The purple lightsaber existed in books and games back in the 90s, George just wanted to keep things visually simple and a big battle is already chaotic. He doesn't hate the EU and will even reference it based on comics which he enjoyed reading (He wasn't too into novels because he likes visual storytelling). Mace Windu definitely helped influence the lore though since KOTOR assigned meaning to colors after AOTC.

purple was already in the comics, which George was an avid reader of, and decided he might as well. AOTC has the most references to Expanded Universe material including Aayla Secura (a comic character), curved lightsaber hilts (first appeared in Tales of the Jedi comics), dual wielding lightsabers (TOTJ again), deflecting lightning with a lightsaber (The Thrawn Trilogy), the cloning pods (Thrawn again, and the prequels took the name Coruscant from the comics as well. We've gotten to the point that people attribute these things to these clips as the genesis of new lore, when in reality the lore was already there, George just decided it was okay to use it when requested.

@@gabethebabe3337 George never considered the EU canon. He still used parts of it. Purple lightsabers weren't cannon until now. Otherwise there would be more lightsaber colors in the massive jedi fight scene.

Purple is red and blue. Made sense for him. Also gave credence to Revan.

Actually they did give a lore reason. Windu has a battle lust meaning he loved to fight. That is a predominantly Dark side thing so him having that constant battle with the dark side ended up manifesting in his kyber color being purple, blue with the light side and his combat abilities and red for the dark side mixing into the purple blade of mace windu

Anything that George Lucas puts his seal of approval on that says it's Canon actually exist in the starwars lore and universe. Mad a black dude got another distinction other than his skin color?
