Hope you guys liked the video! Whilst editing this video TLDR News EU posted a great video about the situation with Iceland's military and went into a lot more detail on the history behind it. So if you're interested in learning more about that I suggest watching their video, I'll link it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iHxI5EV9-Vo.html
Iceland lost lost of sailors in WWll. Shot down by German U boats... We do not have military. But we are sadly in Nato. And Nato is a agressive allience, invading others countries
@@IceglacierArnar that is true, Finland and Sweden are finally joining us in NATO because of their strong desire to aggressively conquer the world. Those feisty Finns.
One small Detail you werern't clear about. When Iceland fell under Norwegian rule it wasn't an invasion it was a vote in the Alþing that put us under the Norwegian crown, then when the Danes got power it was the fact that they inherited the Norwegian crown
Iceland had a massive civil war where the locals fought each other for independence from King Hákon. Don't know where you get that from besides from after the Sturlungar captured the remaining territory.
You've missed the reason WHY the UK bowed to Iceland in the Cod Wars: Iceland's location is extremely strategic as it lies on the way to Russian arctic. In the Cod Wars, Iceland simply threatened to withdraw from NATO, and the US told UK to leave Iceland's claimed maritime zone.
That's only because the US was afraid of Iceland's military. The CIA found out what Iceland has secretly been making in its volcanoes and it terrifies them. Iceland are a founding meber of the New world order.
@@TheCaptainSplatter @PBjarniTh There is no requirement for a vote of NATO members to allow for a country to withdrawal from NATO. Withdrawal from NATO is done entirely on the part of the country that would so choose to do so, the other members of NATO can not force a country to remain a part of the alliance. A unanimous vote is only required for a country to join NATO.

@@joik3308 We did mess up a lot of their ships though, both fishing boats and royal military ships. A fun fact is that the brits did take more damage than us, both diplomatically and militarily ;3

Fantastic video! Your pronunciation of Eyjafjallajökull was one of the better ones I've heard from a non-Icelander! (Fun fact, I actually lived under Eyjafjallajökull when it erupted in 2010, we got a day of from school when it started which I did not dislike 😊)
And most English speakers want to say j the hard pronunciation. It’s funny because every other Germanic language only has soft j’s, so English is the oddball, and yeah I’m an English speaker but I guess I just know better than most.
@@tvuser9529 More like "TL", but it's not entirely consistent. Sometimes it's more like we would say a double L in English (for example the "ll" in "Snæfellsnes" is pronounced more or less as it would be in English, but with the sound coming from closer to the tip of your tongue, rather than the rear of it). And sometimes (particularly at the end of words) it's more like a "t", followed by a voiceless aspiration that sounds more like an English "sh" than an "L", but there isn't really any way to accurately spell out how it sounds in English. "Eyjafjallajokull" sounds pretty much like AEY-yah-FYAT-tla-YO-kutsh. In order to make sense of the double "L" including a mysterious "T" sound, I recommend trying to pronounce the "L" on the tip of your tongue rather than gutturally. Then say "LLLLLLLLL", with each L making a distinct sound. Notice how each L will be separated by a distinct tapping sound, like a "t", but formed by your tongue against your gums, rather than through closed teeth.
When at 9:50 you say Iceland has had a democracy for one thousand years you are only partially correct. What is now Iceland's parliament, Alþingi, was founded in 930 AD where the major landowners in Iceland had most of the voting power, it was more of an oligarchy. Then under the norwegian, later danish, rule Alþingi lost most of it's powers. When Iceland started to get home rule Alþingi was reinstated. Besides that, nice video.
I found out just how facinated I am with Greenland and Iceland from the prospecting show called "ice cold gold" they found tons of hard rock outcrops of ruby deposits and gold. And oil deposits. It seems like such a bountiful location and I love the climate, geology, fishing, crabbing, etc.
That is how ecological destruction is caused. We can never be okay with a light bulb that never dies. So we had to make many light bulbs that are designed to break completely so you are forced to buy more!!!!
In WWII Iceland lost 230 people to the war. This might not seem to be a lot - but the population only numbered about 140 thousand at the end of the war. The percentage lost to the war was therefore about .17% whereas the United States (for example) lost .30%. In other words, Iceland's per capita losses (mostly among sailors and fishermen killed by U-boats and aircraft) were about half those of the United States. It is worth noting that the Icelandic deaths were all among civilians - probably exceeding the per capita civilian death toll of most other countries ...
No he has videos of him ramming fishing boats The big boats were aircraft carriers Which … I mean obviously the British decided your grandpa was like a little kid and spared him cause your here but you know he didn’t win They decided not to kill him
@@ShmuckCanuck I thought the brits sent cruisers to protect their fishing boats and there is a story about a British cruiser “ramming” týr or Þór (way smaller ship) it got very close from sinking but, yeah it didn’t and they managed to somehow maneuver from the cruiser to the back of the fishing boat and cut the net 😅 sailors from the cruiser couldn’t believe what they saw…
@@noi9982 no I am The biggest boat either side sent we’re coast guard vessels; the British didn’t send there big boats You know they have aircraft carriers and cruisers and battle ships right? The biggest things they sent were two drstoryed but almost entirely corvettes which are roughly thrr size of some of icelands coast guard vessels Yes; some British boats were rammed and damaged Some Icelandic boats were rammed and damaged I’m aware of that If you think you outmuscled the British navy Or even that they sent the navy Sir you don’t know anything about navies Or the cod war You just know your grandpa told you some stories abo ut how when he was a kid he swam 80 miles to school and fought polar bears bare handed and wrested the queen of England after sinki her battleship with his dinghy Like your grandpa just exaggerated and lied dude All our grandpas did it
From an Icelander i think Iceland suffers alot from it's peacfullness and tourism since the it is really costly to live here for reasons like not all company's ship there and the goverment keeps making these really expensive houses that the more poorer family's cant afford. the price in Reykajavik is ever growing too so a house that cost 10k dollars last week is now 13k dollars and stuff like that.
Yea, (another icelandic pers.) I love this place but its expensive as hell, like hagkaup in garðabær is super expsensive just cuz they are close to a school
as someone moving to Iceland within the next couple of months, you also have to keep in mind that it is one of the countries in the world with the highest salaries. it all depends on quality of living and what one expects. i am coming because of nature and peacefulness whilst being able to spare money every month is the cherry on top.
A great insight about the country thats mostly overlooked in terms of geo-politics. Never thought fish could be such a big force to deploy coast guards!
I would say that no country is immune to war but yeah it has an excellent position on the map, this incredible island. I've been there for 8 months and yeah it's a gem for those who seek raw nature and few people.
It's membership in nato is what makes its geographical position important, because the interference of naval ships over that vast stretch of ocean is what makes the supply lines so hard to set up, not because the ocean is large. If Iceland was instead allied to China and US/Canada/UK was invading, the fact its surrounded by so much ocean would be a non-sequiter.
While Britain lost all three Cod Wars, but they were not trying to land in the country. When they did invade Iceland in 1940, they found it very easy. So Iceland is NOT hard to invade.

France and Germany one day just decided to stop fighting each other in devastating wars every one or two generations and instead become best friends. Things really can change completely in a short time if people really want to.
Best regards from Iceland 🖐 I've been living here for 6 years and I have still learned few interesting things from your video, thanks 😊 To answer your final question. In my opinion it's gonna be both. Center of attention and no wars. Unless the Gulfstream stops, then we're gonna just freeze here 🤷♂️
You kind of said it but you explained it, Iceland is definitely not immune to war, they are the opposite, it’s an extremely strategical location for a world war or a war including North America or Europe
lunancy, its peaceful because its in the middle of nowhere surrounded by ocean with its nearest neighbors being the most stable democracies in the world. Its unique geographic position eliminates the need for a military. Think of Ukraine? a mostly landlocked country with its closest neighbor being aggressive. If there was no Ukrainian military, there would be no Ukraine.
Other nations aren't positioned in a spot between NATO and Russia as a way to literally hostage hold on your safety within these parameters. You are a fool if you think every nation in the world can NOT have a military and achieve what iceland has achieved. If you guys were located close to any other peninsula you would have been a colony of some nation that does practise warfare.
I am not sure it's as easy as you try to portray it to be. Because it's so strategically relevant, the Brits and later Americans occupied Iceland during WWII and controlled its exports to Germany AGAINST Iceland's wishes for neutrality. Sure, they're prob glad they werent in the German (or later Soviet sphere), but they had no say in this either. No army, no choice. Their location might make them immune to the need for its own army, but it does not make them immune to foreign occupation or becoming a theatre of war. EDIT: I agree, people should get medals for pronouncing that volcano's name. Also yes, the US put a lot of pressure on the UK to stop the cod wars. Just as they undermined the UK a few other times.
"the Brits and later Americans occupied Iceland during WWII and controlled its exports to Germany AGAINST Iceland's wishes for neutrality. Sure, they're prob glad they werent in the German (or later Soviet sphere), but they had no say in this either. " There's probably a good reason why the Icelandic people aren't banging on about not being allowed to be neutral towards the Nazis though
I disagree. Reason: Iceland's highly strategic location in the Atlantic. In fact, the capital of Reykjavík and the main airport at Keflavík would be first strike targets in order to deny the use of Iceland as a base to operate long-range NATO planes used for anti-submarine and anti-shipping duties.
The strange thing is that the rising seas will not affect Iceland as much as most nations. Melting of the glaciers will also cause the land to rise. Not as much as the sea water but it will dampen the situation.
Iceland is hard to invade, but very easy to blockade. Let's say Post-Ukraine War Russia had a massive "accident" with it's GPS systems, meaning a couple of planes bound for Icelandic airports crashed on the runways blocking them, and a few ships ran aground blocking the major ports - in days Iceland would be on it's knees. There would be no threat to invade, so no NATO Treaty to be invoked. Then it would be all down to brinkmanship - how much countries thought controlling Iceland was worth vs the risk nuclear war. Totally impossible? Maybe, but In high stakes geo-political games, the very unlikely can and does happen. Let's remember Iceland didn't win the Cod Wars by any form of force, but purely because of political expedience. He who lives by that sword, could just die by it as well.
Glossing over the fact Iceland is a Scandinavian colony which led to the guess by Norway and Denmark was unfortunate and easily could’ve pushed the video to 15mins
