I know I'm a little older so I may be out of date but we used to call it the engineering design process. I'm a mechanical engineer and this is a process we do constantly.
Wow! I can't believe I haven't stumbled upon your vlogs sooner. This is the first episode of yours that I've seen and I really enjoyed it. I'm a 2nd year Industrial Design student at the University of Johannesburg (South Africa) and I love the course so much, I genuinely can't stop talking about it! I'm not the best compared to my other class mates which can be discouraging at times but I really do hope to learn a lot from you. hey man i had a question in product designing do u have to know what parts are being used and how they are used to make a product u designed like if a made a phone or something do i have to know what are the parts that are being put inside it or my sole focus is the convinence and look of the product?

"Usually" is the key word that Archetype used. There is a breed of industrial designers that license their designs. This is almost always the case for furniture designers actually. So yes, sometimes designers do get royalties.
@@Michael-mp1iu you may need to make a name for yourself before getting to licence your products. I think the most common case would be an ID being hired to design a product and just that, of course you can gain some recognition through it, but not as much as commissions
