I started avoiding HA about 2 months ago and substituted it with Glycerine (Avene hydrating Serum) and it’s made a huge difference in how plump my skin is now. I’m 73 and my skin is finally where I want it to be.

But honestly it’s hard to find products without it and so long as I wet my face, I have so far good results with it. I absolutely overdid it with HA. I can't use it at all anymore, because products with it make my skin burn. I used to think niacinamide was doing it, but I can actually tolerate niacinamide quite well now that HA is out of my routine completely.

I love the initial effect with hyaluronic acid. But many products with hyaluronic acid end up leaving me with tiny bumps all over. When I eliminated hyaluronic acid it got better. Dr.Dray, This may help other older women. I am about to turn 72 and my arms were becoming an embarrassment to me. The skin looked crepey and shriveled when in certain positions. On a whim, I started taking hyaluronic acid orally ( 2 capsules a day @ 100mg). I am about to start my 3rd bottle so I have been ingesting these for 2 months. I have to say that there has been a dramatic improvement and I am so pleased. The benefits were not immediate, but sticking with them has paid off. After showering I had also applied a Korean brand of topical hyaluronic acid lotion, and I continue to do so, but before the pills, this was not giving the desired results. The capsules are also helping my facial skin but as I am not very crepey there, I haven’t noticed the big difference that I have with my arms. I am also taking the Heliocare that you recommended. Thank you.

I've been applying the CeraVe Moisturizing Cream in the tub that you often recommend every night before bed and it has done wonders for my super dry skin, especially my cheeks. I'm 47 and really noticing much more dryness and rough texture. The HA and ceramides in CeraVe help tremendously and it's super inexpensive. Only $10 for a 19oz tub. Goes to show that you don't have to buy expensive products to achieve great results.

Very true! I always find it a bit sad that many people are unfortunately tricked into thinking that a $100+ moisturizer, serum, or any other type of skincare product will yield much better results than a tried-and-true drugstore brand. I don’t necessarily blame people for being mislead, or simply being curious, because it’s often due to marketing tactics that influence the sky-high purchases. And some people really don’t mind shelling out a lot of money especially if they can afford to do so. What really helps is to familiarize yourself with ingredients that are proven to help the skin, and then compare those same ingredients to high-end products. Nine times out of ten they’re usually the exact same! You really don’t need to spend $300 on a hyaluronic acid moisturizer or serum. Just go to the drugstore.

My skin doesn’t tolerate HA. It would feel good for an hour or so, then my skin would dry out, even with an occlusive over it. Meanwhile, my skin would peel and turn red in creases where the HA sat. I figured out it was HA by comparing the ingredients of multiple products I had tried (I was only using one at a time cycling through different moisturizers as I used up each bottle), and HA was the one ingredient they all had in common. I haven’t had this issue since I started using products that don’t contain HA.

As a scientist, I am soooo.. over the myth that HA can dry out the skin. Thank you for stating that there is no proof of this. #1) If this were true, it would also be true of every other humectant! The mechanism of binding water in the epidermis is the same. Claiming that glycerin will not cause the same effect is ridiculous. Some people claim that it is the low moleculer weight HA that is to blame, but glycerin is more than 50X smaller than the lowest MW HA. Glycerin is a decent penetration enhancer for the same reason. #2) Where is the HA magically getting this water from? The only place it could draw water from once the water in the epidermis is depleted due to TEWL is the dermis. If this were happening, it would be a benefit! The dermis is comprised of 60% water and is always being replenished internally (unless we are suffering medical dehydration..if that is the case there are greater concerns than how our skin looks!). In fact 20-40% of all the water in our body is located in the dermis. Obviously humectants can only do so much. They cannot seal water in (none of them). They cannot prevent water from eventually evaporating (although they do slow the process down). If you have dry skin or live in a dry climate, you need emolliants/occlusives to seal the humectant bound water in. The possibility of irritation is a different issue. As you stated, there is currently no explanation. I think the fact that most companies are emplying the lower molecular weights or even hydrolysed HA in their products is cauing enhanced pentration of other actives. Future studies may show that very low molecular weight HA has a pro-infammatory effect. For now, every paper I have read shows enhanced hydration, improved healing, reduction of erythema, etc. with all molecular weights (varying with the actual MW and the %). I have read the 3D model study you spoke of towards the end of the video. It is a shame it has design flaws and is likely biased by the authors having a vested interest in the "novel crosslinked resilient HA". That said, HMW HA (assuming = %) provides a different sensoral experience & skin finish than ULMW HA. It is more viscous and stays on the upper layers of the epidermis providing a more visible "glow". Unfortunately companies are not very transparaent about the actual % of HA in their products and even less so about the MW composition.
@megancunningham9471
@megancunningham9471 2 года назад
It's not a myth, it's the lived experience of a whole lot of people. For people with dry and dehydrated skin, HA essentially facilitates trans-epidermal water loss, even with occlusives over top.
@marciamcdevitt964
@marciamcdevitt964 2 года назад
@@megancunningham9471 “lived experience” isn’t science, and plenty of other people have lived experience of the opposite effect. I live in Phoenix Arizona, have 39 year old dry and sensitive skin, and my skin LOVES hyaluronic acid. Been using it for years, and when I don’t for a few weeks, my skin is noticeably more taut and dry/itchy. Why and how? I don’t know. And I am not science either, I’m a datapoint of one. And I don’t pretend to be a doctor, or a scientist. But that is why anecdotal evidence isn’t science.

@debbiemccune1952
@debbiemccune1952 Год назад
@@megancunningham9471 It is not possible, thus although people have collectively decided HA is the culprit, it is not. It is 100% scientifically/physically/chemically impossible for HA to facilitate TEWL. You can check in with Lab Muffin Beauty Science on this topic as well. The placebo effect is a real thing and so is the opposite...the strong belief that a neagtive effect is attributed to something it is not. A molecule that binds water to the skin cannot in any way aid the skin losing water. It would be more productive to look at what else could be happening to find out why some people belive this falsehood.

I was just having a conversation last week with a content creator friend who has very sensitive skin to start. Her skin is fine with the hyaluronic acid in her skincare, but it’s the use of any additional products (such as foundation makeup) that contain HA which puts her skin over the edge. She then experiences burning & redness from those additional products. It’s very frustrating for her because she’s limited in makeup options already due to other sensitivities to fragrance & other known ingredients, but now with makeup companies adding HA to everything under the sun, it just makes things even more difficult for her. I highly suspect she is experiencing exactly what you mentioned about the HA enhancing penetration of other sensitizing ingredients in the makeup, as this would perhaps explain why she tolerates the HA in her skincare but not in makeup products. I’d guess that trying to parse out the actual culprit(s) would definitely be more of a challenge for her unless narrowing it down through patch testing. 🤔? Thanks for this extremely interesting video! 😊👍💕

you need to follow up with a moisturizer or trapper ( Vaseline etc ) or a nice Occlusive . HA draws out moisture from its surroundings so your skin will be exposed , you need to seal the moisture in to hydrate . Otherwise HA will dry out your skin since it’ll attract water from the air into the skin. Imagine you live in an area where the air is so dry , that won’t be good for the skin because there is not moisture in the air so I’d say either don’t use when it’s too dry your skin needs to be damp and or wet before you apply it

At the end of your video you explained about a product that has HA and SA in it. So. This is such a good point. My theory is when a product has a HA and an SA in it to me I feel the ingredients are saying "which one of us goes first for skin benefits". 🤣. I feel products with multiple "acids" in it are counterproductive and start butting heads. I feel the skin gets confused on which side to take due to multiple acids possibly fighting each other. This is probably WAY out there and more complicated than it is but it makes sense to me. So, my closing suggestions is this: 1). Can we talk about addressing "subconditions" being treated first. Aka, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis. 2.) Then address the other conditions like dry, dehydrated, oily, combination skin. So. How do you feel about treating "subconditions" first and then the other "conditions" as a possibly better way of certain acids working together instead of possibly against each other which might be happening. It's just my thoughts and theory. I'm no professional and definitely not a chemist. 🤣. It's just my thoughts about it. ❤️

I know in this video you did mentioned they work well together but not how they should be paired. I'm confused because another dermatologist says not to use cleansers with HA as it can cause the retinoids to penetrate deeper into the skin hence causing irritation. Yet someone else would recommend that it's best to use the Cerave Cream to Foam with HA before applying retinoids. Would be great to hear your take regarding this.. should we only use HA after retinoids (the next morning), or is it also ok to use it with a cleanser before applying retinoid, thank you.

After researching i confirmed the risks as well as no real support in findings for use in acne. I went to school to be a medical esthetician. Since then, I've found many discrepancies in the product knowledge we were taught. Also the school was shut down for unknown reasons to me. While there, I had mild acne on my chin. Naturally, I was used as the "acne case" for our clinical studies. I received facials every other day for two full years. They used a colloidal silver spray on me every time to "kill the bacteria", even though we used high frequency ( which we were trained to use for coagulation and to kill any bacteria on the skin, I found out we used it incorrectly/ ineffectively for killing bacteria). My skin got worse and worse and since then (10 years ago) I've struggled with adult acne. Deep, reoccurring, sometimes cystic and painful, scarring, and nearly impossible to extract, never seeming to extract the root. Thankfully I found your channel a few years ago and have been a subscriber after watching your first video. I am at a breaking point with my skin. I'm 36 with acne like a teenager. Do you think any of this could remain factors after all this time? The cerave moisturizer that I use only face along with the La Roche posey tolerance. I have found I am sensitive to niacinimide which is why I put it on top of la Roche posay toleraine cream. While it has never shown irritation, at first and still from time to time I get a tingly sensation upon application on it's own. But I believe it is not necessarily niacinimide but because my skin has become more sensitive since using retinol. Started with the Paula's choice .3% retinol & bakuchoil which felt a bit tingly up to 1 week & then fine. But then a year later I switched to 1% & a year later I still cannot use it more than 3 days in a row or everything I put on starts to irritate. Except for the cicaplast b5 balm. I also alternate with VitC (PsC). Before using these ingredients I never reacted to anything. But thankfully I haven't had any drying or any other visible signs of using retinol. I double moisturize am & pm. Am/ daytime I dont use actives. I only use cicaplast balm b5 of the cicaplast gel + cerave or another basic moisturizer/ cream from Paulas choice daytime along with sunscreen. I am wondering if the quality or formula of Hyaluronic plays a big role? I don't use fragrance, essential oils or drying alcohols or witch hazel on my face (skincare, primers, makeup, or sunscreen). I was considering throwing away the VICHY Hyaluronic under eyes serum & I bought the Paulas choice Hyaluronic booster. But haven't started because I was still concerned ... A Hyaluronic product/ brand review would be great Dr. DRAY?!? Always reliable & relatable quality content. Thank you, thank you, thank you Dr. DRAY !

I bought the ceravee fluid cream for my face that is quite new in Brazil and it ended up irritating my skin every time I apply and it was frustrating since almost everyone loves it.

Let it go. If something does not work, stop. My face and body hated Cerave cream , but I tolerate their lotions well.

I don't know much about Science behind skin care, but one time I got a phone call after I put on vichy 89 and before I apply moisturizer. After I hang up the phone, my face was itchy and very dry.
