This still happens in China to black tourists. Locals will walk up to them, take pictures, and pinch their skin without asking for permission first simply because they’re so astonished.
its not real: Asian Hispanics and Arabs HAVE black relatives; they have seen dark skin or is also dark themselves. HOLLYWOOD IS NOT AN ACCURATE HISTORY TEACHER. try books
yeah, it more curiosity than racism, a man who has curiosity of a new kind of people but either way doesnt see colour, he just saw that he fought well. (I dont know about the anime, and i dont quite remember the original story, for what i can see for some of these clips, thats what i got)
Nobunaga was a considering lord to Yasuke despite his notorious reputation. He listened Yasufe's home country and his culture in great interest. Nobunaga expressed that he want to visit to his home someday so he wants Yasufe as his guide.
@@erikthomsen4768 well, there were Zheng He/Mahmoud Shams, in Kenya back in 1414 who's almost reached the Mozambique Channel. but at least he brought back a giraffe to China's Ming Dynasty later on.
Well, I know you like to belive that this interaction happened. But he was used by Nobunaga as a psihological weapon as Japanese belived in spirits and omens, and the word spread thar he had a black giant in his army. Idealising the past is not the right way to view history.
I am Japanese, but when I was a child, black children from the US military base came to play in my neighbourhood. I lived in the countryside, so it was the first time I had seen actual black people. Therefore, I rudely asked the same question as Nobunaga. Eventually I understood and we started playing video games together.
To be honest dude, Is not really like you were being rude on purpose or anything. That was a new experience for you at a time when your perspective of the world was limited... If anything, I'd say that could be a bit of a fun memory of a time where you didn't know much :3
Remind me of Sasha from AOT asked about why the guy skin is so dark unlike the rest. And the guy cleverly answered how the god is bored of white skin that is why he created black skin.
Man served Nobunaga to his death, and was spared the same fate because the man who betrayed nobunaga thought of him as circus attraction pretty much. But Yasuke was loyal to the very end, left masterless he returned to the missionaries. History loses all accounts of him past Nobunagas time.
After delivering the head of nobunaga to his son as nobunaga last request I swore to protect him, but also failed when mitsuhide attacked him. (It's even mentioned in this series, I just can't remember nobunaga's son name) Twice he swore to protect his lords, twice he failed. Pretty tragic.
Yeah we can tell if someone is being genuinely curious. I was a Nanny for a half Chinese, half Italian girl. She was six, and it was my job to improve her young siblings English as well as watch them. The fifth day in she suddenly asked "did you never wear sunscreen? Is that why your skin is so dark?" I just laugh and told her that God made me with built in sunscreen. She accepted that answer and never mentioned it again. Then one day some of the yard workers where black and we were playing outside and she runs up to them saying that there skin was like mine. And she was excited to meet more sun screen people 😂.
I had a similar thing happen with my brother's best friend, but he just explained to me that the dude's skin is darker than mine, and I was like "Oh ok I guess that makes sense"
@@XmrcaptainbobXWhat probably OP meant was that Japanese people during feudal times never have seen people with darker skin thus didn’t know they in fact existed. I mean Japan is an island empire with 99% of the people being fair-skinned and black-haired…

still find it weird how they turned this relatively obscure historical figure who literally was just a weapons bearer/exotic pet of a warlord into a magical mecha pilot samurai
Yeah I dropped this show when it came down to too much magic and sci fi shenanigans. I figured it would be an anime retelling of historical events with a lil flair (similar to Vinland Saga) but.....The opening battle was just ridicilous
It's perfectly normal to be astonished by someone's skin color if you have never seen someone with a different one before, I remember there is a famous video of a black person running because he saw an albino for the first time, they thought he was a zombie and his skin decomposed
Lol the entire story came from one dude who was born in the 21st century and there's no record or evidence backing his existence in feudal Japan. There's no yasuke. All the supposed "evidence" is all made up and this myth is already confirmed by Japan to be false. There is a story about a retainer to nobunaga who is black, but that's about it. A story.
He also appears in Nioh 2, I believe. Albeit his appearance is rather brief as he is seen towards the end of the Nobunaga part of the story. If I remember correctly though, he is an ally who fights alongside you in a side mission. When I found out he was a real person, I was surprised and intrigued as history classes (at least here in Florida) didn't even mention Yasuke
You're in the States, mate. Japan's times to shine in high school history classes mainly consist of: - Industrializiation in the 19th century after the USS Perry effectively ended Japan's self-isolation. Japan would become an economic powerhouse, Imperial power, and best Russia in a war. It was one of only two Asian countries to not be conquered during the Age of Empire (the other being Siam, which is now called Thailand). - World War II, during which Japan committed brutal atrocities, allied with the Axis powers, and eventually got bested. Lost its empire, was reduced to its core islands, and then got rebuilt into a major technological /economic power again. That's about it. Space is at a premium in history texts, and that's what gets wriggled in there. The writers aren't going to waste a half-page describing a warlord's man-servant, whose greatest accomplishment outside of bearing said warlord's weapons was doing so while black. Heck, my high school textbook only dedicated two pages to the entirety of Japan's activities from 1853 to 1905.
It all good I am from California, my brother and I where doing some random research when we discover him, is I remember correctly they give him a custom blades, I can't remember what they are called, but I remember the blades is supposed to so heavy that it take two people to carry it, and it was said he would duel wield them one hand each🎉. They are nice looking blades, I can't what they are call right now sorry 😢
And in Nioh 1 too! He worked with kellam to revive nobunaba, his lord, and is one of the endgame bosses. He fights with an Atlas bear spirit, which is one of the few guardian spirits that isn’t Japanese. He also teams up with Nobunaga and No (the ice lady) if you try to do this one late game (not dlc) rematch mission while doing coop
Seems accurate. Many people of Japan had never seen a dark-skinned person before. And remember, it was a very isolated country for centuries. And true to history, Nobunaga took a liking to this man. The more that Yasuke told his lord about his land & culture, the more fascinated he became.
I know right, history often portrays first encounters between cultures as bloody genocides (for the most part they were) but here you have a man that has no hate for a complete stranger just fascination over a culture he never heard of. Eusebio didn't seem offended by his given name, he just shrugged it off and was like ''huh, they can't pronounce my name, this shorter name seems alright for the time being''
Americans: "THIS IS RACIST" Most of the world when they question skin color, it's not from aggression. It's curiousity. Same with when I travelled back to my hometown in the countryside with my friend and she was of darker skin colour, they would stare and say random shit (I understood them) "Oh is that her skin? So dark, is it a tattoo?" It's amazing that some countryside towns still have not seen a black person. It's really funny hearing what they say. The only thing that was semi rude was "Can we even see her if she walks at night? Would be good at sneaking around"
I mean, it depends, doesn't it? There is always the difference whether or not the question comes from a place of genuine or willfull ignorance. I mean its fairly normal when a kid in a majority light-skinned community has questions like this, due to them not really being able to know better or in the case of Nobunaga, who realistically wouldn't have known about the existance of black people at this point, but then there is grown up people with access to modern films or the internet, where the question is, what did you do your entire life to be that unaware of different skin colors.
why do yall keep saying American? im not even american but saying random shit to a person with dark skin is weird asf. Let the people with Darkskin express how they feel, instead of you telling them how they should feel.
Yasuke seems to have been given a high status there, as books of the time describe him hanging around the mansions of great lords and no one paying him any mind. Since he was a vassal of Nobunaga at the time, I think he was allowed to enter the houses of feudal lords who were associated with Nobunaga.
This scene alone more interesting than the entire series they really did waste the anime potential, it would been better if the story is about some black guy becoming the first samurai instead some magical and sci-fi thing
Agh, I read "the first samurai" and then I think in boring U.S. politics. I have not watched that anime but I take it over the already tiresome "minority (in the U.S..) in race or gender is the best at everything but suffers prejudice from powerful but clear skinned people that therefore are the villains. It doesn't need even writers to tell the plot.
My abuelo was from a small town in New Mexico somewhat near Los Alamos. He told me that there was once a young black couple driving through town and all the children ran out to greet and talk to them because it was the first time in that town that any of them saw anyone with very dark skin. (They were used to either white or brown).
As an african, im not even mad, just amused. When Scottish traveller, Mungo Park arrived in Segou, Mali, the king's wives thought he must've been dipped in milk when he was a baby. And that his nose was so long cos he pinched it too often.
A white man who went to rural Africa cried because local children thought he was a ghost because of his white skin. The very young children seemed to know nothing about other races. I recently saw this RU-vid video.
@@佐藤田中-s3o rural Africa? Why not say the name of the country instead whole continent. That is like me saying Rural Asia or Rural Europe. Not all rural places are exactly the same as the video you saw of one region, one country in Africa. That's just generalizing. It depends honestly some african countries the rural people don't even know other people exist while some other countries the average person have maybe seen them two or three times in their lives since the introduction of the internet and television (even some rural areas people have smartphones nowdays although they are old models). In my countries case during colonization Italians had a decent interaction with the rural people and pre-colonization prior before that we were part of the spice trade so we had a good amount of interaction with many different groups from Asians (Arabs from the near east, Iranians (Persians), Indians, Chinese etc etc) and we used to also trade with the Greeks (there is even the Ezana stone which has our ancient language translated to Ancient greek and South Arabian language which is similar to the rosetta stone). Also you have to keep in mind that some parts of Africa have just been really isolated for a long time (prior colonization). Near the coasts in East (Horn) Africa, North Africa have had much more contact with the outside word (Including some West African places like Mali, Nigeria who have had arab influence and migration). Although these places aside many places in Africa simply were too disconnected for better or worse due to distance & due to the sahara desert acting as a difficult (though not impossible) barrier this exised (for worse meaning they were unintentionally blocked from many spreading inventions and for better in some cases like global diseases such as the black plague never really reaching them for examples due to them being unconnected through trade it didn't spread to them).
This could of been such a good anime, but than they literally side charactered him in his own fucking anime, and made it some weird mecha, fantasy shit out of nowhere. Afro samurai was one of the biggest cult classics ever, proving a anime featuring a black character can be sucesful, yet the creators of this anime just had no confidence at all in just making a story actually about Yasuke. Can't stop hating on this travisty joke of an anime

This is wholesome because those guys are geniuly curious about his skin being in a different color and have respect for that. They are not treating him like a "dumb" and stinky animal like the europeans do. For the racism story, i'm pretty sure it's because of the difference of culture and evolution. Because the europeans at this time made progress like electricity and other stuff while the africans are tribes living in the wild. The europeans was so proud of their progress that they consider the africans as animals despite they are also human beings. It's just a theory.
@@lochness5524 Oh. Sorry 😅 I probably mixed the time period between this one with Yasuka and the one where Lincoln gave liberty to slaves (by thinking of it, it's scary that african slavery lived for centuries).
What's important is that Europeans sold African slaves to the Japanese in those days, saying they were animals, not humans Ironically, the African escaped death because of his discriminatory perception In the past, there was a social perception in Japan that animals should not be killed together
fact: Actually we don't know what was Yasuke's real name, that info got lost in time, just like the way he ended. There are just theories about those 2 things
My grandmother, who passed away 13 years ago at the age of 91, said that why his skin is so burned when she watched a black guy in a TV show. My city is not so rural but not so large. So it's rare that a black person comes into the city even now.
This is as historical as it could be, though the order was apparently reversed. (He explained his skin was black THEN Nobunaga said 'you're kidding. Clean him. Wait, you weren't joking?")
There were no black people in Japanese history. There is one exception. A story that dates back 20 years to the time of the General. It is said that when a missionary took a black slave and met a prominent person in power at that time (Nobunaga), he saw the black person for the first time, and at first he could not believe the blackness of the black person and thought,' It must be painted with ink,' so he had the black person's body washed on the spot. It is said that, out of curiosity, he had the black man transferred to him, gave him the name' Yasuke,' gave him a territory, and made him a samurai. After that, he was involved in a rebellion by his subordinates and the person in power was killed, but when the captured Yasuke was asked how he was treated, the enemy warlord (Mitsuhide) said,' You don't have to kill him because he is not human,' and told the missionary to hand him over and return him to his home country.
My Husband is Afro/Japanese his father originates from Eswatini originally Swaziland. I visited South African who is also a veteran and i was amazed to hear his native language of Swazi. My Husband also speaks Japanese,Afrikaan(Dutch language in South Africa) and German. I’m proud of my husband and his life he’s given me a Daughter and Son and owns his own security company. When my husband visits Sapporo where his mother was born he is remembered as the respectful and mature little boy raised by strict parents who were not ridiculously strict but he understood the culture.
While Akechi Mitsuhide is respected in Japan, Yasuke is not particularly respected. How can a person be respected when documents are scarce, no surname is given, and his real name, date of birth, family structure, place of birth, ethnicity, and native language are unknown? If any Japanese says that Yasuke was respected by the Japanese, he is just flirting with Western political correctness. “The vassal asked Akechi what should be done with the black man, and he said, "A black slave is an animal (bestial) and knows nothing, nor is he Japanese, so do not kill him, and place him in the custody at the cathedral of Padre in India.” Luís Fróis November, 1582 Since Lord Akechi Mitsuhide is said to have been this way, he was no more and no less.
Also to the comments going "can't be mad about that" no shit bro. None of those guys had ever seen a black man in their life or even heard of one. They were probably just as confused about Europeans at first. Like I don't remember if it was Chris from abroad in Japan that talked about how in rural Japan some kids will get scared and hide when they see him thinking he's a demon because his skin is so light
Because the Lord would be unable to pronounce it, which could be an affront to his honour. Other Lords might mock him by claiming he was too uneducated, stupid or whatever to pronounce the name of someone ranked below him. The European man has to make sure The Lord won't be vexed by his interaction or else he might face consequences.
one thing to note africans arent the only dark skined people you got indian for india and native americans too i wonder if they would have said the same even some mongolians
God, The first episode was absolutely great, but I absolutely despise the rest of it since I would’ve liked an actual retelling of Yasuke (and yes, I am aware that the information about him is still very limited) would’ve been amazing to have a great story of tragedy.
in a different world black people wouldve been regarded as Legendary people who were blessed by the gods, hence their black skin and greater physical prowess

Then my japanese friends asked him "Why are your eyes blue?because you ate grass like grasshoppers?" OMG What rude children we were! It was late, but I apologize him now👃
They tried to make Yasuke look like a badass, but in reality he probably was scared shitless and the Japanese most definitely made fun of him instead of being at awe of his appearance.
I don't think you understand Japanese as well as you think, they are very much envious of Westerners, especially in the era of Nobunaga, it's other Asians they do not care for, especially Koreans given the history between the two nations.
