Since India's independence, the agriculture industry has continued to be the country's primary employer and source of income. Even though the agricultural sector employed 72% of all working people in India in 1947, most of the country's poor population are farmers, around 70%. Although the share of agriculture in India's economy has steadily decreased to less than 15% due to the strong growth rates of the industrial and service sectors, its significance for the nation's economic and social development cannot be overstated.
Even though India is regarded as a worldwide agricultural powerhouse, the industry faces significant problems. It is the second-largest producer of fruit, vegetables, tea, farmed fish, cotton, sugarcane, rice and wheat. India produces the most milk, pulses, and spices worldwide and has a giant herd of cattle (buffaloes). However, while contributing significantly to the economy, the Indian farmer lives in poverty.
