I am a biologist and have been working in the forest industry in northern BC for a few years. Several years ago I found a pair of Redhead Bone-Dry pants from the ~70s that look nearly identical to these. I waxed them with beeswax and oiled them lightly and wear them in the winter over merino leggings. I work 10-12 hour days, often in knee-deep snow, and down to -30C. If it's any colder usually we find other things that need to get done... They are incredible. I stay warm and they are relatively waterproof, especially when they are just required to shrug off snow. They maintain mobility, while snowpants (or similar) are awful to walk long distances in. Construction workers laugh at me, but foresters are always interested. They tend to wear the old school army surplus wool pants. Personally, I don't like how those clump snow at the hem, but hats off to functional and traditional clothing. If you are in the outdoors often and need a hard-wearing pant year-round, but especially in the winter, go find a pair of rugged pants with a tightly-woven cotton canvas (this allows it to hold the wax/oil effectively). You won't regret it!

A tip for tin pants. cut the cuffs out a bit. Buy sail canvas thread. And use the extra material to patch knees as needed. Wax can be rubbed into the patchwork. I used to get a second season out of the pants as a spare pair. Filson is charging made in the usa prices. But only the tin wear is still made here. Tin wear is great for people who actually work.

Try out Iron heart jeans. YOU WILL NEVER GO BACK. You do not miss the price very much between iron heart and filson. It is originally a company from England. However, they have a American store in the North east called "self edge" the filson pants you wear are 15 oz fabric. The standard of iron heart is 21 oz. I have a pair that is made to get stronger the longer you wear them. My pair started out as 21 oz jeans, I have worn them for two years and they are now 23 oz jeans. NO holes or signs of wear, short of discoloration. They also do custom sizing for your person. It is like buying custom boots like nicks just in jean form.

The hole at the bottom of the double-front of the pant also allows you to install knee pads that stay in there, even through wash & dry. I added these knee pads to all of my Carhartt work pants and it makes a huge comfort/safety difference. Always ready & way better than traditional knee pads that have straps that dig into the back of your legs. Roll up knee pads tight & wrap 4-5 times around with a shoelace to keep tightly rolled, DO NOT TIE. Insert knee pad, then wiggle shoelace from around knee pad and your set, you'll never want to live without them!
@oakashthorn28

That is an amazing idea and I have never heard of it! We sell Christmas trees and I hate toting around knee pads. Now I'm going to insert them into my heavy waxed Carhart overalls!

"Pro tip"--to stop a hole or tear from growing in Levies and similar canvas cloth or even cotton shirt, try working in a little silicone sealer around edges, preferably clear type on the inside so it doesn't show. It only takes a few dabs. This will prevent fraying in successive washes, etc., and even patch some abraded areas or you can use a scrap of denim to patch hole or cut by gluing piece on inside. It will last as long as the garment and retain flexibility. (the bottom of his frayed britches reminded me)

@@andrewyork3869 To be honest, he might have become a beta-tester unknowingly. After all, they don't need to pay him to test those pants in real-life conditions, so even if they have to wait a year for a pair to be worn-out, they do get the pairs back for analyzing. And, who knows, maybe they sent him a different product than the one he initially bought, part of the same family/style of products. He said he explained some things to them, so they might know he's a logger and what his requirements are (like without the folded-over part on the bottom), so they might have changed the product slightly, to improve the parts which were lacking.

Hey Cody you probably wont read this but: Next time you kneel down to work, kneel with your right knee. it will immediately feel strange. All my work pants have a torn out left knee. I wanted to figure this mystery out also. I realized being right handed I always knee on my left knee. BTW I apply obenaufs LP to the knees and cuffs of my pants, essentially turning them into waxed cotton, waterproofs and preserves them. It makes dirt harder to impregnate into the canvas which causes premature wear.

Mister Wranglerstar, Considering the hazard that you have faced as a woodsman, what are some applications of these pants that you wouldn’t suggest? How are they around intense flame (akin to acetylene or Oxy/Acetylene). I’m not certain if these pants are suitable to my life as a plumber. Please respond if you have the capability. I’m always on the scout for a hardier bit of workwear. Thanks, Vince

Agreed. Duluth firehose. I have five pairs of the longest shorts they make and two pair of overalls. Life time replacement and I've been wearing mine for two years and had to replace one pair of shorts. You can put drywall screws in the cargo pockets and bend over all day. Just buy your own wax and apply to Duluth pants if you want to pretend you have metal pants.

In regards to cutting the hem off for safety, I always cut the seams of my pants on both sides about 2 inches or so up vertically. Looks better, fits boots better, and if it tears out, can be sewn back up.

I plan on buying a pair of Tin pants soon. I need something durable and somewhat water proof to wear while wood cutting and other outdoor work. I like that they are made in the USA and are to be something that is to last a long long time. But if you are only getting a year out of them I'm not so sure now.

Tinning Carhartts with a homemade wax based recipe costs a lot less than the Filsons. Love them in the cooler weather. Have a lighter pair of pants that I tinned as well and they are pretty good for warmer weather. Don't wear them into the home.

I'm 75 and wore Levis 501 since I was about 9-10 years old... They were just fine until about 6-7 years ago when they started making them in a 'South of the border' country...I ordered 3 pairs online from Sears...made in 3 different countries, all fit differently, and the 'denim' is maybe 1/2 as thick as the old USA made Levis.

I wouldn't feel too bad about all the "free" pants if i were you Cody. Consider this.... 1) those new pants were produced in a very refined, efficient process with the lest cost possible while still maintaining the quality and workmanship standards. 2) Look at those pants and try to how much time and effort it would take to just replace the front thigh panels and finish with pair of pants that match the original quality. It's probably impossible to do, period. And, even if it was possible, it would likely cost them as much, or more, than 3 or 4 pairs off of the production line. Besides all that, they are maintaining and promoting their brand "mystic" (that's that chorus of angels you hear when open the box on a new pair 😇) and customer loyalty. I love the channel. May you and your family be blessed beyond measure.

I thought the hole by the knee's was for knee pads, to slip them in there that way. (Especially on Carhartt pants) that's what I use it for, they sell those honeycomb knee pads for those plants specifically.

That's why I wear Duluth, forever warranty, I bought 5 pairs of firehose workpants like 8 years ago. Haven't had to buy pants since. Admittedly the fire hose pants aren't as durable as these, but for what I do, they last well over a year.

Hey @Wranglestar, I maybe got some summer pants for you - Pentagon BDU 2.0 - I must stress this as well well, I am also not affiliated in anyway with them, I just love those pants for work or chores, even for leisure. Got two pairs and I'm pondering on getting more. I thought of pointing them out when you mentioned the ripping problem - these are extremely durable (polyester), the meterial is sewn in a rip-stop technique, and what I love most about them - they don't stain. They plain refuse to. I got tomato sauce on them, took it off with my finger, no red stain; just a dark spot from the grease, but no red particles in the fabric. I wore and worked in them for a week, they looked clean in most parts. Only the knee area (also double layer) was a tint tad dirty from kneeling on wet earth. And oh yeah, they don't get wet easly on rain, although they're not impregnated. They are unexpensive too, 35$ tops.

One thing not mentioned in a couple of videos I’ve seen is how comfortable they become after warming up. You’d think being such stiff and robust material they would chafe behind the knees like a new pair of jeans. Not so! I use mine camping on my land. They are great work pants cutting and splitting wood and they’re excellent later around the fire. Sparks won’t phase them. Mine must be 20 years old. Never washed! No tears or holes.

the replacement shows you just how high the profit margin is on their products. Some of their things are ridiculously expensive for ridiculous items like the accessory gifts like notepad covers for $80 or whatever...a $300 canvas wallet. Products like those i would guess could be made from scrap material. Even if they're cut from rolls, it's no more than $1 of material. It's canvas and wax, no spendy inputs there. Considering other pants with heavyweight materials, durable construction, and tough stitching can be had for 1/4 the price, do you think the other 3/4 is the cost of a wax soak? I have one of their bags also. It's an older, simple bag, nice heavy leather straps, and good quality construction. . Do I believe there is $300 of solid value in that bag? not a chance.

Made in USA, now that's a subject i often think about, muricans (said the yurpean) are so proud of their MADE IN USA... for a good reason, i for one wear DVS Skate Shoes made in USA because after wearing a pair of skate shoes for about 14/15 years and throwing them away just because the part that touches the ground (idk the name in murican) was just worn the fk out of by allot of stuff like hundreds of KM walked and millions of gears changed on my motorcycle and all sorts of outdoor shiz the top side looked like brand new made me believe that MADE IN USA is a thing i can respect. Idk if the things build in USA are build by aliens or somfin but hey... you muricans can shure make good stuff that a small percentage of us yurpeans really appreciate. Keep making awesome stuff muricans i love you.

thought that small hole in the knee was for foam knee pads that you roll up and slide into place, where they can then unroll inside that cavity and protect your knees.

Hey Cody, so your inquiry about why your left knee gets blown out more than your right got me wondering. I went back and watched a good dozen or two of your videos. You are a left knee kneeler for sure. You tend to put your left knee on the ground and either lunge with your right in the air or simply avoid major contact to the ground. Obviously didn't have much going on today. Thanks for the videos, always a pleasure and keep it up!

Hi. 5 year ago I did a job for a pen pushing mate who out of desperation for cash ended doing some work for his brother in law as a top dressing aircraft fertilizer loader. The fertilizer company owned the top dressing aircraft company which gave my mate work clothing. After my stint he gave me all the clothes as they did not fit him so I ended up with a beautiful collection of '' Fristad'' & "Skillers" work pants which I use for saw work and engineering and have not washed them to date. So far not a single tear apart from the reflective tape perishing. Believe it or not the 2 brands are Swedish.
