Brilliant information. Rich, detailed and slightly over my head. A great balance. Good thing Gene’s there to provide feedback to make sure things are explained for us amateurs.

I bought the C298 because it has the M23's Eigentakt and the M66's power supply: 1) it's less $ 2) it has more features like adjustable knob gain, RCA loopout for 2 subwoofers, trigger output to my 2 subwoofers I want the clarity. I add richness via my Cardas Parsec RCA interconnect cables. I upgraded from a Parasound 2125v2 (already sounds really good). Apple Music

Here’s what you do Gene, you have everyone in the chat record their own audio on site, then you have them all send the files to one of your cronies to be mastered for the final published youtube cut. The stream still sucks, but anyone watching it after the fact which the majority of the audience into perpetuity will have beautiful audio quality. The content on this video was really hard to follow, lots of jargon went undefined, people tripped over their words, some didn’t have much to say, I’d say the whole thing is ripe for a do-over. But that’s just my... Negative feedback!! LoL I feel this topic is really juicy, and that it would be a good series in and of itself with various amp designers weighing in. You have invoked Nelson Pass, and Paul McGuff?in? Goven? So you kinda owe it to your own dedication of being unbiased, to have these guys on to explain their design and cable synergy conclusions. I’d also like to see D’agostino talking about feedback. Get everyone to come on and talk about it.

@@Audioholics If it's any consolation the major news networks like Bloomberg are having technical difficulties nearly every time they swap guests for a new segment. Even when it's good, their audio is coming in at phonecall quality.

I currently have a Marantz SR5010 and JBL Studio 590s + Sony 3way surrounds. What I want is a good Class D 5-7ch amp for under ~$1000 with at least 200w at 4ohm. Then a sub ~$400 receiver preamp that I can swap out when a new HDMI version releases and I upgrade my TV. Or just a $1000-1300 receiver I could deal with. I’m having a hard time finding receiver type preamps with HMDI that aren’t $1000+. It’s stupid when I can buy a midrange Marantz receiver with pre-outs and just use that for less $. And I love what Emotiva has with their AB amp cards where you can buy a 5ch and add 2 cards later for 7ch.

Suggestion for another video topic: When it comes to the traditional Complementary-BJT class AB designs, there is a need to include overcurrent protection in order to keep the output transistors within their Safe Operating Area (SOA). One of my greatest "pet peeves" in audio, is that many if not most approaches to the current-limiter design can and do cause significant distortion when driving reactive loads, but I've never seen anyone test for this, or discuss it. It seems the entire industry has been sweeping this issue under the rug and I doubt even a handful of audio enthusiasts are aware of this very important discriminator between amplifier designs.
@Audioholics
@Audioholics 4 года назад
You can see this in my rest results in many recievers. Here is an example: www.audioholics.com/av-receiver-reviews/yamaha-rx-a860
@marianneoelund2940
@marianneoelund2940 4 года назад
@@Audioholics I didn't find a test with reactive loads in the Yamaha review. The issue I was describing, cannot be seen with resistive loads. Yes, I noticed you mentioned current limiting many times, but that's at the voltage peaks running near max power - which is not the case I was talking about. Real speaker loads often exceed 50 deg. phase shift on current, above/below the bass resonant frequencies. With certain designs, that can lead to distortion at only *moderate* power levels, i.e. it's far more pertinent to typical music listening, than the peak current limit. But I don't know how many modern designs still have the issue; it may not occur with MOSFET outputs since that device type doesn't need protection from secondary breakdown. I know it is common with typical BJT output stages, so I'd like to see reactive-load test results for some contemporary designs, especially if they're BJT class AB.

@Audioholics can y'all please do a video on what to look for in a power conditioner/surge protector for a home theater and what you would need depending on the amplifier you have? Been trying to find a video on RU-vid for a while now about this.
@PoesAcoustics
@PoesAcoustics 4 года назад
We would actually argue that you don’t need one. Yup! I said it, you don’t usually need it. If it makes you feel better, you can look for some better surge suppressors like those from SurgeX, but generally MOV’s are built into amps. A basic power strip is fine as long as it has decent outlets.

In the early 80's I had a Kenwood Super Eleven receiver that had excellent specs , high speed low distortion etcetera , I got new Ohm Walsh 2 speakers and they did not sound nearly as good as they did at Tech HiFi so I blamed poor room acoustics. Years later I got a Carver MXR 130 receiver and then my speakers came to life ,better base and dynamics ,better clarity and imaging and most of all I heard so much detail and things that I never knew was on the record or CD that I could not wait to put another album on to hear what I was missing .Hans Beekhuyzen says of amplifiers of that era that they used a lot of feedback which causes time smearing that hides detail.
@aegisofhonor
@aegisofhonor 4 года назад
Kenwood (or Trio in Japan before their official merger) made some fantastic products in the late 70s and early 80s. They made a fantastic integrated amplifier called the KA-1000 as well as possibly one of the best power amplifiers on the market at the time the L-08M which tested right on par if not superior to the best Sony or Technics were making at the time at often a little less cost. The secret to both was the use of a separate power supply (though optional on the L-08M) that delivered clean power to the amplification modules giving them a very clean power delivery. You simply couldn't beat the performance for the price Trio/Kenwood was asking for them.

Im thinking of upgrading my Denon AVR930H to a Marantz SR7013 is there enough of a difference to warrent the upgrade? I have ELAC FL/FR and klipsch C/RL/RR/ceiling L/ceiling R. Going to use it for music and movies. Update: I wound up getting the Denon AVR-X4500H as i found it for 999.99 I couldn't let it pass by.

Hi Gene, I need a little help from someone expert like you. I have a speaker that shut off my amplifier channel. That is correct. It looks like a clipping but on average high volumes. I have changed cables, amplifier channels and even source for the speaker and still the problem follow the speaker. I have also tested with another speaker with the same specs and the problem disappears. It is obvious that the speaker is defective. Since I don't have assistance here for the speaker I wonder if you could help me out to find what part of the speaker is effective. It is a B&W HTM2D2. Thank you very much Best Alexandre

Audioholics Maybe live streams could be a premium tier access feature, and the final youtube cut could be a more polished edit. FloatPlane may be a streaming solution too? Maybe Twit? The static of stream yards is all in the front end, and I’ve noticed the youtube stream doesn’t pickup right as you guys start, I’ve lost the first two minutes of the last few videos you’ve streamed. Maybe you should just run the logo and the theme music for a few minutes for the lag to calm down. I’ve never heard the full length of that piece. Also, if you start a feed right on the hour in the afternoon/evening that’s often when power grids switch their voltages for people to cook dinner, so maybe that over distances of internet and timezones of internet repeaters causes telecom interference? It could be a traffic thing too, so maybe do it outside the window of congestion, and don’t worry about fewer initial viewers affecting the youtube listing algorithm. Tough choice between those two.

Too much time talking about degree of feedback, which is at most half of understanding the design challenge. One brief mention about output stage speed, which is the core of amplifier design. Would have preferred to hear much more about open-loop phase response and achievable slew rates, and how they have improved from the 1970's to today. That's the real enabler.
