"Free health care" is not accurate. Australian taxpayers pay towards the health system from their income taxes. For most medical services there is a government subsidy (Medicare rebate). The value of the rebate has declined to around half or less of the amount you have to pay out of your own pocket (gap payment). There is free hospital treatment if you don't have private health insurance. If you need an operation you have the option of waiting for a free operation in the public system, or paying a private surgeon/specialist for treatment. The charges in the private system are exorbitant since it's mostly the insurance companies that pay, although you will have a substantial gap payment as well. If you don't have private insurance generally there is a long wait of a year or more to be admitted under the public system. So it's not pure joy for Australians. However it's nice to know that if you get knocked over in the street and taken to hospital, you won't get frisked for a credit card before you're admitted.
