Fr. Mike is honest about why it’s so hard for us to make friends. A necessity for friendship is time, something that many of us simply don’t have. More than that, true friendship requires a painful level of vulnerability and transparency. When asking yourself who you are willing to be friends with, you’re really asking “Who are you willing to give access to your wounds?” With that in mind, consider what Jesus said:
“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you” (John 15:15).
How much time do you spend with Jesus? Will I give him access to my wounds? This is afterall what it means to be a friend. Am I a friend of Jesus?

I used to have a few very close friends that I thought of as family. We drifted apart when I became a practicing Catholic. We tried to make it work but ultimately a great difference in values kills true friendships. I've had a hard time making friends ever since because most people my age (25) are very far away from God and my Faith has so deeply transformed my life that I can't relate to them anymore. It's very sad but it's a real problem. I think a lot of people in modern western society have a hard time forming friendships because there's no common culture anymore, no shared basis. Everyone has their own beliefs and ideas and it's all so disconnected and self-referential. Loneliness is a sign of a broken, lost culture.

I feel the same way. I'm 26 and Catholic. I go to a public University and I've even been looked at as a weirdo for being Catholic. All of my friends are agnostic or atheist. And I was broken up with because of my religion. I thank God for my parents but I fear the day when they will no longer be here and I'm all alone.

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always struggled finding friends. And when I’ve thought I’ve found them, they’d look out after themselves not caring wether they’d hurt me or not. So I’d add to the two reasons a third: People are only out for themselves and their best interest. Frankly, as a woman in my mid thirties, I’m over trying to make deep coney with others. My family is and always be my main priority. That’s all we have in the end. Because friends come and go. I apologize if I’m coming off as a Debbie-Downer to those who read this. It’s a realization that I e recently come to, and I accept it.

For me it's been the opposite. I happen to come from a very very toxic family. Physical fights were common and harsh insults/death wishes were cast upon each other. I had to find love from my friends.

Whoever God has already put in your life; ‘Relatives, neighbours, work colleagues, local people,’ you may be the only Gospel they ever witness. You may be their only signpost to Jesus. You may be the only good person in word/ deed/ attitude/ prayer, that they witness on this side of Eternity. One kind smile/ prayer/ word/ act, might be a moment of conversion for those around you. Your very presence brings Jesus to them.

I am 35. Im an unmarried, career successful female. I try to work hard. I certainly prefer to be admired than loved. I've helped so many people through my role I healthcare. And meanwhile, I've hidden away from people. I dont want them to see my rubbish side. This stemmed from a situation in my past. Also, I dont want to think negatively of people. Because my negative side is horrific to me. I say the rosary every day. Its helping me so much. I contemplate Jesus, Mary and Joseph and their individual struggles. Im getting there slowly.

For me, I live in a rural area where people are always busy with their families. They don't want to make time. It's very sad and lonely. I try my best by reaching out and usually go the distance to see others. I work part time outside the home, volunteer and go to Bible study. I always heard the the saying, "If you want a friend, be one." Well, I keep trying, but it's been a real challenge.

Throne and Altar it’s just hard to not have real life human interaction. Of course the saints listen to us anytime we need them and find ways to help us through other things/events/people or in any way they can. But there’s no direct physical contact and as social beings it sometimes feels like they’re so so far away and and it’s like talking to a wall.

I just don’t get anything out of this one.. I wish I did. I think maybe I’m honestly just so depressed today. I’ve tried being vulnerable. I try reaching out. I try to be a good listener and all that. I always get left behind. I’m convinced it doesn’t matter how much I care or try, I always end up without a friend. Idk sometimes I think God just meant for me to go it alone. (edit: I will say this, I am IMMENSELY thankful for the catholic speakers like Fr Mike who care about the church and try to reach out to us. I can’t even say how much of a positive impact things like this ministry do have on me. Overall I am definitely thankful for the sense of catholic community that I get from following these videos. It reminds me that although I feel alone, I’m not actually alone. There’s a whole body of believers that Christ is helping and shaping and calling closer to himself. So I am thankful for that. I am very thankful for that.)

Lucia DeLoach I totally get what you’re saying. A few years ago in college I tried making friend on several occasions and it was told to “make more friend”. It was also abundantly clear they were embarrassed to be around me. I didn’t have the trendiest clothes because I was broke but they were into fashion and all that. I also was shy so it took a lot to just start a conversation. So it was depressing when I wasn’t cool enough for them. And this was at a catholic college. 🤦‍♀️ Seriously, some people are just materialistic and stuck up. We don’t need those kinds of people in our life anyway. So it’s their loss if they can’t see your value.

A month ago I lost my best friend and my (now ex) boyfriend because they disagree with my Catholic beliefs, and felt the need to cut me out of their lives, so I agree 100%. I've found that people tend to be friends with others that share their same viewpoints as it validates them. When someone comes along and disagrees they take it as a personal attack.

@Matt Blaise Oh, I completely agree! They cut me out of their lives, not the other way around. I would never do that to someone. I just find it funny how the majority of the left is seen as the "tolerant" ones until you disagree and then they feel the need to cut ties with you instead of having an actual conversation. It blows my mind.

So true. I feel it's so hard to make good friends as you get older. People are also impatient to listen to problems or concerns with others bc life is so busy or stressful. I feel even in the Church this has become a problem. I am a Catholic/ Christian too. 💗😇❤️🙏

One can be vulnerable with their close family, neighbors, those who know more about you than others. Perhaps/ guess that’s why we’re told to maintain a good relationship and to be kind with family, neighbors, friends.

Hey people reading this. I am going to start RCIA this August when I get back to my home from my internship. My whole family (except one who married in as a Catholic) is Protestant. My brother goes to a hardcore Reformed seminary. I was involved all of college with a Reformed Christian ministry. My church was a Reformed Baptist Church. I have spent so many times saying the Catholic Church is a church in dire need of salvation. Until, I really did the research and realized Christ's church is in Rome. Church history, reading books (most importantly the Bible), and just listening without my fingers in my ears has helped me see the truth. I am seriously so nervous about telling everybody that I am going to become a Catholic. Prayers would be deeply appreciated. Ask the saints to intercede for me. Ask Christ to comfort me.

Prayers coming your way! I have a friend who had your same background who converted and there were hard times with her family but things are much improved! You might enjoy reading Rosalind Moss. She grew up Jewish and became a Protestant minister as an adult. Similar to your own story, she eventually became Catholic through study.

Even though this video is three years old, this is my first time watching it, and I can identify so much with this. I have been very ill since for the past 12 years with severe autoimmune disease and several other chronic issues I am very lonely, my only source of support a lot of time is that social media I don’t have a true best friend. I also have been hurt terribly by people I have CPTSD so it is very hard for me to be vulnerable and open up and let people in thank you for this and thank you for the prayer. I need to hear this.

I’m not sure if I have a problem with trusting other people and I need to learn to let my guard down a little, or if there just really isn’t anyone around me who I should trust. Thanks Fr. Mike! GOOD friends are hard to find! One that you can count on and trust! There are many who will be your friend but there are certain conditions and also no time. It seems also the internet and social media has ruined friendships and relationships, everything is so fake and everyone just looks at their cellphone like they can't live without it. Prejudices and discrimination also is a road block on finding a GOOD friend.

Many of your videos, Fr. Mike, refresh or more fully expand on concepts that I’ve known previously in some way. But this one floored me with a couple “oh, wow” moments in which I was completely surprised by a new truth. The idea that many of us would rather be admired than loved really hit me. I felt like it was a moment of fresh revelation. Similarly, the concept that some of us can be transparent but not vulnerable with people really stopped me in my tracks. Both ideas immediately resonated as true and shined some light into both my own life and that of other people I know. God bless everything you’re doing, Fr. Mike! Exactly what I needed" and I always like "yea right, sure, whatever" but this was literally the perfect timing in my life and exactly what I needed to hear because I'll be going to a new school. Fr. Mike, this is so good! I understood what you were saying really well. I returned from a 10-day mission trip six days ago during which I made a couple of "excellent" friends, as Katie P. McGrady recently spoke about. That trip was a special opportunity to really speed up what you said about time. I got so close to these people, and so fast, I was really surprised. I agree with what you said about being vulnerable, and opening yourself up to being loved, rather than just being admired. Thank you for your wisdom and kindness! I am praying for you.

I felt like this a couple of weeks ago . God turned it all upside down . I started praying for my neighbors. Very thankful for my life apt and praying for others . Father Mike, this is so valuable lesson for me, I let nobody see me vulnerable because of my past. This explanation of addressing your choice in friendship with christ really changed my perspective in a positive and forgiving way. Thank you, God bless Father.

Christianity does have so much to offer and while I think it has dark and exclusionary aspects that will probably prevent me from ever fully converting, you make me see that the positives do shine very bright. You've earned a subscriber :)
