In this video Dan talks about Henrik Stenson's ability to take one side of the golf course out of play. Like many of Pete Cowan's players, Stenson has a very stable shoulder in the back swing, which allows him to never hit the ball left.

Hi Dan...I know that Henrik Stenson has a very firm stance by putting pressure down with his legs throughout the swing. However, since he/Pete Cowen are concerned with the right shoulder...what swings the club? Does he start the swing with his arms? Or, his legs? I can't quite make it out. I thank you in advance for you opinion.

Amazing how for every pro who does something with a part of their body, there's another pro who does the opposite. I saw Tom Kite on golf channel a few weeks back saying how he deliberately tries to get his right should as back around him as possible by retracting the upper back muscles. He's a small guy and probably needs to do that to get the most power out of his driver. He was demoing what he meant at the time with a driver so I'm not sure if he uses that same shoulder action with his irons.

Dan, brilliant stuff. I've been coming across the line forever. Never know if the next shot will be straight, nice draw, or big sweeping left. My right elbow used to fly, trying to keep it in, but seeing your videos let's me know I have a long way to go. Also a little muscley up top and have poor flexibility. Took a few practice swings keying on the right shoulder. That feels like a good key for me. Anyway, cheers. I subscribed and I'm sure I'll be poring through your collection tonight.

If you have trouble getting the right shoulder into that position (elbow straight down) what combination of exercises and stretches with the shoulders & lats would you recommend? Further, is it a function of keeping your left arm straight and into the correct position which if it bends you lose correct posture of your right shoulder/elbow? My miss is a push right, which I believe is not getting my right shoulder/elbow into the correct position to deliver the club correctly (in to out) leaving the face open. Thx.

Jordan Spieth may have won two majors, but his finishes in this years majors have been rather bad. Stenson won the open, came second in the olympics, did quite well in the PGA Champ. Really consistent golfer and I do think he will get more majors

In your Henrik Stenson swing analysis it's clear that he doesn't keep the elbow pointing down like you're saying..... it might not get way behind his body, but it definitely rises up and to the left (if you're looking at a down-the-line view).

I am feeling some pain in my right shoulder (could be rotator cuff), which is unusual, as most right-handed players who suffer shoulder pain would have it in the left shoulder (or so I've read). Is this pain potentially a sign that my shoulder is rotating too far on my backswing? Thanks Dan.

Damn, I can`t believe I missed this video when it was first posted, as usual MrB missed the Party! This is brilliant stuff (as ever) Dan, now I have more flexibility in my shoulders and rota-cuffs I am going to add this into my Back swing. Off to the practice range now to get it grooved in!

I have a narrow-ish chest, really long arms (2" longer than my height), and am very flexible in my upper body (all being relative). My right elbow gets way behind me. When I "just stop" it from doing that I feel I have no power. Looking for ideas on this. Perhaps I should feel the 'power source' somewhere else? Thanks

Great video and great subject matter. Here are my thoughts this morning and would appreciate some feedback from some people. In my opinion I should start the downswing with the arms and hips and shoulder uncoil at the same time, however the torso should probably be delayed so that the arms can travel from the inside out. The problem with my swing is I power the down swing with the arms and torso and shoulders all at the same time, when it should be hips, shoulders and arms start uncoiling together and then the belly button and chest uncoil after the arms are are certain to have a slight inside out path through the impact zone. We first build up speed with the hips, shoulders and arms, but with the torso in a closed position and then turn the torso last and at the same time the right side of the body will rotate around towards the target, and because the arms drop before the torso uncoils then the right elbow has a chance to straighten when in the impact zone. So then its speed, then torso and right side of body and right elbow unbenting for the solid rotational inertia part of the swing. I think the reason I was getting stuck when I have a large coil in my backswing is that I watched a lot of videos where the first move would be to shift towards the target and then uncoil. I now believe that during the first half of the weight shift towards the target that I can rotate my hips and shoulders and begin to swing the arms down its downswing plane, and then as the weight shift towards the target continues as we enter the impact zone with the clubhead, that at that point I uncoil the torso. For a long time I was stuck because I thought I should turn my torso then my hips then my arms and shoulders. I now realise the torso needs to be the last thing that uncoils so that I can create an inside to outside path for the clubhead entering the impact zone, and then my club grip and hands need to be travelling up and left of the target line right before impact so that the clubhead can travel fairly straight down the target line during impact. Would appreciate feedback. Another way of looking at my observation is that I need to delay my torso uncoiling as much as possible so that the torso is the last thing to uncoil so that my hands and clubhead can stay on their slightly inside to out path as it enters the impact zone so that my forearms can be in the process of rotating counterclockwise during impact at the same time that my torso uncoils and helps square up the clubface at impact with one half being from forearm rotation towards the target and the other half of the squaring up of the clubhead will be from the torso uncoiling later and of course the lead shoulder should also be rotating in the impact zone during impact so that the hands and the grip of the club is travelling up and left at impact. So I think I understand all of the moving parts, but getting the sequence down correct takes a lot of obervation of video and a lot of thought and understanding. Maybe someone can reply and let me know if they think I am making some progress with my sequences of my moving body parts in my swing understanding. And if I am not mistaken, my theory of making the torso the last dominant part of a swing, my understanding if correct should be able to be applied with Bowling, Tennis, and Ping Pong.

Hi Dan, do you think there is anything in the fact that Stenson's head follows the clubhead through impact? ie bit like Annika, with the head coming up through the hitting area, so many say keep your head down, would love your opinion, cheers

Great video Dan. Many thanks. Is the height of the right elbow specific to each individual, you mention Danny Willet has a low elbow but Henrick Stenson has a higher elbow? Is there a target height we should be aiming for at the end of the shoulder turn please?

Really interesting video. Didn't realise the pros sought a neutral ball flight so much, bit of a misconception around how much they shape each shot? The majority of amateurs obsess over a draw (myself included) so this is a really encouraging video to see. Will stick to keeping it neutral for now and try to learn to shape it on command.
