Traditionally, iPhones have taken JPEG photos, just like most other smartphones. But starting with iOS 11, the format switched to HEIC. Which caused some problems for iPhone users. But Apple did have a couple reasons for the change.
I would like to see a video explaining why „system“ or „other“ is sometimes taking so extremely much storage space. I think this is a common problem. I and many of my friends had this.
As a Samsung user, I also use HEIC for it's advantages. Samsung phones have JPG as default, but they provide option to use HEIC instead. I also use Samsungs option to record videos in HEVC instead of AVC which is default.
@@Erick-dn4wr not really, the app needs to compile it not iOS. Discord and other apps run a special compiler in discords case it's mainly to make image quality better for each byte used for said image. It does come at the cost of all images being rendered the same, altho if you download the image it'll install it from the CDA giving you access to the original file type. Very cool
U’m never able to see my HEIC photos on my PC , they don’t even show up on Macs. I have to go to a separate site and convert each photo to a jpeg to view the photos
Thank you for this clear and concise explanation! Your video helped me understand the nuances between JPEG and HEIC formats. Your efforts in breaking down the technical details make it so much easier for viewers like me to grasp. Keep up the great work! 🙌
@@religiousindustrialaliens ios 9, rocking with old games that is better than nowadays boring games🗿 anyproblems? Oh, i still play pibg and online games on ios 13
I switched back to JPEG instantly when I got my iPhone because I needed the compatibility. But you can take pictures with your iPhone in HEIC and then plug it in to your Windows or Mac and it automatically changes the file type of the taken photo.
Don't know about Mac, but I doubt Windows converts it automatically. Windows tends to leave user files in their original format unless user manually converts them (which is not a hassle in the slightest).
@@redbark7770 No, it does not. Windows does not have permission to write/edit files in iPhone. So, iPhone automatically converts it to jpg so that you won't see compatibility issues in windows
Apparently, iPhones starting from the 7 and up can take photos in HEIC format. So if you're a 6s or older user, you're stuck with JPEG. As an owner of one, I don't really mind.
0:30 i can't belive you got this mixed up seeing as my grandparents get this mixed up, but that "storage full" popup isn't for icloud storage, its just internal storage. Buying iCloud storage would only offload your pictures and videos into the cloud, which like my grandparents complain about, doesn't actually free up that much space. This was really only a problem for people on 16 and 32 gb iphones.
Hello, 62 gb here to tell you that it does free up a lot of space especially when photos can easily take up half your storage if your phone is older than 3 years
The only gripe I have with HEIC is that 90% of other devices I use doesn't support it. Sure, for one or two photos I upload to google drive I can take an extra step to convert it, but do it with 20+ photos and oh boy. My work-around is using iCloud Photos on PC then uploading them, whenever possible.
Exactly. How can people not see it instantly? It’s compressing more, and most likely that means loss of detail especially when it can get away with lumping similar bits together. Those branches are one case of being similar enough, and the grass on the ground is another. The latter is harder to spot the difference, but those branches are fine loose entities and cannot be clumped together without looking funny... or fuzzy.
I was wondering why when you send videos to android it was so low quality. I also had the issue of images not loading in imessage and at least have a reason now
Sure helps the kids that can't seem to grasp how much information is at their finger tips and need somebody to spend an hour researching it and posting a video.
@@ShainAndrews I'm pretty sure the average user (the kind of user who would be watching this channel), wouldn't even know what HEIC was until they finished the video. How are you meant to search for something you don't even know exists?
Theres a photo settings in the settings app that says “transfer to mac or pc” and it lets you decide to transfer as is or convert it to a compatible format when transferring.
@@SoundOfYourDestiny I dunno, man. Storing your files yourself is better when it comes to cost efficiency, but if you want 100% certainty that the pictures of your life will still be here decades from now no matter the technological or mechanical failures, the cloud has got you completely covered. you can only save your own things yourself for so long before something goes wrong.
Exactly. Another example of Apple being detached from how real people work in the real world. Apple has, for its entire history, been a failure in the business environment. They're kind of like doctors, who work in their own bubble of retrograde technology where they don't use the tools that normal people use to actually get shit done.
The iPhone should have an option to export as a .JPEG so you do not have to deal with unsupported file tiles. Then you can download it as a .HEIC again.
This is so annoying. I had to take a few pictures for Art class last month. My PC laptop running Windows 11 can't open these files. Luckily, half of my classmates have Macs, so I Airdropped, the photos from my phone to my friends MacBook Air (Mid 2017), converted the files into JPEG, and airdropped it back. Then I uploaded it into Google Drive (which can view HEIC files) and downloaded the new JPEG pictures to my computer. Yes, I know that you can switch to JPEG photos in the iPhone camera settings, but I didn't think I'd have to do that.
Apple likes to default to some bullshit and then make everyone else run around and fix their mess. Like the pictures iPhones encode upside-down or rotated. The phone has an orientation sensor in it, so it could simply write the pixels in the correct order. But no... Apple encodes the picture upside-down or sideways and then sets a metadata flag that every other application and browser on the planet is supposed to read and then rotate the picture EVERY FUCKING TIME IT'S DISPLAYED, instead of Apple simply writing it out right-side-up ONCE.
also can you explain why if I look at the size of an image taken as a live photo and one that's not, they're identical file size in the photos app? surely that can't be right as the live photo contains video with sound?
Could you please explain how can you get rid of “Other” in iPad storage. It takes around 10 GB of my 32 and doesn’t go away, so I can’t download Genshin Impact
My sister had this problem and we discovered that it's because all of the Siri voice profiles were being automatically downloaded when going into Siri settings, and with each one being about 500 MB each, they were taking up about half of her phone's space. Unfortunately you can't get rid of them unless you factory reset the phone, even Apple support wasn't able to help us
@@theredlinev2 I hate when people dislike a game/person just because the fanbase is bad, like Fortnite, League of Legends, and Dream. They're all mostly fine themselves, their fanbases give them a bad rap
Pixel peeping at them comparing HEIC and JPEG, I still noticed a little bit less quality in those HEIC, and actually with having at least a 256Gb phone space storage, HEIC is quite not that useful for now.
Great explanation! I always have to use Preview on Mac to to export the photo from HEIC to JPG which is very time consuming. There's gotta be a better way
@@jules7926 Create a "program" with automation (or automator or something). When you have the HEIC on your mac you can right click and select this "program" to automatically change all heic to jpeg (and delete heic if you want that).
I bet it would have a really detailed explanation trying to defend the shit scam that consumers get through when buying a series 3 in 2022 lol. This channel has some nice explanations for real questions, but other times it just feels like he´s trying to defend the mistakes a trillion dollar company does lol
Greg, love the videos. Keep up he great work. But man oh man. That music you use as background music is horrible. It’s depressing. Not to take away from your video, which is awesome.
Good video - HOWEVER - if image quality is important to you every side by side comparison of HEIC vs JPG I've seen on here clearly shows a loss of quality when using the smaller and more effecient HEIC, as might be expected, despite Apple and others promoting it as the superior format. If space is your priority, absolutely, you're better of with HEIC. If quality is paramount, you are clearly better off with JPG, despite all the supposed advantages, as visibly, in real life - these simply don't stack up.
my Win10 does not recognize it , need a plugin that I have to buy from a store, I preferer to use a JPEG ( my android phone camera have 2 this optional formats as well).
HEIC format is kinda annoying to me on discord. cause if I click HEIC file on discord, discord suddenly tell me to download the file and open it on another app😕
Regardless of my photo, camera, and sharing settings, when I now send images via iMessage or text, my 13pro sends them as HEIF and I am receiving them as HEIF even from those who send jpg. This is new. Any solution? Airdrop delivers them as jpgs.
Because HDR was on while those pictures are made. Means High Dynamic Range, I don't know if the phone decides wether to use it or not per photo or if it needs to be selected manually as I don't own an iPhone. Pretty sure it just means the picture has a larger colour space, so the colours in the picture are effectively richer.
Hello. You forgot to mention that HEIF becoming more and more popular and supported. It was an issue once. Today I don't think it's an issue unless you are running dinosaur versions.
Never had issues ever . And my iCloud storage has nothing to do with my phone storage. Personally every time you buy a new iPhone you should get to extend your iCloud storage by 5 since if a new phone you paid for
Guys do you know if liking before finishing the video hurts the video analytics because I know that I’ll like every video of this channel so İ like beforehand
Most Android devices not supporting it is actually incorrect, I have a Samsung S8 released right after the iphone 7 and it has an option in the camera app to take photos in heic format, so even older Android phones support it.
I have a lot of problems with the photos being transferred very iMessage if done via satellite. I work at sea so a lot of images won’t download in iMessage. What’s app it fine
HEIC/HEIF is the image format that nobody needed. It is soiled in the same messy patent pool as its video equivalent HEVC. Use JPEG-XL (.jxl), AVIF or WebP and nothing else for delivery/web. JPEG is also dead and only kept alive by 20-30 years old editing programs that no developers bother to update anymore.
This is not quite correct. HEIC actually has nothing to do with compression directly, it's just a file format, (HEIF, based on .mp4 container format) which allows to store image data compressed with HEVC codec (and this is where the actual compression comes from). You can even put JPEG compressed image into HEIF file btw. And one very important point is not mentioned at all in this video. HEIC allows you to do very many different things which other formats are not capable of. e.g. lossless cropping and transformations, Live Photos (similar to GIF but much better performance) etc. etc. So it's not only about compression.
