Why is Hawaii a Part of the United States?
In 1959, the United States of America gained its 50th member. Hawaii, which had been a territory of the U.S. since 1898, earned its place as the final star on the Stars and Stripes; becoming the beloved vacation spot and island paradise we now know today. Hawaii’s image is associated with a beauty of culture and experiences, ranging from luaus to hula dancing to volcanoes and Pearl Harbor - but much of the territory’s original history and culture is now unknown to the American masses. And that has a lot to do with how the U.S. acquired Hawaii…

@Knowledgia
Should Hawaii be part of the United States?

I get that America is the bad guy here but..... The other option was an absolute monarchy. King's and Queen's do not care about people, only themselves.
@CliffSavage2021
Here for this. I was born in Cincinnati Ohio, joined the Marines at 17 and was stationed in Hawaii. Huge culture shock, and most people don't all know the information made in this video.
@MR_Marvelous_1
It always starts with "missionaries" and ends with euro-decendants owning everything. Even the native people.
@gjallar-hj8gr
Thanks for making a video on this topic which covers most of the historical facts without all of the emotional charge and romanticism other videos get wrapped up in. And double thanks for taking the time to get most of your pronunciations pretty good. It's appreciated.
@ichigokurosaki2725
Great video; not sure if you realize you have Honolulu, on the island of Kaui. It should be on the island of Oahu.

One can't help but feel a fair amount of sympathy for Queen Liliuokalani. She was bullied into losing her throne when she was just trying to undo some wrongs that had been done to her family and people.

The Panama Canal did not exist in 1874.

I have native Hawaiian cousins from the North Shore of Oahu. Whenever people see us together and I tell them we're cousins, it usually causes confusion because of how white I am and how dark skinned they are. My aunt married their dad so we're not blood related, however we treat each other as brothers. They tell me of certain neighborhoods where whites are looked down upon, and it's only gotten worse over the decades. Luckily since we are family I never run into any issues when I'm with them at parties or gatherings, but I really don't blame the natives for having that outlook. Especially after watching this and learning more about how Hawaii was taken from them.
@joeshar.
US: Hawaii cannot be given to locals for geopolitical reasons of pacific defence.
@michaelowino228
Good video.
@labankienthuc1779
How did you create the map in the video?

What's the music at the end?

i feel bad for native hawaiians
@theawesomeman9821
I just want to point out that if Hawaii had a referendum for or against independence today and only native Hawaiians were allowed to vote, 85% would vote to stay within the US.
@bergjung
In a perfect world then I think yes obviously it would have been preferable if it had continued to modernize as its own independent nation or if at the very least it had been left up to the indigenous Hawaiian population to decide their own fate. But I can also acknowledge that at this point that Hawaii is so integrated with the USA that it would be a nightmare to try to untangle it at this point wether it was acquired rightly or not. Things could be done however absolutely better to protect and recognize the indigenous population, and to safeguard the the overall Hawaiian population from priced/developed out of their own homes from the vacation industry and wealthy mainland American families simply wanting a vacation home.

Sad this video ignored the native people of Hawaii wanting Independence, or the US federal law that bans direct trading with Hawaii. Instead all imports must go past the islands to California and then go to Hawaii, making life extremely expensive on the island. This was done as a successful attempt to force natives out to the continent, forcing natives that stayed into de facto servitude, while giving the rich colonizer’s extreme power over the natives lives.
