IMF, World Bank and Princeton Economist Ashoka Mody looks beyond GDP growth and argues that India is Broken because it has under performed consistently on several key parameters such as jobs creation, quality education, quality of life and environmentally sustainable development. His book flies in the face of the narrative that this is India's Moment.

Dear viewers, watch, reflect, then agree or disagree. It is just a book, but by an expert and prominent economist. If you disagree, present your facts. Watch the show I have provided data and articles supporting most of his claims about India's education and PISA performance, and about unemployment. If you are only listening then you are missing the charts and pics and videos of the supporting data.

What Prof Mody tells about relation between sustainability and GDP is well settled old principle available in classical texts. For example, factories manufacture Cigerate and other Tobacco products, and these products affect people's health but at the same time these products add to the revenue and GDP. Such contradictions are common to all GDPs whether America, China, or India. Nothing specific with India. How can one base his argument on such classical contradictions to brobeat indian economy. Is it not a fact that Europeeya stringent environmental laws made the manufacturing financially unsustainable in Europe, and forced the factories to shift to China which had much relaxed environmental laws resulting in lower production costs in China, where no civil society or environment lobby can pressurise the Chinese government. Environmental sustainability had always affected the economic sustainability of manufacturing, leading to migration of manufacturing to new geographies. Let us consider the oil based economies like OIC plus which has caused havoc to environment at the cost of other millions. Should'nt the oil producing countries pay for climate justice. COP27 based many of its recommendations on this very premise. It is something academically classical without having any relation with the policies of any specific geography. It is upto Prof Mody to attribute to an specific economy. Such opinions make me to think that I am not getting academic analysis rather being fed an analysis based on political beliefs.

You are confused One Particular Problem with the Decisive or the Main Problem. Prof Mody's thesis is that "India is Broken" because in past 7 decides it failed to improve on the Employment rates, even with some great achievement on GDP growth sometimes. Of course in the discussion of all the problems India had and still has, it includes all the common Capitalist Problems like the one you criticized here. His main observation is that India failed comparing to South Korea, Taiwan, China, Vietnam etc. that all had and still have the Same common Capitalist Problems. So you are right that "India is Broken" not just because the pollution problem, but the pollution is Part of the problems to overcome For All the Capitalist approaches. If you read his book, his main conclusion is that "India is Broken" because of the gradual breakdown of government quality, social normal and moral code of India in past 7-8 decades.

@K.S.Sivakesavan Instead of pointing my Economic knowledge you should have tried to understand or research about "Job less growth ". No problem, with due respect I ll teach you sir. GDP is measure of Gross of production of goods and services within a country. Lets say a firm is importing mobile worth of USD 100 and Selling it at USD150 in India. Net service hence the GDP produced in this case is USD 50. Now to trade through import which is a service GDP gets generated but how much manpower ks required probably 1 or 2 in thia example. However if the same mobile phone if manufactured at USD 100 and sold at USD 150 will generate a GDP of USD 150 under manufacturing (100) and service (50) thereby employing atleast 5-6 people to manufacture. Hence India's GDP growth which is service sector dominated is producing less job of equivalent GDP growth of China Bangladesh or Vietnam. Hence I say we need more job intensive industry like Textile, garments, luxury wear, footwear, spare parts, real estate, metals, food processing etc to be focused more.

Dear Esteemed Scholars, India is not broken and it is not breaking either. I left India in 1999 as a 25 year old professional and returned back after 20 years. India is developing and developing very fast. People are "Satisfied" with material needs. However, quality information is disseminating very fast and in languages easily understood by people. One of the most remarkable achievements is limited use of chemicals in agriculture, thus preserving the land or as we call it "Dharti Maa". Industrial sector is also growing fast as more and more people are consuming relatively modern implements. The main difference for india is space constraint and natural dust which erodes the shine (Chamak Damak). If we had some more space we could have built wide roads like the already developed parts of the world. I also have a solution of the dust. Make everything matt finished. I have noticed a singular trend amongst the Indian origin "intellectuals". Crapping all over India grants them immediate recognition from the West -- something all these ivory tower intellectuals seem to desperately crave. I want to make it clear that my comments are NOT directed towards Dr.Khan -- but to the author of the book under discussion. I live in the USA and I travel frequently to my village in Andhra Pradesh. When I was a kid, my village had 2 families with 2-wheelers -- and they were considered rich! These days, every home in my village has power, refrigerator, TV, at least one motor vehicle, and more. I rarely see beggars come around to each house to beg, or even on the streets. That was so so common when I was a kid. As far as I can tell from publicly available data, India has moved about 400 million people out of poverty in the last 2 decades. Sure, there is poverty still -- there always was. Sure there is unemployment still, there always was, and always will be. But, there has been a lot of employment as well. Look around India's neighborhood. Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar -- India is the only bright spot in terms of GDP growth, forex reserves, world standing, and all the things that matter. So, when I see all these shitty intellectuals write books about how bad things are with Indian economy, Indian democracy, Indian press freedoms, it just really gets my goat. We need to ship them off to Pakistan or elsewhere, where they would have little time to write these tomes and would be more worried about just getting on.

We know there are problems, but I found very little contribution from any of these in resolving it. Till 2014 Our political system was highly caste-religion based, but Modi tried to change it on development based. The caste-religion still pays big role but a lot others are now lookin into developments also. One of the best episodes in Khanversations. Few comments: 1. The impacr of MNREGA on employment has not been touched. Often, labour intensive activities - construction, material handling etc - have reported huge shortage of labour resulting in their moving away from labour intensive practices to capital intendive ones. MNREGA , and related poverty alleviation measures ( eg free grains to many households) has resulted i in many workers finding it easier to meet badic necessities without struggling to find employment. 2. India's industrialisation efforts suffer due to labour laws and regulatory issues. As a result, most industries prefer to find ways that avoid regular labour employment 3. The explanation of personal popularity of certain leaders - Eg Modi now and Indira in the past - is also related to lack of popular choices. However, Prof Modi's observations on decentralisation is extremely valid. We often see smalller states outperform larger ones and this supports this argument

Inference :- After basic needs are taken care of some fake family pride stops women from work but soon realisation comes and women start working again. 3) Decrease in growth post 2016 detailed explanations by economist K. Also there was increase in population of fish in Krishna river too! 6) Courts and judicial system already people like Sanjeev Sanyal member EAC are talking about for there reforms Law Minister also hinted same things. 7) Urban rejuvenation is going in full swing in the country . From Mumbai metro to RRTS and ATAL Mission work is on in war footing. 8) This year pollution coming from parali burning in Haryana decreased too. 9) Also crime rates are falling . So called 'RIOTS' have also decreased. Insurgency has gone down repealing of AFSPA have shown so.! 10) Education work is going on it too . New NEP is step in right direction . Boom in e-education is also a good trend Example :- Recently in Maharashtra a exam for assessment of Teachers performance was conducted which will then is going to decide on which teacher to make permanent. Many colleges 11-12 have shut down in state which provided sub standard education. Many more is being done . But yes a long way to go ahead!!!!

We Indians love to believe in the concept of life "slow and steady" wins the race. We never been in hurry in life. So we are still surviving after one thousand years of all kinds of atrocities. The same IMF/World Banks has said India is bright spot in an otherwise gloomy world outlook. Even with the covid, while established economies struggled, India did very well. If I look back over the last 30 years, India had definitely improved a whole lot, poverty levels are down, unemployment down, purchasing power is up, middle class has risen, infra has improved , ,, I can go on. Granted , there is opportunity to to better, but exaggerating that "India is broken" is ridiculous!

A very provocative title of the book.. and the topic of your conversation with Prof.Mody. I started watching the video to see if Prof.Mody also resorts to wokeism like many left liberals on Indian origin do these days in the US. I found his articulations refreshingly honest, backed up by his own reasoning. He did not try to disregard or argue against any of the data points you shared. He maintained focus on his main themes and explained why much work needs to be done yet to develop this country. Hard to disagree with ANYTHING he said. But... this is the same India that Churchill once declared that it would not survive a decade as an independent country. India experienced starvation deaths soon after independence. The country had no core competency of any kind to speak of, to conduct international trade back then. India has traveled a great distance from those depths. India is a power to reckon globally today in many facets. Its infrastructure is developing so rapidly that not even eternal optimists have envisaged. So let's not trash/play-down what India has accomplished. Much needs to be done and it is upon the current generation of youth and next generation of politicians to carry India forward to greater heights by embracing new changes/challenges and finding solutions.

India will always have problems and plenty of them. If that's all you want to see, fine, you will see plenty. If you want to see unprecedented growth, people being moved out of poverty, social empowerment, massive opportunities, massive infrastructure projects, boom in manufacturing, etc. you can see plenty of that too. Finally, anything one can say about India, the exact opposite of that can also be credibly argued. So it is upto your narrative which image you focus on. Dr, Khan, I really enjoyed this video where you were discussing with Dr Mody, his book about India. Thanks for bringing such content to your audience. Dr Mody's views on the subject of India;s economy and society were very untypical and interesting. So he definitely is an out of the box thinker and we all need to appreciate such thinking. I am not as pessimistic as Dr Mody on India's prospects. I would certainly agree with his logic on education quality and making sure that the quality of the education system improve continually from where it is, especially for the masses. I also agree with his views about the need for more accountability in governance and society in general and also about the importance of focusing on women empowerpment and employment. However, I also believe that GDP and GDP per capita are very relevant for any country. Rising tides lift all boats. I also wish he could have been more prescriptive on what is needed to fix the problems he identified. But thanks for bringing such an interesting speaker, and please bring us more diverse voices. As a fellow Hyderabadi, I want to also let you know that we share similar roots. I live in California now, but have a lot of fondness and hopes for our mother land.

My point of view is while new age technology has created jobs but it has taken away traditional jobs. Hence we need to focus on job creation at much faster rate as technology like AI etc will take away more traditional jobs. Environmental degradation is a major challenge which we need to address as India is rated as most polluted country in EPI published by Yale. Having said that India Inc are doing some phenomenal work in the area of Sustainability and government is now focusing on it too. The recent budget is focused on green growth which is an example.

They income more because they have to spend more for living. No one is denying that india is not a developed nation it is developing. Yes, India can do more and should do more, but india is broken, is nowhere near the truth. Some states are growing very fast but some are not so. So how can whole india be compared. PCI shows purchasing power of individual. So there may be 10% who may be earning huge but majority of 90% earning low...so they will not help in boosting economy. To raise PCI we need to focus on reskilling people and the creating demand. So Govt is working on infra so that demand can be generated at low cost, but again till people are reskilled their PCI not rising who will purchase. So it is Catch 22 situation, but someone also need to focus on skill-development.

Agreed sir I feel there is more noise than what it is. These days Indians have Turned to jingoism rather than facts or discussion. Speaking against BJP is propagated as speaking against India More than the economic achievement, democracy in india is dying a slow death and inequality in wealth distribution allows only a few sections of society as well as business to hold on to power than others. I wish India would grow but not at the cost of civil rights and freedom. Joining politics from a apolitical family is next to impossible without affiliation with powerful organisation, wealth or fame this politics in India is unique that keeps ordinary out from the game of democracy and allowing only a selected few from powerful groups to rise to top. Calling indian politics as the largest organised crime would not be false. Courts in india have nearly 5crore pending cases roughly 1 in 25 Indians have pending court cases itself is the testimony of a failing system and lack of ability to provide citizens with justice. Until these fundamentals are not resolved India could not achieve its true potential. India needs to grow at 9% till 2029 to achieve 5 trillion economy it is still growing at about 5-6%, neither economically or socially india is achieving its potential thus I feel "There is more noise than what it is".
@Arihant877
@Arihant877 Год назад
It's very easy to label Indians. Transformation of the same India from realistic (before 2014) to jingoistic (after 2014) : It's something like If you play a song on low volume then it's ok but if you raise the volume it becomes irritating for those who don't like the song. Speaking against BJP is being labeled as anti India - Everyone has all the rights to say anything abt BJP (Maut ka saudagar, khoon ki dalali, communal, saffron terror etc. there are N no. of statements).*****But from the floor of Cambridge, pointing towards a Sikh gentleman & telling him that you have been rendered as 2nd class citizens in India is not a penny less than toeing a khalistani agenda. Actually they were treated as 2nd class citizens in 1984 by Congress.****When the Congress Scion says on UK soil that "India is a union of states. It’s a negotiation (Contrary to Dr. Ambedkar) and if you try to force one idea (which is nothing but "Say no to Muslim appeasement", Caste politics & nation first ) on a union, it will react.” This is nothing but toeing pakistani & khalistani agenda and supporting idea of "Destructible states within a Indestructible Union". There are lot more... Democracy is dying in India : Of course a special, customized & dynastic democracy is dying in India. Modi didn't catalyze the changing India, It's the changing India that selected Modi. It's ironical that 12 out of 28 states are being ruled by Non BJP govt & yet they voted for Modi in Lok-sabha but democracy is dying.... Rule of people (Support & Promote Politics by positive participation & Say no to dynasty or self entitled rulers) For the people (Policies for nation not for caste & religion, say no to appeasement & don't compell a society just to behave like a mere toothless observer). By the people (In spite of a mass-based freedom movement, the real inheritors of power after 1947 were a small group of people who spoke English with the right fluency and the right accent, had the right social background, and who, in the initial decades, came to power and ruled the roost. Making such false narrative that no common man can be successful in politics now a days is totally wrong.

I do believe that the issue of unemployment in very huge in India. But to answer the question of decadal growth, just one question-does the living conditions of Indian have improved as it was in 2012 or does it have gone down in 2022. Does an average man on the street is earning more money then he used to in 2012 or has his income has decreased. Does steal consumption, oil/petrol consumption, electricity consumption,and no of cars on streets have increased or decreased. I think data tells us the real figures more than anything else. Yes has it increased at the rate that we wanted too. No absolutely not. We would have wanted an average growth of 10% p.a but we got nearly 6.5to 7%p.a which is a significant decrease I.e 30% less than what we would have wanted. But achieving 10% growth is hard. I don't think we will be able to achieve 10% growth anytime in the future also. But I would be be very happy if India achieve 7% growth over next 30 years. And what govt says and what they do are completely different things. For ex "Modi the liar" - says we will become a developed country by 2047 which is 24 years from now. But I was calculating according to statistics available that is impossible no matter what. If everything goes right then India can become a developed country by at the very least 2067 and not 2047, which is 20 years ahead of govt prediction. And that too if everything remains stable. So what they say and what is achievable are two different things. Plus on the matter of women employment I think you guys don't read those data in depth or purposely choose to ignore it I don't know. But if you look at the data of women employment there is two clear distinction, the rural employment and the urban one. So in the urban areas the women employed has marginal increase i.e nearly 1 % while in the rural area it has decreased. Because in the rural areas what is employment I.e sowing, cleaning, other household activities but nothing else which pays literally nothing. In 2005-06 the rural women were working to support their families basic needs but since then the money the male member earning in the family had increased so those women no longer needs to do minusculine jobs because they no longer have to support those basic needs. That's why even though literacy has increased but employment in rural areas have decreased. And it is going to stay that way in rural areas . I read somewhere that, a very famous Indian ecomist said back in 2000s that What India needs to do is built 600 large and small cities that will solve a lot of problems of India and Indians from employment to solving corruption to solving problems of discrimination on the basis of sex, caste and so many other things. And about urban employment I don't see an incremental growth in women participation in that until and unless Indian parents gives up this idea of arrange marriage. Because marriage is still a big thing in India people do want to get married and raise their kids unlike Japan or South Korea or Britain. So most often than not it's the women who have to make that sacrifice. I have seen and one of my own sister in law gave up her job for having and raising kids.She was a teacher teaching Computer and IT but gave up her job 2,3 years after getting married.She wanted to raise her kids.Its the way it is. Then comes the problem of women safety as well.

Well, India has always been broken with respect to all these aspects right from the very beginning. If it was not it would already have been a superpower. But it does not mean that India has no prospects. India seems to be able to produce competent workforce but India is unable to accommodate them with jobs. It is the consequence of skipping becoming a manufacturing based economy and jumping directly to become a service based economy. So India has been unable to produce jobs for the uneducated or low skilled workforce. That is what manufacturing generates.

One of the best discussion on this channel you ever had, we want more such learned personalities on your channel, whenever I look towards mainstream media it appears absolutely absurd they never talk about such fundamental issues, Dr khan i sometimes finds you biased on some issues,but this time you nailed it, we all need to understand what professor mody is saying as soon as possible,if we want to progress really.

I thought India is only faltering in ‘Democracy’, ‘Happiness’, ‘Religious freedom’, ‘Press freedom’ & few more indicators … now I learnt we are lagging in PISA test too… 😱 ..and then there is Mr. Tata ordering 470 planes(with order from another 300 coming down the line)..and all the Car companies selling more Cars and Ministry of transport making roads at about 20km per day .. I don’t understand how will all these ‘Un-happy’ ‘Un-employed’ ‘Low Maths-Science-Reading’ skills people get on those planes and use those roads ? And with such miserable situation on all fronts why is the stupid power consumption going up(10-13% monthly increase y-on-y) Every time I hear these economists I am reminded of the noble prize acceptance speech of economist Fredrich Hayek titled ‘The Pretence of Knowledge’(which would roughly translate as ‘ज्ञान का ढकोसला’) where he warns the world to not give to much credence to economists.

Good points. I said similar things in my opening statement. What is your explanation about the PISA test and unemployment data?

@@ProfMuqtedarKhan yes indeed. My view was on the overall negative and a ‘definitive’ statement by the author. India is changing and changing rapidly both in front of our eyes (from my childhood I remember hours of load shedding, now power rarely goes off. I remember rail travel was a mission in itself, now it’s a much more pleasant experience. Airports were exotic places, now they are jam packed like a village mela. Car ownership even within middle-class was 1 in x houses..now every house in middle class has 1+ cars/house… my milk dilivery man, newspaper man(yes still get one), plumber, electrician they all come on motorcycle…everyone has a cell phone…) about the changes that are not visible are - Microsoft’s Satya Nadella says the maximum number of online learning courses/certificates on its platform LinkedIn are being taken by Indians. MS also owns the online source repository GitHub where people store their computer programs. As per Nadella the maximum number of AI related programs are being contributed by people in India..) And this is after 200 years of brutal colonisation where the British sucked everything out of this land.. I can safely say that Prof. Mody is hopelessly out of tune. You take any nation Japan, Sweden, Germany, UK, Argentina, Canada, USA…each one has some very fundamental problem that these nations will face in coming 20 years. Japan won’t even have people left 😱…while in Sweden(all same looking white speaking same language having same religion and high per capita GDP resulted in Women thinking not producing children is progress 🤦‍♂️ and now immigrants will make in 3rd world in next 20 years) ..USA(run on printing dollars and exporting inflation…the day dollar is not a reserve currency, I can assure you they have no clue what’s going to hit them)..Canada(🤔 well doesn’t even matter to the world anyways) India after colonisation had gone so low that given its low base it can only go up.

Also, the GDP Vs Employment argument is also old. At the end of the day what matters is how productive a society is. Because we as a nation produce enough (say food grain output) govt can procure internally and distribute food…the result of this is that 800 million people get certain quantity of free rice/wheat. This has resulted in many industrialists/entrepreneurs complaining about shortage of labor(these people who have enough food don’t want to go and work in factories). In the west they are trying to bring the idea of ‘Universal Basic Income’ where a certain amount of cash is transferred to every citizen … something of that sort will eventually happen because of automation and hyper productivity. As the Italian observer Pareto 80% of the wealth is with 20% of the people…it has since been seen as a natural law(In quality control they say 80% of the defects are caused by 20% of the reasons)… So 80-90% of the work will be done by small % of population(well not 20 but much less that the 80)… Also with hyper productivity many people will be able to work for day 15-25 years and then have enough assets to not have to work in traditional jobs in their 40s onwards(ie work for only 20% of your life) Though I haven’t read Mr. Mody’s book, I checked the description on Amazon… and my sense is that the author may be hopelessly out of tune(can’t blame him, things are moving just too fast).. and as the famous statists says goes ‘Some people use statistics like a drunkard uses a lamp-post, more for support than for illumination’ the author may just be using data to confirm his bias and pre conceived notion(I don’t know just a possibility).

Our education system may not be very good but we’ve been still able to send a satellite to Mars in first attempt that too without spending too much money on it
