That leg from temple to college station would be the best way for Killeen and Waco get into Houston... when the Park n' Ride Shinkansen is built.

Honestly we just need a high speed rail connecting the Big 4 cities starting in Houston through San Antonio and Austin to Dallas and maybe a southeastern rail going back into Houston. It would be so convenient and save so much time especially if it could pass the airports but I’ll admit idk how that would work in San Antonio since our airport is surrounded by a lot of density but idk I just think we need a high speed rail in Texas

I always took State Hwy 36 from Temple when I wanted to go to Houston, and I would take it to Sealy to get to I-10. I was born in Temple and went to Rice University, and so I went back and forth a lot. This was 1968-72, and back then, I could also take the Santa Fe train between Temple and Houston.

One day I was driving on the freeway going toward Killeen and noticed the I-14 markers and thought, am I dreaming? Is this an alternate reality? But no, it wasn't. From Augusta, GA to Fayetteville, NC swinging SW of Columbia, SC would be a nice extension. Guard elements from GA, SC, & NC utilize these path to go to Liberty, Eisenhower and Jackson regularly. Plus various these different installations host various schools for individual development and would ease movement for those going for additional training. There are some long haul, heavy transportation units capable of moving Abrams and other heavy armored elements. Just a road capable of allowing those loads would be a great training opportunity for those transpiration elements. Road time with load would be a win there. I can see a trip from Liberty to Eisenhower. Stopping for some range time for a few days and back to Liberty as a great training event.

I believe that desolate road you took in Louisiana is the same one I took back in 2020 when I was doing over the road work. I had to travel from Atlanta, GA to Jacksonville, TX to make a delivery (via cargo vans, no CDL stuff). The next day I was given an assignment to leave TX, make a pickup in Louisiana, and then drive back to TX to make the dropoff. While in LA heading back to TX, I remember taking a long road that felt like the middle of nowhere. I rarely saw any other car and it took awhile before i saw any homes or businesses. I remember hoping and praying I wouldn't break down in that area because it had nothing but me, the road, and trees. Some of those pics you showed of that road are looking pretty familiar.

Long-time Georgia resident and road geek. US 80 coming into Columbus is not up to interstate highway standards. Some tight turns and narrow shoulders, though GDOT has improved over the years. With GDOT recently completing the Fall Line Freeway (GA 540), I don't think they are in a hurry to upgrade to an interstate. Additional complications around Macon. While I-75/I-16 interchange is being upgraded, Ocmulgee National Historical Park on a short list to become a full National Park soon, which will limit options to build freeways out of Macon on the eastern side of town.
@fishingthelist4017
@fishingthelist4017 3 месяца назад
They will have to get around Midland because it is a high growth area that makes following the US80 corridor difficult. Phenix City is not as built up where I-14 would be routed, but there are still a few areas that would displace people and businesses. The stretch between River Road and the river could use some straightening regardless of whether or not it becomes I-14.
@evansjohnc
@evansjohnc 3 месяца назад
At this point it would probably just have to pass north of town and connect to 185 and 280/431.
@fishingthelist4017
@fishingthelist4017 3 месяца назад
@@evansjohnc I think if I-14 gets built, they will have to run it through Columbus and Phenix City to connect with I-85 near Wire Road. One of the big selling points of the project is improving economic opportunities in low income rural areas, and Macon County fits that description much more than Lee County and the Auburn-Opelika area. Columbus and Phenix City politicians and business leaders will want some of that economic benefit as well, so they will not want to see it all go north of town. The Army will probably have a say in it too, and they will want I-14 as close to Fort Benning as possible.

The route in Georgia has been around for at least 25 years. Usually referred to as "The Fall Line Freeway", it was the impetus for the US80/GA 540 upgrade from 2 lanes to a 4-lane divided highway om the 90s. The most logical route around Macon is to complete the triangle from Robins AFB to Jeffersonville, but the land is surprisingly swampy and has some significant Native American sites that have to be worked around.

Most of the Fall Line Freeway across central Georgia is close to interstate grade already. The biggest complications are the few towns that fought for the highway to run straight through town, and the Macon area. Either it would remain a complicated web of shared routes until the east side of the city, or building a route completely bypassing Macon unless you jump on I-75.

3:15 although you describe it correctly in your voiceover, part of your red line is along I-35 going up to temple then down along H K Dodgden Loop which isn’t up to interstate standards but has potential. That turns into US-190. I live in that area and can’t see any mention of I-14 continuing on but guides you into I-35 Northbound toward Waco. At 3:55 you show to take I-35 southbound toward Austin you actually have to take an exit and travel on a service road to ramp on. They way they do this feels more to do with future planning of the I-14 route sharing with 35 for a bit into Temple, rather than just “most of the traffic wants to go that way”

I enjoyed this one because I recently was around a lot of these parts of the South just last year. As a Georgian, I can tell you: - US 80 is 90% interstate standard around Columbus. Nothing to really do here. Also the parts toward Warner Robbins is easily upgradable and was built with an eye towards becoming limited access at some point. - They're currently upgrading the I-75/I-16 junction right now. Remember, I -16 carries all that Port of Savannah traffic so anything connecting to it is a big deal. - GDOT probably left that part out of the study-- there's a big need for traffic to get to/from the port and across the South. RIght now options are limited to using I-10 or I-16 to I-75 to I-20 West. Or GA 504/500. (any 500 series state route here is a "Development corridor BTW and was funded solely for exactly the same reason as I-14 got a "yellow light".) - For the above reasons, I-14 in Georgia will likely be Columbus Warner Robbins only at first. It makes the most sense right now.

The time to have discussed I-14 in Georgia was twenty years ago, before the entire corridor was improved as a four-lane divided at-grade facility, including the construction of significant sections on new alignment. In fact, I even suggested it in the late nineties in an op-ed the Macon Telegraph asked me to write. Here's an idea, though: ask Google how to get from Tuskegee to Macon, and one of the alternate routes will be via GA 109 and US 41, cutting across Georgia from LaGrange to Forsyth and entering Macon on I-75. That route is only six miles and eight minutes longer than the obvious route via GA 96 near Columbus. Why is this important? Unbeknownst to most people, the Freight Logistics Plan that GDOT released in 2010 recommended a four-lane corridor from LaGrange to Macon, apparently as an improvement of existing GA 109 and 74. It was expected that it'd also serve truck traffic to and from I-20 in Alabama via the already-widened US 27 corridor. The benefit/cost ratio calculated for the project was 18:1, making it a huge outlier among the projects evaluated. If I-14 was a serious proposition, it'd be a way to get this highly desirable built. As it happens, GDOT did a study of a LaGrange-Macon corridor, though it assumed widening and/or otherwise improving existing GA 109 and GA 74 all the way to I-475, thereby requiring traffic to slog through suburban Macon streets rather than entering the freeway system fifteen miles from downtown Macon. The to-me-obvious alternative of going directly from Woodbury to I-75 between Forsyth and Bolingbroke wasn't considered, surely due to cost and the related infeasibility of incremental implementation.

A large part of south Alabama is incredibly isolated. While the new interstate would help, ideally there would be a spur route down from 14 or 65 to connect to fort Rucker/Novosel and then to i-10. And really, southeast Alabama and southwest Georgia, aka the "wiregrass region" is surprisingly underserved by interstate. I've never understood why.

Fort Polk has been renamed to FORT JOHNSON🇺🇸 And yes highway system in Louisiana is very troublesome, as are the bridges . But I49 interstate makes quick travels north to south. But I believe the WORST INTERSTATE IS ( I-10 ) with I-20 a close second. 2-16-2024

I just think it's crazy that they want a completely new interstate to connect Montgomery, Al to Macon, Ga via Columbus, Ga when they could just extend I-16 west and if they really wanted to, they could extend I-16 to I-20/I-59. Meanwhile, I-14 could still be a new interstate highway but instead of going north east to head towards Montgomery, it could continue heading east along the U.S. HWY 84 corridor going through Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia and eventually ending at the port city of New Brunswick, Ga.

I would like to see I-14, but what I would really like is the I-3 corridor. Driving on I-75 from Atlanta south is a nightmare. Why can't they build roads in Georgia that don't go through that monstrosity?

They should just make I-14 go from Meridian to Augusta. Then just upgrade US-190 to interstate standards but just leave it at that. US-290 is in bad need of an upgrade, so I think Texas should start there first

I think I've taken a few of those "Texas Exits" you've mentioned. Might've come close to getting stuck. Anyway. It's too bad I69 and this I14 is clogged up behind other infrastructure priorities. Wasn't there a multi-billion dollar bill s'posed to fund this stuff federally? It would really help here in Mississippi.

There has been talk for years of extending I85 west from Montgomery on the US80 corridor and connecting to the "Bypass to bypass the bypass" outer loop south of Montgomery, so that section will eventually be built, but highway funds are limited, and a Mobile Bay bridge will probably come next now that I22 is finished. One problem that I see around Columbus is the longer the project is delayed, the more built up the areas at either end of the JR Allen expressway become. Routing through Phenix City and Ladonia could be done, but Midland will be difficult. There are also some sharp turns at Midland and at the river that may not be up to interstate standards. As for Macon, I hope that they go south of town and not through it. Following I75 and 16 is somewhat convoluted.

Am I the only one that thinks that Albany, Georgia should be part of the corridor instead of Columbus? Cause Albany is around 70,000 people if I recall correctly and it currently has no direct access to Interstate system. The proposed I-175 from Cordele to Albany was canceled long ago. Having this route go through Albany could combat its deteriorating population.

Why not have I-18 which connect from I-85 in Tuskegee Alabama to I-20/I-520 in Augusta Georgia instead of fractured or (2) of I-14? I-14 will be only in Texas, but not in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. I-18 is Georgia will fit in the grid pattern between I-16, and I-20 between Macon Georgia and Augusta Georgia for approximately 200 miles.😢. I don’t want to see the (2) of the same interstate numbers anymore, and they are: I-42 between Raleigh and Morehead City North Carolina, and I-42 between I-35 near Perry Oklahoma and I-49 in Springdale Arkansas, I-74 between Davenport Iowa and Cincinnati Ohio, and again in North Carolina, I-76 between Akron Ohio to Camden New Jersey, and again between Denver Colorado and I-80 near Ogallah Nebraska, I-84 between Portland Oregon to northeastern Utah near the Wyoming border, and I-84 which connect from Scranton Pennsylvania to I-90 (Mass Pike) near Boston Massachusetts, I-86 in Idaho, and I-86 in Pennsylvania and New York, I-87 in New York and I-87 between Raleigh North Carolina and Norfolk Virginia, and I-88 in Illinois and I-88 in New York.

Quick question for you..... You do know the interstate system is technically a valid military target right? It was built by an order of Congress expressly for military use. Just because civilians utilize military infrastructure doesnt make it safe. Is the interstate system in a state of repair to even be able to handle mobilization?
@MileageMike485
@MileageMike485 3 месяца назад
Not sure what you're asking. Any vital infrastructure is a military target. Bridges, tunnels, rails, water pipes, power plants, etc. The interstate system was primarily built for civilian purposes, though the defense aspect was also touted as an added benefit. You can read about the myths vs. facts here: highways.dot.gov/highway-history/interstate-system/50th-anniversary/interstate-highway-system-myths#question3

Personally, I think the current system is fine. I just got done driving from California to Florida. I took the I-8, to the I-10, to the I-20, then the I-59, and back to the I-10. There was nothing wrong with the way the drive went, and while I maybe would have welcomed another route, I think cramming another interstate between the I-10 and the I-20 would be far too chaotic, and on a local level, might damage the already slow business many of the current interstate towns depend on.
