MORE about the book:

'A masterful novel full of longing and regret . . . Intensely moving and yet full of restraint' - Douglas Stuart, author Shuggie Bain
Long Island is Colm Tóibín’s masterpiece: an exquisite, exhilarating novel that asks whether it is possible to truly return to the past and renew the great love that seemed gone forever. The sequel to Colm Tóibín's prize-winning, bestselling novel Brooklyn.
A man with an Irish accent knocks on Eilis Fiorello’s door on Long Island and in that moment everything changes. Eilis and Tony have built a secure, happy life here since leaving Brooklyn - perhaps a little stifled by the in-laws so close, but twenty years married and with two children looking towards a good future.
And yet this stranger will reveal something that will make Eilis question the life she has created. For the first time in years she suddenly feels very far from home and the revelation will see her turn towards Ireland once again. Back to her mother. Back to the town and the people she had chosen to leave behind. Did she make the wrong choice marrying Tony all those years ago? Is it too late now to take a different path?

Long Island is a great book, but, without spoilers - incredibly disappointed in some of the characters. Believable, but not the way I thought they would go.

Brooklyn was such a great book. You could feel the sense of disconnection from home, and familar. Then her need to try to construct a life back in island to consolidate the changing circumstances. The different worlds, and in her mind different realities, neither related to the other. Just beautiful, in the scientific sense. An idea that is splended in conception, development and execution. Loved it ❤

Why can't these people just leave the characters alone. There was a happy ending in Brooklyn.

Just finished the book and even though I was hooked Iwas and am also disappointed. I realised early on that it was unlikely to have a happy ending. But I didn't expect to be kind of annoyed with all the main characters. And I honestly think its lazy of the author to leave the ending open. And just what's the point of letting Eilis go back to Ireland and to Jim if not to make them happy in the end? It is not a stand alone book even if the author likes to see it this way. This starts miserable and ends extremely unsatisfactory. Bleh.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book 'Brooklyn' and the film. However, what was the ending in Long Island ?? I am so disappointed. Have I missed something ? I've listened to all the episodes, Brooklyn and Long Island through BBC Sounds.
