Until about three decades ago, there was a belief in one African country that the evolution and development of the nation depended on keeping the races separate. For this reason, since 1948, different laws were passed to limit the freedoms and rights of the non-white population, for example, marriages between people of different races were prohibited. The areas where each race could live were delimited. The participation of black people in strikes was prohibited and the participation of black representatives in Parliament was banned. But after decades of protests and international pressure, the discriminatory laws began to be abolished in 1990. Nelson Mandela and other opposition leaders were released from prison. And so began the political transition to a democracy with a new constitution that established fundamental rights for all inhabitants regardless of race. Years later, South Africa would become the most industrialized country in Africa. It was touted as the economic jewel of the continent. It even hosted the 2010 World Cup and is part of the BRICS along with Brazil, Russia, India and China, a group of economies that enjoyed rapid economic growth and will supposedly dominate the world economy by 2050. However, in early 2023, the U.S. embassy in Pretoria, the capital of South Africa, advised Americans living in that country to have at least 72 hours of food, water, medicine and hygiene items in case of a possible total collapse of the South African power grid. So the question is: why is Africa's most developed country on the brink of collapse?
