On the other hand are people who hate IQ tests simply because they failed to get more than mediocre and just refuse to believe they are not special when that is what they have always believed. Pretty sure most IQ tests will at least ID the really dense ones ...but then they had to know going in. And they FOR SURE knew it as they took the damn test going "Huh?" tomostproblems ....And the real geniuses? Hell they already knew too just because they are blown away every day of their life how dumb so many people obviously are...you really don't need a test and a score ...LIFE makes it abundantly clear where we stand...it's not like a mystery

Dougie Quick iq only tests the pattern recognition and ability to learn faster/ other things. It doesn’t test memories and skills from idk, maths English science history etc. it only tests how fast you can see patterns and learn faster. Your IQ basically tells you how good you are at taking IQ-tests. Even the professional ones are flawed because you can train for them. (yes you can train for them.)
@cate01a
@cate01a 3 года назад
So true! With the ones I've seen, it's (from what I remember) various pictures of shapes and shades that seemingly follow a common pattern, though it's not intuitive. Of course, someone that can find these patterns fast is smart, but only smart in that particular area. And the issue is that you can learn how to solve the questions (as in what to look out for) which kind of means the test is rubbish because You're looking out for a statement (such as some obscure rubbish like, "The answer is the image where the number of black shapes is the same number of shapes on the bottom left hand corner of the image).

Well sorry the IQ test is a grate predictor for general inteligence. It measures intelligence and predicts how much money you'll earn, your academic future or past and how complex your neurons are interconnected. There is not a single psychometric metric that's better established in the scientific community. Other intelligences like "social inteligence" correlate strongly with general inteligence which indicates that there one thing. There might be a difference but those tests haven't been shown to make noticeably different predictions in comparison to IQ tests. That video is grossly misleading because it uses the bell curve to poison the well. That book is definitely problematic and it dosen't fulfill scientific standards. But that didn't make the concept of Generral inteligence wrong. G is a grate predictor and a valid concept, and IQ tests are the best way to measure g. You can train for certain tasks but you only get good at that task. you're screwed if you get a different one and there are thousands of tests to measure people in the respective categories.

@foundationsmedicalinformat2420
This point couldn't be more true. Each person who you meet should be judged on their merit, not their outward appearance. HOWEVER.... When looking at larger sociological and political issues, the fact that some populations may have higher IQ's than other becomes much more relevant. Undoubtedly, a push for educational or socioeconomic equality will be undermined if there are IQ disparities underpinning currently observed stratification between groups. This is not something which I personally find any pleasure in considering or something which I have any solutions to fix, but if it exists, it must be taken into account.

it's an entirely different measurement that deviates from actual intelligence itself. for the foremost iq tests i believe are pseduo. it only measures how robust your hippocampus is which is used to interpret patterns, what iq tests mainly measure. and many of the questions don't make logical sense which is quite ironic, so you can't measure logic by forcing me to find the missing piece of your illogical sequence. taking an iq test and believing it is a measurement of your intelligence, it's just so wrong. Some are more gifted in other areas that require logic. Intelligence in all quotients I believe are your ability to understand things externally and internally whether its logic, emotions or culture of whatevs. an iq test is just as dumb as only doing math for your SAT's whilst learning other subjects in school. It's hocus pocus. I got 88 as my IQ score and you know im really pissed. because not only is that below average and considered (inferior), my eq is also low i assume and i'm on the autism spectrum which is so freaken sad. i suffer from imposter syndrome so that mkaes it ten times worse. but anything stupider than my brain would be an iq test and they call me the stupid one.

Some things that this video did not talk about. IQ tests are supposed to be scaled based on the _age_ of the one taking them, this is how IQ is supposed to stay more or less constant throughout one's life. (for reference, IQ is calculated by taking your Mental age and dividing it by you Physical age and then multiplying that by 100. So if you are 15 but the test shows you were correctly answering questions that people at age 20 tended to answer correctly then you would have an IQ of 133. 100 is the "average" because if your Physical and Mental age are 1 to 1, then the equation would spit out 100). If you are just taking some random test online that claims to measure IQ, then you're not taking a real IQ test and it will not measure accurately. This is much easier to calculate in children to adolescence and even young adulthood because we know a lot about what functions the brain is still learning, and can create IQ tests towards those age groups to see what they have grasped and what the tasks the brain is still developing. So why take an IQ test? Originally and professionally it is used for helping to diagnose medical disorders, more specifically some mental and brain disorders. Obviously, this _could_ help diagnose a disease earlier on, potentially helping to find treatment earlier rather than later. But obviously, IQ tests are *NOT* the only thing that weighs that decision. If you are taking an IQ test outside of a medical environment then you're taking an IQ test for the wrong reason. It is also important to have only taken an IQ test in a medical environment because the doctors prescribing these tests _know_ how to target a test toward an age-group. While there _is_ still debate on the effectiveness of these tests, they have and are used to help diagnose disorders and have helped do so.

It took me a long time to understand why people were so obsessed with IQ because upon looking into this idea at a very young age I couldn't figure it out - I knew how these tests worked, I knew about IQs and EQs and all these tests people took to determine a number for their worth and only after once again investing some time in understanding the method later in my life I finally came to the same conclusion I always come to if something doesn't add up logically - people are incredibly uneducated about many things in live and buy into the most outrages lies all the time, to misunderstand tests like these is childplay with all of the scientific fetishism of these numbers going arround. If I had never done my research, I wouldn't know anything about these tests in particular. I workout to an obsessive degree and was very insecure about myself for quite a while growing uo as many people are so naturally, I was very curious about this kind of "objective measurement" of something so comparable until I started to question it. If these tests feel like logic puzzles, look like logic puzzles and work like logic puzzles - then what makes them so special? I scored well with multiple of them without any kind of training but as I figured that all of these tests had repeating patterns that are incredibly similar to a degree where a basic mathematical education could probably double your score in many of these sections, it started to feel more and more like a compeltley overhyped idea that had long lost its original meaning and I can't help but feel a little bit proud about my 14 year old me because even back than the whole deal seemed off. I hope more people come to the same conclusion I did because as long as people will try to rate themselves like that without actually understanding what they are doing, misconceptions about these kinds of things will unfortunately prevail with a widespread second rate media attention giving a spotlight to what ultimatley ends up being a test that measures your ability to take a test. If you go through any comment section about this topic, you will l realise that they are really a medical tool, not a "job interview measurement".

My hot take: The reason IQ scores actually don't matter that much, and the reason why actually intelligent people don't usually preface their contributions to humanity by claiming to be super sMaRt, is because social intelligence is also a part of.. well.. intelligence. A social species is what we are, and we also do reason rationally about our surroundings. Can we all just agree that, at the very least, being a smart, wise and good person has little to to with analytical skills? The problem I have with IQ assessments is that when discussed, the fact human beings are subjects, not objects, is completely forgotten. The tests don’t take into account factors such as confidence, self-belief, and stress-resistance. They also don’t factor in whether a person takes the assessment seriously, nor whether the person has been informed of the implications should they score high, or low. All of the above can play into how a person performs during an IQ assessment. A hyper-anxious person may go into fight-flight mode under the pressure of being assessed. That would negatively affect their ability to concentrate, alongside short-term working memory. Which could show as below average ‘Digit Span’ and attention skill. Someone who suffers from severe self-doubt may second guess all their answers. They may not complete all the questions and assessments in time. The self-doubt could show up as below average ‘Processing Speed’ by the standards of the IQ measures. In reality, the person’s processing speed may be average or above average. That’s because IQ tests don’t take into account subjective, internal states. They assume cognitive performance is independent of inner emotional state. To any rational person, that idea is completely implausible and beyond incredulous. It’s often cited that IQ correlates very closely with life success. How about this: life success correlates with confidence, self-belief, and stress-resistance. Features of personality that have a profound impact on how someone performs during a timed test, such as an IQ assessment. On a personal level, I have noticed that people who report a high IQ commonly have confident, stress-resistant, and blunt, matter of fact personality profiles.

It matters not why some people score lower on IQ tests. They just do and that's all that really matters. You wouldn't say "well he lost the race because he didn't get a good night's sleep, or because his shoes were too tight". Doesn't matter. He lost.

@shadowmaydawn What you say is applicable on an individual basis, but IQ test scores indicate that there are differences in average IQ between all groups. Diferences between men and women, different ethnic groups, and different ancestral groups, to name a few. You would have to demonstrate how one group could statistically be more likely to not take the test seriously when compared to some other higher scoring group. Intelligence is a real thing, and we all exhibit it to some degree or another, as demonstrated by cognative tests. Life it's self is an IQ test. All you have to do is observe people in their natural state to pick out the more intelligent ones. Is someone shopping for shoes with ice cream in their cart? Could indicate a low scoring individual.

I am currently majoring psychology; The IQ tests that are applied fail to assert and assess important facets of intelligence (creativity, problem solving, emotional intelligence, multitasking, corporal intelligence, self control...). They only briefily test logic, processing velocity and verbal intelligence, all of which are biased in their own way (the logic tests are LARGELY visual, so, to a blind person, they become impossible). BTW I am reffering to the gold standard tests, such as WISC, WAIS, Columbia... I am obviously doing a rough summarization of the issue, but people must know that these tests serve NO purpose aside from helping form a psychological diagnosis (maybe on learning issues at school). Intelligence is a complex concept that has little consensus among scientints of the field, so it should not be testable until that is reached.

The only real argument you made in this video was a moral one against categorization of intelligence, then you made a hyperbolic scenario about some kind of dystopian future, when in reality IQ test are still somewhat useful for example they were invented by and are still used by the military to test someones potential you see the military didn't want to waste resources on training people who didn't have the mental capacity to learn certain skills so in that case it can be a useful system however your right in saying the race IQ debate is pointless when dealing with individuals, since the difference inside a group is often greater than the difference between two groups when it comes to humans.
@jadoei13

Exactly, I'm sure there will be differences between races, but it just doesn't matter. I don't think it is in any way justifiable to treat people differently because of their race, just seems like a really problematic moral stance to do anything but that. It also just isn't a future worth striving for given how problematic it is, that doesn't take away any of the differences that might exist though. However, if IQ is relevant then you can of course select based on IQ tests, whether that is in military or in a work environment. Want something more specific? Some facts on IQ tests and why they are not a good measurement of anything: *_It is important that the level of difficulty of the questions is attuned to the results. The average of the participants should always be at an IQ of about 100._* As long as this is not the case, the test is incorrectly "calibrated" and the result distribution is not deemed optimal. The result distribution must then be adjusted with fine-tuning the questions until the average participant reaches a value of 100. *So tests vary from region to region and from participant group to participant group, which makes comparing them nearly impossible.* Have a nice day!

Always assumed that IQ tests were not always an estimation of your intelligence but rather an prediction of how fast you’re able to learn and sometimes they can be very manipulative especially when you’re overwhelmed at the moment, that alone can decrease your score but it also depends on other issues in particular instances. When I was a young child they were doing several tests including the general IQ test but in only were momentary measurements and it eventually accumulated to a total of 67. But technically this is understandable since I was born prematurely and had a minor case of cerebral hemorrhage but it wasn’t severe but it did impact the way I process information. Initially I was going to special ed classes in primary school and they also concluded that I wasn’t able to excel academically also confessing that I will need to go to another special ed school once again (middle school) Didn’t agree with this at all, knew I had more abilities than just making small “assignments” and doing the same exercises over and over again and felt like I was misplaced deliberately. Thankfully I managed to go to a regular middle school but I still had to maintain contact with my pediatrician aside of annual visits but everything was going well so far, despite the fact that I needed to learn in a more effective way in comparison with my “normal” classmates but this didn’t affect my grades at all. Right now I’m pursuing another course as sales associate on a higher level and it’s still going promisingly well. Never did another test again but perhaps I didn’t succeed in it since it contained a lot of math and my comprehension in mad is terrible, surprisingly enough I adapt to languages more easily but perhaps I’ll attempt to the IQ test all over again just for my own clarity especially since it indicates that I’m “mentally retarded” but i’m not noticing any of the characteristics. I’m just saying it’s not always necessarily wrong but in some occasions it could be especially if you felt anxious, pressured or overwhelmed. My sincere apologies for my repetitive English in case I made any errors it’s not my first language.

@@Tricosis. He/she sort of didn't have to. The major scientific consensus is that out of the varying genetic makeup of the brain, only a few of those genes differentiate race, and to further clarify, none of those are able to influence intelligence greatly. Even if intelligence was inheritable, it would result in offspring inheriting the so-called "low IQ", because families grew in backgrounds of poverty and low social status lacking education and services that would improve outcomes. Many studies when it comes to psychology are supposed to point out racial bias since it plays as a key variable that helps make conclusions from tests. Historically, science in the 20th century had a very deep-rooted form of racism that heavily skewed information as propaganda, that stems back to centuries of prejudice. Mostly western nations (when it came to postcolonial theory), would create the standard of what the people would believe, and that sets of beliefs were mostly propagated against cultural minorities in the new world. It wasn't because they were white, it was just because they were in the position where they could hold an upper edge when it came to colonizing due to access to advanced warfare. Just to clarify, before you get the conception that western civilizations conquered because they were "inherently better", many anthropologists agree that technological progress is not a 100% sure indication of the potential of a civilization to develop. Many technological innovations we see didn't necessarily come from one place, they were a shared idea distributed through routes of trade such as the silk road and mediums such as seafaring and road transport. Sadly, africa's geography was not connected to the silk road and therefore was not able to have the same technological progress. But there's more (cliche, right?), even with africa's obviously rough geography where development and technological advancement were limited, they were able to make do with what they had. Contrary to popular belief, before colonization, they already did have advanced civilizations to the likes of the romans and egyptians. Africa is in the state it's in due to the negative effects of colonization, such as ethnic cleansing and genocide due to the forced redrawing of each state's borders (which resulted in ethnic tensions within tribes and kingdoms), the slave trade, genocides caused by western forces, wars, disease spread by colonizers, and the like.

IQ-tests are actually a pretty well researched and operationalized concept within psychological literature testing one's ability to learn, and that's what it's most used for. If I were to teach a person a task, any task, how long would it take for them to learn it? someone with an IQ of 80 does not learn the in's and out's of an engine as fast, if ever, as someone with an IQ of 120. Understanding it does however not decide how well you can perform the task. IQ does not determine your future, it's just part of it. in fact if you go through university with an average IQ, your willpower and commitment of so commendable that if I were looking for a driven candidate, I'd love to pick you. The ability to grasp new concepts differ per individual and usually paired with personality traits as well, testing this is not inhumane or unfair in my opinion. It gives an indication, not a guarantee. We always have to judge someone on the individual level, not based on a singular number. But that number is also part of the individual, why should we leave that out?

IQ mostly measures your abstract reasoning which doesn't encompass the entire intelligence spectrum......it doesn't encompass verbal/linguistic reasoning, musical, artistic, interpersonal/ intrapersonal, kinesthetic reasoning and emotional reasoning. Usually I like your videos, but you seem to be missing the point of IQ tests, and criticize other things which are related to them. IQ tests are meant to measure specific cognitive abilities of people. Not potential(although IQ is correlated with success). And IQ doesn't indicate big differences, so treating people completely differently based on a couple of points is absurd. And all people should get the same basic education(as it is beneficial for them and society). But putting extra resources into people with considerably higher IQ can actually be beneficial for society, and for them(same goes for GPA, doesn't it?). I for example, am in a class of people with an IQ of 135+(tested by a professional institute), and It's very beneficial for us. Additionally I am in a national science program for gifted kids, and regular folks couldn't have been able to survive in this and benefit from it. These programs are very needed for people with high IQ because we waste our time in school. Being able to learn things faster. But because the pacing is fast in these programs, it means that it's not suited for regular people. And in my country, the philosophy is to give people the education that fits them. so extra resources are spent on people with considerably high IQ AND considerably low IQ. Another story how he realizes that most professional hockey players are born in Jan Feb then March. More professions are born in Jan than the last 6 months of the year. Cuz of the few month they had on the others as a kid, gave them more of a chance at that sport. Thus they are given more support. As this snowballs, the players from December are no match against the players born on january. Thus are discouraged from the sport. Read this book, it will make you change your opinions on an IQ test. Or at least you will learn a heck alot.

Intelligence and wisdom are separate things, just saying because you video seem to mix the 2. Intelligence means somebody's ability to solve problems, the more intelligent you are, the more complex problems you are able to solve. Sure, there are multiple areas of intelligence, but IQ is meant to measure an overall intelligence relative to the average Joe and in my opinion it does that well enough if it is done by a trustful source, but, of course, it is never 100% accurate. The point you're missing is that your level on intelligence is NOT written in stone, especially if you are

I have a form of dyslexia. Because of that, I (Or atleast my Mom, I was like 10yo) wanted to get government support, I live in Germany, we get training paid in cases like dyslexia. The thing was, that you had to test for serious learning disabilitys, to determin if you get the funds. I had to take an official IQ test. I scored a 129. Later in Life I took a Mensa IQ Test and I was a Beta tester for an App designed by PHD students to get a real IQ test onto the smartphone. Both scored above 130. For all who dont know, IQ shows how fast you can learn new concepts, and to some degree it shows if you can learn harder more abstract concepts. You might think Im just here to boast, thats not the case. Im talking about this, because a high IQ didnt help me much in life. I have severe depression. I had to relearn how to learn at Uni, because in school everything was so easy that I didnt have to learn. But in Uni, I have to sit down to learn that stuff, and I never learned how to do that in my School life. I learned the hard way, that you dont need a high IQ, what you need is perseverance, which I just didnt have. I had a friend I always think about if this IQ topic comes up. I didnt know his IQ, but I guess it wasnt very high, he had serious trouble understanding even basic stuff. Irony and Sarcasm went right over his head. But what he needed is time. He took longer to understand stuff, but he had no problem at all to sit down and take that time. He got his Bachelors degree, not by being Inteligent, but just by being able to sit down and learn. I get bored by stuff realy quick (ADD), and did you try to learn something when you get instantly bored? Its just impossible. And my memory is just plain bad. I have friends who can remember everything they learned in school. I can only vaguely remember what I learned 6 Month ago. Like Math, I am realy realy good at learning Math, but after 6 month I wont be able to do what I learned and I have to relearn it. I will remember that I learned it once, but I just cant use it anymore. So a high IQ is not important if you dont do anything with that, and it doesnt mean that you are supperior to anyone. Also what I learned is, to never talk about your oh so high IQ (which is ironic because I wrote all this). I got asked a few times in school if I know my IQ. Everytime I told them, the people who asked started to make fun of me. Even good friends, who didnt ask with any ill intend. What most people dont know about IQ tests is, that your age plays a role. If you have a high IQ as a kid, this can change over time, and when you reach adulthood, you might have a normal IQ. Early IQ doesnt mean much if you dont train to maintain that IQ.

To me, IQ tests are simply a way to measure some form of intelligence. Just like a strong person might want to know how strong they are, a smart person might want to know how smart they are. And there are many different tests, so if you score high on one you might score lower on another. But a high IQ would still indicate that a person is smarter than average, in the ways the test evaluates the person at least. Just like you could consider someone who can bench press over a hundred kilograms, strong. Someone who scores high on an IQ test can be considered, smart. But let's say the strong guy always skips leg day. Is he weak because his legs are not as strong as his arms? Or is he a strong guy with weak legs? Or do you consider him strong, solely on their bench press results? Just as strong is a vague term, smart is also vague. And there are different kinds of smarts and strengths, which would mean that a strong person can still be bested by an objectively weaker person in some physical challenges and the same goes for smart people with mental challenges. A person with higher IQ is not always correct in their reasoning compared to a person of lower IQ. It's simply more likely, statistically speaking. Imo. You would probably bet on the big guy in a fight, if you have nothing else to go on, just as you would bet on the guy with higher IQ in a chess game or something similar. I guess IQ tests get a bad rep because many people who consider themselves, smart, might not score as high as they would like. Smart people are probably more prone to be arrogant when it comes to questioning their intelligence. I know I am guilty of this to an extent. People have managed to convince me that my intelligence is way above average throughout my life though, as many unrelated people have come to the same conclusion, just by working with me and listening to how a think about things. But I view myself as a sort of glass cannon, being really smart at some things, and probably even dumber than average at others. But I'm definitely smart enough to know when someone knows more than me about something, and listen to what they have to say about that particular subject. That's probably how I got to the point where I am today. But I have not done a real IQ test. Unless you consider online ones, accurate, which I don't. Just my two cents on the matter.

Hello Second Thought. Your video - as they invariably are - was entertaining and intriguing. I agree with your video's contentions that the very concept of numerically reducing a humans intellectual and cognitive capabilities is a problematic one. Likewise, there are many scientific professionals such as Stephen Jay Gould (paleontologist), Peter Schönemann (Psychologist), or Robert Sternberg (Psychologist) who have impugned I.Q. tests. Furthermore, as was stated in your video, the results from these test might lead to social stratification based on intelligence, alike Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. To conclude, I do hope that humanity can resist use dubious procedures like I.Q. tests to hierarchize itself. Let's not let I.Q. tests become the next Phrenology; a doctrine tenuously based on science that was used to vindicate racial and political views of the time.

Literally my high school Eleanor roosevelt high school had classes only for gifted students who applied to enter at their middle school and for example, In the hallway of classes when all the students were standing in lines the "gifted students" on one side of the hallway and the regular attenders on the other side. You could see that the gifted students were all of caucasian descent(one or two asians) and the regular attenders were all of hispanic and african american descent. The gifted students recieved the best classes and the regular attenders were stuck with the mediocre , and very limited educational topics.

I think that if students are in need of more knowledge, the best teachers should be available to provide them with the education they need and not look down on them then dismiss them completely worsening their complete outlook on education. If you have noticed mainly homogenous societies such as china or japan try their best to teach students. I dont hear much of them segregating students based on ethnic, IQ or socioeconomic differences... why? Because most of them consider themselves to have a similar identity. Im not saying discrimination does not occur but it definitely occurs less.
