided to do a Fusion album which is what grew up listening to also. Hopefully it will also highlight this condition and become a reference point on the path to a solution in the future. I wish you all the best and look forward to watching the documentary. 🤞🙂👍 Good luck.

I turned 40 this year, picked up bass for the first time in my life and started practicing. Discovered your channel and all I can say - SBL has been very inspiring and helpful in my beginner's journey. I noticed the gloves but never thought much of them since the value you guys provide is of the most importance. Screw the haters, your work is valuable to so many!

OMG! All this suffering! Glad for you, you’ve found a path to keep playing. Such an inspiration. And now the Album. Awesome album. Hope you find the strength to tour. You may be interested by John McLaughlin’s, the one and only, story. In 2017 he announced he wouldn’t be able to play anymore live because of hand arthritis. Then he heard about Dr. Joe Dispensa. Through meditations and intent he recovered the full mobility of his hands and is now touring like crazy. Yes, it’s the 5th dimension 😂, why not you? Thank You for your testimony, your courage, the Academy, the album, the tabs.🙏❤️👏

It’s interesting that touching something makes the tremors go away - just curious as to why the act of touching the strings / bass doesn’t have the same effect? But super glad you found a way to keep on playing!!!!

"I should be sharing why I'm wearing those gloves" ... Dude, first off - I love your content, you're an inspiration! Second, I don't think you owe anyone an explanation for anything. Internet is full of scrapes-of-the-bottom-of-the-barrel-of-human-garbage and you just can't let their babbling get to you (I can only imagine how hard that might be sometimes). Now, this being said, kudos for sitting down and sharing all of this, so it can help others!

This is why you're such a great ambassador for bass. You've experienced what it's like to have it taken away from you so when you do play, it's very precious. You have a Jesus-given gift of a second chance and you're making the most of every note you play.

I've stated to wear felt gloves from watching you to help dappen the strings, prevent nail contact, neck hand slides better up and down the bass neck, and keep bass clean of finger smudges on body and tune keys. Like a piano hammer-keys touching the strings I thought that why you did it too till now.

I never commented on any videos of yours before. I guess I just assumed that there was a reason for the gloves, but I never worried about it. I'm glad that you have something that allows your passion for playing bass to continue.
