Donald Trump surrogate Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) responds to saying “during Jim Crow the Black family was together” during a Tuesday Black voter outreach event for the former president, suggesting that Jim Crow had positive aspects despite it being a time of brutal social and political oppression for African-Americans. Rep. Donalds joins Joy Reid to discuss the backlash.

I'm 78 and lived with Jim Crow: refused the use of a restroom when my Grandmother was trying to buy me a suit, got evil stares form white people during a stops in Virginia, had to wait in colored waiting rooms at interstate Greyhound and Trailways bus stations, was told to go in the back door of white persons homes, was told to say sir to white people younger than me, went to segregated schools that passed down used school books. Some homes had fathers in the homes. Not all homes had fathers present. I experienced Jim Crow and congressman until you've lived with it study and get the facts straight. @dimdimbaby
@dimdimbaby 3 месяца назад
What I would get out of what he said is that Black families were more together under oppression. We had to be. And btw, it didn't start off like. Right after slavery there were a lot of homes where the father wasn't really there because that's what they did in slavery. The slave owners separated the men from the women, so a Black man would sleep with many women. But as time moved on Black men became more committed to his family unit. What Rep. Donalds is saying, is that the Democrats have found a way to weaken the Black family unit without physically lynching the Black man. The policies in government encourage mothers to be single and have fathers out of their homes. You always hear Democrats talk about how the SCOTUS gutted the Voting Rights Act. They never tell you how. But Section 4 and 5 of the VRA were never meant to be permanent. Section 2 on the other hand can do everything that's needed to enforce voting rights. The only difference is that Section 4 had a road block and made certain states and districts with a history of disenfranchising (minority) voters - such as New York City - get preclearance with the DOJ before any new district lines could go forward. But let's say that a city or state disagreed with a negative outcome. It could go to court and try to have a court disagree with the DOJ. That can still happen. An aggrieved party can go to the DOJ with a complaint, and perhaps court. But oftentimes the DOJ would side or decide not to intervene leaving a disgruntled person or group no other choice but court. Obama and Eric Holder could have created new preclearance measures when Congress was all Democrat. But they didn't. So the use of the word "gutted" without explaining anything is Democrat Slickness.

Exactly how did the black family unit stay more intact under the hardships of Jim Crow, which was evil, than during the welfare acts after and leading to today? I think we can both agree that america is way less racist today than back then? We are talking a 25% single mother rate then as opposed to 75% today! That fact should make you question some things. That is what the gentleman was trying to point out, not that Jim Crow was somehow good. That proves that black community has the backbone, resilience, and moral character to help itslef and some people feel that is a better path forward than welfare that incentivizes poor behavior that leads to despair regardless of race. I feel the real racism is thinking that black community can only thrive through handouts.

Donalds's point is that the conservative nature of blacks is what sustained the black family even through the hardships of Jim Crow. It was, in part, when blacks began to turn toward Democrat liberal programs that the black family was all but destroyed. Nearly 80% of black children grow up without their fathers. Again, nearly 8 out of every 10 black kids grow up without their dads. Yet blacks are abusing Donalds's point to help Democrats when it is Democrats who are sinking the black family. That is what is truly disgusting and disheartening.

Byron and other black men like him have lost the culture war in the United States and they are better off seeking to build families with women not from the US American black community. Conservative black men want families, they need to take a card from the white men that found foreign wives and build families silently with those women. You dems are just out of your minds with all the spin, TDR, incompetency, and gas lighting. Everything that this man said is fact, but you want to focus on the term Jim Crowe. In fact, you should focus on it, and here is the question you should ask, that he failed to explain. How exactly did black families do better from a structure standpoint in a way more racist society than what we have today? Do you understand that? It is statistical fact that pre great society/civil rights act that black families only had a 25% single motherhood rate. After that, and leading to today the rate is over 75%. That is horrible and what you should care about other than this fake outrage being vomited out your mouths. As someone who is for the success of the black community, I think every possible step should be taken to combat this problem, which is the common denominator to success or poverty regardless of race. Look at the stats, take fathers out the home for any race and the outcome is the same. Unfortunately, the black community has had to struggle with this always, starting with the effects of broken families through slavery, and on into the fallout from incentivizing single motherhood through great society/wellfare acts. Strangly, the only time they did not suffer from single motherhood was during the racist Jim Crowe. To me this showed the backbone, resiliency, and moral fiber of black people when they could only depend on themselves. Nobody, is advocating a return to Jim Crowe, just pointing out that black people are strong enough to help themselves and that some of these acts that were supposed to help, only crippled. We should learn from this and find a better path instead of gaslighting and trying to twist the narrative based off terminology.

Bryon is actually making a great point. Amazing how the victim narrative is so strong that ppl refuse to see it. Even at the detriment of their own families. Having fathers in the home during Jim Crow is an example of how much the Democrat party destroyed black communities.when black Americans faced disgusting treatment they stood strong as family units. As soon as they put their faith in the Democrat party. The Democrat party has destroyed them. 70 percent of black American children grow up without a father as a role model. Since the sixties black woman instead let the Democrat party in their homes and got rid of dads. That's what point he's making. Joy Reid knows exactly what he's saying. The real point we should have been interested in is "why are marriages not lasting these days and what can we do to make it better?" We cannot deny the fact that children need both parents. @candacen7779
@candacen7779 3 месяца назад
Everything you just said is false. It's not the name of the era that's the problem. It's what happened to the Black community during that era that's the problem. Surely, you're not that obtuse. Also, the Black community has voted *overwhelmingly* for the Democratic party for the last 100 years. So, that includes part of the Jim Crow era. Are you saying the Democratic party was the conservative party back then? Were they the conservative party when FDR was in office in the 1930s and 40s? Back when the Black community voted in large numbers for FDR. (The ones that could vote anyway.) So no, we didn't vote more conservatively. Bryon Donalds -- and you -- are wrong on that note. And no, Black people weren't "more a unit" before welfare. The reality is women had fewer rights under the law and often stayed in marriages because that was the only way to live with a modicum of dignity. Before the 1970s-era Women's Liberation Movement, women in the US couldn't even buy a house, open a bank account, or start a business without their husband or father cosigning for them. Having to stay in a marriage because the only other option was to live in even worse poverty is NOT a sign of strength. It's a sign of coercion. Also, having access to welfare actually helped lift the Black community up out of poverty. A lift they were not able to achieve without access to those programs. Hence why the poverty rate for Black families in 1960 was 59%, but as of 2020, the rate is down to 17%. Access to government programs -- initiated to help white families in poverty first, by the way -- helped the Black family considerably. So it didn't hurt them in the least. Conclusion: Literally nothing Byron Donalds said was even remotely based in fact. And no, it's not about the "title" of the era that's the problem. It's the lies.

I mean, why can't it be more nuanced than that? Why is it all or nothing? In some ways, things were better for black people back then than they are today, in other ways, things are better for black people today than they were back then. Both can hold true at the same time, depending on what you're talking about. Donalds is talking about the marriage rate. I assume we both agree that black families being together is a better thing than black families being broken up. Therefore, it would follow that, when it comes to black marriage rates, it was better for black families during the Jim Crow era than it is today. How can anyone argue against that, on it's face?

He brings up Jim Crow because even though black people were highly discriminated against, they still did incredibly well in maintaining their nuclear families, which in case people don't know, is incredibly good for society as a whole. Therefore, if black people knew the value of and maintained the nuclear family and traditional values back then, when everything was basically against them, how much more will black people today be able to florish if we move away from ideologies that are harmful, and back to more traditional values that include putting God at the centre of everything and putting the nuclear family in a position of high esteem.

That's the problem right there. It was a lack of communication. So he got his information from white people. Here's a black man making fun of black families. While his wife is white.

But yours is highest in single parents. Highest in abortion. Highest in crime rates per 100k. Highest in use of government assistance. More black people are murdered than any other race, and by their own race. All by design of the very people you keep in office. Biden voted to keep kids in segregated schools, and voted to incarcerate for small amounts of drug possession, to lock up black men. And they're laughing all the way to the white house about it.

@luckymchl2074
@luckymchl2074 3 месяца назад
Donalds never said that. He referred to how factually, and statistically Black America was better off at that time than what Dems have given them over the last 60 years. Which is correct. We have the numbers. Yes, it was an awful time, but Black America is worse off today, while ~90% of them have lived in Democrats Cities/States, under Democrat law for over 60+ years now. Besides, Democrats created Jim Crow, so why should Black folk vote Democrat? Don't care how much you want to point it at the Repubs, it was never them according to our history books. It doesn't take a school to read history books to know the actual facts.

He wasn't crediting Jim Crow with anything. People hear these words and go off the deep end. Pay attention to the context! THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT TWO DIFFERENT THINGS! He never said that Jim Crow was a good thing. He was only referring to an era in time when black families were strong - which was true until LBJ's Great Society created welfare programs that destroyed black families because the benefits were awarded to single mothers. Black families were stronger than white families. When LBJ implemented his Great Society he knew exactly what he was doing - he said he would "keep nig****" voting Democrat for 200 years"! Democrats voted against all civil rights legislation until the 1960s and LBJ. The idea that the parties "changed places on race" is absolute nonsense! White Republicans were hanged for registering blacks to vote in the South. The Republican party in Texas was founded by black men and there was a black representative elected to Congress in 1870. Hiram Rhodes Revels arrived on Capitol Hill to take his seat as the first Black member of the U.S. Congress in 1870. WHY were American children never taught about that? Woodrow Wilson was a racist and he segregated the federal government. It was desegregated by Harry Truman in 1948. Hiram Rhodes Revels arrived on Capitol Hill to take his seat as the first Black member of the U.S. Congress in 1870. They stopped teaching REAL history in our schools for a reason!
