The value of gold doesn’t really change very much over time. It’s the fiat currency that loses value, requiring more of it to buy the same amount of gold. In 1850 an ounce of gold went for about $19. Today it’s worth about $1300. In 1850 $1 was the same as $28.30 today. An ounce of gold will buy you roughly the same amount of goods that it always has.

The Dutch at one time had the great idea of basing their economy on something else people liked and that they could produce - tulips. I kid you not. Everyone one was growing tulips. Then somebody pointed out that it was a flower (a pretty one but nonetheless just that) that wasn't that hard to grow and could fall victim to nature. That led to a "crash" in the tulip market, as you can guess. And the guy wasn't too popular with a segment of the population.

You totally missed why people like gold, it's a hedge against inflation and has a million practical uses. I work with gold daily but it is all alloyed to some extent to make it wearable. White gold isn’t generally very white unless it has a higher nickel content which is not viable for many because of allergies. Therefore most white gold is rhodium plated. Platinum can be worn in a much higher percentage (at least 85) so it is denser and also heavier. The cool thing about platinum is it takes much longer to wear away it also dead sets. That means it doesn’t try to spring back when setting stones making it less likely you will damage them with pressure.
