When I went to Vietnam, I was surprised the way they have maintained the trains there. People take responsibility to take care of the train.

Sad reality is that most of the ticket-less passengers aren't the ones who can't afford, but they simply don't want to spend even if they can afford the tickets. They know that TTEs and the Railway police won't do anything. Very often you have to fight for your reserved berth with these without ticket people and they even act like goons and hijack the seat.

Hygiene? No Cleanliness? No Discipline? No Intelligence? No Empathy? No Kindness? No Common sense? No Concerned about Religion? YES

This is an excellent topic! Foreigner here giving her two cents on this topic. I have traveled on Indian trains many times. As a tourist, I can afford a better train class, that's a reality. In 2019 I traveled from Agra to Varanasi on a sleeper train and the experience was really, really bad. I will say this with respect to the dignity of people in India: there is a general lack of hygiene that has nothing to do with how slow or fast or modern is a train. People are not capable of using a washroom in a civilized manner! I truly don't understand why people throw their garbage on the streets. Why people damage a toilet throwing all sorts of garbage! I had to literally stand in the washroom, doing a split to use the toilet!!! It was filthy to a level of almost vomiting. The problem is that people in India are not willing to change the way they used to do things in the past but expect to have a better life. The main problem is in their minds. It feels as if people don't care about basic hygiene and social manners.

One mega point is about 64% of railways revenue is spent on salaries, pensions and more on other perks. Which is insane for a PSU with staff to user ratio is very high. I knew a 80yr old dadima collecting around 40k in railway pension of her late husband who passed in mid nineties. This problem is there with many gov departments. This limits on how much money can be spent on actual infra. Also bureaucracy is insane with British mindset and many levels especially lower levels. NRMU has opposition to all major changes that can let rail earn more but jeopardize their jobs or even stop recruiting in future. Veg-automatic ticket gates, guard less trains etc etc. The rot is internal and external If you ever want to see NMRUs mindset, just go to any rail office and see the kind of pics they have on their calenders.

As a south indian i have advice for fellow south indians: never travel in sleeper class in trains travelling through UP, bihar, assam bcz others with no tickets will sit in ur seat irrespective of ur reservation n doesn’t let u sit. (Saying out of my own experience)

I think it also aligns with how the public uses it. I have seen workers cleaning it at regular intervals but people just eat and throw under the seats. And the last time I traveled some criminals on the train were constantly yelling at us to give them money. Luckily police came in time and got them out of the train. I couldn't sleep well that night. It was a lot traumatic and I thought we were going to get ourselves punched. 😑

I recently visited France, Italy and Switzerland, and after using their Public transport, I can say that we have a long way to go.

As a person who has worked on contracts for indian railway. the work on govt logistics side for sanctioning works(6~9months after tender), allocating funds etc etc. for track work and other railway projects is extremely slow. The only time work is done faster when there is election interest. Then there is the corruption on every step of the whole railway dept. I am not aware of passenger experience side so cannot comment on day to day of these things.

Moral-Lack of population control -Lack of discipline

Simple formula: Never travel in general coach if you are travelling in UP - Bihar route. Overcrowding is ok..but uncleanliness is not ok. I am from Bihar and what I realised that AC coaches are much cleaner. This shows that education has a big role to play.

During school i had to take the metro in Calcutta, i was almost accustomed to access controlled railways. But during college for tuitions i had to take the local trains.while i and most of my batchmates had monthly tickets, a majority of the daily short distance travellers didnt have any tickets and they flounted it.. i still find it very weird. Grown men and women not taking a ticket and proud of it.

I have travelled in patna kota many times as a kota student , i have faced this hygiene issue even in 2nd nd 3rd Ac .And ABOUT timing can't really say, i once reached my home patna from kota in 35 HOURS . NEVER felt better that this issue is getting acknowledged.

I swear to God, I'll never watch a video on Indian Railways while having food. They always have a toilet scene 😂

The biggest jumla is certain "Desh ka Garib jaayega kaha.." but let me tell you about a particular incident. One of my friends boarded an express train from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction. He was inside a general coach and the train was scheduled to reach the destination (station closest to our university) the next day at around 11:30 am. We were there to meet with him at the station. He is from a pretty stable, rather rich background. He has a Kawasaki ZX-10R, uses a MacBook Pro and has an iPhone Pro series handset. When we asked him why he was travelling in such an uncomfortable and crowded coach when the very same train had AC 1st, 2 and 3 tier coaches, he said that he didn't spend any money on the ticket and got mixed with the crowd in order to evade the Ticket Collector. I have many such friends who have this mentality and show spending negligence for travelling in trains.😢

North Indians are one of the main reasons behind over crowding in south India... Pan masala boys crowding and steeling in south Indian trains

I was a student till last year and often made train journeys from West Bengal to Tamil Nadu. Before my college, I never travelled anything but sleeper non AC. But one journey from WB to TN made me gag cuz me and my father couldn't use the washroom 1.5 days💀 as it was overflowing. Since then I'm using AC compartment so to ensure the washrooms aren't dirty. The problem still persist. A majority from North belt come to South as labourers. And in AC, majority are bangladeshi patients who come to South hospitals for better treatment. One may find me discriminatory, but I endured worst toilets and to flush them myself and it was only because of these people. We also need to educate people who can pay Rs 2k tickets but trash openly. Not always the Railways are wrong. Edit- Stop fighting here. I didn't mean Biharis. It's the Bangladeshi people who can afford AC tickets and still won't flush their toilets. Y'all don't even read what I commented 💀

Ahhh😩 I had these experience 2 days before though I had confirmed seats with my family then also train was so crowded that people with no tickets were sitting on our seats . Before sitting they were like please show humanity, we only have to go few stations ahead and some of them sitting so comfortably on our seats like it was theirs only😂 .

Education is one way forward. Problem is not due to over population. China manages its population. So, India can also manage it. Government should experiment with Private companies partnership for some routes/trains. Just like what they did with Airports.

Actually south trains are very clean, every year we go to banglore from solapur(Maharashtra) to our grandparents home, never so dirty toilets but in some rural places near banglore people ask you to adjust seat but when you refuse they'll go away! but in AC compartments I dont face any problems

Very balanced analysis. 1 point which you missed out was subsidizing passenger fare from freight revenue (i.e. charging higher freight rates) is doing more harm than good. It makes Indian industry less competitive which in turn affects job creation.

We travelled to Bihar Agricultural University for an Undergraduate Academic Convention and reserved 3rd AC tickets. We were shocked to see that people at night came while we were sleeping and said seat dedo hm 4 ghnte baad utar jaenge. Boy it was so hard to save our seats, they weren't ready to budge. Even when we managed to save our seats , they left while saying that we were mean for not giving them seat and chose to sleep

We need private players in the Indian railways system. The idea of railways doing social work while also introducing premium trains is contradictory. Only way I can see is by letting private investors get into this space and revive the system.

Dude it's mostly UP, Bihar & West Bengal trains that are dirty and unsafe, I've traveled from Tamil Nadu to Rajasthan never had such problem.

This problem is mostly in North. Specifically trains towards Bihar& UP. In south the situation is better.

i once visited shanghai and had an opportunity to travel in the high speed railways, man oh man, 2013 the railway station not only looked like an airport, but also "functioned" like an airport, you cannot go in without a ticket no waiting ticket thus overcrowding was never an issue although being the largest population back then, tickets were checked three times while entering the station, the baggage as well as before baording the train, after boarding the train, continuous cleaning of the station, no dirt nothing, i visited a hostel where my friends where living back then, while going up the flat staircase i could see red stains on the stairway, i was shocked, even living there people were accustomed too such habits, i really felt dissappointed.

i remember taking the vande bharat train for the first time. it was very clean and tidy and i was impressed by the governments work. it was legit like travelling by airplane. after sometime i visited the washroom and there was this lady who said no matter what the indian government does there is no satisfaction at all, i just ignored and waited for my turn in the washroom. the washroom was super clean and after sometime again i had to use the washroom and it was dirty, the guy who came out did'nt flush and the flush worked pretty well. at this point no matter what the govt does its the public mindset and lack of civic sense that is responsible for this.

Finally someone actually notices the problem and create a video on it. It's a very huge problem especially in some poor states like BIHAR where I live and whenever I travel I encounter with the same problem. Government needs to be strict with it.

My father had booked 4 IPL tickets for some farmers in Madhya Pradesh. They wanted to watch the MI vs RCB match. Their train was to arrive in Mumbai at 11:30am. It got delayed so many times that they reached at 10:30 pm. It was their dream to watch the match but it was shattered due the train being delayed. I cannot imagine the anxiety they must have felt.

Living in Delhi, i have observed that you will see this dirty and uncultured behaviour almost exclusively in North India. Whereas South Indians, even the poorer ones, are extremely well-behaved; the trains are kept very neat and they always buy tickets. Education is the only way out.

Possible solutions:- 1. Dedicated freight corridors They can be phased out from the tracks used by passenger trains enabling the speed to increase. It will increase the profit for railways also 2. Introduce trains which have complete unreserved coaches only, especially in the route having huge demand from migrant workers 3. Promote luxurious trains(like the Maharaja express) especially for tourists who have high spending capacity. This enables a way to earn more 4. Capacity building of tracks, which increases the speed. If speed increases, the frequency of train services which increase, which will help reduce overcrowding(since they have more options)

Konkan Railway is the best route to travel. It is because it is not directly under railway ministry but is a corporation. Also the people of Konkan are way more hygienic than others especially the north

It has already been 5 years since i last went to gorakhpur my hometown. As it's very uncomfortable and unsafe to travel by train with family. I really pray this issue gets solved very soon

Now because of Vande Bharat, other local trains are getting late by at least half an hour, which is frustrating. Our country needs more trains. Boy, the difference when I travel to Delhi from Kerala even in third AC is pathetic. When the train crosses Karnataka, people are just hopping in without tickets or in some cases they would only have general tickets. Once when I visited Mathura, things got out of hand, nobody had any tickets on the train and people were piling up.

Not Just in India its the problem of whole South Asia Pakistan Bangladesh India etc Its a habit we South Asian can never change, so don't expect it will happen in future too. These are basic morals that have to be taught from home

I’m living in Germany and was surprised to know the density of tracks. This ensures large number of trains can run efficiently and faster. Also, Railway allows private companies to run operations which makes a competitive market which overall improves the quality.

Railway should be administered by private companies because these corrupt bureaucrats aren’t gonna do anything just like airports.

As a Railway Employee I totally agree with your arguments. That's why the Dedicated Freight Corridor is being constructed, once it's fully operational we can see the huge traffic for Goods Trains also we will have less traffic on the main line where Passenger Trains are being operated so that we can run more passengers trains with punctuality and eventually it'll benefit Indian Railways.

The solution for this problem is to make increase the price of train tickets and setup in and out gates in railway stations and this makes people only to allow who take tickets

I had boarded a special train to go to a pilgrimage place and what you said is correct. Special train only increases the traffic among the trains. Most of the time they allow other trains to go ahead at an intersection and keeps the special train on a hold. Our train was rescheduled twice and then it was 15 hrs late.

Travelled from Chennai,TamilNadu to Delhi in 3ac t was all smooth till we reached vijayawada,khammam station In AP,Rest of journey even 3AC coach had people with no tickets and they were asking passengers to adjust and sit,and few smoked inside ac compartments without any sense,the journey was uncomfortable till it reached ranikamalapati,bhopal stations.

As someone from kerala, we normally avoid SL class of trains going / coming from Bihar, UP, Bengal, Jharkhand and Assam. There is no way someone can enter in it. The smell would be horrible of Gudka and they put trash all over the floor. Toilet will be a mess and there will be double the occupancy in SL.😂🙏

All of these problems stem from overpopulation and infrastructure (education and transport) not being able to keep up with it. Not promoting birth control after independence has been this country's greatest mistake.

I was going to IIT MADRAS this year for admission from Bhubaneswar to Chennai 🙃. My ticket got cancel😭.... And i had to go through Unreserved, . And it was my Nightmare 😭 People's were crowded. I had to stand straight for 16 hours straight, I only move when someone needed Toliet, Smells were Worst 🤮🤮 No one there was supportive. I am still in Trauma but seeing that situation. I will never go to train if i am Unreserved. Only Indian Population is growing but trains are same like 90s only - Indian huge population can't withstand this. Govt. Should do something

Bravo.. a topic that is so important and relevant to this ever growing country but hardly is ever been discussed.. Railways are a way of eating out govt funds just as many other portfolios are .. but we cannot shy away from the fact that a basic Indian has no idea about hygiene, civic sense, responsibilities & his role in uplifting the general condition of this nation.. they just loiter, spit ,shit and expect others to clean for them .. fr example- during covid not wearing a mask was fined and spitting on the road was not .. this is our janta janardan and the same people are in the administration.. so jab khud nahi badalna chahoge toh dusre kaise badlenge auur yeh desh kaisa badlega !!

I went to a general train as a student... It was a poop water overflow in the toilet... no place to seat and even the train outer part had poop...😢 that was a nightmare journey for me as a student...

My experience Me and my dad once took a general train from kosi (up) to delhi due to some emergency but when we board a train it was like a whole nightmare at 7:30in the morning the coach was crowded and the toilet gate was open and people where throwing garbage and so many people sleeping on the floor and me and my dad wasn't able to stand there so we literally just hold onto a uppper berth seat to support yourself to stand and finally after 2,30 hrs we reached delhi and struggled so much to getoff the train . After that experience we decided never to travel in general coaches

This problem doesn’t exist in entire India.. I never seen such over crowding in South India. So these issues happen majorly in UP and Bihar. So its not an Indian problem. Also you gave an example for Mangaluru where regular couch converted to AC. Mangaluru is a place where many upper middle class people or rich people live. Almost everyone can afford the AC travel and this change was necessary there.

Railway system me garbar hai. 1) jaise reserved coaches me seat full ho jane se ticket nahi milta waise hi unreserved coach me kar dena chahiye. Ki ek specific amount of log hi jayenge. Fir ticket na mile. 2) Police aur TT ko unreserved coaches me rehna chahiye. Wo log bas AC coach me rehte hai. 3) bahut bar unreserved coach me ticket checking nahi hota hai. 4) police rehne se jo zyada gandagi failata hai usko fine maro 5) regular saaf hona chahiye jaise AC couch me hota hai 6) Station ke bahar bhi tickets ka regular checking nahi hota hai 7) Population control karna bahut bahut zyada imp. hai , isse bahut problems generate ho rahe hai

I am a college student from West Bengal. I am from the northern part of the state and i have to travel to the southern part where my college is often ( 12-14 hours). Most of the times our college declare holidays 2-5 days prior and because the holidays only last for 4-5 days (2 days holiday on working days + Sunday+ Saturday+ 1 day college miss) i need to quickly take action. It's impossible to get tickets 2 days before the journey that's why I buy tatkal ticket most of the time. My luck don't work everytime. That why i had to travel on general class for about 4 times. Travelling in general class is a nightmare to me😢. If you have big luggages don't ever think about traveling on general class 😅

South Indian Trains are much better in my opinion. Every time I travel to North India, particularly through UP/Bihar. The things I note almost every where there: 1) Paan spit in every nook and corner. 2) You can't even leave your reserved 3AC or 2AC, seats will be poached by unreserved people who are mostly from Bihar. 3) Toilet Flush won't work, always clogged or you’ll have an unclean one. 4) You need a proper chain lock to lock your luggage, else 100% it will be stolen. Whenever I travel across TN, Kerala or Karnataka, I've seen trains much cleaner more frequently. In trains like Vaigai Express(runs daily between Chennai and Madurai), even the general compartments are maintained very neatly and people generally practice decorum.

I have travelled many times in trains, but I have to say, when the train reaches Bihar or West Bangal, it's suddenly filled with people. I am from Assam and here trains are not heavily crowded.

Salaries Dene ko paise nahi hai. Kyu nahi hai ? Kyuki saara paisa crony capitalists, politicians aur election campaigns me jata hai. And yes I agree with what is said in this video. On the basis of my experience, I have frequented the Hapa-Mumbai route almost 40-50 times by now in the past 3 years, on trains alone. Another 10-20 times by road. On the one hand, there is indeed undeniable progress. Saurashtra Mail, a commonly used train to go to Mumbai has a "new" train, it's timings were changed and all in all is better now than pre-2020. Similarly there is also Duranto, which is expensive but provides premium experience and is faster. Simply from observation, the number one issue plaguing railway is the length of tracks available. Even if Vande Bharat trains aren't launched (and given the routes they are choosing, we don't need them), to simply cater to the existing trains, fast or slow, we need more tracks. Lots more. Second, the existing trains already have the capacity to be 10-30 kms faster than their usual speeds. But they can't do that because 1) the tracks and 2) it would ruin the scheduling of other trains. All the trains of the same route will have to run faster AFTER new tracks are laid to make railway travel faster and efficient. Then comes the part where we use trains such as Vande Bharat which can be used premium and fast travel.

Once upon a time, I was traveling on a train. I found a big piece of SHIT on one of the seats. I still remember that.

Replacement of unreserved (general) coaches by AC coaches is good in the longer run. The more you push the common passengers towards a better travel experience, the more they'll choose not to subject themselves to the torture that traveling in GEN/SL coaches is. While it's not a choice for a lot of poor people, some people choose to travel like they've always did despite having come out of poverty.

Toilets are the most disgusting part of a train journey. I love travelling in trains but nowadays I choose not to cuz the toilets are horrible. The constant delays are annoying and makes me feel ashamed cuz in countries like japan the schedule is so strict and well maintained. China has left us far behind on everything. I prefer air travel cuz I can afford it but wht abt those who can't? Are they gna suffer for forever?

I'm from Bihar, and I understand how big of an issue this is. I got tear twice during festivals, and on my 1700 km journey, I skipped eating to avoid using the bathroom.

Bangalore - Mangalore train route is one of the most scenic and beautiful routes, but now it has become filthy because of people throwing thrash outside the train window.

Trains which goes to Punjab,South India,Bengal are damn good and clean always also crowd free... 😊 But trains which goes to Delhi and north india are always crowded and dirty as well... We even can't enter in those trains even if have confirmed ticket😢

Old men without tickets capture your seat and when you ask them to move politely, they say ," we can adjust " . Shit's annoying last time i was on my way to college from my home state , i saw these ppl capturing women's seat when these women complained they continued on ignoring her and told her there is no space for her in HER OWN BOOKED SEAT .... after a while of verbal quarrel they gave have some space to sit in the corner mind you two of the four ppl on that lower berth didn't even have a general ticket . And on the opposite berth i was compressed in almost the same circumstances.

I think people from UP & Bihar know about Sharamjeevi express & Toofan Express. Railway continues increasing of AC coach leads to overcrowding in other coach. Once you enter in Bihar they say there's no reservation till Patna Jn. Even if you have confirm seats in sleeper that won't matter, you've to adjust and beg other locals to give some space on your own confirm seats. And if you dare to say no, damm they gonna shower you with all cuss words & sometimes curse your family too. Same goes with AC 2& 3 these locals will gather at coach gate and slowly try to take your seat in ac coach as well. It's not like they can't afford train ticket instead they choose not to buy.

True💯 I travelled from Pune to Delhi and it was worst experience...even if my seat was reserved one lady was seated on my sleeper seat overall the journey, the toilet smell was throughout the compartment, the train named as superfast express it was too slow these conditions makes hard for me to book the next train ticket

Omg, I’m an Australian Indian and I’ve grown up in Australia, so I’m not used to unsanitary conditions in public transport and didn’t know what to expect of Indian transport. I went to India with my family last year and we had plans to go to Varanasi from Hyderabad. My family was able to book 1st Class from Hyderabad to Varanasi but going back we had no other option but to book the general compartment and just the clips in this video are giving me PTSD. 28 hours of overcrowding, sleeping upright and disgusting bathrooms where I couldn’t help but gag 😭. Never again.

Govt making more Vande Bharat trains to get votes instead of running more trains for common man is the main reason for this. For trains such as Vande Bharat, ticket prices are too high for majority of Indians. Existing infrastructure should be improved and expanded significantly.

I live in germany and here the local train is better , faster, and cleaner than vandebharat and you can travel anywhere in germany with these trains by buying a ticket for a month that costs 4000 rupees.And did i mention any other transport like bus, tram is also free.This is the cheapest train i am talking about forget the intercity fast trains which will be like bullet trains to india.

Watching this while actually travelling in an Indian train. Geetanjali express towards Nagpur. Where the second AC coach has no power socket in the side berths. And toilet is as horrible as it comes. Smh

Cost of ticket from delhi to kerela in rajdhani express is Rs. 5500(3tier AC) whereas airfares for direct flights are getting as low as 6000. Rajdhani takes roughly 40hrs while flight takes 3 hrs. Often in western countries train fares exceeds airfare. I dont think Indian railways is sustainable and will not survive without subsidies in future.

Train starts and ends in South India is good and safe to travel in sleeper class. North Indian sleeper class are general class and general class is like a wagon tragedy.

If the government isnt able to turn the tides in favour of the Indian Railway systems, and ends up giving its control to PRIVATE companies... I wonder what the impact would be (it probably wont be the best for those with low economic stability)
